Alvina Rosetta 'Skip' McCulley (4/11/2007)
Former Durango resident Alvina Rosetta "Skip" McCulley died at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez on Friday, April 6, 2007. She was 77.
Mrs. McCulley was born in Pritchett to Hervy Hudson and Hazel May (Terpening) Hopper on Dec. 8, 1929.
She had lived in Durango for about 50 years.
Mrs. McCulley worked in the gift shop at the Bar D Chuckwagon Suppers and for the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store in Durango.
Her family said she enjoyed dancing at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, and she had a talent for making wine. She had won numerous ribbons for her wine.
"She had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by many friends," her family wrote.
Mrs. McCulley was preceded in death by her husband, Jack McCulley.
She is survived by her sons Bruce McCulley and Mark McCulley, both of Cortez; companion, Mel Houx, of Summit Ridge; sisters Vera Tate of Pueblo and Verda Baxstrom of Cortez; brother John Hopper of Arriola; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has occurred. No services are planned at this time.

William W. Watson (4/8/2007)
Former Durango resident William W. Watson died in Glendale, Ariz., on Friday, March 30, 2007. He was 102.
Mr. Watson was born to Clyde F. and Julia Johnson Watson in Denver on Jan. 27, 1905.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University in Fort Collins and a Master of Science from the University of West Virginia in Morgantown.
Mr. Watson worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a pathologist in various locations in Virginia, West Virginia and Colorado.
He lived in Durango for 10 years and met his wife here.
For his retirement, Mr. Watson chose Sun City, Ariz., where he resided for more than 32 years.
He continued to summer here for many years.
Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Peters Watson; and son William Douglas Watson.
He is survived by his son Dr. James C. Watson of Silverdale, Wash.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three nieces and two nephews.
Private services will be held at a later date.

Lucy Colley Smith (4/7/2007)
Longtime Durango resident Lucy Colley Smith died on Monday, March 26, 2007, in Durango. She was 95.
Mrs. Smith was born to Archibald and Lucy McRae in Duluth, Minn., on Dec. 4, 1911.
Her family said she was a precocious pianist and would play for her kindergarten classmates while they marched around the classroom. Her love for music and talent at the piano were a source of joy throughout her life.
Mrs. Smith met Bob Colley in Ray, Ariz., where she began her teaching career. The couple married in Phoenix in the mid-1930s on June 24. They eventually moved to Hesperus, where Mr. Colley was the business manager for Fort Lewis A&M College. The marriage ended in divorce after 55 years.
Mrs. Smith later taught at Needham Elementary School, where many of Durango's finest residents went through her first- or second-grade classroom.
Mrs. Smith was active in the community, including with the First United Methodist Church of Durango, the American Cancer Society, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Tuesday Literary Club, the Reading Club of Durango, League of Women Voters and IT Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization.
She once wrote that her greatest wish was to live up to the high ideals of P.E.O. In this spirit, she ended each session at her piano with "Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me."
Mrs. Smith was an avid bridge player and reader. Her family said she was blessed to retain her sharp mind to the end of her life.
Mrs. Smith remarried at age 85 in April 1995 in Durango. She and her new husband, Justin Smith, had known each other at the University of Arizona many years earlier. The couple resided in Boise, Idaho, for seven years.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Justin Smith.
She is survived by her daughters Nancy Wyatt of Linden, Va., Annie-Jo Morningstar of Albuquerque and Susan Oleskevich of Durango; five grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
Cremation has occurred. A small memorial service will be held at a later date.
Le Roy C. Rogers (4/7/2007)
Former Bayfield resident Le Roy C. Rogers died in Sun City West, Ariz., on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007. He was 89.
Mr. Rogers was born to Charles T. and Louise Langlois Rogers in Balsam Lake, Wis., on Oct. 14, 1917.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. Mr. Rogers spent his military career supervising clerical staff. He was stationed at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico during the atomic bomb testing, and ended the war in Hawaii helping to process discharge papers for soldiers from the Pacific Theater. At his discharge, he held the rank of master sergeant.
After his military service, Mr. Rogers attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and earned a certificate in Practical Electricity from its Institute of Electrotechnics in 1947.
Mr. Rogers went on to work for the Defense Supply Agency as an inspector of electrical parts and assemblies manufactured by civilian contractors such as Honeywell Corp. During this time, he evaluated parts used in the Apollo space program, including items used in the lunar landing module.
In 1958, he married Catherine Quinn in St. Paul, Minn., where the couple made their first home.
Mr. Rogers retired for the first time in 1972 after 25 years of federal service. The Rogers family chose Southwest Colorado and built a home in Bayfield. They attended St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Bayfield and later Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango. During this time, Mr. Rogers obtained his Colorado Residential Wireman's License and worked as an electrician and carpenter.
In 1977, Mr. Rogers became an engineering aide in the Durango office of the Colorado State Highway Department. He worked on many road projects in Southwest Colorado for more than 10 years, retiring at least once and then coming back to help on specific projects.
Mr. Rogers loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hiking. He learned to cross-country ski in his 60s. He also enjoyed gardening. His family said that it will remember his delicious golden raspberries.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Catherine Rogers, of Cortez; daughter Marie Rogers Patrick of Cortez; sons Kevin Rogers of Castle Rock and Paul Rogers of Grand Island, Neb.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral was held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City West, Ariz. Burial took place at Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
Bobby Joe Romine (4/6/2007)
La Plata County resident Bobby Joe Romine, 26, died in Durango on Saturday, March 31, 2007. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Romine was born to Tommy and Elaine Romine in Kermit, Texas, on May 22, 1980. He later moved to Colorado with his mother, sister Starla Gallegos, and stepfather Joby Martinez. Mr. Romine graduated from Ignacio High School in 1998.
He was a wrestler and weight lifter while attending school in Ignacio. Wrestling would continue to be one of his passions. He enjoyed going to his nephew's wrestling matches as well as teaching and practicing wrestling with him.
Mr. Romine worked at the Durango Wal-Mart in the Hardware Department, where he mixed paint, worked as a salesman and helped customers find what they needed. His family said he enjoyed his job and the time he spent with his co-workers and customers.
Mr. Romine also enjoyed spending time with his family, including helping his Aunt Lupe with yard work, sitting in the yard with his Uncle Junior, playing with his niece and nephews and talking with his mother and sister on the phone. He spent his days off work visiting his sister and brother-in-law, Starla and Patrick Gallegos. His family said he loved spending time with his cousins and joking with them, but also had a serious side when talking with his family. Even when he was small, he liked to play jokes on his sister.
He enjoyed having family get-togethers and helping to cook on the grill for them.
During the football season, Mr. Romine enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys.
His family said that Mr. Romine enjoyed living in Colorado. When he moved from Texas, he enjoyed walking to the river with his cousins to go inner tubing.
Mr. Romine is survived by his mother and stepfather, Elaine and Joby Martinez, of Ignacio; father Tommy Romine of Allen, Texas; sister Starla Gallegos of Ignacio; grandmother Maddie Romine of Allen, Texas; grandparents Anselmo and Lenora Martinez of Ignacio; two nephews and one niece; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 6, 2007 at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Ignacio East Cemetery.
Mary Ann Berry (4/6/2007)
Pagosa Springs resident Mary Ann Berry died at Pine Ridge Extended Care Center in Pagosa Springs on Sunday, April 1, 2007. She was 73.
Mrs. Berry was born to Carl and Barbara Zenthoefer in Evansville, Ind., on Nov. 28, 1933. She was raised in the Evansville area and moved to San Bernardino, Calif., in the 1950s. She raised three sons in Southern California.
She remarried and moved to Barstow, Calif., before retiring to Bullhead City, Ariz., in the mid-1980s. Mrs. Berry had recently moved to Pagosa Springs to be near family.
She enjoyed reading and watching movies.
Mrs. Berry is survived by her sons Larry Dale and Eddie Dale, both of Pagosa Springs, and Tom Dale of Glendale, Calif.; four sisters; two brothers; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation will occur. No services are planned at this time.
Marjorie Pidcock McKonly (4/6/2007)
The mother of Durango resident Baker McKonly, Marjorie Pidcock McKonly, died in Manitou, Ky., on Wednesday, April 4, 2007. She was 72.
Mrs. McKonly was born to John Baker and Hazel Phillips Pidcock in Hopkins County, Ky., on May 9, 1934. She was a stylist at the Snooty Fox Salon and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was active in the church's Outreach Program.
Mr. McKonly was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Earl "Jerry" McKonly in 1999; and son Tony McKonly.
In addition to her son Baker McKonly, Mrs. McKonly is survived by her daughter Kathy Carter of Manitou, Ky.; sisters Dorris King of Old Lyme, Conn., and Rita Owen of Madisonville, Ky.; brother Jim Pidcock of Tampa, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 6, 2007, and from noon until the service time Saturday, April 7, 2007, at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home, 2285 N. Main St., in Madisonville, Ky. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2007, also at the funeral home. The Revs. Weyman McGuire and Michael Behnke will officiate. Burial will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Green River Hospice or the First United Methodist Church Outreach Program.
Jack Bryce McAllister (4/5/2007)
Longtime Durango resident Jack Bryce McAllister died of a heart attack on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007. He was 56.
Mr. McAllister was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert McAllister.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of two tours in the Vietnam War.
He loved the mountains and the outdoors, especially fishing. He held a lifetime fishing license.
Mr. McAllister is survived by his sons, Billy McAllister of Arlington, Texas, and Ebenezer McAllister of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter Ellen Richardson of Arlington, Texas; one cousin; and several grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at noon Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Whispering Pines Apartments, 34237 U.S. Highway 550 North.
