William E. Tharp

William E. Tharp died Sept. 18, 2005, in Napa, Calif. He was 76 years old.
Born in Oklahoma on Aug. 7, 1929, Bill moved to Aspen after his service with the U.S. Army in Korea.
He met and married Heather P. Hamilton while in Aspen, where they raised two children.
The Tharps owned and operated the Aspen Copy Service, the Omni Service and The Answer Man business answering service before Bill became a managing partner in the Aspen Ice Garden in 1975.
In 1981 Bill moved to Queenstown, Md., while working for the Aspen Institute at the Wye Plantation.
Since 1988, Bill had lived in Napa, Calif., and worked at a series of wineries including Costello Vineyards, Trefethen, Carneros Creek and Robert Mondavi.
For the past several years he split his time between Napa and the island nation of Fiji.
Bill is survived by his former wife, Heather, of Silt, children Hamilton (Janet) of New Castle and Amanda Stephens of Glenwood Springs, grandchildren Cameron and Whitney Stephens, and step-grandchildren Brian and Brent Murphy.
A celebration of his life took place in Napa on Sept. 24.
A similar celebration in the Roaring Fork Valley is pending.
Carolyn Casebeer

Carolyn Casebeer, beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend, died Oct. 1, 2005, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
She was 91 years old.
Carolyn was born on March 14, 1914, in Royersford, Pa., to Everett and Naomi Yerk Lewin. She spent her early years in Royersford and graduated from Royersford High School.
In 1939, she moved with her brother and his friend Floyd "Casey" Casebeer to San Diego.
On Oct. 1, 1939, she married Casey. They lived in San Diego and two sons were born.
While Casey was in the Navy, they moved frequently, first to Honolulu then Astoria, Ore., and Napa, Calif.
When Casey retired from the Navy, they settled in El Cajon, Calif., and in 1967, they moved to a home they built south of Carbondale above the Crystal River.
In 1997, Carolyn moved into senior housing in Carbondale.
Carolyn was a member of Eastern Star, OWLS, and United Methodist Women.
She was a lifetime member of Unity and an active participant in the Carbondale Community United Methodist Church.
Carolyn was loved by all; she was a woman of great strength and strong faith, and she shared her faith with all who knew her.
She always had a positive attitude and inspired others. Carolyn knew the time to love another was when that person seemed most unloving.
Nature was a source of joy and peace to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Phyllis Marshall, brother Paul Lewin, grandson Josh Casebeer, and nephew Paul (Bill) Lewin.
Carolyn is survived by her sons Charles and Steve of Springfield, Ore.; granddaughter Janine of Springfield; two great-grandchildren, Kaycee Casebeer and Ethan Scott; two nieces, Sue Peters of El Cajon, Calif., and Lynn Pierskalla of Northglen; two nephews, Jim Lewin of Durango and Richard Marshall of Spring City, Pa.; and a host of friends.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Carbondale Community United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frederick W. Amborn III officiating. A reception was held at Carbondale Senior Housing, 1240 Hendrick Drive, Commons #4.
Donations may be made in Carolyn's memory to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Carbondale United Methodist Church or Unity Church.

A memorial service for Carolyn Casebeer (March 14, 1914, to Oct. 1, 2005) will take place at Carbondale Community United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. A reception will follow at Carbondale Senior Housing, 1240 Hendrick Drive, in Commons 4.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and Carbondale Methodist Church or Unity Church.
Russell Albert McKenzie

Russell Albert McKenzie died Oct. 3, 2005, in Mesquite, Nev. He was 60 years old.
Russell was born Feb. 10, 1945, in Brockton, Mass., to Murray and Ella McKenzie. He grew up in Randolph, Mass., and graduated from Randolph High School. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. From 1969 to 2001, Russell lived in the Aspen and Carbondale areas. In 2001, he moved to Mesquite.
Russell is survived by a son, Vance, of Las Vegas; brothers William (Nancy) of Woody Creek, Paul (Marie) of Randolph, and Walter (Thomasina) of Chelmsford, Mass; sisters Patricia (Paul) Callanan of Hampstead, N.H., and Arlene (Paul) McNulty of Belmont, Mass.; and a brother, Daniel (Judy) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 22 nieces and nephews; and 45 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Murray and Ella McKenzie.
He is also survived by all his friends of Mesquite Ace Hardware and Mesquite Elks Lodge 2811.
Their warmth and friendship made Russ' last year more comfortable. For this the family gives its heartfelt thanks.

Jerome T. Walsh

Jerome T. Walsh died Sept. 21, 2005. He was 75 years old.
Jerry was born and raised in Chicago. He attended St. Phillips High School and the University of Illinois.
He was a mechanical contractor and co-owner of Delta Piping and Hanley Mechanical Inc. in Chicago for more than 40 years.
He was past president of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Chicago and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
He loved to spend time outdoors and in the company of friends.
Without much provocation, Jerry was known to sing his favorite Irish songs.
In 1972, Jerry and his family purchased a home in Snowmass. By 1998, Jerry and his wife, Darlene, decided to make Basalt their permanent home.
Jerry was an employee of ACRA, working at the Aspen airport information center for the past couple of years.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; children Pat, Tracy, Colleen, Erin and Tim; sisters Catherine (Walsh) Pollard and Patricia (Walsh) Sobie; and six grandchildren.
There will be a memorial Mass in Jerry's honor at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Basalt at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry's name to the foundation at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
Jack Wood

Jack Wood died Oct. 8, 2005, at Aspen Valley Hospital. He was 68 years old.
Jack was born on May 12, 1937, in Joplin, Mo., to Paul E. and Pauleta Wood. He married Carolyn Tunnell on Aug. 25, 1956, in Dumas, Texas.
They had two children, Jack F. (Shirley) Wood Jr. and Pam (Randy) Wood Losey.
He is also survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Farnum-Holt Funeral Chapel, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs.
A reception will follow at 905 Lupine Circle in Basalt. The Rev. Tom Rittenhouse will officiate.
Gary Alan Burrows

Gary Alan Burrows died Oct. 6, 2005, at his home in Glenwood Springs. He was 53 years old.
Gary was born on Nov. 26, 1951, in San Angelo, Texas. He was the son of Vernon Ray and Lucille Burrows.
Gary owned and operated Highlander Plumbing and Heating, and Burrows Racing. He married Corine Townsley on Dec. 24, 1993, in Carbondale. He loved the outdoors, hunting, camping and fishing, but building hot rods were his favorite pastime. He also loved the solid-gold oldies and watching old Westerns.
Gary was a very loving man who was always there for his family, taking care of them until the day the Lord called him home. He will be sorely missed and was his family's hero and now, guardian angel. He always was comforting to his family and friends.
Gary is survived by his wife, Corine; his children, Becca Burrows, Rhianna (Paul) Heisig, Paul (Becky) Kurtz, Wendi Kurtz, Bobbi Jensen, Brandie Mayes, Kimberly Burrows, Tanya Burrows and Kelly Burrows; 11 grandchildren; sisters Helen (Cleat) Story and Linda (Richard) Freeman; nieces Tina (Barry) Madison, Sandy Story, Mandy Story and Gwendolyn DeMoore; nephews Jim (Kelly) Story and Christopher Roper; eight great-nieces and -nephews; and two great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Ray and Lucille Burrows.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Farnum-Holt Funeral Chapel, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs, with Pastor Rex Townsley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be sent to an education fund set up for Becca Burrows at Alpine Bank.
Alice B. Allred

Alice B. Allred, formerly of Grand Junction, died Friday, Oct. 14, at Pikes Peak Care Center in Colorado Springs. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Allred had been a Grand Junction resident for more than 50 years. She was born Alice B. Arbaney on April 27, 1915, in Basalt. Her parents were Laurent Arbaney Sr. and Mary Arbaney, one of many pioneering families of Basalt and the Aspen valley that emigrated from the Aosta Valley in northern Italy in the late 1800s. She graduated from Basalt Union High School in 1933.
Alice married Bert P. Allred on April 28, 1945, in San Francisco. After World War II they settled in Grand Junction, and co-founded B&B Electric. Before her marriage and during the war she was a telephone operator and trainer. During the 1970s, she was the admissions director at Grand Junction Osteopathic Hospital, which is now Community Hospital.
Survivors include two sons: Ronald D. Allred and his wife, Joyce Allred, of Telluride and Maui, Hawaii, and William D. Allred of Grand Junction; daughter Sandy Goad and her husband, Larry D. Goad, of Monument; a sister, Eva Gerbaz of Gerbazdale; sister-in-law "Toots" (Beulah) Arbaney of Basalt; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews including Pat (Arbaney) and Lonnie Mayhugh, and Dick and Judy Arbaney of Grand Junction; Judy (Arbaney) and Wyland Kittle, and Delores (Gerbaz) Stutsman of Basalt; Doug and Seika Gerbaz of Aiea, Hawaii; Jerry and Judy Gerbaz of Gerbazdale; and Kevin and Lois Arbaney of Parachute.
An infant daughter, husband Bert, one grandson, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
A graveside service will take place on at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Grand Junction. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Hospice of the Grand Valley, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506. Martin Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Paul Douglas Belden Jr.

Paul Douglas Belden Jr. of Aspen, our beloved son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew and friend, died Oct. 30, 2005, at Aspen Valley Hospital.
Paul ("Doug," "Dougie") was born March 22, 1967, in Elk Grove, Ill. He had lived in Aspen for 16 years. Upon graduation from the University of Illinois in 1989, Doug arrived in Aspen to work for the Aspen Skiing Co. He subsequently worked at Cooper Street Pier and for the last five years at Bentley's at the Wheeler.
Doug is survived by his father, Paul, of Carmel, Ind.; his mother, Carolin, of Lake Barrington, Ill.; his twin brother, David, of Lyons, Ill.; sisters Jackie (Walter) Hawthorne of East Lansing, Mich., and Kathleen and Megan of Carmel; a niece, Katherine; his grandmother Edith Belden of Mentor, Ohio; and many loving uncles, aunts and cousins. He also leaves behind many cherished friends and treasured memories.
Doug was generous of heart and kind of soul. A true friend, a friend to all: He loved football, was a voracious reader and loved music, particularly the blues and music from New Orleans. He will be deeply missed.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Doug's life at 4 p.m. today at The Red Onion.
