Mayme 'Tillie' JESSUP

Mayme 'Tillie' JESSUP, co-owner of Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch in Loveland for more than 60 years, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at 5 p.m.

She was one month shy of her 94th birthday.

To thousands of guests who visited the ranch since 1946, Tillie was known for her welcoming smile, her loving concern with their comfort, and her baking, especially her famous cinnamon rolls.

Often called the 'Heart in the Heart-J Brand, Tillie was beloved by hundreds of staff who worked at the ranch over the years. As the author of ranch newsletters and guest correspondence, she artfully chronicled the history of the ranch, its staff and its 'critters, as she called the ranch animals.

She received a standing ovation at the 2006 Bravo Entrepreneur Awards ceremony in Fort Collins.

Tillie Jessup was recognized locally for her support of land conservation. In recent years, more than 1, 700 acres of Ranch property were placed under conservation easements, protecting them from future development.

'My husband and I always hoped this ranch jewel could be preserved for future generations, she said. In 1999, the Larimer County commissioners publicly recognized her efforts to preserve open space.

Born Mayme Inez Tomlinson on Feb. 13, 1913, in Big Flat, Ark., she moved with her parents and three sisters to Colorado during the Great Depression.

Despite achieving highest academic honors at Ault High School, her family's financial situation prevented her from realizing her dream of attending college.

While serving as secretary at the high school, she met Maurice Jessup, an educator and the love of her life. They were married in 1938 and celebrated 55 years of marriage before Maurice died in 1993.

The Jessups purchased Sylvan Dale in 1946 at the close of World War II, just before Maurice's discharge from the Army Air Corps. Starting with 120 acres, they gradually increased the ranch holdings to 5, 000 acres by 1976.

Some 2, 000 of those acres were sold to recover from the Big Thompson flood of that year. Tillie Jessup provided care, food and lodging to volunteers from Mennonite Disaster Service during their yearlong assistance program for flood victims in the canyon. The Jessups donated the ranch to be used as headquarters for the effort.

Tillie was a tireless worker who continued to bake until she reached 90. She was loved by all who met her and was especially beloved by children of all ages.

Tillie is survived by her two children, David Jessup and Susan Jessup, who continue to run the ranch, along with five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and two sisters (Zee Jackson of Metairie, La., and Maggie Steward of Greeley). Grandchildren include Yohanna Labofish, Matt Jessup, and Luke Jessup (children of David and Linda Jessup), all of Silver Spring, Md., and Drew Alcazar of Phoenix, and Lisa Hagen of Bend, Ore. (children of Susan Jessup). Great-grandchildren include Dimitri and Sawyer Hagen, and Lyla Jessup.

Friends who wish to do so are invited to make donations in Tillie Jessup's honor to the Legacy Land Trust in Fort Collins, Larimer County Hospice in Fort Collins or to the Mennonite Disaster Service in Akron, Pa. Donations may be mailed in care of Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S. U.S. 287, Fort Collins, CO 80525.
