Theodore Roosevelt Hunkins (6/27/2007)
A memorial service for Theodore Roosevelt Hunkins, who died on Dec. 18, 2006, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Greenmount Cemetery. Mr. Hunkins' ashes will be buried with his wife's.
There will be a Masonic Memorial Ceremony, bagpipe music by Gerry Crawford, horns by his great-grandsons Bradley Sherwood and Christian Grossklaus and a violin solo by great-grandson Benjamin Grossklaus.
Philip Wayne Bell (6/27/2007)
Durango resident Philip Wayne Bell died at his home on Sunday June 24, 2007. He was 56. Mr. Bell was born to James and Betty (Jenkins) Bell in Orange County, Calif., on Oct. 28, 1950. He moved to the Durango area in 1959, and graduated from Durango High School in 1969.
Mr. Bell was a drywall installer and had lived in the Animas Valley. He enjoyed music and spending time with his friends.
Mr. Bell is survived by his son, Travis Bell, of Sedalia, Mo.; daughter Julie Aber of Columbia, Mo.; brothers Bob Bell of LaCygne, Kan., Jack Bell of Basehor, Kan., and Ken Bell of Colorado Springs; one granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation will occur. Private services will be held at a later date.
Frances Jessie Love Williamson (6/24/2007)
Former Durango resident Frances Jessie Love Williamson died in Grand Junction on May 23, 2007. She was 84.
Known as "Sas," she was born in Denver to Charles "Pop" and Maria Love on Feb. 23, 1923.
Mrs. Williamson graduated from Denver North High School as valedictorian. She earned her bachelor's degree in home economics and chemistry from the University of Denver. Mrs. Williamson was honored as the queen of the Denver chapter of Job's Daughters.
In 1946, she married Hugh Williamson. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends last summer.
The Williamsons spent most of their lives in Denver, Durango and Tucson, Ariz. They lived in Durango from 1960 to the early 1980s.
In addition to raising a family, Mrs. Williamson excelled at breeding, training and showing German shepherds. She opened Rio Valle Kennels on Florida Road in 1963. Her kennel produced seven champions, including a dog named Nestle's Crunch, which was one of two grand victors in the history of the breed to produce two grand victors.
Mrs. Williamson was a 4-H dog-obedience leader for many years and one of the founding members of the Four Corners Kennel Club, now known as the Durango Kennel Club. She owned and operated Paws and Claws, a boarding kennel and grooming business.
"Frances was a beautiful woman with vitality for life," her family wrote. "She dabbled in painting, pottery, sewing and gourmet cooking. She had a mind for business and volunteered service to the community."
Mrs. Williamson is survived by her husband, Hugh Williamson of Grand Junction; sons Kent Williamson of Cortez and Ned Williamson of Hailey, Idaho; daughters Wendy Williamson of Durango, Joan Graham of Grand Junction and Laurie Williamson of Lenoir, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time.
Trena Sue Floyd-Herrick (6/24/2007)
Durango resident Trena Sue Floyd-Herrick, 43, died at her home on Saturday, June 16, 2007. The cause of death is undetermined.
Mrs. Floyd-Herrick was born to F. James and Tamara Fletcher in Columbus, Ohio, on Aug. 12, 1963. She grew up in the Columbus area and graduated from Whitehall Yearling High School in Whitehall, Ohio, in 1981.
She and her son moved to Durango in 1992 and she worked for the next 10 years at Mercy Medical Center in medical records and billing.
Mrs. Floyd-Herrick married David Herrick in Durango. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Her family said she took genuine interest and much time supporting the hobbies and activities of her children and family. She also enjoyed the mountains of Southwest Colorado and spending time camping and touring the area.
She was an avid reader.
"She was a loving mother to her grandchildren," her daughter-in-law Nicole Pearson said. "She was always joking around with me and liked to be the goofy one with me."
Mrs. Floyd-Herrick is survived by her mother, Tamara Fletcher of Columbus, Ohio; sons Jeremiah Floyd and Don Herrick, both of Durango; sister Tammy Jessup of Durango; brother Joseph Fletcher of Columbus; two grandchildren; and great-grandmother Audrey Snedecor of Columbus.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at First Southern Baptist Church, 1715 West Second Ave. The Rev. Jimmy Kennedy will officiate.

Gladys Hannan (6/24/2007)
Durango resident Gladys Hannan died at her daughter and son-in-law's home on Thursday, June 21, 2007. She was 94.
She was born to Karl and Edna Hanson in Herman, Neb., on April 28, 1913. The family moved to Powell, Wyo., to homestead when she was a toddler. She completed her education in Blair, Neb., as the vice president of her high school class.
Mrs. Hannan met her husband while on vacation in San Diego. Her family said she already knew and liked his mother, so she concluded he'd be a good catch. On Nov. 19, 1941, she married Jim Hannan in Oakland, Calif. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage.
The Hannans lived a happy and active social life in Pleasant Hill, Calif., for many decades. They were active in Christ the King Catholic Church.
Mrs. Hannan moved to Durango from San Diego in 2005 after the death of her husband.
During her life in La Plata County, she enjoyed the family pets, beautiful scenery and the birds and deer that came right to the windows to delight her. She liked the towns of Bayfield and Durango and the rides around the beautiful countryside.
Mrs. Hannan is survived by her daughter, Mary Curtis of Durango; son, Dr. James Hannan Jr. of San Diego; sister Ila Binderup of Bellingham, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Graveside services will be held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at a later date.

W.T. Scott (6/23/2007)
Durango resident W.T. Scott died of heart failure at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. He was 86.
Known as "Scotty," he was born to O. Franklin and Rebecca Evaline Hightower Scott in Kalgary, Texas, on June 10, 1921.
Mr. Scott served in the Navy during World War II. He was stationed aboard the USS Utah at Pearl Harbor. The ship was always tied up in Fox 12 behind the USS Lexington, an aircraft carrier that was at sea Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked.
Mr. Scott's eyewitness account of the bombing is online at www.ussutah.org/scott_wt_ewreport.htm. His personal account is also of record at the Nimitz Museum, National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredricksburg, Texas.
His family said that Mr. Scott was extremely proud to have served his country and honored those who defend its shores today. After his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Scott returned to the Texas Panhandle, where he owned and operated a small convenience store, farmed and ranched within a few miles of his birthplace.
On March 3, 1965, he married Mildred Witt in Lubbock, Texas.
In 1986, Mr. Scott retired to Durango with his wife.
He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors and USS Utah Association.
Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his son, Robert F. Bertram Scott Jr.; and grandson Deven Shaline.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred J. Scott of Durango; daughter Karen Young of Durango; brother Wade Scott of Lubbock, Texas; sister Elene Steele of Dallas; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Durango, 332 E. 11th St. The Rev. Jeff Dobesh will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery.
Joshua Aloysius Helmericks (6/23/2007)
Durango native Joshua Aloysius Helmericks died in a truck-rollover accident on Junction Creek Road on Thursday, June 21, 2007. He was 19.
Mr. Helmericks was born in Durango to Jim and Sharon Helmericks on July 3, 1987.
He attended Park Elementary Sch-ool and Escalante Middle School before graduating from Durango High School in 2005. In high school, he excelled in wrestling, welding and mechanics, but did well in all other subjects, his family said.
They said Mr. Helmericks was a skilled mechanic, welder, equipment operator and engineer who helped design and build several pieces of heavy mining equipment at the Durango Gravel Pit, his family's mining business. His dog, Scudder, was a familiar sight in the back of his pickup.
"He was skilled way beyond his years," his family said.
Mr. Helmericks was building a "rock crawler" that he wanted to finish by the Fourth of July. His family is planning to finish the project in his memory.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trucks, guns and helping his friends and brothers to achieve their goals.
"He was always on a mission," said his mother, Sharon Helmericks. "Josh worked tirelessly on every project he ever started and finished them all. Josh was a very kind and sweet son who never forgot his Mom and other family members."
Mr. Helmericks is survived by his parents, Jim and Sharon Helmericks of Durango; brothers Jimmy Helmericks, Joey Helmericks, Jeb Helmericks and James Siegfried, all of Durango; and grandparents C.J. Helmericks of Prescott, Ariz., and E.M. Helmericks, Madeline Surdey and Al Surdey, all of Durango.
A celebration of his life will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2007, at the Durango Gravel Shop, 995 Colorado Highway 3. (Call 259-3995 for more information.) No other services are planned, and all of Mr. Helmericks' friends are asked to come.
Minerva A. Wilson (6/21/2007)
Former Durango resident Minerva A. Wilson died in Durango on Thursday, June 14, 2007. She was 90.
Mrs. Wilson was born to John M. and Edna Adams in Whitesburg, Ky., on Feb. 4, 1917. She graduated from Whitesburg High School and earned a teaching certificate from Pikeville College in Kentucky. She taught at the elementary school level.
On Aug. 26, 1950, she married Hayden Wilson. They lived in Milestone, Ky., where she continued to teach.
In 1960, the Wilsons moved to Ohio, where Mrs. Wilson graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Ohio State University. She taught at Groveport Madison Elementary School in Groveport, Ohio, until she retired in 1977.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson retired to Sparta, Tenn., where they lived by a small lake outside of town. Mrs. Wilson enjoyed fishing, bird watching, walking and reading. The Wilsons were members of the First United Methodist Church, where they made many friends, their son Thurman Wilson said.
Mrs. Wilson moved to Durango in 1995 to be closer to her family. She joined the First Presbyterian Church.
She spent the last three years living at the Bridge, an assisted-living facility in Farmington.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, Hayden Wilson, in 1987.
She is survived by her son, Thurman Wilson, of Durango; brother David Adams of Freeport, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 21, 2007, at the Bridge, 1091 W. Murray Ave., in Farmington.

Janice M. Price (6/21/2007)
Ignacio native Janice M. Price died in Caņon City on Wednesday, June 13, 2007. She was 51.
Miss Price was born to Dick and Opal (Kincaid) Price in Ignacio on Sept. 27, 1955.
She is survived by her sisters Jeri Price of Cortez and Carol McJunkin of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and brother Charles Price of Ignacio.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 19, 2007, in Caņon City. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. today, June 21, 2007, at the Ignacio East Cemetery.
