Roberta N. Kelly (8/4/2006)
The mother of Durango Marathon founder Matthew Kelly, Roberta N. Kelly, died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006. She was 76.
She was born to Burt and Viola Nixon in Chicago on Aug. 12, 1929. In 1950, she married Burt H. Kelly in Champaign, Ill.
Mrs. Kelly was a real-estate agent for many years in Fort Wayne, Ind. She retired to Goodyear, Ariz. She and her husband lived there for 10 years before moving to Durango to be near their son in 2005.
"She was definitely very happy to see women's rights advance," her son, Matthew Kelly, said. "She left college to get married to my Dad, and sort of emerged in the women-to-work movement of the '70s."
Mrs. Kelly is survived by her husband, Burt Kelly, of Durango; son, Matthew Kelly, of Durango; daughters Julia Prullage of Lewis, Del., and Florence Calderone of Columbus, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date.
Angelina L. Barela (8/2/2006)
Durango resident Angelina L. Barela died at her home on Sunday, July 30, 2006. She was 71.
Mrs. Barela was born to Margarito and Thedora Lopez in Arboles on Aug. 26, 1934. She had lived in Albuquerque until moving to Durango four months ago.
Mrs. Barela was preceded in death by her husband, Ernesto Barela, and son, Michael Barela.
She is survived by her sisters Ida Enriquez of Durango and Florence Vallejos of Ignacio; brothers Lee Lopez and Pedro Lopez, both of Arboles, Tony Lopez of Denver, Daniel Lopez of Baltimore and Manuel Lopez of Anchorage, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 2, 2006, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Antonio Flores will officiate.
Burial will occur at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque.
Memory Dawn Vaughan (8/2/2006)
Bayfield resident Memory Dawn Vaughan, 69, died at home on Friday, July 29, 2006. The cause of death was breast cancer.
Mrs. Vaughan was a lifelong resident of Colorado. She was born to Thaddeus and Doris Hansen in Morgan County on Jan. 30, 1937. Her family later moved to Denver, where she met and married Gary Vaughan in April 1953. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Mrs. Vaughan had a long career at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, where she worked as a medical-records assistant, patient-service clerk and finally as a Faculty Practice Fund administrator.
After her children were grown, she moved to Fairplay and then to Kremmling, working for several years as a manager at City Market in Breckenridge.
In 1995, Mrs. Vaughan moved to Durango. Her family said locals will recall her as the clerk "with the smile and the unusual name" at City Market. Later, she moved with her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and David Salazar, to Bayfield. They said she was delighted to share in the arrival and raising of the Salazars' three daughters.
Mrs. Vaughan retired from City Market, but returned to the working world on a part-time basis at Wal-Mart until illness forced her into full-time retirement.
Mrs. Vaughan enjoyed sewing, music and dancing.
"She was kind of a quiet person," her daughter Linda Vaughan said. "She worked hard, loved her family and was pretty dedicated to her grandkids."
Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her daughters Kelly Sawyer of Albuquerque, Linda Vaughan of Baltimore, Nancy Salazar of Bayfield and Beverly Osiecki of Arvada; son Gary Vaughan of Lingle, Wyo.; sister Donna Connor, of Lone Tree; brother Mahlon Hansen, of Bothell, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time.
Rhoda A. Walker (8/2/2006)
A memorial service for Rhoda A. Walker will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker, who died in Green Valley, Ariz., on Sept. 5, 2005, lived in Durango from 1972 to 1995. She was a nurse at Community Hospital for many years.
Her family invites her friends and past nursing friends to attend the service.
Richard James Yeager Jr. (8/1/2006)
Durango resident Richard James Yeager Jr. died at his home on Sunday, July 30, 2006. He was 55. He was born to Dick and Josephine (Paulek) Yeager in Durango on March 5, 1951. Mr. Yeager worked as a youth advocate for the Durango Police Department for 12 years and was the director of youth services at Durango School District 9-R before his retirement in 2001. Mr. Yeager is survived by his wife, Amelia “Amy” Yeager, of Durango; daughter Rebecca Griego, of Durango; mother Josephine Paulek of Durango; stepsons Callan Stenslien and Erik Stenslien, both of Durango; and Nelson Hoyer of Bloomfield, N.M.; stepdaughter Cheryl Farmer, of Lamar; sisters Patricia Emmett, of Durango, Yvonne Howe, of Cortez, and Debra Rogers, of Fruita; brother Kenneth Yeager, of Cotopaxi; one grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation will occur. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 3, 2006, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Andrew Cooley of St. Mark’s and the Rev. Earl Caudill of Hospice of Mercy will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the La Plata County Historical Society, P.O. Box 3384, Durango, CO 81302.
Leonore L. Reeder (9/29/2006)
La Plata County native Leonore L. Reeder, 79, died at her home in Denver on Monday, Sept. 25, 2006. The cause of death was heart-related.
Mrs. Reeder was born in Kline to Adrian and Catherine (Dennison) Locke on Oct. 11, 1926. She was raised in the Animas Valley and graduated from Durango High School in the mid-1940s. After graduation, she worked for a few years as an operator at Mountain States Telephone Co.
On Nov. 29, 1947, she married Walter Leon Reeder in Durango. The Reeders left Durango in the late 1940s.
Mrs. Reeder enjoyed doing a lot of craftwork like needlepoint and cross stitch. She was also a volunteer for her local senior center.
Mrs. Reeder was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Reeder.
She is survived by her son, Leroy Reeder, of Patterson, N.Y.; sister Eileen Albrecht of Durango; and brother Russell Locke of San Antonio.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at Hood Mortuary. A graveside service will be held following the visitation at 1 p.m. at Hermosa Cemetery, which is located just past Honeyville on U.S. Highway 550.
Betty June Good (9/29/2006)
Betty June Good, 68, a lifelong resident of Colorado, died at her daughter's home in Durango on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006. The cause of death was cancer.
Mrs. Good was born to Clarence Robert Ramsey and Marie Edith Grandstaff Ramsey in Platteville on Jan. 27, 1938. She graduated from Colorado Springs High School.
She lived for several years in Cortez and spent the majority of her life in the Denver area.
On Sept. 28, 1957, she married Roger Good in Raton, N.M. The marriage later ended in divorce.
She was an avid seamstress, loved to fish and enjoyed volunteering at a thrift store and with hospice.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Janet Sue Boyington.
Mrs. Good is survived by her son, Michael Good, of Cortez; daughter Julee Glynn of Durango; her former husband and her children's father, Roger Good, of Lafayette; sister, Kay Spink, of Colorado Springs; two grandsons; and a niece.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road. A celebration of her life will be held immediately following the service at her daughter's residence, 610 Aloo Gobi, which intersects with County Road 302 on Florida Mesa.
Virginia S. Johnston (9/29/2006)
The mother of Durango resident Virginia Benton, Virginia S. Johnston, 93, died in Santa Fe on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006. The cause of death was cancer.
Mrs. Johnston was born to Medary Wilson Stark and Sylvia Prudentia Colcord Stark in St. Albans, W.V., on Dec. 20, 1912. The family moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she attended the Columbus School for Girls. Mrs. Johnston went on to graduate from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She later returned to school and became an art teacher in the Los Angeles Public Schools. A lifelong artist, Mrs. Johnston continued her work and the study of art throughout her life.
She married Frederick H. Johnston in 1937. Because of Mr. Johnston's work with the Army Corps of Engineers and the General Services Administration, the family moved numerous times to many places around the United States.
During her life, Mrs. Johnston was active in the Presbyterian Church, Kappa Alpha Theta, the Junior League and many other organizations.
Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Johnston, in 1970.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Benton, of Durango; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at the El Castillo Retirement Residences Community Room in Santa Fe. Mrs. Johnston had lived at El Castillo for the past 22 years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of Presbyterian Medical Services.
Jamie Anne Hutchens (9/29/2006)
Jamie Anne Hutchens was stillborn in Grand Junction on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006.
Her family said that they loved her and would miss her dearly.
Jamie Anne is survived by her parents, Todd and Trish Hutchens of Durango; grandparents Jim and Bonnie Hutchens and Keith and Dinah Jones, all of Durango, Jean Bruscia of Albuquerque and Steve and Marty Schlageter.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Hood Mortuary.
Dale G. Roulstin (9/28/2006)
Durango resident Dale G. Roulstin, 51, died in Durango on Friday, Sept. 8, 2006. The cause of death was a heart attack.
Known as "Doc," he was born to Joan Roulstin in Syracuse, N.Y., on Dec. 4, 1954. Mr. Roulstin attended Hollis High School in New Hampshire and was a member of the graduating class in 1973. He went on to attend the University of New Hampshire.
Mr. Roulstin served in the Air Force and was stationed in Phoenix. He was honorably discharged in 1979.
On July 6, 1985, Mr. Roulstin married Catherine Loehr in Telluride. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Since 1980, he had worked as a computer programmer and consultant in locations all over the West including Durango; Denver; Park City, Utah; Newport Beach, Calif.; and Dallas.
Mr. Roulstin had lived in Durango on and off since 1987. He was a member of the Dalton Ranch Golf Club.
His family said that Mr. Roulstin had traveled extensively in Cuba, Mexico and Nicaragua, and that he had many good friends in Cien Fuegos, Cuba.
His children said Mr. Roulstin was a loving father and introduced them to golf and traveling. They said he always told them, "Don't be in a hurry to get somewhere, the party doesn't start until you arrive."
Mr. Roulstin is survived by his children, Ashley Roulstin and Trevor Roulstin, both of Durango; mother, Joan Paine, of Manchester, N.H.; sisters Bonnie Paine and Heidi Paine, both of Manchester; and brother, George Paine, of East Hampton, Conn.
A celebration of Mr. Roulstin's life will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 14, 2006, in the Bear Park area of The Ranch in Hermosa.

Kevin Farrell (9/28/2006)
Former Durango resident Kevin Farrell died in Santa Fe on Monday, Sept. 25, 2006. He was 57.
Mr. Farrell was born on March 26, 1949. He founded O'Farrell Hat Co. of Durango and O'Farrell Hats in Santa Fe.
Mr. Farrell lived in Durango from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.
Mr. Farrell was also instrumental in starting the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Farrell; son, Scott Farrell; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at Rosario Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Santa Fe.
