A graveside service for Thomas Owens Strever will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at Marvel Cemetery. Mr. Strever died on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006.
Catherine Rosalie Hahn (9/11/2006)
Catherine Rosalie Hahn, 82, a Durango native, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at her home in San Diego.
"Katie was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend," wrote her sister, Rita Lee.
Mrs. Hahn, the third of eight children, was born Feb. 7, 1924, to Richard and Regina Gallavan.
She attended St. Columba Elementary School and graduated from Durango High School.
She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse and joined the Navy Corps of Nurses. At the close of World War II, she returned to Durango and became the office nurse for the late Dr. Leo Lloyd.
Mrs. Hahn met and married a career Navy man, Henry Hahn, who was stationed in Durango as a Navy recruiter. Mr. Hahn was then assigned to the Naval base in San Diego, where the couple lived for the rest of their lives.
They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January 2000.
She loved to play Bunko and was a San Diego Padres season ticket holder and regular attendee.
After her husband's death, Mrs. Hahn lived with her children Michael Hahn and Jean Hahn, who cared for her until her death.
Survivors include children John Hahn, Regina Rock, Patrick Hahn, William Hahn, Mary Van Hood, James Hahn, Michael Hahn and Jean Hahn; brothers Patrick Gallavan of Littleton and Richard Gallavan of Egnar; sisters Regina McCrory of San Diego, Rita Lee of Durango, and Sheila Aspromonte of Mancos; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Sarah Jo.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at St. Columba Church in San Diego. Burial was at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. She was laid to rest next to her husband and her daughter.
Allen Harding Smith (9/10/2006)
Allen Harding Smith, 63, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.
Mr. Smith was born June 7, 1943, in Glendale, Calif., the son of Allen and Mabel Smith. He married Enel Rae Smith in Durango in 1964.
He is survived by his wife, Enel Smith of Aztec, N.M.; sons Justin Smith of Espanola, N.M., Jason Smith and Jared Smith of Aztec, N.M., and Michael Smith of Albuquerque; 10 grandchildren; and numerous relatives.
A gathering time for remembrance will be Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, from 10 a.m. to noon at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango. Jack Wheat will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Richard Leroy Williams (9/9/2006)
Lifelong Southwest Colorado resident Richard Leroy Williams, 62, died at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Williams was born to Elmer L.R. and Myrtle A. (Booker) Brooks Williams on March 1, 1944, in Durango.
In 1963, he married Sharon Thomas in Durango.
Mr. Williams worked as a long-distance truck driver. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and driving.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sharon Williams, of Dolores; sons Roy Williams and Wayne Williams, both of Cortez, and Mark Williams of Dolores; daughters Tammy Williams and Carol Williams, both of Cortez, and Martha Abercrombie of Dolores; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Cremation is planned, with a private family burial to be scheduled later.
Mariah Lynn Lorenzini (9/8/2006)
Mariah Lynn Lorenzini died at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006. She was stillborn.
Her parents are Sam and Amanda Herrera-Lorenzini.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at the Ignacio East Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Sparks of the Pine River Valley Baptist Church will officiate.
A dinner at Ignacio Elementary School will follow the service.
Karen (Clovis) Nothnagel (9/8/2006)
Durango native Karen (Clovis) Nothnagel, 55, died in Goodyear, Ariz., on Monday, Aug. 28, 2006. The cause of death was complications from heart surgery.
She was born to Howard and Clara Cundiff in Durango on Jan. 5, 1951.
In 1971, Mrs. Nothnagel moved to Arizona, where she worked as a dispatcher for the Winslow Police Department. From there, she underwent basic training, becoming the first woman deputy sheriff of Navajo County, which she regarded as one of her proudest accomplishments, according to her family.
During her marriage to Monty Clovis, the couple had two daughters. In 1979, daughter Laurie Clovis suffered severe injuries in a car accident. Mrs. Nothnagel left her career in law enforcement to care for her daughter. As Laurie's recovery progressed, Mrs. Nothnagel also worked as a special-education aide for the Mesa School District.
In 1992, she married Andrew Nothnagel. At the time of her death, the couple was living in Goodyear, where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends. They also cared for Mrs. Nothnagel's mother during that time.
"Karen was a loving wife and a lighthouse to her family and friends," her family wrote. "She was known for her generous heart, caring spirit and contagious laughter. She made everyone welcome and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren."
Mrs. Nothnagel was preceded in death by her daughter, Laurie Clovis.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew Nothnagel, of Goodyear, Ariz.; daughter Tamara Slavik of Show Low, Ariz.; brothers Phillip Wayne Cundiff of Durango and John Cundiff of San Diego; stepdaughters Jody Downs of Goodyear and Becky Schol of Longmont; one grandson; six stepgrandchildren; and two nieces and six nephews.
A memorial service was held Sept. 1, 2006, at the First Southern Baptist Church of Scottsdale. The Rev. Tommy Foster officiated. Burial took place in the Mesa City Cemetery.

Thomas Owen Strever (9/8/2006)
Durango resident Thomas Owen Strever, 52, died at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Tuesday Sept. 5, 2006. The cause of death was heart failure.
Mr. Strever was born to Eugene William and Neva Strever in Myrtle, Creek, Ore., on Feb. 28, 1954. His father was from the Durango area.
He graduated from high school in El Paso, Texas, and completed two years of study in welding at Weber State in Utah. Mr. Strever and his family moved to the Durango area in 1974.
Mr. Strever was employed at Tamarron when it first opened. That's where he met his future wife, Katherine Gatz. The couple married in Las Vegas in 1985.
Mr. Strever later was employed by Riley Construction and Baldwin Construction.
When be had time, he enjoyed fishing and watching sports.
Mr. Strever is survived by his wife, Susan Strever, of Durango; his father, Eugene Strever, of Salida; brother Tim Strever of Spokane, Wash.; sisters Lynne Hess and Myra Rejholec, both of Durango; and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be planned by the family at a later time.
Rosemary G. Ellis (9/5/2006)
Rosemary G. Ellis, 65, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at her home in Durango.
Mrs. Ellis was born Dec. 19, 1940, in Staceyville, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Mary Gerbig. She married Clifton Ellis on Dec. 9, 1967, at Little Cedar, Iowa.
After spending many extended vacations in the wilderness around the Durango area, they moved to Durango in February 1987. She loved to camp in the high country, using mules to travel to the campsite.
Mrs. Ellis was employed as a production assembler for Comstock Creations in Bodo Park, was a hostess for years for K-Bob's Restaurant and was a manager for the Atrium Restaurant.
She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Her other pastimes included bowling, archery, deer bow hunting and shopping.
Mrs. Ellis had excellent people skills and made friends wherever she went, touching many lives.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Gerbig, and her brother, Lenard Gerbig.
Mrs. Ellis is survived by her husband, Clifton; her mother, Mary Adams Gerbig of Osage, Iowa; sons Mark Everson and Randy Everson of Rochester, Minn., and Doug Everson of San Francisco; daughters Kim Foreman of Farmington, Deborah Bohmbach of Hager City, Wis., and Anita Lopez of Durango; brothers Melvin Gerbig and Lloyd Gerbig of Osage; sister Jeanine Kockler of Hanlontown, Iowa; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Hood Mortuary in Durango. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., with Chaplain Earl Caudill of Hospice of Mercy officiating. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Oncology, 3801 N. Main St., Durango, CO 81301, for the purpose of increasing patient resource materials.
Bobby Lee Waters (9/5/2006)
Durango resident Bobby Lee Waters died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006. He was 78.
Mr. Waters was born to Henry and Viola Waters in Louisville, Ky., on July 12, 1928. He grew up in Leadville and worked in mines for most of his life in the Leadville area.
Mr. Waters served in the Army during the Korean War.
On June 2, 1952, he married Ida Romero in Albuquerque.
Mr. Waters enjoyed traveling with his family. He volunteered with the ambulance service in Farmington and with special-needs people.
He is survived by his daughter, Maria Luna of Durango; stepchildren Katherine Jaramillo of Alamosa and Bobby Waters and Mercy Waters, both of Denver; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Waters was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Waters.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today, Sept. 5, 2006, at Hood Mortuary. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Antonio Flores will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery.

Margaret Beltran (9/3/2006)
Native area resident Margaret Beltran, 91, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood.
Mrs. Beltran was born May 4, 1915, in Ignacio, the daughter of Juan and Trinidad Arellano. Mrs. Beltran loved to go to garage sales, enjoyed the outdoors, was an excellent cook and enjoyed being with her family. "Her family was a priority over everything", said her grandson, Maurio Gomez. "She will be missed by all."
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She volunteered with her church as well as in local politics.
She is survived by daughters Dolores Gomez and Pat Beltran of Durango and Freda Nava of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; sons Don Beltran of Grand Junction and Rocky Beltran of Durango; sisters Teresa Scott and Mary Garcia of Billings, Mont.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981.
A rosary will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
A Memorial Mass will follow, also at the church, at 10 a.m. Father Antonio Flores of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate. Cremation did occur and interment of the ashes will follow the Mass at Greenmount Cemetery.
