Thomas Lloyd Jackson

Funeral services for Thomas Lloyd Jackson, a lifelong resident of Dove Creek, are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, at the First Baptist Church of Dove Creek beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Don Daniels will officiate. Interment will follow at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Thomas was born to Lawrence and Eulah (Briggs) Jackson on Oct. 2, 1914 in Paris, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home. He was 86 years old.

Thomas served his community as a rancher and farmer. He was married on July 2, 1939 to his bride, Overa Mary Ragsdale. To this union three children were born. Thomas loved the outdoors and especially loved to hunt. He also spent some time working for the Civilian Conservation Corp Camps in Mesa Verde during the Depression. Thomas was a former member of the Cortez Elks Lodge and a member of the Dove Creek First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Overa Mary Jackson, and by his children, Verdell Jackson and his wife, Linda of Kalispell, Mont., Gary L. Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., and Vera Deann Knuckles and her husband, Loyd of Dove Creek, Colo. His grandchildren, Bryan Jackson of Longmont, Colo., Scott Loyd Knuckles of Dove Creek, Colo., Shawn Dustin Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., April Marie DeZell of Calispell, Mont., Shelly Ann Purkat of Aztec, N.M., and four other great grandchildren survive Mr. Jackson. He is survived by extended family, Viola Martin of Dove Creek, Colo., Imogene Utley of Cortez, Colo., Hubert Jackson, of Salinas, Calif., Ira Lee Jackson of Weiser, Ida., Truman Jackson of Sparks, Nev., and George Jackson of Yuma, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Memorial contributions can be made with the Community Bank of Dove Creek.

Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Harold Bateman

Funeral services for former Cortez resident Harold Bateman, 78, of Chickasha, Okla., will be held Friday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Parkview Christian Church, with Rev. David Woods officiating.

Harold Bateman was born April 4, 1922 in Drumright, Okla., to Mark Bateman and Martha Humphreys. He passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 in Chickasha.

Harold grew up in Garber, Okla. He graduated from the high school there before going into the US Army for two years. He and Juanita Kilpatrick were married in 1945, in Seminole, Okla.

He started working in the Oklahoma oil fields in 1947. Later, in 1956, he was transferred to Cortez, where he continued to work for an additional 23 years. He returned to Chickasha in 1980, and retired in 1985.

Harold loved baseball, basketball, football and golf. He was a great youth baseball coach for about 15 years while in Cortez.

Harold is survived by his wife, Juanita; two daughters, Karen Sue Bateman of Denver and Janet Lee Rakowitz of San Antonio, Texas; sons Kerry Lynn Bateman of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Alan Neal Bateman of Grand Junction, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both parents, one brother and three sisters.

Internment will be in the Covington Cemetery in Covington, Okla. at 2 p.m. under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home (405-224-1344).

Nelma Finley

Services for Nelma Finley, who passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1 2000, will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. For further details, please call 565-3468.

Freelin Martin Portner

Freelin Martin Portner was born May 15, 1903, to William and Olga Lackmann Portner, in Deadwood, S.D., where his father was one of the early miners to work in the world-renowned Homestake Gold Mine. He passed away Oct. 27 in Durango, at the age of 97.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall, 2537 County Road 203, Durango. Steven Geiger will officiate.

He is survived by one son, four daughters and spouses, 22 grandchildren and two generations of great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Arline Portner, two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; one son-in-law; one grandson; one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.

Audra Emerald Hamilton

Funeral services for Audra Emerald Hamilton, a 39-year resident of Dolores, will be held on Wednesday, Nov.1, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Summit Ridge Cemetery.

Audra was born on May 10, 1911, in Cedar County, Mo., to Jasper and Nancy (Rose) Williams. She passed away on October 27, 2000, at the Mesa View Retirement Home in Cortez. She was 89.

Audra and her husband were dairy farmers and later farmed wheat and beans. For several years she worked in the nursery at the Methodist Church.

Audra is survived by her children, Margaret Brubeck and her husband, Arnold of Lamar, Colo., Zella McGettrick and her husband, Veryl of Springfield, Mo., and Maurice Hamilton of Cortez. She is also survived by six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her loving husband, Harold, one grandson, Gene Brubeck, and one sister.

Ruth O. Maichel

Funeral services for Ruth O. Maichel, 87, of Cortez and a longtime resident of Williams, Ariz., will be held Friday, Oct. 27, at the Canyon Chapel Foursquare Church in Williams beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the Williams Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Malone will officiate.

Ruth went into the arms of her Savior on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. She was born in Mulberry, Kan., on Dec. 21, 1912, to Joseph and Ida Matilda Greer. She married Glenn "Mike" Maichel on Oct. 4, 1929; they had two children, Robert Maichel and Joan Arriaga. They moved to Williams in 1945.

Ruth attended L.I.F.E. College in Los Angeles and was ordained as a minister of the Foursquare Gospel Church. She served the Lord in Northern Arizona planting churches, preaching, working with the Native Americans, and helping out wherever she was needed.

Those who knew "Sister Ruth" were blessed by her servant's heart and her passion for her Savior.

Ruth moved to Cortez in September 1999 and passed away here after suffering a stroke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her son and daughter; and two grandchildren. She is survived by four granddaughters, Sandi (Maichel) Teter of Poncha Springs, Colo., Cindy (Maichel) Slyter of Cortez, Wendi Maichel of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Shelley Manacso of Williams, Ariz.; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Robert "Bob" B. Williams

Bob Williams of Grand Junction (formerly of Norwood), passed away Oct. 21, 2000. He was 82. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Christian Church in Norwood at 2 p.m. Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to the Community Building for a luncheon.

Bob was born May 13, 1918, to Roger and Kate Williams. He was a decorated soldier who fought in eight major battles in World War II, and shot the Howitzer, the largest gun, in the war.

He married Lois Hogle on July 24, 1946. They had three children.

He was also a boxer and held the title of division champion in boxing. He was a retired rancher who loved his ranch in Shenandoah. Bob broke horses for his many friends and family members. He was one of the last "true" cowboys, and enjoyed the rodeo, where he was a top bronc rider in his younger years.

He was a friend to everyone he met. Many people in the area knew him as "Uncle Bob" or "Cowboy Bob."

He is survived by his daughter, Jo Anne of Farmington, N.M.; sons, Floyd of Grand Junction and Larry, of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; a sister, Birdie of Cortez; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, on Aug. 15, 1972, four brothers, four sisters and one grandchild.

Alma Duran

Former area resident Alma Duran passed away on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 a.m. Cremation is being arranged. She is survived by many family members in Cortez and the surrounding area, including her son, Dillard Duran.

Clarence Mirabel

A Mass of Christian burial for Clarence Mirabel of Cortez will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Father Joseph McGuinness will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Cortez Cemetery, with military rites performed by the American Legion Post No. 75. A dinner will follow at the church.

Mr. Mirabel was born July 30, 1919. He passed away on Oct. 20, 2000, at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, Beneranda, of Cortez; sons, Daniel (Dorothy); Tommy (Cecilia); Joseph (Verna); George and his girlfriend Sunshine Hargrave; daughters, Mary Ann (Donald) and Della Mirabel; two brothers; one sister; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Montezuma.

Hil Strofer

Graveside services for Hil Strofer are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor David Dahl of the Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate.

He passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was 84.

Thomas 'Tom' Wood

Thomas I. Wood passed away at his home in Cortez on Friday, Oct. 20,2000, at the age of 82. He was born in Salmon, Idaho, on Dec. 11, 1918, to John Albert and Helen (Laswell) Wood.

Tom earned a B.S. in pharmaceuticals from the Idaho State University. He married Helen L. Downey in Pocatello, Idaho, on April 11, 1938. They had three daughters.

They moved to Spokane, Wash., where Tom was employed as a pharmacist for over 40 years. He retired in 1982 and loved to travel with his wife. Helen passed away in 1990 in Spokane. He married Arene E. Kern in 1991. They resided in Idaho in the summer months and spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. In 1999 they moved to Cortez.

Tom is survived by his wife, Arene, of Cortez, daughters, Diane Middlebrook Dejarassi of San Francisco, Colleen Dae of Spokane, Michole Goldman of Los Altos, Calif., stepdaughter, Mary K. Hughes of Cortez, and stepson, James C. Kern of McAll, Ida. He is also survived by three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one step-grandchild, and two step-great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, and brother.

Interment services will be in Spokane, Wash.

Gloria P. Lopez

Funeral services for Gloria P. Lopez, a lifetime resident of Mancos, are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21, at the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

There will be a Rosary service and viewing on Friday, Oct. 20, at the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Father Kevin Novack will officiate.

Gloria was born to José and Mary (Ulibarri) Martinez on Feb. 4, 1945, in Civola, N.M. She passed away on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos at the age of 55.

Gloria suffered the loss of her husband, Victor Andrew Lopez, in July of this year. A large loving family survives her. Her mother, Mary C. Ulibarri of Bloomfield, N.M., survives. Also surviving are her children, Connie Paredes of Cortez, Carol Lopez of Cortez, Debra Brito of Summit Ridge, Johnny Lopez of Cortez, and Dolores Lopez of Summit Ridge.

She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her brothers, Tony Martinez of Bloomfield, N.M., Robert Ulibarri of Bloomfield, N.M., Gilbert Martinez of Denver, Roman Martinez of Bloomfield, N.M., and her sister Maria "Nina" Ballon of Bloomfield, N.M., survive her.

Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
