Linda Mary Anderson (6/21/2007)
Durango resident Linda Mary Anderson died of cancer at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Thursday, June 14, 2007. She was 60.
Mrs. Anderson was born to Martin and Artheda Foltz in Glendale, Calif., on Jan. 13, 1947.
She graduated from Baldwin Park High School in California in 1965. In 1970, Mrs. Anderson earned a bachelor's degree in art from California State University at Los Angeles. In 1978, she obtained her secondary-teaching credential, also from Cal State.
After her divorce from Michael Anderson, she moved to Durango in 1980 after visiting her sister Loretta Foltz and falling in love with the area, her family said.
They said she was a gifted artist and teacher. Mrs. Anderson worked primarily as a substitute teacher in area schools for many years. She also worked at K-Bob's Restaurant, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Strater Hotel.
"She was a loving, caring and compassionate person, dearly loved by all," her family wrote.
Mrs. Anderson is survived by her sisters Loretta Foltz of Durango and Lois Waddle of Los Alamitos, Calif.; and brother Martin Foltz Jr. of Los Alamitos.

Joan Dunn (6/20/2007)
Longtime area resident Joan Dunn died at her daughter's home in Durango on Saturday, June 16, 2007. She was 79.
Mrs. Dunn was born to Frank and Oneta Gorman in Fremont, Neb., on March 5, 1928. She graduated from Central High School in Omaha, Neb.
Her brother, Russ, introduced her to his Army buddy, William Frank Dunn. A courtship ensued, and when Mrs. Dunn came to visit, the couple eloped to Aztec on May 23, 1947.
They ranched with Mr. Dunn's parents, who had pioneered in the area, until 1969. While raising four children on the ranch, Mrs. Dunn commuted to Durango to work for Gibson's/Grant's Department Stores (located where Kroeger's Ace Hardware is now) before going to work for Montrose Production Credit, then Dr. Bautts for seven years. The Dunns purchased the El Rancho Bar, which had once belonged to Mr. Dunn's parents in the late 1960s. They owned and operated it for about 10 years until they sold it in 1979.
Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Dunn; daughter Pat Simon; and grandson Justin Simon.
She is survived by her daughters Debra Matthew of Durango and Connie Baker of Bayfield; son Bill Scott Dunn of Chandler, Ariz.; brother Dr. Russ "Beezie to her" Gorman of Corvallis, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, followed by a funeral at 2 p.m., also at Hood. The Rev. Myron T. Darmour and Chaplain Earl Caudill will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery.

Jo Ann Mockoski (6/20/2007)
Former Durango resident Jo Ann Mockoski died of esophageal cancer at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Thursday, June 14, 2007. She was 65.
Mrs. Mockoski was born to Robert and Alice Sawyer in Denver on Oct. 12, 1941.
She grew up in Kansas and Durango, and graduated from Durango High School. Her family said she thoroughly enjoyed her time in Colorado. In her youth, she was involved in rodeo and was crowned the Spanish Trails Fiesta Queen in 1959.
Mrs. Mockoski attended Adams State College in Alamosa. She was a resident of Delta for 30 years. While in Delta, she worked as a pharmacist's assistant at Gibson's pharmacy.
She met her first husband, Dwain Stefan, during her teen years.
She married her second husband, John Mockoski in Oregon in 1992.
Her family said that she had moved in with her daughter three months ago because of failing health.
Throughout Mrs. Mockoski's life, she had a passion for horses, her family said.
Mrs. Mockoski was preceded in death by her husband, John Mockoski, in 1998.
She is survived by her mother, Alice Sawyer, of Delta; daughters Celeste Caywood of Cortez and Heather White of Moab, Utah; son Tim Mockoski of Olathe; brother Robert Sawyer of Cortez; former husband Dwain Stefan of Delta; two granddaughters; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2007, at Greenmount Cemetery.
Joe Billie Olguin (6/20/2007)
Ignacio resident Joe Billie Olguin died at Mercy Regional Medical Center of injuries he suffered in a truck accident north of Ignacio on Thursday, June 14, 2007. He was 70.
Mr. Olguin was born to Juan and Lupita Olguin in Tiffany on May 21, 1937. He was raised there and graduated from Ignacio High School.
Mr. Olguin worked for the University of Colorado in Boulder and the Southern Ute Tribe.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors.
Mr. Olguin was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Olguin.
He is survived by his sons Ronald Olguin and Anthony Gunn, both of Ignacio; daughters Sandra Olguin, Edwina Watts, Lorna Olguin and Marilyn Olguin, all of Ignacio; former wife Garnet Cuthair Olguin of Ignacio; brothers Orris Olguin and John Olguin, both of Ignacio, J.R. Olguin of Tiffany and Ross Olguin of Packwood, Wash.; sister Fern Martinez of Bayfield; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be recited at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio beginning at 6 p.m. today, June 20, 2007. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2007, also at St. Ignatius. Deacon Larry Tucker will officiate. Burial will occur at Tiffany Cemetery.
Marjorie Bauchop Karn (6/19/2007)
Longtime Cortez resident Marjorie Bauchop Karn died of congestive heart failure at her home on Friday, June 15, 2007. She was 85.
Mrs. Karn was born to James Staton and Alice (Shepherd) Bauchop in Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada, on May 27, 1922. Her parents had emigrated from Falkirk, Scotland, to Canada and then on to Parker, Ariz., where her father was an engineer on the Parker Dam on the Colorado River. The Bauchop family moved to Long Beach, Calif., when Mrs. Karn was a senior in high school, and she graduated there.
On Jan. 25, 1942, she married Hubert Karn in Long Beach.
Mr. Karn served with the Coast Guard during World War II, and the Karns lived in California during and after the war. In 1949, they moved to Cortez.
Her family said she was a devoted mother and dedicated homemaker. Mrs. Karn enjoyed reading and latchhooking. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile.
Mrs. Karn was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Hubert Karn, and her daughter Pamela Groenwald.
She is survived by her sons Hubert W. "Buster" Karn of Durango, Greg Karn of Cortez and Richard Karn of Hot Springs, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Cortez. The Rev. Erika Meyer will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Barnabas Columbarium Fund, 110 W. North St., Cortez, CO 81321.
Sheila Philips (6/19/2007)
Durango resident Sheila Philips died at her home on Sunday, June 17, 2007. She was 61. The cause of death is undetermined.
Mrs. Philips was born to Albert and Ann Smith in San Jose, Calif., on May 6, 1946.
She graduated from St. John Viannie High School in San Jose in the mid-1960s.
In 1976, she married Henry Philips in Silver Spring, Md.
Mrs. Philips graduated from Fort Lewis College with a bachelor's degree in education. She went on to earn her master's degree from Adams State College in Alamosa.
After graduating, Mrs. Philips was a student teacher at St. Columba School. She was a substitute teacher at numerous schools in Durango.
Mrs. Philips also worked as a counselor in the field of drug and alcohol abuse.
Her family said she enjoyed beading and spending time with friends. Mrs. Philips was also active in Cornerstone Church of Durango.
"She gave words of wisdom, love and support to everyone she encountered," her family wrote.
Mrs. Philips is survived by her son Ian Philips of Durango; daughter Annie Philips of Durango; and brothers Albert Smith of Visalia, Calif., and Jerry Smith of Saratoga, Calif.
A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at 118 Rosemary Lane, the first right turn past the Durango Tech Center on U.S. Highway 160. (Call Ann at 259-0767 if lost.) A potluck lunch will be held after the service.
Arthur Marion Searcy (6/19/2007)
Longtime Cahone resident Arthur Marion Searcy died at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Friday, June 15, 2007. He was 97.
Mr. Searcy was born to Steven Edward and Burnie (Butler) Searcy in Calhoun, a town near Colorado Springs that no longer exists, on Jan. 7, 1910.
He moved a lot as a child and completed school through the sixth grade. As a young man, he liked to box and had a friend who was his sparring partner for years.
On Dec. 30, 1944, he married Doris T. "Dolly" Turner in Wichita, Kan.
Mr. Searcy enjoyed farming, primarily growing pinto beans. He also cultivated wheat for 53 years. He told his family that farming was what he always wanted to do.
Mr. Searcy enjoyed trading and working on guns. He was also known to buy and sell cars, motorcycles, knives and watches.
He enjoyed playing the fiddle and the harmonica.
Mr. Searcy was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dolly Searcy; daughter Virginia Lee; and son Charles Searcy.
He is survived by his daughters Eileen Markheim of Ignacio, Mary Ladner of Denver, Nila Padilla of Aurora, Edna McLain of Winchester, Calif., and Doris Leach of Murrieta, Calif.; sons A. Wayne Searcy of Cahone and George Searcy of Indian Hills; sister Esther "Bessie" Smart of Cortez; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at Ertel Memorial Chapel, 42 N. Market St. in Cortez.
Burial will follow at Cahone Cemetery.

Phyllis Moses (6/17/2007)
Part-time Durango resident Phyllis Moses died in Dallas on Wednesday, June 13, 2007. She was 83.
Mrs. Moses was born in Omaha, Neb., but grew up in Oklahoma City.
She graduated from the high school department of Gulfpark College in Mississippi and then attended Chevy Chase Junior College in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Moses earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. After graduation, she taught elementary school.
She married Hobart Moses, and the young couple moved to Dallas, where they started a family and a new business.
Mr. Moses enjoyed entertaining her friends and family both in Dallas and at her home in the Durango area where she had spent a significant part of each year for many years. She was an avid bridge player, and her family said she was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting pieces for friends and family members.
During her 60 years in Dallas, she taught Sunday school and was a member of the St. Anne's Altar Guild at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was an active member of The Dallas Woman's Club, The Dallas Garden Club, the Suburban Book Club and Penny Ante Investment Club, among others.
Mrs. Moses was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Hobart Moses; and her daughters Julia Ann Moses and Nancy Katherine Moses.
She is survived by her son, Whitney Moses; daughter Kimberly Moses Jackson; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday, June 15, 2007, at Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church.
