for the next 25 years. After their children were grown and left
home, Muriel and John purchased the Fairplay Hotel in Fairplay,
Colo. They owned and managed the hotel for 12 years until their
retirement in 1984 to Grand Junction, Colo. In 1982 they built the
Western Inn also in Fairplay, which they still own today.

Barbara J. Swancara
Barbara Swancara, age 67, a resident of Montrose, died late
Friday night, Jan. 10, 2003 at Montrose Memorial Hospital after a
sudden and unexpected illness. Barbara Jean Tabb was born in
Denver, Colo. on Sept. 22, 1935, the daughter of Ruth and James
Tabb.
While she was a relative newcomer to Montrose, she was proud to
be a third-generation Coloradoan. Her ancestors were miners in
the Blackhawk-Central City region. Her father was born in
Blackhawk, but moved to Denver when his mother said she did
not want to lose any more relatives to accidents in the mines.
Barbara grew up in Denver. After graduation from South High
School, she enrolled at Colorado A. & M. College (now Colorado
State University) to study forestry. But that was not the time for
women in the field. In the Freshmen Forestry class there were
about 150 students, only three of them were women. Barbara left
the college, and attended business school in Denver. She was, for
awhile, employed by the University of Denver. She married Frank
Swancara Jr. on Dec. 23, 1960 and raised two children. She was a
stay-at-home mom. She was active as a scout leader and as a 4-H
leader. After the children grew up she worked at Windy Peak
outdoor Education School in Jefferson County, and was one of
the founders of the Park County Crisis Center. Barbara and Frank
lived in Park County, southeast of Bailey for about 23 years
where Frank worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Before retiring
and coming to Montrose they resided in Pennsylvania for eight
years.
Upon arrival in Montrose she became an active member and also
was an officer of the Montrose newcomers club. She became
involved as a family partner with Montrose Habitat for Humanity,
and was most active as a volunteer and Board Member of The
Montrose County Historical Society. She had been elected as
President of the Historical Society and presided over her first
meeting on January 2.
Surviving family members are her husband of 42 years, Frank
Swancara Jr., of their Montrose home; one son Mark Swancara
and wife Sally of Bailey, Colo.; one daughter Kathy SwancaraStuerke
and her husband Logan also of Bailey, Colo.; and three
grandchildren Heath Stuerke, Matthew and Teri Swancara.
In lieu of flowers, her friends are invited to make a memorial
contribution to the Montrose County Historical Society Museum,
P.O. Box 1882, Montrose, Colo. 81402
Cremation has taken place and no service is planned.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Crippen
Funeral Home.

Janice Maxine Nettleman
Janice Maxine Nettleman, 90, of Loveland, Colo., died January
11, 2003 at McKee Medical Center’s Hospice Care Center in
Loveland.
She was born August 17, 1912 in Lawrence, Kan., to Guy Joseph
and Grace Swisher Hulsizer. Her family moved from Kansas in
1913 and settled in Long Beach, Calif. She wed John Benjamin
Nettleman on October 11, 1935 and so began her adult life’s
journey with her husband and three loving children. Early in her
marriage, she lived on their dairy farm in Hines/Paramount, Calif.
During WWII, they sold the dairy and moved to Long Beach
where Mr. Nettleman worked at McDonald Douglas. After the
war, they looked to a new venture called Dowman Products and
still later, they owned and operated Crawford Press, a print shop
in Long Beach.
When Mr. Nettleman retired, they had an opportunity to move to
Fairplay, Colo. where they would appraise mountain properties
for the Park County Assessor’s Office and enjoy five years in a
small mountain community on top of the Continental Divide.
When her husband of 38 years passed away in 1973, she moved
to Seal Beach, Calif. and lived in Seal Beach Leisure World
Retirement Community. After 23 years there a decision to come
back to Colorado was made, and she found her way to The Good
Samaritan Retirement Village in Loveland in 1996. She moved to
North Shore Manor in Loveland in April of 2002.
First and foremost, she loved her family and friends. She
performed volunteer work for her community and her church. She
was an avid Bridge player. She belonged to P.E.O. Chapter IM in
Loveland and P.E.O. Chapter RT in Seal Beach. P.E.O.
fellowship and sisterhood was a comfort and joy in her life. She
enjoyed gardening and was always ready to go — whether a short
drive across town or a trip across the country. Her earthly journey
has ended. Her family and many friends will truly miss her
beautiful smile, her humor and her love of life.
She is survived by her son, George Henry Nettleman and his wife
Barbara of Canyon Lake, Calif.; two daughters, Nancy Ann
Stimson and Valerie Jean Tilley and her husband Doug, all of
Fairplay, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; nieces
and a nephew. After cremation, a family memorial service will be
held in Fairplay to celebrate her life.
