SHINKLE, David L.

David Shinkle of Berthoud died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Poudre Valley Hospital after a brief illness. He was 56.
He was born Dec. 14, 1947, in San Mateo, Calif., to Bradford and Mary (Binford) Shinkle.
Mr. Shinkle came to Boulder from California in 1966 to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder. He lived in Boulder for 20 years and in Berthoud for 17 years.
He married Sherri Kamas on July 28, 1979, in Peaceful Valley.
Mr. Shinkle was an elementary teacher in the Boulder Valley School District for 33 years.
He will be remembered by his family and hundreds of students as a man who was passionate about his family, his friends, his job, the outdoors, Winnie the Pooh and the Chicago Cubs.
Mr. Shinkle was preceded in death by his mother.
He is survived by his wife of Berthoud; two sons, Eric and Tyler; two daughters, Saraswoti and Kanchana; his father; and two sisters, Ruth and Barb.
A celebration of Mr. Shinkles life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Chautaqua Auditorium in Boulder. Cremation will be handled by Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

SPRAGUE, Ralph R.
Oct. 4, 1928 - Sept. 28, 2004
Born into the union of two Colorado pioneer families, Ralph was the middle of 11 children.
He was born on the Vogl family farm near Fort Lupton, to Arthur Sprague and Barbara (Vogl) Sprague. He lived most of his life in Weld and Boulder counties.
He graduated from Longmont High School in 1948. He and his best friend, Roy Hervey, joined the U.S. Navy soon thereafter. After his return from the Navy, he married Shirley Massoni. They were divorced in 1962.
He was a Colorado State Patrolman for approximately 71/2 years, serving Jefferson and Weld counties.
He spent almost 35 years at the Rocky Flats nuclear plant near Golden, retiring in 1992.
In 1963, he married the love of his life, Marjorie Smith Lanter, in Westminster. They moved to the Longmont area in 1966. They lived on a farm southeast of Longmont.
While keeping abreast of available new technology, he was adept at farming with used equipment. In 1974, the couple moved to the Gaynor Lake subdivision south of Longmont, where they lived for many years.
Ralph had many interests so many connected with water and snow sports. His hidden dream was to fly he did tandem hang gliding a few times, which was a highlight of his life. He spent several years involved with the Boy Scouts, including three years as co-committee chairman along with his wife.
He will always be remembered for his love of family. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed their sporting events. He and Margie enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to visit many interesting places, Hawaii being their favorite.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Sprague; a sister, Alice Fales; a granddaughter, Angel Sprague; a nephew, Byron Sprague; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Sprague and Esther Sprague; two brothers-in-law, Robert Buffington and Gene Bennet; his father-in-law, Frank Smith of Denver; his mother-in-law, Norma Kellar of Longmont; and his stepmother-in-law, Josephine Smith of Denver.
He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Marjorie; their children, Zeina Smith and her life partner Ron Gittlein of Longmont, Roy Sprague, aka Mark Mason of Greeley, Guy Lanter and his wife Karen of Berthoud, Sharon McQueen and her husband Keith of Orem, Utah, Bob Sprague and his wife Chris of Loveland, and Tami Sprague and Wade Smith of Johnstown; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six brothers, William Sprague of Mead, Leo Sprague and his wife Laurene of Wray, Joe Sprague and his wife Judy of Evans, Neil Sprague of Loveland, John Sprague of Florence, Colo., and Ned Sprague of Loveland; two sisters, Thelma Bennet of Story, Wyo., and Mary Van Lew and her husband Don of Denver; a sister-in-law and her husband, Shirley and Norbert Alber of Bridgeport, Neb.; two brothers-in-law, David Evans and his wife Henriette of Williamsport, Pa., and LuVerne Fales of Nicolaus, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was so dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Howe Mortuary, with Dr. Glenn D. Perica of Central Presbyterian Church officiating. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Howe Mortuary.

STRAND, Emma J.
April 8, 1926 - Sept. 22, 2004
Emma J. Strand, born April 8, 1926, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004. In 1931 Emma moved to Longmont. She started school here finishing the 12th grade. She married Walter A. Strand when she was 18 and he 21, in 1944. Their son was born July 20, 1945. In 1990, he passed away having heart arhythmias. The fire station was two blocks from the house.
Emma is survived by three brothers and two sisters, Leota Mae Koster of Longmont, Judi McCormick of Casper, Wyo., Dick Whisman of Longmont, Jack Whisman of Longmont and Jack Rowley of Wyoming; a grandson, Brian Strand of Prescott, Ariz.; and her husband Walter.
Emma and Walter celebrated their 60th anniversary in May. She will be greatly missed.
THOMPSON, Judith Rae
Nov. 27, 1940 - Sept. 25, 2004
Judith Rae Thompson of Erie died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, of cancer, in Louisville. She was 63.
She was born Nov. 27, 1940, in Norwood Colo., to Ray Chapman and Ila (Sharpe) McGann.
She married Paul Palmer in 1955. She later married John D. Crouse in 1961 in Denver.
She married Larry Thompson on April 16, 1968, in Colorado Springs.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents; and a stepfather, Bob McGann.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Thompson of Erie; two daughters Kacey MacLaughlin of Lyons and Cindy Hess of Longmont; three sons, Robert Palmer of Wasilla, Alaska, Doug Crouse of Denver, and Lance Thompson of Brighton; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Avalon Funeral Home, 1320 Centaur Village Drive, Lafayette. Interment will be at Foothills Memorial Gardens in Longmont.

TIERNEY, Thomas J. 'Tim'
June 27, 1940 - Sept. 26, 2004
Thomas J. 'Tim' Tierney of Longmont died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties Care Center in Louisville. He was 64.
He was born June 27, 1940, in Scranton, Pa., to Thomas W. and Catherine (Corrigan) Tierney. Mr. Tierney attended Pennsylvania State University and served four years with the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Tierney retired from IBM Federal Systems in 1995 after 29 years and from Lockheed Martin in 2000. He also spent a few years as a self-employed consultant.
He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, the Performance Management Association, Longmont Moose Lodge No. 548, Longmont Elks Lodge No. 1055, and the American Legion. He frequently lectured and conducted classes for the PMA, IBM and Lockheed Martin sites throughout the country.
A former pilot, his passions were his children, grandchildren, flying and golf.
Mr. Tierney was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Tierney, in 1999; and a sister, Mary Therese Tierney Chavious in 1998.
He is survived by two sons, Christopher Tierney and his wife Janice of Hot Springs, Va., and Paul Zahn of Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Diana Zahn-Storey and her husband John of Sherman Oaks, Calif., and Victoria Zahn of San Diego; a brother, William Tierney and his family of Sterling Heights, Mich.; three grandchildren, Caitlyn and Ryan Tierney and Tru Storey; two brothers-in-law, Greg Chavious and Charles Donen and their families; several relatives in the Carbondale, Pa., area; a girlfriend, Darlene Davis of Longmont; a former wife, Mary Tierney of Endicott, N.Y.; many dear friends around the country; and his dog, Riley.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. A reception will follow services at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Longmont Moose Lodge No. 1548, 2210 Pratt St. in Longmont. Cremation arrangements are being handled by Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

TOTH, Frances D.

Frances D. Toth of Niwot died Sept. 24, 2004, at her home. She was 88.
She was born Nov. 19, 1915, in Baja, Calif., to Gregorio and Rufina (Camacho) Dominguez. She married Alexander A. Toth in Las Vegas in 1951.
She was a homemaker and a supervisor in fruit packing. She moved to Niwot from Fresno, Calif., on July 30, 2002.
She was a member of Peoples Church in Fresno, working in the boutique and making items for sale to support the church. She also was a member of the Dorcas Christian Womens Group in California and attended Grave Evangelical Free Church and Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Longmont.
She will be remembered as a woman who was always helpful and active. She loved her family, gardening, volunteering at her church and making crafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964; and three brothers.
She is survived by two sons, Alexander A. Toth Jr. of San Diego and Michael A. Toth and his wife Christina of Longmont; a daughter, Estella Figueroa and her husband Francisco of Niwot; a sister, Mary Castro of Niwot; eight grandchildren, Gloria M. Timmons and her husband Daniel, Robert A. Figueroa and his wife Robyn, Frank E. Figueroa and his wife Kendra, Christina E. Toth, Michael A.B. Toth, Heather Jones, Shannon Fraiser Toth and Ryan Fraiser Toth; and six great-grandchildren, Anthony, Gregorio, Emilio, Sierra, Marissa and Gabriela.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tom Beaman of Grace Evangelical Free Church officiating. Funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Rocky Mountain Christian Church, 9447 Niwot Road, Niwot with Alan Ahlgrim of the church officiating. Interment will be at Foothills Gardens of Memory.

WILLE, John H.
June 28, 1926 - Sept. 25, 2004
John H. Wille of Berthoud died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, of liver disease. He was 78.
He was born June 28, 1926, in St. Paul, Minn., to Robert F. and Dorothea K. (Brenning) Wille.
Mr. Wille graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, with a bachelor of science degree. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 until 1949, as a sergeant with the 42nd Rainbow Division. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, European-African-Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal and two Bronze Star Medals.
He married June Villars on Aug. 22, 1947, in St. Paul. He moved from Minnesota to Colorado in 1953.
Mr. Wille was self-employed and the owner of a printing company before his retirement.
He was a former member of the Boy Scouts of America, a square dancing group, and a member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. He enjoyed camping and loved watching his grandchildren play.
Mr. Wille was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Barbara Jean Wille; a sister, Caroline Boshea; and a brother, Robert Wille Jr.
He is survived by a son, Allen Wille of Boulder; five daughters, Carol Dolan of Springfield, Diane Schans of Chandler, Ariz., Mary Lamirato of Berthoud, Jane Guenther of Louisville and Tina Brooks of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 15 grandchildren; and a brother, Warren Wille of Fort Collins.
Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, at Crist Mortuary Chapel, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, with the Revs. Paul Graff and Warren Wille officiating. Interment will follow the services, at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.

WINELAND, Esther, 96, of Natoma, Kan., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at her daughters home in Longmont.
YOUNG, Elvira Marie (Martin)

Elvira Marie (Martin) Young of Longmont died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in Longmont. She was 87.
She was born June 6, 1917, in North Bend, Neb., to Asa C. and Rose (Schimka) Martin.
Mrs. Young attended school until 11th grade in Sidney, Neb., and graduated from high school in Fremont, Neb., in 1935. She continued her education at Midland College, and played bassoon in the Midland College orchestra.
She married Sherman M. Young on Nov. 7, 1937, in Fremont.
Mrs. Young lived in Boulder from 1949 until 2000, when she moved to Longmont.
She was a homemaker, and enjoyed music, playing the organ, handicrafts, corresponding with friends, cooking for friends and family, and spending time with her grandsons and great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and a sister, Lillian (Martin) Romans.
Mrs. Young is survived by a daughter, Delores De De (Young) Crow of Longmont; three grandsons; three great-granddaughters; a niece; three nephews; cousins; and many friends.
Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Crist Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park after the service.

Rachel Lupe Estrada-Medina of Loveland died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at her home. She was 53.
She was born Feb. 10, 1951, in Littlefield, Texas, to Pedosiso Estrada and Antonia Valdez-Urias.
Ms. Estrada-Medina lived in Greeley until 1991 and in Longmont from 1991 to 2002. She moved to Loveland in 2002.
She was raised in the Catholic faith.
Ms. Estrada-Medina was a homemaker. She will be remembered for her love of her family and dedication in raising them.
She is survived by two sons, Gilbert Medina and Santos Medina Jr. and his wife Jill of Greeley; two daughters, Nancy Medina and her husband Rick Garza and Patricia Estrada-Medina and her husband Alfredo Perez, both of Loveland; a former husband, Santos Medina Sr. of Greeley; four brothers, Domingo Vasquez and Pedro Estrada, both of Brownfield, Texas, Benito Cardon of Greeley and Roy Urias of Utah; two sisters, Martina Moreno of Corpus Christi, Texas and Oralia Hernandez of Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Loveland, with the Rev. Joseph Hartmann officiating. Cremation has been completed.
