Betty Mason
December 17, 2005
Betty Mason died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005.

Betty moved to Aspen with her husband, Bill, in 1953. They bought the Norway Lodge at the base of Lift 1, and Bill was the first director of the Aspen Ski School as well as a co-founder Mason & Morse. Betty was a very active volunteer; she started the Blue Ladies at the hospital and was involved with the Aspen Music Festival and School. The couple were also active in Christ Episcopal Church.

They retired to Arizona in 1986 but returned often, keeping a condo at the Snowmass Club until a few years ago.

Betty lived her life the way she faced her illness - with courage, dignity and resilient strength. She was passionate about her societal contributions and above all else had an enormously strong, giving spirit that sustained her as well as all she loved. Her family is grateful for the memories left, her extraordinary personality, her exemplary character and kindness. She leaves an immeasurable void.

Left to cherish her memory and sustain her spirit are her devoted husband, William "Bill" C. Mason of Sun City West, Ariz.; her daughter and son-in-law Jill and Bill Whitener of Niwot; her daughter and son-in-law Linda and Bill Autrey of Surprise, Ariz.; and her grandchildren William "Billy" R. Gaskins, Mason M. Whitener and Duncan R. and Jacqueline T. Autrey.

A celebration of her life will be held Monday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m., at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 13724 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West, Ariz. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mayo Foundation at 13400 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ 85259, in memory of Betty Mason, for ovarian cancer research at Mayo Clinic, Ariz.
