Lassie Maddox Greenan
Lassie Maddox Greenan passed away on Feb. 15, 2006. She was born July 25, 1913, the daughter of William Clay and Hilda Josephine Maddox, the founders of the Maddox Ice Company.
The Maddox ice ponds, located east of Shawnee across from Platte Canyon High School and Fitzsimmons Middle School, were created in 1903. The business had two large ice houses, a boarding house for the workers, a building to store the boats and a depot/office building.
The ice was loaded on the train and taken to Denver. A typical ice crop could require as many as 600 freight cars. Maddox quit cutting ice at this location in 1937 when the railroad ceased operating.
Lassie had many good memories of the Maddox Ice Company and devoted much of her life to preserving its history.
She is survived by her husband Warren Greenan, daughter Joyce Boogren, son John Maus of Denver, son Warren Maus of Santa Monica, Calif., stepson Marvin Maus, Jr. and stepdaughter Joni Lemaire. She also had 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Samuel Derek Pitts
Samuel Derek Pitts died on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, in Spanish Forks, Utah.
Pitts was born on November 28, 1986, in Helena, Montana. He was raised in Lake George and attended South Park High School for three years.
He had been living in Utah for only two months, where he was working in a meat packing plant. He was planning to return to Colorado on Saturday, March 11.
He is survived by his parents, Larry and Cindy Pitts, of Lake George; his brother, Duane, of Clovis, Calif.; his sister, Sylvia of Montrose, Colo.; his sister, Melissa, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A service will be held for him on Saturday, March 25, at the Lake George Bible Church at 8989 County Road 90 in Lake George, Colo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Front Range Equine Rescue at P.O. Box 38068, Colorado Springs, Colo., 80937.
Frances Larsen
Frances Larsen of Guffey, died on March 15, 2006, at her home. Frances was born to Everett and Anna (Rice) Rains on Nov. 3, 1918 in Beatrice, Neb. She was a teacher at Cripple Creek/Victor High School for 20 years. She had lived near Guffey since 1970. She married Paul A. Larsen on Nov. 3, 1969. Paul passed away on Feb. 4, 2004.
Frances is survived by her daughter; Janice Snare of Cripple Creek and Guffey and sons; Jim, Lloyd and Norbie Larsen, all of Cripple Creek. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers. Besides her husband, Frances was predeceased by her parents and two sons.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Cripple Creek.
Arrangements were made by Mountain Memorial in Divide.

James Andrew Powell
James Andrew (Jim) Powell formerly of Como, Colo. and a recent resident of Wimberley, Texas, died suddenly at his home at the age of 81. Born on Sept. 11, 1924 to George and Cora Daugherty Powell in Churchville, Va., Jim spent more than 40 years working for the International Harvester Corporation. He retired as the Secretary Treasurer of the International Truck Dealership in Denver, Colo.
A skilled woodworker and an avid hunter and fisherman, Jim served as President of the Elkhorn Ranch Homeowners Association, President of the South Park Ambulance District and in various church leadership positions over the years.
Jim is survived by his wife, Harriet, as well as by his children, Roy Powell of Dallas, Texas and Nancy Armstrong, of Denton, Texas. In addition, eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren survive him.
Memorial Services were held at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Wimberley and will be held on April 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Denver.
Internment will be at Fairmont Cemetery in Denver.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Denver.
Mary Morrow Gardner
1917-2006
Mary Gardner, long time South Park resident, passed away in her home at Gardner Ranch on April 5, 2006. Mary Morrow was born in Los Angeles, Cali. on Feb. 22, 1917 to James Brian Morrow and Grace Calhoun. Mary spent the next 14 years in the coal mining town of Dawson, NM, where her father was chief engineer of the Dawson mine.
In 1929 the family moved to Raton, NM where Mary finished high school. She went on to Highlands University at Las Vegas, NM, for a Junior English degree, then to Denver University for her BA, and DU for her masters in English literature.
In the fall of 1938 Mary bought her South Park homestead, which joined Gardner Ranch, and first met her future husband, Byron. By 1941, war was inevitable, and Mary went to San Diego, Cali. and gained employment with The Civil Service procurement office of Consolidated Aircraft, builders of the B24 Liberator bomber. In early 1944 she transferred to the Weather Bureau in Ketchikan, AK, to be part of an early warning program to detect balloon carried Japanese incendiary bombs as well as track weather for allied forces. Mary returned to South Park in 1947, moved back to her homestead, re-kindled her relationship with Byron Gardner, and they married in 1948.
During the lean times in the early to mid 1950’s Mary supplemented the ranch income by writing romance stories for various magazines owned by the Cosmopolitan magazine group. She worked in the old Fairplay USFS office from 1958 till 1963 as administrative assistant to the forest ranger, and at the local selective service draft board from 1965 to 1968. From 1969 till the present Mary lived a very reclusive lifestyle on the ranch.
She will be deeply missed by the family. She is survived by her son, James B. Gardner and wife Amanda, step-grandchildren Benjamin Thober of Fairplay and Samantha Bertin of Jefferson. grandson Brant and wife Carmen Gardner of Lincoln, Neb. and great-grandsons Steven and Christopher Gardner, enlisted marines.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Byron C. Gardner and Grandson Brian J. Gardner in 1994. Cremation and Private Services are planned. Please direct donations or memorials in lieu of flowers to benefit the Park County Crisis Center in Bailey.
Dr. Loren Meyerink
Dr. Loren Meyerink, 62, of Bailey, Colo. died at his home on April 10, 2006. He was born in Platte, S.D., to Henry and Alice (Zylstra) Meyerink. He received his Ph.D. in Neuropsychology from the University of Arizona in 1982.
He was in private practice in Denver all his professional life.
His parents and two brothers preceded Loren in death. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Shayden (Jennifer) Ward, Marisa (Mike) Lahey, and Alicia Meyerink; three grandchildren, a sister, a brother and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He loved his family, camping, horses, hunting and “projects.”
A memorial service will be held in Bailey on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 9 a.m. at Platte Canyon High School in the Canyon Room. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in the name of Alicia Meyerink to be used for Loren’s favorite charities.
Esther Louise Bragg
Esther Louise Bragg, 72, of Raton, NM and formerly Wagon Tongue, Colo., died on April 13, 2006, in Cañon City, Colo. She is survived by her husband, Sherman J. Bragg, and daughters Toni Francis of Lake George, Colo., Cheryl Parks of Florence, Colo., and K.C. Houck of Parker, Colo; as well as 5 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren.
Private cremation was held.
Vivian Alesta East
Vivian Alesta East, daughter of LeRoy Jay and Maxine Elnora (Edgington) Frank, was born at home on Aug. 6, 1938, in Bucyrus, Ohio. She went to her Heavenly Home on April 2, 2006, at 9:25 a.m. at the age of 67 years, 8 months, 26 days.
At age 5, Vivian moved with her family to Commerce City, Colo., where she attended school and played accordion in a marching band.
In 1959, she married John A. Tomoff. The marriage was short-lived, but was blessed with a daughter.
Vivian spent many years working and caring for her daughter, and in January of 1972 they moved to Shawnee, Colo.
On June 21, 1972, Vivian married John Owen East. They shared a great love and she gladly accepted his children as her own. John and Vivian made their home in the mountains she loved in Shawnee.
Vivian had many hobbies and talents. In her younger years she enjoyed doing ceramics, and in later years she spent hours crocheting angels and bed dolls.
She had many treasured friends and enjoyed spending time with them. She made new friends everywhere she went. She never missed a day of Bible reading and devotion and never, ever failed to say “God Bless You” to everyone she encountered.
She will be remembered as a strong, loving woman with a warm smile, a tender heart and an amazing faith.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her beloved husband, John. Left to treasure her memory are her sister, Elnora Maxine (Frank) Kujawski and husband, Leonard, of Smithville, Texas; brother, Arnold Frank, of Kenniwick, Wash., and brother, LeRoy Forbes, and wife, Donna (Dulin) Frank; daughter, Lolita (Turner) Reinwalt, and husband, Bob, of Inavale, Neb.; daughter, LaVaughn (East) Shipman, and husband, Mel, of Curtis, Neb.; son, Melvin, and wife, Brenda (Phillips) East; grandchildren: Laurine Marie Reinwalt of Chadron, Neb.; Brandi Alesta Reinwalt of Inavale, Neb.; Lisa Marie (Shipman) Fischer and husband, Dennis, of Lincoln, Neb.; Lori Lynn (Shipman) Schmidt and husband, Rex, of Omaha, Neb.; Levi Owen East of Seward, Neb.; great-grandchildren: Kari Marie, Christopher Dean and Shaun David Fischer; Mackenzie Reed and Jackson Cade Schmidt; great-great-granddaughter, Macey; and a host of relatives and friends too numerous to mention. “God Bless You All.”
A viewing will take place Friday, April 7, 2006, at Newcomer Family Funeral Home, West Metro Chapel, 901 S. Sheridan Blvd., Lakewood.
Services will be held Saturday, April 8, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Platte Canyon Community Church in Bailey, Colo., with Pastor Larry Kalb officiating. Burial will be at Horn Cemetery in Bailey.
A memorial will be established for Platte Canyon Community Church for all the love and support over the years.
