Samantha P. Carlson

Samantha P. Carlson of Glenwood Springs died Aug. 14, 2005, in Delta. She was 10 years old.
Samantha was born May 9, 1995, in Glenwood Springs to Rex E. and Lorry (Afonso) Carlson. She loved butterflies, art, reading, bike riding, music, swimming, fishing, her family and friends. She belonged to a local Girl Scout troop.
She is survived by her mother and father, brother William Carlson, sister Maria Carlson and many family members. She was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholas Carlson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at First United Methodist Church, 825 Cooper Ave., Glenwood Springs, with Pastor Dave Pearson officiating.
Anthony 'Red' DiSalvo

Anthony "Red" DiSalvo lost his battle with cancer and died peacefully at the Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale on Aug. 19. He was 79 years old.
Red was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 21, 1926, to Italian immigrants Joseph and Petrina DiSalvo; he got his nickname early in life for his thick, bushy red hair.
Red married a childhood friend, Pauline Mule, in 1956, and they remained married until his death. Together they had two children, Petrina and Joseph. Red worked for 40 years as a printer in New York and Connecticut. In 2001 he left the city he loved and moved to Glenwood Springs so he and Pauline could be closer to Petrina, Joseph and daughter-in-law Marcy.
Red enjoyed many things, but most of all he loved to spend time with his family. He was grateful to travel to Sicily last fall to visit the birthplace of his parents. He will be remembered as a tireless worker, loving husband and father, and incredible comedian.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Prince of Peace Chapel in Aspen. A reception will follow at Jimmy's.

Doris Kovner

Doris Kovner died peacefully at her home in Longmont on April 23. She was 88 years old.
Doris was born on July 26, 1916, in Newburgh, N.Y., to Ignatz and Henrietta Berger. She married Walter Kovner on Feb. 17, 1939, in Miami Beach, Fla. Doris attended Ethical Culture College, department of teacher education, and taught for two years at the Ethical Culture School, where Stephen Sondheim was one of her kindergarten students. She also owned and operated the Bagatelle Boutique in Miami and Miami Beach for 30 years.
Doris enjoyed playing the piano, was a patron of the arts and especially enjoyed chamber music and ballet. She also liked traveling, cooking, shopping and dining out. Doris and Walter spent summers at the Aspen Alps for nearly 30 years. In the early years, they participated in the Aspen Institute. They were patrons of the Aspen Music Festival and School, and set up an endowment to help aspiring music students.
Doris was extremely dedicated to her family and moved to Boulder County in June 2003 to be near her daughter and grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Jeffrey Kovner. She is survived by daughter Carol Lena Kovner of Longmont, grandson Jordan Kovner Benjamin of Longmont, granddaughter Nicole Kovner Miller Straight and husband Kirk Straight of Westport, Conn., and great-granddaughters Emma and Abigail Straight of Westport.
A celebration of her life took place at her daughter's house.
Donald L. Hardesty

Donald L. Hardesty died Saturday, Aug. 27, at the DVA Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. He was 80 years old.
Donald was born in Scotia, N.Y., on Aug. 16, 1925, the son of Llewelyn and Lois Hardesty. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded a Purple Heart.
Donald worked for Rocky Mountain Gas Co. in Aspen for many years. Upon his retirement, he resided in both Sandpoint, Idaho, and Thailand, returning to New York in 2001. He was a world traveler and interested in the environment. He enjoyed skiing, hiking and spending time in the outdoors.
Donald was predeceased by a daughter, Sheryl Hardesty. Survivors include his two daughters, Pamela Hardesty of Tucson, Ariz., and Donna Higley of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; his sister, Elaine (Charles) Turnbull of Scotia; and five grandchildren, Holly Deutchman, Catherine Higley, Clare Higley, Matthew Searl and Sarah Hardesty. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A service with full military honors will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, N.Y. 12211, or DVA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12208.
Mary Jane Ferrara
Carbondale resident Mary Jane Ferrara died Aug. 11, 2005. She was 80 years old.
Mary Jane was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to Kathrine Griffith and Michael Ferrara. Retired, she was an area resident for two and a half years, living in Crystal Meadows senior housing.
Mary Jane was an active member of the Basalt Seniors and enjoyed traveling, and her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Ferrara. She is survived locally by son Michael Ferrara and daughter Janet Ferrara.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Basalt Senior Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Basalt Senior Center.
Sarah Jane Madl

Sara Jane Madl of Carbondale died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in a car wreck in Denver. She was 23 years old.
Sara graduated from Roaring Fork High School in 2000, then went on to be a military police officer for the U.S. Army. After her release from active duty, she resided in Colorado Springs.
She is survived by her mother, Jody Madl; sisters, Rachel Kading and Marissa Madl; and brother, John Madl.
Memorial services will be at the Church of Carbondale at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
Barbara (Miller) Crosby

Barbara (Miller) Crosby died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at her Ridgway home. She was 70 years old.
Born on July 15, 1935, in Tyler, Texas, Barbara was the daughter of Floyd and Frances (Golston) Miller. She spent her childhood in Tyler and Lake City. Barbara went to the Greenbriar prep school and college In West Virginia. Barbara married John Charles Crosby Sr. on Jan. 31, 1969, in Littleton. They had shared 36 years together at the time of her death.
During her lifetime, Barbara worked in tourism and sales. From the early 1970s to the late '80s, she and her family lived in Aspen, where Barbara worked at Hertz Rent-A-Car, Aspen Reservations and owned her own reservations company. She also lived in Denver, Montrose and Sarasota, Fla. She especially enjoyed sewing, knitting, cooking and baking, and gardening. She will be sadly missed.
Surviving family members include her husband, John, of Ridgway; two sons, John Crosby Jr. of Denver and David Crosby of Dewey, Ariz.; five daughters, Laura Dyken and Judy Cline of Angels Camp, Calif., Janet Douthit of Longmont, Melissa Bawmann of Chesapeake, Va., and Cassandra Kraemer of Alpine, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Roy Miller of Taylor, Texas.
A memorial service and celebration of life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Crippen Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose, officiated by Pastor Paul Nystrom. Cremation has taken place. The service will conclude at the chapel. In honor of Barbara's life, her entire family was reunited once again, and wants to send her this message: "We believe you are soaring with the eagles in Aspen. The colors are changing in the mountains you loved. You will always be with us and live in our hearts."

Beverly Strangfeld Richards

Beverly Strangfeld Richards died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005. She was 43 years old.
Beverly was born Aug. 22, 1962. She attended Brigham Young University and Weber College, earning a degree as a registered nurse. She served an LDS mission in Asuncion, Paraguay. Bev was a loving nurse and managed a cardiac care unit in Salt Lake City. In 2003, she began working at Aspen Valley Hospital. She was a talented musician, loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker, skier and snowboarder.
She is survived by her mother, Margot Strangfeld, and siblings Ursula (Noel) Blonquist, Karl (Cherie) Strangfeld, Eva (Martin) Andersen, Tom Strangfeld, Steve (Lisa) Strangfeld, and Chris (James) Gines.
A viewing and graveside services took place in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
Kevin W. MacLeod

Kevin W. MacLeod died at his home Sunday morning. He was 46 years old.
Kevin was born Feb. 20, 1959, in Litchfield, Conn., to Edward and Katherine MacLeod. He grew up in Bantam, Conn., and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1977.
In 1983 he loaded up his car and drove to Alaska, working at Mount McKinley. On the return trip he stopped in Aspen to ski and never left. He pursued a career in architecture, working for Charles Cunniffe, Larry Hagman and Augie Reno before starting his own design firm in Basalt. Kevin loved the mountains - hiking, biking and especially skiing.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, and son Will; his parents, Edward and Katherine; his brother Donald and his wife, Lynn, and their children Scott and Shaun; his brother Bruce and his wife, Carol, and their children MacKenzie and Michelle; nephew Scott and his wife, Heidi, and their children Deegan and Dane; nephew Shaun and his wife, Tina, and their children Linda, Ashley and Connor.
A celebration of Kevin's life will take place at his home at 333 Escalante, on Missouri Heights, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. Feel free to share a special memory of Kevin. (Directions: Take the El Jebel road up the hill. Take your first left, which is Paseo, go straight until Sierra Vista, turn right, go a short distance and turn left on Escalante. The house is on the left-hand side of Escalante.)
Donald Lechuga

Donald Lechuga, of Pueblo, died Sept. 8, 2005, in Pueblo. He was 76 years old.
Donald was born on Nov. 26, 1928, in Deadwood, S.D., to John Lechuga and Priscilla (Gonzales) Lechuga. The family moved to Trinidad when Donald was a boy. He began working in the baking industry at an early age. In September 1946, he enlisted in the Army, where he earned the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal while in Kyushu, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1948 and returned to Trinidad, where he met and married Margaret Sandoval on Dec. 4, 1954.
Donald and Margaret moved to Carbondale in 1956, where he was a miner for many years. He later worked for the city of Glenwood Springs until his retirement in 1991. In 1995 he moved to Pueblo, where he remained until his death.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Margaret, to whom he was devoted for 39 years. He was also preceded by three brothers, George, Abel and John, and two sisters, Eva and Matilda. He is survived by his sons, Phillip (Martha) of Thornton and Donald W. (Kathy) of Carbondale, and daughters, Elaine Bohman (Paul) of Appleton, Wis., and Veronica Smith of Carbondale. He has 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother Adam Lechuga of Denver; two sisters, Esther Zamora of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Rose Garcia of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Farnum Holt Funeral Chapel, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs, with interment to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Carbondale. The family suggests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Rolf Sjuve Scott

Dr. Rolf Sjuve Scott died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, in Aspen after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was 46 years old.
He was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and was a pathologist at the University of Texas in San Antonio.
Rolf is survived by his wife, Mimi, and children Eric, 4, and Ella, 2, as well as family in Sweden. His family had recently made Aspen its permanent home.
James Austin Gould

Jim "Dogman" Gould, born on Labor Day in 1947, died peacefully on Labor Day, Sept. 5, 2005, after a long illness. At his side were his daughter and longtime friend Sharon Alderman.
Jim spent many years in Aspen. Some of his friends then remained his friends to the present. He was involved in the restaurant business and had many other enterprises going at that time. Jim's passions in life were fly-fishing, at which he was a master, family and art.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Michelle Gould, and close friend Sharon Alderman. He is also survived by his sister Carrol Norton and his stepson David Close. He had many years of influence on Ian Alderman, the son of Sharon Alderman.

Elaine Lloyd

Elaine Lloyd died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, in El Jebel. She was 56 years old.
Elaine was born on Aug. 11, 1949 in Tucumcari, N.M., and has been a resident of the Roaring Fork Valley for 32 years. Many remember her kind and dedicated service at the Aspen Police Department.
She was an artist who created pieces of textile, jewelry and linens, and was committed to teaching her skills at her yarn gallery in Basalt. She will be gratefully remembered by children and grandchildren, friends and family, as a creative and generous soul. Elaine inspired those who knew her with her ability to love unconditionally.
She is survived by her parents, Verdian and Sug Fitzner, and sister Diane Fitzner of Palisade. Elaine is the mother of three daughters: Dante Lloyd White of Gulfport, Miss.; Amber Lynn Lloyd of San Francisco and Ashley Jo Lloyd of Carbondale. She was adored by her son-in-law, Michael White, and grandsons Bobby and Beckett. Elaine was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Fitzner of Fruita.
A memorial Service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at First United Methodist Church, 824 Cooper Ave. in Glenwood Springs. Burial will follow at the New Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita. The family respectfully requests the omission of flowers and food. Those who wish may make donation to the charity of their choice in Elaine's memory.
Eleanor M. Love

Eleanor Love (Elle LaCouter) died Sept. 19, 2005, in Seattle. She suffered from a short illness and died very peacefully and definitely on her own terms. She was 66 years old.
Elle was born Oct. 27, 1938, in Brookline, Mass. She was raised there and graduated from Brookline High School in 1956. After teaching skiing at Glen Ellen, Vt., Elle moved to Aspen with her future husband, Scooter LaCouter, and gave birth to her two children, Gary, in 1966, and Lara, in 1969.
Elle spent 20 years in Aspen, raising her children, skiing, working and playing in the community. Her time in Aspen also included a stint on the Mother Puckers women's hockey team. Elle worked at the Molly Brown bar, taught skiing at Buttermilk, and worked for the Aspen Music Festival, the Aspen Club, and the Aspen Art Museum. She then chose to pursue a college degree, attending Regis University, where she graduated cum laude in 1990. For the past 14 years, Elle resided in Seattle, where she watched her grandchildren grow.
Elle's interests included calligraphy, travel, art, theater, reading and trivia. She was also a Boston Red Sox fan - one of her proudest days was her 65th birthday, when the Red Sox won the World Series. She was a great mother whose zest for life and sense of humor touched many people. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her loving children, Gary LaCouter of Aspen and Lara Davidson of Marysville, Wash.; her son-in-law, Jeff Davidson; her pride and joy, Amanda Davidson; her kindred spirit Shannon Davidson; her former husband, Scooter LaCouter; her brother, Donnie MacAdam, and his daughter, Laura; her beloved Gracie; and by the diverse group of people proud to have called her a friend.
A celebration of her life will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Aspen Alps Conference Room.
