Eugene ‘Gene’ Cater
Eugene ‘Gene’ Cater, 74, of Cañon City, died Sept. 30, 2006, in Cañon City. He was born April 17, 1932, to Emer B. and Vera (Taylor) Cater in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Raised in Pueblo, Gene graduated from Pleasantview High School in 1951. In 1952, he moved to Colorado Springs and then to Cañon City in 1959. Working at the Dept. of Corrections, he also started the Cater Trash Service and retired from both in the early 1990s. An avid animal lover, he also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing and spending time with his friends.
He is survived by his children Gena (Jake) Mouriquand of Cañon City, Nanette (Doug) Even of Colorado Springs, Vickie (Mike) Butts of Cañon City and Diana Golboker of Spearfish, S.D.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Maurine Charleston and Wilma Kreger and numerous nieces and neph-ews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold and son, Wesley.
Family and friends will gather for a Life Celebration at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at 217 Ridgmar Square, Cañon City. Please omit flowers. Contributions may be made to the Fremont County Humane Shelter, 110 S. Rhoades Ave., Cañon City, CO 81212.

Virgil Lynn “Butch” Jr Beavers
Virgil Lynn “Butch” Jr Beavers died peacefully at his home. He was born May 9 1947, in Florence to Virgil and Mary Beavers.
He served in the Vietnam War from 1968-1969 as a Sea Bee with the U.S. Navy. He was a true patriot and loved his country. At an early age, he began his career as a heavy equipment operator working along side with his father in the family business. Butch was involved with many projects in the area, often volunteering his time and experience to local efforts. As a lifelong resident of Florence, he made countless friends in the area and was always quick to lend a hand. Butch was also eager to share his home and love with a dog in need, taking in many faithful companions over the years. He was a loving father and cared deeply for his family and friends. His loyalty, wit, intelligence, and kindheartedness will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his mother, Mary (Orton) Beavers; sisters, Carolyn (Bob) Cooper and Phyllis (Bill) Loeber; sons; Virgil Beavers III and Mathew Schuckmann; daughter, Bobbie Beavers, Yvette Beavers, and Mary (Doug) Olson; granddaughter, Alexandria Beavers; former wives, Colleen Beavers and Sue Cooper. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Beavers Sr. and former wife, Kathleen (Nelson) Conliffe.
A Celebration of His Life will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14 at Pioneer Park in Florence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local animal shelter.
Services are under the direction of Charles Anthony Funeral Home in Florence.
Waneta Mae Quimby
Waneta Mae Quimby, 84, died at her home in Florence, on Oct. 5, 2006. She was born on Feb. 14, 1922, in South Bend, Ind., to Cecil and Lola Kimmel.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold Hoyt Quimby; daughter, Gloria Dawn (Jack) Yeazel of Laguna Vista, Texas; son, Verne (Marge) Quimby of Sedalia; four grandsons, Brian Fuqua of Nsew York, N.Y., Todd Quimby and Troy Quimby of Littleton, and Gregory Fuqua of Park City, Utah; and brother, Richard Kimmel of South Bend, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ida Wurtsbaugh and brother, Raymond Kimmel.
Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Bridge To Life Assembly of God Church, 222 N. Orchard Ave. in Cañon City, with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Larry Kettle officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, in Olinger Highland Cemetery in Northglenn, 104th and I-25. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sangre de Cristo Hospice, 1439 Main St., Cañon City, CO 81212 in memory of Waneta Quimby.

Harold E. Brooks
Harold E. Brooks, 82, of Cañon City, died Oct. 8, 2006, in Cañon City. He was born Aug. 23, 1924, in Benton, Kan., to Nate and Ethel Mae (Throckmorton) Brooks. He married Evelyn Ruff.
He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He moved to Cañon City from Logan, Kan. While in Kansas, he was a volunteer fireman for 20 years and worked in the oil fields of western Kansas as a pumper.
He is survived by children, Rosiland Brooks, Rhonda Brooks, Regina (Ron) Wilson and Harold L. Brooks; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and sister Nina McHatton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three sisters and three brothers.
Cremation was through Wilson Crematory with burial at a later date in Kansas.
Arrangements were handled through Wilson Funeral Home.
Robert Lee Gifford
On Oct. 6, 2006, shortly before dawn, Wanda E. Gifford rejoiced with great joy for the arrival of her beloved husband “Bob” into heaven.
Robert Lee Gifford was born on June 19, 1925, to Godfrey N. and Ethel Gifford in Haskel County, Kansas. Bob and his family moved to Florence in 1937, where they resided in Rainbow Park. Bob attended Florence schools. He was a veteran of World War II having enlisted into the Army/Air Corps on Sept. 11, 1943, and served as an “airplane and engine mechanic” in the 362nd Fighter Group. During his time in the Army/Air Corp, he worked on a multitude of aircraft including the B-29 and the P-51. He was honorably discharged from the military on March 18, 1946.
On Sept. 4, 1948, Bob married Wanda Elaine Ham in Raton, N.M. After a short time in Utah, Bob and Wanda moved to Coal Creek, where they raised their four children and both lived until each of them passed on.
Bob worked the construction trades as a drywall and painting contractor, a correctional officer with the Colorado Department of Corrections, and finished his working career as a Union Millwright with the Carpenters’ and Millwrights’ Local Union No. 2834. He also served as board member for the Town of Coal Creek and was a volunteer fireman.
During his life, Bob became an accomplished artist in oil painting, watercolors and sculpturing. He was a nationally and internationally published poet. Bob loved music and played several instruments. He also restored musical instruments as a hobby.
At every opportunity he would tell of his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, what a difference his Lord had made in his life, and why you needed to know Him too. His greatest desire would be that anyone reading this would make their way to the knowledge of the saving grace of Jesus. He was a steadfast student of the Bible, and a soldier for Christ. Two of his favorite Bible Scriptures are Jeremiah 29:11 and Philippians 4:13.
He is survived by his four children Elaine (Bill) Perdue of Florence, Retta Springer of Yuma, Ariz., Fred (Jane) Gifford of Cañon City and Rhonda (Bill) Corkran of Vail, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Surviving also are his “adopted” children, Bud Waitman of Moreland, Idaho, Bob Waitman of Nampa, Idaho, Don Waitman or Phoenix, Ariz., Sue Graves of Granite Canyon, Wyo., and Julie Schroder of Hotchkiss. Numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews survive as well.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sister, and his wife of more than 49 years, Wanda.
He will be missed, but our reunion with him and the King of Glory is greatly anticipated. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Diabetes Foundation, 777 Grant St., Denver CO 80203.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2006, at the Florence Church of the Nazarene. Inurnment will follow at 2 p.m. at Union Highland Cemetery in Florence.
Mary Eileen (Wood) Spencer
Mary Eileen (Wood) Spencer born May 29, 1915, to Horace Olin “H.O.” and Mary Elizabeth (Kilderry) Wood in Kansas City, Kan., entered into eternal life Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, in Cañon City.
Following her mother’s death when she was 7 years old, Eileen lived with various family members until her father’s marriage to Anna G. Guinn, a loving step-mother who raised Eileen as her own daughter. Their home was in Mexico, Mo., where Eileen graduated from high school and met her husband of 63 years, F. Vernon Spencer. They were married Sept. 15, 1935 in Columbia, Mo. Eileen and Vernon lived and raised their two sons in Mexico and Fulton, Mo., before retiring to Cañon City in 1974. Their love for Colorado was well-known.
Eileen’s Christian faith was very important to her, and she was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in both Fulton and Cañon City, where she taught Sunday School classes, led Bible studies, and served and held offices in numerous organizations. She was also a Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and a long-time member of the TOPS. She enjoyed volunteering in community organiza-tions, traveling with family and friends, and tending to her cats and dog. She was an avid reader and a collector of angel memorabilia.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Patty of Dallas, Texas, and their son Todd; by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Mary of St. Charles, Mo.; and theirs sons, Frank and Jeff, and by numerous great-grandchildren.
Eileen was preceded in death by her mother, father, step-mother Anna, second step-mother Reva (Lint) Wood, two infant granddaughters and, in 1998, by her husband Vernon.
Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Holt Family Funeral Home. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Bill Carson, will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, in Cañon City at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the many cherished friends and health-care professionals who cared for and ministered to Eileen during her latter years, with special gratitude to the staff of Sangre de Cristo Hospice West.

Addie Loree Allison
Addie Loree Allison, 89, of Cañon City, died Oct. 8, 2006, in Cañon City. She was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Sherwin Junction, Kan., to Charles and Georgia (Phillips) Shutt. She married Ralph Allison on June 22, 1937, in Fredonia, Kan.
She was a school bus driver and homemaker. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Cañon City. She was also a member of the Needle and Eye Quilt Club and the Royal Gorge Quilt Council.
She is survived by three children, Larry (Marilyn) Allison, Bruce (Georgia Lawson) Allison and Patsy (George) Earhart; eight grandchildren, Debra (Matt) Dorman, Linda (William) Jensen, Mike (Jodi) Allison, Rachelle (David) Evans, Crystal Allison, Kim (Vince) Coleman, Lisa Dirkes, and Mike (Janet) Bair; 16 great-grandchildren, Justin, Jeffrey, Brittany, Zachary, Brandi, Megan, Ashley, Billy, Jarryd, Nicholas, Devin, Jarred, Jacob, Joshua, Christopher and Alaina.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, one sister and one grandchild, Gary Allison.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Holt Chapel of the Garden with Pastor Morgan Kerr officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Cañon City.

Betty J. Hamilton
April 22, 1929 - Oct. 22, 2006
Betty J. Hamilton, 77, of Cañon City, died Oct. 22, 2006. She was born April 22, 1929, in Grandview, Idaho, to Emmit and Erma Towner.
Mrs. Hamilton was a lifelong resident of Cañon City. Betty attended the Evangelical Free Church. Betty enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking for family and fishing with her grandchildren. Betty married the late William Hamilton, June 17, 1950, in Raton, N.M.
She is survived by children, Debbie (Rick) Harmsen, Bruce (Patti) Hamilton, Karen (Mike) Valdez, Robert (Barbara) Skinner, and Steve (Dottie) Hamilton. Grandchildren, Nikki Harmsen, Ethan and Marissa Hamilton, Michael (Jenna) Spitzer, Jason (Jackie) Spitzer, Matt (Tiffany) Valdez, Cassandra Valdez, Melonie and Christopher Skinner, Brittany and Brianna Hopkins, Kandice and Megan Hamilton. Great-grandchildren, Gavin, Summer, Mia, Nicole, Amber, Jordan, Seth, and Kayley. Numerous other family members and loved ones.
Betty was preceded in death by a daughter Sandy and both her parents.
At her request, there was no service. Private family inurnment was held.
Harry Stamper
Aug. 9, 1924 - Oct. 20, 2006
Harry Stamper, 82, died Oct. 20, 2006, in Florence. He was born on Aug. 9, 1924, in Diagonal, Iowa, to Harry A. and Blanche (Clemons) Stamper.
He married Corrine Watson April 6, 1947, in Indianola, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945.
He is survived by his children, Shirley Marecak, Nancy Kirtley, Michael Stamper, Amy Sylvain, William Stamper, Laura Stamper and Beth Ann Stamper-Hass; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen, Betty and Marietta, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Corrine on May 15, 2005. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. prior to funeral services at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Cañon City, with the Rev. Jack Crosby officiating. Burial will follow in the Howard Cemetery in Howard. Memorial donations may be made in his name, to Bruce McCandless Colorado State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 903 Moore Drive, Florence, CO 81226.

Glenn Curtis
Glenn Curtis died Oct. 24, 2006, in Newberg, Ore. He was born July 27, 1916, in Woodstock, Ill., to B.H. and Emily Curtis.
He served in the Army Air Corp as a B-17 pilot over Germany in World War II. He married Catherine “Kay” Gould on March 7, 1942, and they were married for 42 years. They worked as White Stag clothing representatives at the Denver Merchandise Mart for many years and retired in 1977. The couple retired in Cañon City.
He is survived by his daughters, Carole Hite of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Colette Good of Amarillo, Texas; sons, Richard Curtis of Dalyan, Turkey, James Curtis of Newberg, Ore. and Ken Curtis of Dalyan, Turkey; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife.

Dorothy L. Bunting
Dorothy L. Bunting, 101, died April 17, 2007. in Pueblo. She was born Aug. 11, 1905, in Staten Island, N.Y., to Joseph and Harriett (Galloway) Fabregas. She married Archibald Bunting in 1935 in Staten Island. She was a member of the Beacon Light Order of the Eastern Star in Staten Island and Bastrop, La., the Daughters of America in Staten Island and the United Methodist Church in Staten Island, Bastrop and in Florence.
She is survived by one daughter, Anita L. Bishop of Cañon City; three grandchildren, Andrea (John) Mauriello of Cañon City, Coral E. (Henry) Burnett of Bastrop, La., and Marilyn E. (Roger) Kelly of Carbondale; and six great-grandchildren, Pfc. William Mauriello, Scott Burnett, Lisa Burnett, Robert Burnett, Jennifer Wixon and Kristal Walters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister, Marjorie E. Fabregas.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Florence with Pastor Lora Payne officiating. Inurnment services will be at a later date in Staten Island.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Florence, 1032 E. Main, Florence, CO 81226, or the United Methodist Church in Bastrop, La., 222 S. Washington St., Bastrop, LA 71220.

Lucy Trinidad Esquibel
Lucy Trinidad Esquibel, age 91, passed away April 21, 2007, in Cañon City surrounded by her family. Born May 28, 1915, in Portland, Lucy was the youngest daughter of Angelina (Morales) and Sotero Rodriguez. Lucy grew up in Fremont County, was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. As a life-long member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed ministering God’s word to others, spending time with her family and loved to cook.
Lucy left this life as she lived it, with integrity, dignity and faith. She will be remembered for her genuine affection, caring nature, constant generosity and ever-present sense of humor. She was a role model and an inspiration to all those who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Raymond Esquibel and Manuel (Beverly) Esquibel; her grandchildren, Lucy (Rodger) Wright, Renee (Paul) Martinez, Raymond Esquibel Jr., Jane (Trace) Hall, Anthony (Reida) Esquibel, Tony (Mercy) Garcia and Theresa (Timothy) Rodecape; 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel; parents, brother and three sisters.
Rosary Recitation will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2007. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007. Both services will be at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 622 W. Second, Florence, Colo. Internment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Cañon City.
Betty Louise Hodges
Betty Louise Hodges, 73, of Cañon City died Tuesday, April 24, 2007. She was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Florence, to Jim and Maude E. (Knisley) Dighera. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a son, Rickey Dean (Helen) Hanson of Cañon City; daughters, Sandra Kay (Michael) Wallgren of Cañon City and Beverley Jean Bland of Cañon City; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; significant other, Delbert R. Hodges of Cañon City, and numerous cousins.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. April 26, 2007, at the Beaver Park Cemetery in Penrose.
Wilson Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
Joyce Elenor Mary Donley
Joyce Elenor Mary Donley, 84, of Cañon City, died April 24, 2007. She was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Swindon, Wilkshire, England, to Aurthur Charles and Alice (Sims) Scriven.
She is survived by a brother, Aurthur (Bonnie) Scriven; children, Cathryn Bowman, Clayton Donley, Cynthia Donley and Charles Donley; grandchildren, Josh Donley, Michael (Sandra) Bowman, Angela (Gary) Ormand, Sherri Haynie, William Alen Bowman II, Hanna and Kristy Walker, Kelli Donley, Heather Donley, Charles (Amy) Donley II and Alicia Donley; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oliver Donley; a son, Carvel Donley; sisters, Barbara Covell and Gillian Green.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2007, at the Charles Anthony Funeral Home in Florence with the Rev. Chuck Kinyon officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Cañon City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Diabetes Association.
