Lela May Metzger (1/10/2007)
Durango resident Lela May Metzger died at Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007. She was 87.
Mrs. Metzger was born to Harold Joseph and Edna Elsie Cook in Salida on Dec. 7, 1919.
On Oct. 31, 1938, she married Leo John Metzger, who preceded her in death in 1980.
She moved to Durango to be near her family in 1983.
She owned the Restaurant in Fort Collins for many years and also worked as the head cook at a nursing home there. Mr. and Mrs. Metzger owned a ranch in Mesa from 1962 to 1968.
Her family said one never went to Mrs. Metzger's house without eating something. She enjoyed baking bread and cinnamon rolls, as well as making divinity. She quilted, gardened, grew all varieties of flowers and took care of every animal that was dumped at her house.
She was a member of the Wellington Federated Church in Wellington and the Pine River Valley Baptist Church in Ignacio.
She was preceded in death by her son, Clifford J. Metzger.
Mrs. Metzger is survived by her daughter, Marjorie L. Hunter, of Durango; son, Leon R. Metzger, of Grants, N.M.; sisters Ruth Feaster of Grants and Grace Edwards of Cañon City; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Hood Mortuary. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Fort Collins.

Keith Hamilton (1/9/2007)
Allison resident Keith Hamilton died from injuries suffered in a car accident in Ignacio on Friday, Jan. 5, 2007. He was 52.
Mr. Hamilton was born to Rowland and Mary Louise Hamilton in Mesa, Ariz., on Aug. 15, 1954. He moved to the Four Corners area in 1986.
On June 7, 1996, he married Kimberlee Kennedy at Vallecito Reservoir. The marriage was later sealed in the Manti Temple in Manti, Utah.
Mr. Hamilton was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of his life. He served as an elder in the church and went on a mission for the church to Canada for two years.
Mr. Hamilton was a facilities manager for the Bloomfield, N.M., School District for the last three years and also owned his own business in Bayfield called Building Control Solutions. He worked as a maintenance manager for the Churches of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Four Corners area for 10 years.
For more than 15 years, he volunteered with the Upper Pine River Fire District as an EMT intermediate and firefighter I. His family said that Mr. Hamilton was proud to be an Eagle Scout and a Boy Scoutmaster.
He enjoyed the outdoors and the Colorado mountains. Among his outdoor pursuits were fishing, hunting, camping and caving. He always looked forward to snow.
Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife, Kimberlee Hamilton, of Allison; children from a previous marriage Mandi Nichols of Conroe, Texas, Aubrey Dubiel of Katy, Texas, Aaron Hamilton of Boulder, Jordan Hamilton of Mesa, Ariz., and daughters Sierra Pennell, Katera Hamilton and Taitin Hamilton, all of Allison; parents Rowland and Mary Louise Hamilton of New Bern, N.C.; grandmother Mattie Hargett of New Bern; brother Kim Hamilton of Gilbert, Ariz.; sisters Capri Barney of Prescott, Ariz., and Chris Thompson of Savannah, Ga.; six grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at Hood Mortuary.
A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bayfield. Bishop Mark Webber will officiate. Burial will occur at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Keith Hamilton Memorial Fund at either Wells Fargo Bank or the Pine River Valley Bank.
Jane (Simpson) Irvin (1/9/2007)
The mother of Durango resident Amelia Yeager, Jane (Simpson) Irvin died in Oakmont, Penn., on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007. She was 76.
Mrs. Irvin was born in Donora, Penn., on Dec. 9, 1931.
She contributed to her community as a volunteer with the Animal Rescue League and on the Fox Chapel School Board.
In addition to her daughter Amelia Yeager, Mrs. Irvin is survived by her children William A. Irvin, Janet Steitz and James Irvin; brother George Simpson; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation and the funeral service will be private. Burial will take place at the Monongahela Cemetery in Monongahela, Penn.

Annette J. Graham (1/7/2007)
Annette "Annie" J. Graham died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 90.
Mrs. Graham was born on Sept. 25, 1916, and raised in Denver, where she graduated from East High School. She then attended Mills College in California and the University of Colorado.
She is survived by her daughters Janet Ricedorff of Durango, Carol Hunsaker of Denver, and Mary Harris of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., as well as seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter.
Her daughters said that her beautiful, loving spirit was a gift to everyone she met.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, in Saint Martin's Chapel at Saint John's Cathedral in Denver.
Dorothy E. Haynes (1/7/2007)
Dorothy E. Haynes died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, in Durango. She was 99.
Mrs. Haynes was born July 7, 1907, in Victor, Colo., to William and Effie Johnson. She married Joseph Cisco Haynes on March 10, 1929, in Durango. The couple were married 41 years until Mr. Haynes' death in 1965. Their family lived in Colorado, West Virginia and New Mexico during the couple's marriage.
Mrs. Haynes enjoyed baking and canning, gardening and making doll clothes and houses for her grandchildren, and always kept a pet parakeet. She was an active member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, where she had many close friends.
Mrs. Haynes' family said she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, whose greatest joy was having her children and grandchildren around her.
She is survived by sons Joseph Cisco Haynes Jr. of Ypsilanti, Mich., Frank Haynes of Edmonds, Wash., Mendal Haynes of Washington, Utah, and Kenneth Haynes of Kennewick, Wash.; daughter Marceil Stolworthy of Durango; 29 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Hood Mortuary. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Aztec, with burial to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Farmington.
Burel Monroe Warrington (1/7/2007)
Burel Monroe Warrington died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. He was 78.
Mr. Warrington was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Joplin, Mo., to Franklin Monroe and Lillie Rozella (Rodney) Warrington. He graduated from the eighth grade at Joplin's Forest Mill School in 1942. For the next five years, the family lived in Salina, Kan., Joplin, again, and California.
In 1947, Mr. Warrington moved to Leadville where he began his life's work as a mechanic. He also lived in Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, where he met his wife, Betty Boyd. They were married Dec. 24, 1950, and divorced in 2002.
In 1965, the family moved to Durango, where Mr. Warrington worked for years at La Plata Motors and Carroll Motors. He retired in 1990 and enjoyed traveling between Colorado, Washington and Texas in his 22-foot motor home. He served as a campground host at the Lake Silvia and Schafer state parks near Montesano, Wash. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, cabinet making and spending time with his grandchildren. In 2002, he moved to Greeley and lived the last 4½ years of his life with his son.
Mr. Warrington is survived by wife Harriett Warrington of Greeley; son Michael Warrington; daughters Jerry W. Warrington of Grand Junction and Terry L. Haney of Montesano, Wash.; five grandchildren; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Warrington was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Donald Wayne Johnson (1/6/2007)
Donald Wayne Johnson, 59, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, from heart complications at his home in Bayfield. He was a long-time resident of Camp Verde, Ariz.
Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 30, 1947, in Santa Ana, Calif., to Arvid and Clara Johnson. He worked as a carpenter, photographer and in road construction. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Methodist Church in Camp Verde and was a 4-H Club photo leader. His passions were his family, hunting, fishing and camping with his grandchildren, and computers.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Charlene Johnson of Bayfield; sons Greg Johnson and Doug Johnson of Camp Verde, Ariz., Charles Fisher of Bayfield, and Ray Fisher of Cottonwood, Ariz.; daughters Kim Knox and Melissa Johnson of Bayfield; brother Bob Johnson; sister Sylvia Hupp; and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Bayfield at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 6, 2007. Chaplain James Newman will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary in Durango.
Bret Charles Wilson (1/6/2007)
Bret Charles Wilson, 43, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, from injuries following a snowmobile accident north of Lemon Reservoir near Durango.
Mr. Wilson was born May 29, 1963, in Fullerton, Calif., to Gene and Joanne Wilson. He grew up in Durango and graduated from Durango High School in 1981. He attended Phoenix Institute of Technology and graduated with honors in 1983.
Mr. Wilson won multiple consecutive track races and championships at Montezuma Raceway in his No. 29 1966 Ford Mustang stock car. He was an avid Ford and NASCAR fan, and also enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, camping, archery and skeet shooting.
He was well-known for his quality machine work and owned Mountain Automotive machine shop for 27 years, his family said. His work was in high demand throughout Colorado and other states for his specialized building of precision high-performance engines.
"Bret was an extremely giving person and always willing to help anyone in need. He was loved by many and will be in his family's hearts forever," said his son, Zachary Wilson.
He particularly loved and was close to his aunt Catherine Drott Uddo of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his son, Zachary Wilson; parents Gene and Joann Wilson; brother Todd Wilson; sister Michelle Brennan, all of Durango; grandmother Ethel Wilson of Del Norte; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wilson also is survived by Kelly Brumley of Mancos, his former wife and mother of Zachary; and former wife Lori Purdy and stepdaughter Samantha of Bayfield.
Visitation will be at Hood Mortuary Chapel from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Florida Road.
Joyca Mary North (1/5/2007)
A Mass for Durango native Joyca Mary North, who died on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, will be celebrated at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Aztec.
Sophie O'Caña (1/5/2007)
Pagosa Springs resident Sophie O'Caña died at her home on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007. She was 55. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. O'Caña was born in Pueblo to Manuel and Jane Lucero on Aug. 15, 1951. She grew up in Pagosa Junction.
On Nov. 15, 1969, she married Frank Darrell O'Caña in Pagosa Springs.
"Her life ambition was reached and surpassed as a daughter, wife and mother," her family wrote.
Mrs. O'Caña enjoyed listening to music, reading, crocheting, cooking, taking walks and praying.
She is survived by her father father, Manuel Lucero of Pueblo; mother, Jane Martinez Lucero, of Pagosa Springs; stepfather, Baltazar Gallegos Sr., of Arboles; sons Frank O'Caña of Boulder and Darrell O'Caña of Peoria, Ill.; daughters Vanessa Miller of Parker and September O'Caña of Pagosa Springs; brothers Joseph Lucero and Louie Lucero, both of Durango, Baltazar Gallegos of Pagosa Springs, Jose Gallegos Jr. of Arboles and David Lucero of Colorado Springs; sister, Mae Jaramillo, of Pagosa Springs; and eight grandchildren.
