Leathea Leola Davis (8/29/2006)
Lifelong La Plata County resident Leathea Leola Davis, 88, died at her Durango home on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006. The cause of death was heart failure.
She was born in Durango to Anthony and Annie Lechner on June 25, 1918. Her family lived out toward Rockwood, and her daughter, Sally Harms, said her mother spent many happy hours in the mountains with her siblings and cousins. Sometimes they would walk to Durango.
Mrs. Davis attended St. Columba School through the eighth grade.
On Sept. 6, 1939, she married Reginald Miller Davis.
Mrs. Davis was a rancher and homemaker. She enjoyed reading, mountain touring, dining with friends and, most of all, spending time with her family.
Family members said she will be remembered as an excellent mother, grandmother and sister.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Davis.
She is survived by her daughter, Sally Harms of Durango; son, Leroy Davis of Bloomfield, N.M.; sisters Marjorie Warner of Durango, and Willa Mosley of Cedar Hill, N.M.; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 29, 2006, at Hood Mortuary. A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, also at Hood. Burial will follow at Florida Cemetery, near the intersection of county roads 225 and 228.

Linda S. Peterson Callihan (8/29/2006)
Former Durango resident Linda S. Peterson Callihan, 63, died in Grand Junction on Monday, Aug. 28, 2006. The cause of death was breast cancer.
Mrs. Callihan was born to Harold and Versie Peterson in Colorado Springs on July 15, 1943. The family moved to Durango in 1944. Mrs. Callihan graduated from Durango High School and Fort Lewis College.
On May 30, 1964, she married Michael Callihan in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Mrs. Callihan worked for the Mesa County Health Department for several years before moving to Houston. After relocating to Grand Junction, Mr. and Mrs. Callihan owned a window-covering business.
Her main interests were activities involving her family, including fishing and camping excursions in the mountains of Colorado. Mrs. Callihan especially enjoyed traveling with her mother and sister.
Mrs. Callihan is survived by her husband, Michael Callihan of Grand Junction; son, Cary Callihan of Aurora; daughter, Christia Cordray of Parker; sister, Christine Tubbs of Grand Junction; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at Greenmount Cemetery. A reception honoring her life will take place at the First Baptist Church of Durango immediately following the service.
Suzanne Martha Martinez (8/27/2006)
Lifelong Durango resident Mrs. Suzanne Martha Martinez died from cancer on Aug. 25, 2006.
She was born on May 23, 1945 in Durango to Jose and Lupe Quintana. She graduated from Durango High School in 1964 and married David Martinez on Oct. 23, 1971 in Durango.
Mrs. Martinez worked as a secretary for the federal government, Gradens Blackwood and Nichols, Fort Lewis College and the Colorado Land Title Company.
She is survived by her husband, David Martinez, of Durango and brother Joseph Quintana of Durango.
Visitation is from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at Hood Mortuary, followed by a Rosary at 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Celebration of Mass is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, send contributions to Hospice at Mercy Hospital.
Jeannine June Wegher (8/27/2006)
Durango resident Jeannine June Wegher died on August 21, 2006, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Wegher was born in 1928 in Franklin, Neb. She graduated from Colorado Woman's College with a degree in radiology technology. She and her husband opened Riteway carpet and Tile in the 1960s and operated the business until 1986. Mrs. Wegher worked with medical records at Mercy Hospital for many years.
Mrs. Wegher is survived by her centurion mother Florence McKee, sisters Marilyn Whiltelaw and Pat Diedrichs, all of Denver; daughters Susan Day of Pagosa Springs and Kristie Holder of Tucson, Ariz.; son Mark Wegher of Durango; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be announced.
Mary Patricia Kane Robertson (8/26/2006)
Durango resident Mary Patricia Kane Robertson died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Mercy Regional Medical Center. She was 82.
Mrs. Robertson was born to Thomas and Katherine Kane on July 1, 1924, in Homer, N.Y. She married Richard L. Robertson on Oct. 22, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cortland, N.Y. She lived in Homer for the first 25 years of her life and Arizona the next 25 years until she moved to a ranch just outside of Durango in 1973.
Mrs. Robertson worked in food services at Fort Lewis College for 20 years, and also worked on the ranch. She was a devout member of St. Columba Catholic Church. She loved going to garage sales and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. Robertson is survived by her husband, Richard, of Durango; her 10 children: George Robertson of Chandler, Ariz.; Mary Ann Baird of Show Low, Ariz.; Rick Robertson of Whitehall, Mich.; Tom Robertson of St. Johns, Ariz.; Linda Thompson of Aztec, N.M.; Nancy Isbell of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Susie Carmack of Durango; Joe Robertson of Sandy, Utah; Chris Robertson of Albuquerque, N.M.; Patty Genualdi of Aztec, N.M.; a sister, Margaret Leavy of Rochester, N.Y.; 30 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A recitation of the rosary will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday Aug. 27, 2006, at St. Columba. Visitation is before the rosary at St. Columba and starts at 5 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at St. Columba Catholic Church. The Rev. James Koenigsfeld will officiate. Burial will be at Crestview Cemetery.
Harry Powell (8/24/2006)
Part-time Vallecito Reservoir resident Harry Powell died on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, while returning from a hike inside the Weminuche Wilderness north of Vallecito. He was 72.
Mr. Powell was born to B.L. and Ruth Powell in Marlin, Texas, on April 29, 1934. On Dec. 7, 1962, he married Cecilia Powell in Dickinson, Texas.
He served in the Air Force as a Korean-language specialist, spending two years in Korea and one year in Japan.
Mr. Powell worked for 28 years in computer operations for Texaco in Houston. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to McAllen, Texas, and had spent their summers at Vallecito since 1998.
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Cecilia Powell, of Texas and Colorado; sons Lester Powell of Tomball, Texas, and Kyle Powell of La Porte, Texas; daughter Julie Sherer of Friendswood, Texas; sister Norma Abraham of Galveston, Texas; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation will occur.
Adrian Leon Taylor (8/23/2006)
Durango resident Adrian Leon Taylor died of blood poisoning at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006. He was 73.
Mr. Taylor was born to Ira and Effie Mae Taylor in Big Spring, Texas, on May 4, 1933. He graduated from Blackwell High School in Blackwell, Okla., where he was known as "Jock" Taylor.
He was the quarterback of the football team; competed in track; and played baseball, basketball and golf. Mr. Taylor enjoyed his high school years so much that he never missed a five-year reunion after graduation.
He attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College.
Mr. Taylor served in the Army and was ready to ship out to Korea during the Korean War just as it ended.
He worked as the administrator of the Blackwell Nursing Home and ended his management career as a supervisor for Standard Produce in Dallas.
On July 23, 1982, Mr. Taylor married Mary Loreen Heldenbrand.
They moved to the Durango area following his retirement in August 1998.
Mr. Taylor was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Durango, was active in the Presbyterian Church as a deacon and on the personnel committee and was a volunteer with the Durango Police Department.
His favorite pastimes included woodworking, golfing, playing cards and dominos.
He enjoyed time with friends.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Mary Taylor of Durango; sons Steve Taylor of Ada, Okla., and Scott Taylor; stepson David Enoch of Dallas; stepdaughter Lynda Berger of Durango; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church of Durango.

Calvin Dale Hansen (8/22/2006)
Durango resident Calvin Dale Hansen, 79, died at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006. The cause of death was kidney failure.
Mr. Hansen was born to David and Vera Hansen in Fillmore, Utah, on May 11, 1927. He enlisted in the Navy after his graduation from high school and served in the Korean War. Afterwards Mr. Hansen moved to Imperial Beach, Calif., where he met and married his first wife, Betty Wall, in 1950.
After moving to Durango in the early 1970s, Mr. Hansen owned and operated his own tree nursery, Hansen's Nursery.
In 1992, he married Vivian Hansen, and the marriage later ended in divorce.
He enjoyed fishing, and his family said he had a passion for genealogy.
Mr. Hansen was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hansen, and his son, James Hansen.
He is survived by his daughters Vera Hansen and Irene Hansen, both of Durango; sister Ione Hansen of Salt Lake City; brothers Alton Speakman of Salt Lake City, and Gerald Hansen of Santa Maria, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and thre great-grandchildren
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at the First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Homer T. Loomis (8/22/2006)
Former Durango resident Homer T. Loomis died on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, in Inverness, Fla. He was 100.
Mr. Loomis was born to Frank A. and Mary Emma Tuttle Loomis in Smyrna, N.Y., on June 15, 1906. As a teenager, he moved with his family to Clearwater, Fla., where he married Kathryn Drew in 1929.
Mr. Loomis owned and operated Star Furniture in Clearwater until 1945, when he moved with his family to Durango for a dry climate.
In Colorado, he was in sales, owned a furniture-manufacturing plant and did building appraisals, plumbing and had other occupations.
Mr. and Mrs. Loomis returned to Clearwater in 1957 to care for aging parents. At that time, he began working for Burnison's Clearwater Plumbing, where he worked until his retirement in 1972.
He chose Inverness as the place where he wanted to retire. He bought property there and built a house. He worked for the city of Inverness as a building inspector and performed building appraisals throughout Citrus County.
Mr. Loomis was active in Baptist churches all his life. He taught Sunday School classes for more than 70 years, served as a deacon, Sunday School director and church trustee/director. At the time of his death, Mr. Loomis was a member of First Baptist Church of Inverness.
His family members are scattered all over the world, but they all came together in June to commemorate Mr. Loomis' centennial birthday. They celebrated with 100 pies.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Loomis, in 1998.
Mr. Loomis is survived by his children, Marjorie McGahey of Floral City, Fla., Charles Loomis of Coarsegold, Calif., and Kay Eaton of Inverness; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
