She graduated from North High School, Omaha, and from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa. A fine student, she achieved academic honors including Phi Beta Kappa honors.
Her first job was teaching in a one-room school near Mancos, Colo. Each day she rode a mule to school and built a fire for her first- through eighth-grade students. In 1940, she moved to Denver where she met and married John Clarke in 1945.

She also still holds four American records for ages 75-80 and 80-85 at 200 and 400 meters, all set more than 15 years ago.
