A memorial service for Walter J. Pera will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Lone Tree Cemetery in Telluride. Mr. Pera died on Tuesday, July 4, 2006.

Donella M. Wood (8/8/2006)
Donella M. Wood, 74, died at her home in East Carbon, Utah, on Friday, Aug. 4, 2006. The cause of death was cancer.
She was born to Thomas and Rutha May Bennett Adams in Perkins, Okla., on Jan. 6, 1932.
Her family moved to Dove Creek when she was very young so her father could run their boarding house and grocery store. That's where she met her future husband, Joseph Wood.
Later her family moved to East Carbon, so her father could work in the Columbia Mine. She lived there for the rest of her life.
She married Joseph Wood in Price, Utah, on Sept. 9, 1949.
Her family said she was always busy doing something. Some people knew her from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was an active member. Others knew her from the many haircuts she gave them and their family members at her business, Dawn's Beauty Shop.
Her family said that most people knew her for her "infectious laughter, her wit and the joy she felt in making all feel welcomed, loved and cared for."
They also said, "She took great pride in her family, and she enjoyed and loved caring and cooking for all of them. She absolutely loved her children, but it was well known to them she favored the grandchildren, and each one was given her special love."
Mrs. Wood is survived by her husband, Joseph Wood, of East Carbon, Utah; children Duane Wood of Castle Dale, Utah, Donald Wood of Farmington, Larry Wood of East Carbon, Terry Wood of St. George, Utah, and Michelle Lovell of West Jordan, Utah; sisters Esther Davenport of Jackson, Mo., and Lois Weaver of Grand Junction; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 8, 2006, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main St. in Price, Utah, and for an hour before the funeral, which will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at the East Carbon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ward. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Sunnyside, Utah.
Susan Lynn Evans (8/7/2006)
Susan Lynn Evans, who provided home health-care services in Bayfield, died Friday, July 28, 2006, in Durango.
Mrs. Evans was 51. Her daughter, Erica Beatman, said she died of pancreatic cancer.
"She was a very kind person," Beatman said.
Mrs. Evans was born in Salt Lake City on Aug. 27, 1954. She grew up in Southern California. She was married to Eric W. Beatman for 31 years.
She moved to Bayfield in 1994, where she was active in the community and provided home health-care services to those in need.
Beatman said her mother will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her husband and daughter.
Mrs. Evans will be cremated and no memorial services are planned at this time, as per her wishes.

June M. Anderson (8/6/2006)
Former Durango resident June M. Anderson died in Montrose on Thursday, July 27, 2006. She was 88.
She lived in Durango with her family from 1956 to 1976 and worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. She was active in B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 507, a member of Beta Sigma Phi and played with a local bridge group.
She was born to William H. and Florence S. (Haifley) Kelley in Montrose on June 9, 1918. Her grandparents were early settlers in the area, and Mrs. Anderson grew up with ranching parents in the Uncompahgre Valley. She attended Uncompahgre Grade School and graduated from Montrose High School.
On July 31, 1938, she married Joseph I. Anderson in Montrose. Beginning in 1946, she went to work for Mountain Bell as a telephone operator. She and her husband each worked for the company for 30 years in both Delta and Durango until their retirement in 1976, when they moved back to Montrose.
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson both were members of the Telephone Pioneers and volunteered for the historical museum. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Columbine Club and the Sunshine Circle Club.
She enjoyed the outdoors and spent many days jeeping, camping and fishing in the Colorado mountains. Her family said that she maintained close relationships with all of her extended family and seldom missed their birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson also enjoyed traveling.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Anderson; and her son, Melvin Anderson.
She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Gollaway, of Lakewood; brothers William Kelley, of Delta, and Donald Kelley, of Montrose; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. Burial will follow in the Valley Lawns Cemetery, south of Montrose.

Mike Davis (8/6/2006)
A memorial service for Pueblo Community College President Mike Davis will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, in the College Center, 900 W. Orman Ave., in Pueblo.
Mr. Davis died in a plane crash on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006. He was flying his personal plane to an open house at the Cortez campus when it went down in Sagauche County.
Mr. Davis was PCC's executive vice president and interim president in 2000 and became president in 2001. He was known for his leadership in the Pueblo community.
Mr. Davis and his wife, Beth, moved to Pueblo from Indiana, where he was an administrator at Vincennes University.
Mr. Davis will be buried in Indiana. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Eloida 'Addie' Chavez (8/6/2006)
Former Durango resident Eloida "Addie" Chavez died in her Albuquerque home on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006. She was 89.
She was born in Lone Tree on Nov. 29, 1916. In 1935, she married Ray Chavez, and the couple raised eight children. They lived in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming before settling in Durango after Mr. Chavez retired from Arch Mineral Mining.
They enjoyed gardening, hunting, traveling and playing cards with friends and family.
In 1995, Mrs. Chavez moved to Albuquerque.
Her family said she had a curious mind and was current with world affairs, politics (they said she was a true skeptic), sports and entertainment. Mrs. Chavez's hobbies included sewing, crocheting and ceramics. Mrs. Chavez also was an avid reader and a crossword-puzzle and Scrabble enthusiast.
Mrs. Chavez was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Chavez; oldest son Edward Chavez; and great-grandson Michael Edward Hughes.
She is survived by her daughters, Tesa, Loyola, Bette, Cordelia and Cynthia; sons Paul and Marcus; siblings Angie Trujillo, Sam Trujillo, Isabel Trujillo, Judy Romero, Louise Hale and Emily Millich; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery next to her husband.

Dieter Miesler (8/6/2006)
A memorial service for Dieter Miesler will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at McPherson Memorial Chapel at Fort Lewis College.
The family has said that the service will be casual, with reminiscences.
Mr. Miesler died on Monday, May 22, 2006.
Alba Toffoli Plumb (8/4/2006)
La Plata County native Alba Toffoli Plumb, 91, died at home on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.
She was born to Victor and Giovanna (Dalla Via) Toffoli in the mining camp of Perins on March 18, 1915.
After graduating from Durango High School in 1934, she went to work at Hillfield Air Force Base in Utah as a supervisor in the addressograph department.
In 1945, she married Donald Curtis Plumb in Aztec. The couple moved to Nevada.
Mrs. Plumb returned to the Durango area in 2004 and lived with her daughter and son-in-law, LaVerne and Travis Luz, in Hesperus.
Mrs. Plumb enjoyed crocheting, bird watching, exercising, picking chokecherries and sharing the family's yellow Labrador retriever, Cody.
Mrs. Plumb was preceded in death by her husband, Don Plumb; and her son, Victor Nile Plumb.
She is survived by her daughters LaVerne Luz of Hesperus, and Dona Caro of Sacramento, Calif.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Nevada and California.
Cremation will occur and Mrs. Plumb's ashes will be spread on Perin's Peak in honor of her birth in the area. No services are planned.
Richard George Hupf (8/4/2006)
Durango resident Richard George Hupf, 74, died at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006. The cause of death was a heart attack.
Mr. Hupf was born to George and Genevieve Hupf in Hastings, Neb., on May 24, 1932.
He graduated from Saint Benedict College in Atchison, Kan., where he played college football on a scholarship.
Mr. Hupf served in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany and worked in communications. After an honorable discharge, he became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
In 1960, Mr. Hupf married Durango native Mary Lucille Brown at St. Mary's Church in Chandler, Ariz.
Mr. Hupf was a superintendent of commercial construction for Kealy Construction Co. in Hastings, Farmington and Phoenix for more than 40 years. Mr. Hupf supervised the construction of several schools, hospitals and banks in and around Farmington.
His family said he was devoted to them and was an active member for more than 50 years in the Knights of Columbus, holding office and participating in numerous service projects. Mr. Hupf was also a member of the Farmington Elks Lodge and was a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Hupf was preceded in death by his grandson Cory Palmer.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Lucille Brown Hupf, of Mancos; daughters Brenda Hupf Fanto of Farmington, and Renee Hupf Eastin of Mancos; son, Richard Dean Hupf of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; stepson, Michael Jerry Palmer of Dallas; sister Jean M. Pillar of Las Cruces, N.M.; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Ave. The Rev. James Koeningsfeld with Saint Columba Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
