Shirley Nell Giles, 84
Shirley Nell Giles died March 12, 2004 at Brighton Gardens in Lakewood, Colo.
She was born in Athens, Texas in 1919. She worked at Ryan Aeronautical as an aircraft draftsman during World War II, and then for 20 years for the San Diego City Schools as a clerical assistant to Doctors of Education in the Elementary Division. Over a 30-year period, she served the Lord in many capacities at St. Marks United Methodist Church Clairemont, San Diego, Calif.
Her husband of 58 years is deceased. She is survived by a son, Nick Giles of Spokane, Wash.; daughter Penny Giles Hand of Conifer, Colo.; grandchildren Brandon Giles of Tennessee, Stefan Giles of Washington, Nancy Kingsley of Idaho, Matthew Remington, Jessica and Whitney Hand of Colorado. She was also predeceased by a son, Larry Giles.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at Church of the Hills in Evergreen. A gathering will follow at 4 p.m., in the home of her daughter Penny Hand in Conifer. Cremains burial will be in a family crypt at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, Calif.

Rose Funk Gibb, 75
Rose Gibb died Thursday, May 20, 2004 in Sun City. Ariz.
She was born Nov. 12 1928 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Lois (McComiskey) Runge.
Rose was a longtime resident of Idledale and the Evergreen area. She worked at Pines Coffee Shop, was on the Idledale Water Board, was secretary at Evergreen Freight Lines and was vice president of Jefferson Industrial Bank.
She and her husband, Jim Gibb, retired to Sun City, Ariz. where Rose enjoyed ceramics, bowling, and gambling, but mostly spending time with her husband.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Lawrence and Clarence Runge and two children, James (Jimmy) Gibb and Shawn Gibb. Rose is survived by her husband, James (Jim) Gibb of Sun City, Ariz.; a sister, Delores (Walt) Stowe of Parker, Ariz.; a brother, John (Kathy) Runge of Stanwood, Wash.; her sons, Richard (Cindy) Funk of Palisade, Colo., Ron (Briana) Funk, Newell, S.D., Harold (Shelly) Funk of Sioux City, Iowa, Darrell (Pat) Funk of Evergreen, and Wayne (Barb) Gibb of Elizabeth, Colo.; and two daughters, Cheri (Rod) Schleicher of Salida, Colo. and Shannan (Raymond) Chastain of Rockport, Mo. Rose is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Melinda Kaye Cline, 29
A memorial service for Melinda Kaye Cline will be held at 10 a.m. June 19, 2004 at Foothills Bible Church, W. Bowles and C-470, in Littleton. She died April 18, 2004.
Melinda was the daughter of Foster and Hermie Cline, former longtime residents of Evergreen. Melinda was born Dec. 20, 1974. She graduated from Bear Creek High School in 1994, and then spent four years in the United States Army. At the time of her death, Melinda lived in Goodland, Kan. She was employed by Kit Carson Correctional Facility in Burlington, Colo.
In addition to her parents, Melinda is survived by two sisters, Robin Cline (Ken) Kelly of Littleton, and Melanie Sturtevant of Burlington Colo.; three brothers, Andrew (Molly) Cline of Bow, Wash., J. Winfield (Molly) Cline of Spokane, Wash., and Brady Vance. She also has a daughter, Alena Marie Leyva of California; three nieces, Kathryn Kelly, Sarah Kelly and Laura Kelly of Littleton; one nephew, Ferris Winfield Cline of Spokane, Wash.

Ernest Thomson Fraser Richards Jr., 85
Fraser Richards died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 in Sterling Heights, Mich., from complications of pneumonia.
Fraser was born in St. Paul, Minn. on Dec. 13, 1918. He grew up there and in White Bear Lake, Minn., attending Summit Academy, Chaote School in Wallingford, Conn., and then Bard College prior to enlisting in the Army during World War II. During the war, Maj. Richards had a distinguished service record, landing in Marseilles in 1943, and commanding his men throughout France in the chemical warfare unit.
After the war, Fraser returned to St. Paul to work in his familys department store, Schunemans, later known as Daytons. Frasers love of skiing, flying and the outdoors led him to pursue a colorful life. He was one of the first members of the National Ski Patrol, and in 1952 moved his wife and three small children to Jackson, Wyo. where he owned a Ford agency and ran a dude ranch. In 1955, the family moved to Denver where he worked as the western regional manager for the Kiekhaever Corporation and Mercury Outboard Motor, and continued to be involved in skiing, teaching at Berthoud Pass, Winter Park and then Loveland. He was an active pilot and a member of the Civil Air Patrol, taking part in many search operations. Fraser later ran a flight school in Hawaii, a ski area in Colorado (Sunlight) and had an active career as a private investigator. He lived in Evergreen for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife, T.J., of Sterling Heights, Mich., a daughter, Sally Richards of Evergreen; Lt. Col. Ernest Thomson Fraser Richards III of Lakeville Minn.; Ted Richards of Steamboat Springs; and grandchildren Mary Richards of Lakeville, Minn., AJ and Natalie Stahl, and Aubrey and Galen Kerr of Evergreen. He was preceded in death by his son, Peter Fraser Richards.
He will be fondly missed for his smile, the twinkle in his eye, and his adventurous spirit. The funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver.
Rick Hunter, 78
His angels took him home on May 17, 2004.
Rick was born in Kansas City, Mo. on Dec. 2, 1925. He was a World War II naval air veteran. He flew helicopters, transport planes and jets. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 13 years.
He graduated from LSU with a Bachelor of Science in geology and combined his love of flying with his degree and became a photo geologist. He was a consulting geologist on Interstate 70, the mountain corridor between Morrison and Floyd Hill. Then, working for Mene Grande, a subsidiary of Gulf Oil, he worked in Peru, Venezuela and Indonesia as a petroleum geologist and was the first geologist to find oil on the island of Timor northwest of Australia. He finished out his geologist career with the U.S. Geology Survey, Minerals Management and the Bureau of Land Management. He retired then to have a 15-year career with Evergreen Hardware where he became an expert in small engine and chain saw repairs.
Rick is survived by his wife, Mary Hunter; two sons, C. Michael Heywood (Pat) of Spokane, Wash., and Christopher A. Heywood (Linda) of Rocky River, Ohio; daughter Carole Martin (Jim) of Arvada; five grandchildren, Sarah, Mathew and Elizabeth Heywood of Arvada, Lillien Jiang Heywood of Rocky River, Ohio, and Kevin M. Blodgett of Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Dean Hunter of Lakewood and Hal Hunter of Loveland; and Betty Seastrand of St. Joseph, Ill.
There will be a funeral mass on Tuesday, May 25, 11 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church in Evergreen, with a reception in the church hall immediately following the mass. A private burial service will be at a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Richard W. Sittner, 82
Richard W. Sittner, 82, died May 4, 2004 in Kittredge. He was born Dec. 27, 1921 in Schenectady, NY. His daughter, Leslie Ruth Sittner, of Edinburgh, NY; his son, Lance E. Sittner, of St. Louis, and his granddaughter, Jessica Ruth Schwarting, of Baltimore, survive him.
Mr. Sittner graduated from Rennselear Polytechnic Institute in 1943. He was an electrical engineer for the General Electric Co. for 28 years. He retired to Colorado in the 1970s and worked as an electrical engineering consultant until his death. He was an avid skier and outdoorsman.
A celebration of his life was held Wednesday, May 12, at OFallon Park in Kittredge.
Florence Marion Eleanore Dappen, 88
Florence Dappen died Saturday, May 8, 2004 at the Life Care Center of Evergreen of complications from congestive heart failure and Diskitis. Prior to her death she lived at the Inn at Lakewood.
Florence was born on Aug. 22, 1915 in Chicago. It was here that she met her husband, Mathias Dappen, to whom she was married until his death in 1987. Florence and Mat lived in Iowa City from 1955 to 1967. In 1967 they moved to Southern California where she lived until she moved to Colorado in 2002. Her focus and her passion was her family.
She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her, for her unwavering faith, her frequent beaming smile, her love of food and unmatched talent in cooking, her fondness for bridge and cards in general and her enjoyment of the outdoors.
In addition to her children and their spouses; Jerry Henderson, Rosie Dappen, and Victor Salas; she is survived by four grandchildren; Debbie Burke, Kristie Henderson, Roxanne, and Olivia Salas. Other survivors include her nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Inn at Lakewood, 555 S. Pierce St., on Saturday, May15 at 11 a.m., with lunch to follow.

Nancy E. Reade, 78
"Just this side of heaven, is a place called the Rainbow Bridge"
On July 29, 2004, we lost a loving wife, mother and friend, Nancy E. Reade, formerly of Evergreen. Nancy is survived by her husband, Harold L. Reade of Fort Collins, her two children and their spouses: Susan and Ted Williams and Bruce and Lori Reade; and grandchildren Kristen, Eric, James, Heather and Andrew. She also leaves behind many friends throughout the country whose lives she touched.
Nancy was born July 2, 1926 in Whittier, Calif. She graduated with honors from Whittier High School in 1944. In 1948 she graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in advertising from the School of Commerce. After teaching and working in retail sales, Nancy married Harold L. Reade in 1954.
An avid tennis player, Nancy competed in age group tournaments in Northern Colorado and the California Gold country. Nancy was also an active member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and alumni organizations in Colorado and California and she was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church. In the mid 1980s, Nancy shared her knowledge of the areas history as a tour guide at the Hiwan Homestead museum in Evergreen.
Her associates at her beloved St. Matthews Episcopal Church in San Andreas, Calif. will miss Nancy, as will her friends and traveling companions she accompanied to far-flung destinations including the Copper Canyon, Mexico, the Sea of Cortez, Washington, D.C. and all the Hawaiian islands. Her family will miss her humor, insight and guidance most of all.

Dolores Mae (Warner) Page, 69
Dolores Mae Page was a longtime resident of Evergreen, from 1965 to 1996. Dolores Mae Warner was born on May 4, 1935 in Detroit Mich. She was the oldest of eight children born to George M. Warner, and Dorothy M. (Wagner) Warner. She is the sister of Arlene Brandewie of Calabasas, Calif., Mary Ellen Jones of Alexandria, Va., Susan Hallahan of Redford, Mich., Dorothy (Dotty) Clark of Farmington Hills, Mich., George Warner of Lincoln Park, Mich., Theresa Dyc of Redford, Mich. and Patty Ahlgren of Redford, Mich.
Dolores died July 20, 2004 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Dolores spent her early childhood at several military bases around the United States, as her father served in the U.S. Air Force. When her father left the service after World War II, the family settled in Detroit, Mich. Dolores graduated from Immaculata High School in Detroit in 1953.
Not long after high school she met the love of her life, Paul Page. They were married October 20, 1956. In March 1963, Dolores and Paul moved to Denver and then to Evergreen in 1965. In August 1965, they adopted a baby girl, Paula Angela, the first of four. James Joseph came along in 1966, Peter Christopher in 1968, and Susan Marie in 1972.
Dolores delighted in making a home for her family. She was devoted to her husband and four children, and later her grandchildren. She was very active in her church, Christ the King Catholic Church in Evergreen. She had a deep faith in God. She loved the mountains and Colorado, and passed that love on to her children. In 1969, Dolores and Paul purchased land near Jefferson and Tarryall, Colo. The family spent many happy weekends camping on the property.
In 1996, Paul retired after 24 years at The Denver Post. He and Dolores retired to Clearwater, Fla. They spent seven years in the Sunshine State, but the call of the mountains and Colorado was strong. In July 2003, Dolores and Paul returned to Colorado, taking up residence in Hugo, Colo., to be closer to their two daughters five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. They were very happy in Hugo. The set up house in a nice little apartment and spent time shopping at the local store, visiting the library, Catholic church, secondhand store and fishing at Kinney Lake. Dolores delighted in cooking for anyone who would stop by, from the neighborhood kids to the parish priest. They made many friends in Hugo who enjoyed seeing them around town.
Dolores was preceded in death by her father, George Warner, her mother, Dorothy Warner, and granddaughter, Jamie Page. Dolores is survived by her six sisters, Arlene, Mary Ellen, Susan, Dorothy (Dotty), Theresa and Patty; one brother, George; her husband of 47 years, Paul Page; her four children, Paula (husband Dennis) Trigg, Jim Page, Peter (wife Rhonda) Page, and Susan (Husband Dane) Threlkeld; grandchildren, Shayne Rust, Morgan Trigg, Christina, Crawford, Justine Page, Annette Page, Josh Page, Taylor Threlkeld, Lauren Threlkeld, Katey Threlkeld; one great-grandchild, Abigail Crawford; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation was held at Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel of Peace on July 23, 2004 and funeral services were July 24 with Father Paul Wicker officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs. Donations may be made in Dolores name to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, P.O. Box 790, Limon, CO 80828.
Kenneth M. Luzadder, 82
Kenneth M. Luzadder, a retired businessman who was a resident of Evergreen since 1995, died early Friday morning at St. Josephs Hospital in Denver following complications from an illness.
He was a native of Hartford City, Ind. and had lived near the central Indiana community of Muncie for most of his life. He owned service stations there, was an independent insurance agent, and retired in 1985 from Marsh Supermarkets of Indiana, where he was communications supervisor. Mr. Luzadder retired to Evergreen to be near children and grandchildren.
He worked part time here as a tax accountant with his daughter-in-law, Nancy, for several years. He was a member of Lookout Mountain Community Church at Genesee and was an active member of several mens fellowship groups in Evergreen. An aviation buff most of his life, Mr. Luzadder started flying small, open cockpit airplanes as a young man in Indiana; he held a private pilots license on and off throughout his life. He was trained as a mechanic and owned and operated two service stations in Muncie before opening his own insurance agency. He graduated from high school in Hartford City in 1940.
Mr. Luzadder is survived by his wife, Betty, and one son, Dan, both of Evergreen; a daughter, Jayne Ann, of Norris, Tenn.; a brother, Dudley, of Fremont, Ind.; two sisters, Helen McMichael of Hartford City, Ind. and Madalynn Doolittle of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 22, at Lookout Mountain Community Church in Genesee, with viewing beginning at 10 a.m. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Ken Luzadder Memorial Fund at Lookout Mountain Community Church, 534 Commons Drive, Golden, CO 80401. Evergreen Mortuary is handling funeral arrangements.
Wilbur J. Wilson Jr., 90
A private service for Wilbur J. Wilson Jr., 90, of Utica, Ohio was held with Rev. Richard Riedel officiating. Burial was in South Lawn Cemetery. Wilson died June 22, 2004 at Life Care Center of Evergreen following a short illness.
Wilbur was born April 20, 1914 in Utica to the late Wilbur J. Sr. and Helen (Gregg) Wilson. He graduated from Utica High School, then Denison University in 1936.
After graduation from Denison, he returned to Utica and was associated with the family bank until it was sold to what is now National City Bank. Widely known in banking circles, he retired in 1974. He was active in Phi Gamma Delta, the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers, and the Ohio State and American Bankers Associations. He was also a member of the UTK Club and a former volunteer fireman. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and attended Presbyterian churches in Utica and Georgetown, Colo.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Viola M. (Jacobs) Wilson, and Martha Wilson, the widow of his deceased son. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Wilbur J. Wilson III, who died on April 11, 1986.

Bryan Russell McFarland
Bryan Russell McFarland of Dumont, Colo. died July 4, 2004. He is survived by his children, Sean James McFarland, Kelly Erin McFarland and Caitlin Ellen McFarland-Pena, all of Denver. He is also survived by his brother, Patrick James McFarland of Bellingham, Wash., half-brothers, Michael McFarland of California, and Daniel Paul McFarland of Germany. Private internment.
Edwin 'Ed' Ellis Kearton, 64
Edwin "Ed" Ellis Kearton, born April 20, 1940 in Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colo.
Ed graduated in 1958 from Howard High School, Ellicott City, Md. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended the University of Texas, Austin. He served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1958 to 1964, with one tour in Vietnam as Military Press Corps. Ed retired to McKinney, Texas to live with his daughter and grandchildren, spending his summers in Conifer working for his nephew, Tony Clem, at Rolling Ridge Deck Company.
Ed was predeceased by his mother, Carrie Mae Etta Walter, brother, Donald Stuart Kearton, son, Mark Ellis Kearton; and is survived by father George Wesley Lee Walter, three children, Ernest "Bucky" Kearton, Marie Edwina Gregory, Kristen Lynette Ross; six grandchildren; sisters Nancy Marie Webster, Vicki Louise Clem, and Ann Elizabeth Quigg; brother John Milton Walter; and his faithful dog Mozart.
Ed was an avid deep-sea fisherman and reader who enjoyed the outdoors and took great joy in spending time with his children, grandchildren and family. He was known for his quick wit and generosity of spirit and will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Betty Ann Gross, 66
Betty Ann Gross died Jan. 31, 2005. She was born April 6, 1938, in Deport, Texas, but lived most of her life in Fort Worth, Texas. Betty moved to Colorado to be near her grandchildren, Ashley and Dan. Her absence is felt by her family, her friends and the wonderful people at Life Care Center of Evergreen. She will be greatly missed.
Andrew Wilson O'Neill, 46
Andrew Wilson O'Neill died Jan. 22, 2005, in Evergreen. He was born Oct. 8, 1958, in Sheboygan, Wisc.
John W. Rice, 78
Lifetime resident John Rice died Jan. 10, 2005, at his home in Evergreen. He was born to Charles and Orlean Rice in Evergreen. He worked for Jefferson County for 18 years, and then owned his own welding business. There are seven generations of Johns family in the Evergreen area.
David Beecher Hahn, 80
David Beecher Hahn of Harvard Avenue, Pagosa Springs, Colo., formerly of Kittredge, died Jan. 22, 2005, at Pine Ridge Extended Care Facility. He was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Willimantic, Conn., son of the late Ray L. and Elizabeth S. Hahn, formerly of Niantic, Conn., and Cortez, Fla.
