KAVEN, Shirley J.

Jan. 30, 1938 - Aug. 11, 2004

Shirley Jean Kaven of Johnstown, formerly of Longmont, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Longmont United Hospital. She was 66.

Shirley was born Jan. 30, 1938, to Stephen and Betty (Kovacs) Rakosi in Dearborn, Mich.

She graduated from Lincoln Park High School in January 1956. She married Jerome (Jerry) Kaven on Oct. 12, 1956, in Detroit.

Shirley was a leader in the Michigan Cub Scout program for her sons, Frank and Daniel. Jerome and Shirley relocated to Colorado in 1968.

Erling Lundell and Jerome started their own plastics company in 1972 and Shirley was their Girl Friday. Shirley was the financial controller for her husbands company, Accurate Plastics, until its sale in 1989.

Shirley became the 4-H leader for the Silver Spurs Horse program from 1975 to 1979. Her children, Susan and William, were involved in this program during this period.

Shortly after retirement, Shirley was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer. Her friends and acquaintances were amazed at her positive attitude. She sought alternative therapies as a rebuttal to traditional medicines diagnosis of six to 18 months to live. Shirley was one of the longest-surviving persons to have mesothelioma that we are aware of. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure.

Shirley started the K bar K Ranch in June of 1990. It was a breeding and training facility. During this period of her life she decided to enter competitive horse riding. Under the tutelage of her son and daughter-in-law, she became quite successful and achieved many championship titles and won many futurities, which were from Nebraska, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona and Texas.

In 1999, Shirleys horse A Classy Pine was the Reserve World Champion in the two-year-old western pleasure class.

Most people associated with Shirley had no idea she was suffering from a fatal disease. She always displayed a positive attitude and friendly smile. She hugged everyone.

We believe she was rewarded by her decisions. I know her family was. Shirley survived 14 years longer than her diagnosis indicated. Shirleys positive attitude was instrumental in making new friends. Her doctors were, I believe, impressed by her infectious warmth, whereby she made people feel at ease in treating her illness that they knew to be fatal. As time went on, she developed two more inoperable terminal diseases compounding their difficult task to help her cope with everything she faced.

As her life partner I was always impressed by her indefatigable desire to conquer her illness. Toward the end, it was difficult to watch her struggle against things that were always so easy for her to achieve. She never complained or doubted her creator. She was a positive force in many peoples lives, and was loved as she loved those around her. Shirley will be missed.

Shirley was our hero. We loved her till death did us part.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and one grandson, Alan Ray Perez.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Jerome Kaven of Johnstown; three sons, Frank Kaven and his wife Ann of Longmont, Dan Kaven and his wife Sherry of Longmont and Bill Kaven and his wife Tina of Gordonville, Texas; a daughter, Susan Stewart and her husband Tom of Johnstown; a sister, Betty Grube and her husband Jack of Sterling Heights, Mich.; and nine grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Jon, Alisa, Michael, Matthew, Alex, Curtis and Kaiya.

No visitation or services are scheduled.

Memorial contributions may be made to Boulder County 4-H in care of Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel.

Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements and cremation.
