Althea B. Anderson
Althea B. Anderson, 83, of Hastings, Neb., passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare in Hastings.
Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.
In lieu of flowers, send memorial donations to Hastings Catholic School Trust, Catholic Relief Services, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Condolences may be sent to www.lbvfh.com. Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include 12 children, including Paulette and Dr. Steve Crisman of Idaho Springs.
Stephanie Rasmussen
Stephanie Rasmussen - On Sept. 15, 2010, Stephanie Rasmussen peacefully joined Our Heavenly Father surrounded by her family at home.
Stephanie shared her life with her loving husband of 41 years, Randy Rasmussen. Stephanie and Randy traveled the world with the U.S. Marine Corps, raising their three children. The adventures they shared will be treasured forever.
Stephanie was a most devoted and proud mother, and her family was her greatest joy.
She sparked happiness and laughter throughout all the lives she touched. She passed her amazing gifts of sewing, gardening and creativity on to her children and grandchildren.
Stephanie was born on Oct. 19, 1951, and spent her younger years in Pueblo, Colo., graduating from Pueblo County High School in 1970.
When her husband retired, Stephanie and Randy returned to Colorado, where she worked as a revenue auditor in Black Hawk for 10 years. She loved taking time to enjoy the peacefulness of the creek in her backyard when she was not working.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be forever missed by all who were privileged to be a part of her life.
Stephanie is survived by her life-long love, husband Randy; son Sam (Marny); two daughters, Jennifer (Rob) and Jaime (Ben); grandchildren Chad, Emily, Zachary, Zane and Emma; sisters, Cindy and Tammy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation was on Sept. 17, and the funeral service was on Sept. 18 at Olinger Woods Chapel, Golden.
Jean Hart
Jean Hart, 86, of Raytown, Mo., and formerly of Idaho Springs, passed away on Aug. 28, 2010.
She was born on May 22, 1924, in Shanghai, China. She attended schools in China and California while growing up.
She and her husband, Harry, moved to Idaho Springs in 1967 and left the area in 1984 to move to Oregon. She was active in the United Methodist Church, Navy Mothers and Project Support while living in Idaho Springs.
She was an avid quilter and loved sewing and painting. A memorial service was held in Raytown on Sept 11.
She is survived by six children, Pat Tock, Peggy Harrison, Merry Waldrip, John Hart, Alan Hart and Jim Hart; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Her husband, Harry, preceded her in death in 1992.
She will be missed by her family and friends.
Gene “Geno” Roger Conzelman
Gene “Geno” Roger Conzelman was born Oct. 23, 1952, in Grand Island, Neb., and died Sept. 4, 2010, in Denver.
Geno lived outside of Empire for eight years, and before that up Fall River Road, and in Idaho, Washington, and Alaska. His mom and dad, Dale and Elfrida, were Fall River residents since 1969. Gene went to Clear Creek High School and Red Rocks Community College.
He was a carpenter and drummer (Rockslide) extraordinaire. He was a rock hound, silversmith, mechanic and all-around mountain man. He found and married his high school sweetheart, Aleta Trabue, in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Aleta; daughter, Arlene of Minnesota, and her son, Hunter; son, Clayton of Idaho; and sisters, Yvonne Louthan of Texas and Christine Breitnauer of Denver.
His parents and sister, Marlene, preceded him into the afterlife.
Mary Ann Blackwell
Mary Ann Blackwell of Idaho Springs passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Life Care Center of Evergreen, where she had been a resident since suffering a stroke in August, under the care of Mt. Evans Hospice.
A longtime resident of Idaho Springs, Mrs. Blackwell was born on Feb. 28, 1932, at her mother’s family’s farm near Keyes, Okla., to Sarah Francis Conner and Russell Nelson Seymour. She grew up on the family farm, as well as in Los Angeles, where her stepfather, Charles McBroom, worked in the defense industries, and, finally, in Keyes. A basketball player, Mary graduated from Keyes High School in 1950 as valedictorian of her class.
Declining to pursue a degree in nursing, Mary, on a “lark,” married her steady boyfriend, Benny C. Blackwell, in Clayton, N.M., on Jan. 14, 1951, in a ceremony officiated by the Methodist minister from Keyes and attended by family and a few friends. The wedding site is now a museum.
The couple made their first home in Okmulgee, Okla. The couple threw themselves into church work at the First Baptist Church and keeping up with Benny’s large extended family. All three of the couple’s children were born in Okmulgee.
In 1955, the family moved to Tulsa, where they opened Blackwell’s 66 Service. Mary kept books, often working in the service station’s storage room with one or more of the children at her side. The family vacationed at Blue Spruce Cabins on Chicago Creek, fell in love with Idaho Springs and, in November 1960, moved to Idaho Springs, where the family took over the Phillips 66 station at 13th Avenue and Miner Street.
Mary’s life revolved around family and close friends, and the demands of the business, where she handled bookkeeping and reporting.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Benny, who died on Feb. 5, 1996, after a long illness.
She is survived by children Bruce of New York City, Caryl Voelker and husband James of Brighton, and son Brian and wife Becky of Idaho Springs; and grandchildren Jennifer Voelker of Brighton and Christopher Voelker of Quincy, Calif.; as well as her sister, Betty Schermer, of Modesto, Calif., and brother, Dennis Seymour, of Derby, Kan.; and nieces and nephews.
There will be cremation followed by inurnment at Alvarado Cemetery. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Elks Lodge in Idaho Springs. A reception will follow.
Roger Allen Kotoske
Roger Allen Kotoske, 77, of Champaign, Ill., and Silver Plume was found in his Champaign home on Nov. 19, 2010, after dying of a heart attack a few days earlier.
Born in 1933 to Michael and Louise Kotoske, he was raised in South Bend, Ind., where he attended Catholic schools and Notre Dame University before moving to Denver to earn a bachelor of fine arts and master of arts in fine arts from the University of Denver.
An award-winning, nationally recognized abstract painter and sculptor, he was also a professor of fine arts at the University of Denver from 1958 to 1968 and at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, from 1968 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1977. A dedicated, exceptional teacher, he was popular with his students and left a lasting impact on many.
His artworks are held in more than 100 private collections and were publicly shown at the James Yu Gallery in New York City; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the University of Illinois, Urbana and Gilman Galleries in Chicago; in Denver at The Gallery, Denver Art Museum and Art Yard; the Rockhill Nelson Gallery in Kansas City; and countless other venues. Pieces on current display can be seen in the lobby at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts in Urbana, Ill., and in Denver at the Kirkland Museum and Burns Park.
Roger’s love for nature included fishing, hiking, bird watching and spending his summers in the old mining town of Silver Plume. He was married twice, to Joan and the late Helen Kotoske, and he survived his most recent long-term partner, Sarita Levin. He is missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Tamar Kathleen Tomson; five brothers, Donald, Jerome, Thomas, Brian and David Kotoske and their families; and his many friends throughout the country.

Richard Alan Hodgson
Richard Alan Hodgson of Idaho Springs passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge. He was born March 10, 1953, in Staten Island, N.Y. Rick is the son of Warren L. (Rock) and Marjorie A. Hodgson of Idaho Springs.
Rick was raised in Idaho Springs and graduated from Clear Creek High School in the class of 1971. Rick was employed in a variety of jobs, most recently working the past few years at the Heritage Museum and Visitor Center in Idaho Springs.
Rick enjoyed traveling and was an avid antique collector and dealer.
Among his survivors, he leaves his mother, Marjorie; a son, Brandon Hodgson of Arvada; brothers, Randy Hodgson of Walden, Colo., and Rock Hodgson of Eaton, Colo.; his ex-wife and close friend, Sandi Rizzuto of Idaho Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Warren L. Hodgson, and daughter, Jennifer L. Hodgson.
Hegmann Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Idaho Springs Elks Lodge.

Ken Kucin
Ken Kucin was born Dec. 15, 1929, and died Nov. 17, 2010.
Ken and Lynda Kucin moved to Georgetown in 1973 with their son Kyle. Lynda opened His and Hers Hair Salon and ran it until 1992.
Ken had Lizzy Greer’s Dessert Shop and later operated the Silver Queen Restaurant. He also did the food service at the Clear Creek County jail and catered meals for Public Service on Guanella Pass.
They moved to Crestone, Colo., in 1992 and opened the Desert Sage Restaurant, which they later sold in 2003.
Kyle married Rachel Sandhei in 1999 in Crestone. Both were graduates of Clear Creek High School. They have two children Saxon, 9, and Sage, 6. They reside in Saint Paul, Minn.
Desmond C. Hughes

“Through struggles to the stars.”
The motto of the Royal Air Force seems an appropriate thought in reflecting on the life of former Dumont and Idaho Springs resident Desmond C. Hughes, who left this world on Sept. 30, 2010, from his beloved cabin on the lake in New Mexico.
Des always had an adventurous spirit, beginning in his youth. It was this spirit that he carried with him as he served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He was decorated with prestigious honors following the end of the war. He realized that his life could easily have been lost, as had those of many of his mates. He proceeded to live his life as if every day following the war was a blessing — the icing on the cake, so to speak.
He gave willingly of himself to all he knew and often delighted in helping others with a wide range of projects. Desmond is well loved, a testament to his life of service, and he will be missed by many.
Carol Patterson
Carol Patterson passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Life Care Center of Evergreen after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 81 years old.
Carol Bloomberg was born July 3, 1929, in Denver and spent much of her childhood in Indian Hills. After graduating from Manual High School in 1947, Carol received a degree in vocal music at Hastings College in Nebraska, and then received her nursing degree from the School of Nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago.
As a young wife and mother, Carol settled into Idaho Springs, where she became active in the community while busy raising her two children, Jan and Kirk. After her children were grown, Carol went back to school and earned her master’s degree in health administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. While working toward her master’s degree, Carol was busy as a charge nurse, caring for elderly patients in nursing homes in the Denver area.
Carol is survived by her daughter Jan of Idaho Springs and her son Kirk (Dee) of Evergreen. She is also survived by her three wonderful grandchildren, Erin and Megan Smith and Tim Patterson. “Grandma C” leaves behind a legacy of music, art and poetry. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at United Methodist Church of Evergreen, 3757 Ponderosa Drive.
