Pete Vincent Martinez (6/19/2006)
Pete Vincent Martinez, a longtime Ignacio resident known for his habit of cruising the town's streets in his car, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006. He was 87.
Mr. Martinez died in Chandler, Ariz., where he had been living for the last five years.
Mr. Martinez was born April 18, 1919, in Edith, N.M., but grew up in Ignacio. He worked in construction in Colorado and New Mexico and did maintenance for the city of Ignacio. He retired in the early 1970s but continued to enjoy the area.
Mr. Martinez was a past member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
His daughter, Joanna Rotenberger, knew he loved to fish and go elk hunting, but everyone knew he loved to drive.
"He would take my mom and they would just drive for hours," Mrs. Rotenberger said. "People around town knew him for cruising around."
The Martinezes often had friends by the house and visited them on their drives.
"He was a pretty funny guy," his daughter said. "Everybody was always laughing."
Survivors include his daughter, Joanna Rotenberger of Gilbert, Ariz.; a granddaughter; brothers, Dolores Martinez of East Carbon, Utah, and Leo Martinez of Provo, Utah; and sisters, Josie Gallegos of Mancos and Theresa Romero of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ciprie Martinez.
Recitation of the rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the church. A burial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
Burial will be in Ignacio West Cemetery in Ignacio.
Jesse N. Randall (6/19/2006)
Jesse N. Randall, a former resident of Durango and a graduate of Durango High School, died Saturday, June 17, 2006. She was 77.
Mrs. Randall, the daughter of Earl James Smith and Vivian Smith-Jordan, was born March 25, 1929, Aztec, and was raised in Durango.
She graduated from Durango High School in 1947 and married Earl D. Randall the next year.
Mrs. Randall left Durango in 1964 when her husband was transferred to Albuquerque. She was a member of La Mesa Presbyterian Church for many years. She served as a deacon and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
She also volunteered at Presbyterian Hospital for many years until prevented by her health.
Survivors include her husband, Earl D. Randall; sons, Earl Randall of Denver, Lyle Randall of Albuquerque and Paul Randall of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three children.
A memorial service will be held at La Mesa Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque, with a funeral service to be held at Hood Mortuary in Durango at a later date.
Phillip Schaub (6/18/2006)
Bayfield resident Phillip Schaub, 77, died at his home on Wednesday, June 14, 2006. The cause of death was cancer.
Mr. Schaub had lived in the area since 1985. He worked as a rural carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until 2004.
He was born to Harold W. and Elizabeth Whitcomb Schaub in St. Paul, Minn., on Jan. 16, 1929. He was educated at Shattuck Military Academy in Fairbault, Minn., and graduated in 1946.
In 1947, Mr. Schaub enlisted in the Army and served in Japan and Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1949 and returned to St. Paul, where he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a business degree.
In 1955, he married Sheila McCormick, and they had four sons. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1971, Mr. Schaub married Marian Jeffrey in Mitchell, S.D. The couple lived in Minnetonka, Minn., before moving to Bayfield.
His family said Mr. Schaub was good at math and worked for IBM in Minneapolis for 25 years.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a founding member of the Whittington, Minn., Center of the National Rifle Association.
Mr. Schaub was an avid reader, outdoorsman and hunter.
Mr. Schaub is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marian Schaub; sons Phillip Schaub and Timothy Schaub, both of Minneapolis, Peter Schaub of Edina, Minn., and Thomas Schaub of Duluth, Minn.; sister Sandra Hester of Indio, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2006, at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Scott Kujath will officiate. Immediately following there will be a celebration of his life at his home at 814 Highview Road in Bayfield.

Lyman Earl Brown (6/18/2006)
A familiar figure in Durango, Lyman Earl Brown, 81, died in Durango on Monday, June 12, 2006. The cause of death was hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
He moved to Durango in 1994, living on Durango Mountain, taking care of the home of Stan and Ann Lyman, his brother and sister-in-law, during the winter and sharing it with them in the summer. After a heart attack in 2003, his doctor suggested he move into town. He had lived at Tamarin Square for the last three years.
He worked at south City Market from August 1995 to April 2002.
Mr. Brown was born to Ronald and Flossie Brown in North Baltimore, Ohio, on Aug. 26, 1924. He attended high school in Bellevue, Ohio, but left before graduation when he was 17 to enlist in the Navy during World War II.
He was stationed at Great Lakes, Ill.; Quantico, Va.; San Diego; on the USS Yorktown in Hawaii; and onboard the USS Castor. Mr. Brown served as a fire controlman 3rd Class. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 21, 1946.
Mr. Brown was the boxing champ for his fleet. He was awarded numerous medals and citations, including a Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with one star; an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine stars; an American Area Medal; a Philippine Liberation Medal with one star; a Good Conduct Medal; a Victory Medal; a Bronze Star for the Okinawa Gunto Operation, which he took part in from March 17 to June 11, 1945; and a Bronze Star for 3rd Fleet operations against Japan from July 10 to 15, 1945.
Mr. Brown married Yvonne Orwig and after her death was left to raise their seven children. He later married Joyce Erickson. She also preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Association of Retired People.
Mr. Brown's family said that he had many friends from his walks on Main Avenue. He would talk to everyone - townspeople, family, friends, tourists and shop owners. Mr. Brown was recognizable for the blue hat he always wore.
Mr. Brown also enjoyed music and dancing. He spent the night before his death socializing and dancing at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031.
He was also an avid gardener and fisherman.
"Lyman was the most kind, respectful gentleman," his friend Dean Reynal said. "Diverse in his acceptance from homeless to highest of upper class. He loved everyone."
Mr. Brown is survived by his children, Lynn Earl Brown and Ronald LeRoy Brown, both of Washington, Christine Susanne Brown of Florida, Jeryline Rene Brown of Arizona, and Mark Stanley Brown, Curtis Ryan Brown and Janine Annette Brown, all of Ohio; brothers Stan Brown of Durango and Bob Brown; sister Mary Brown; and numerous grandchildren.
Mr. Brown donated his remains to science. Cremation will occur later.
A celebration of Mr. Brown's life will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2006, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031. Casual dress is requested.

Richard Jay Everett (6/17/2006)
Richard Jay Everett died Monday, June 12, 2006, in Durango.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Hood Mortuary. A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2006, also at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Robert Kujath will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
Charles Delmar Williamson (6/17/2006)
Musician Charles Delmar Williamson died Sunday, June 11, 2006, in Durango. He was 80.
Mr. Williamson was born to Charles Ross and Hazel Williamson in St. Marys, W.Va., on Dec. 21, 1925. He graduated from St. Marys High School in 1943, and in May 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Marines.
Throughout his life and musical career he lived in West Virginia, California, Hawaii and Colorado. He was always involved in music in some way, whether it was managing a music store, playing his trombone - sometimes in big bands - or working as a professional organist. He enjoyed the extensive traveling of his career as a musician, and his family said he was passionate about riding his motorcycle.
In 1974, Mr. Williamson married Barbara Friend in Hawaii.
Mr. Williamson was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Williamson, and his daughter, Cheryl Williamson.
He is survived by his son, Charles L. "Lee" Williamson, of Bayfield; sister Jean Smith of Lakewood, Ohio; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation will occur and no services are planned at this time.
Marta Delgado (6/17/2006)
Durango resident Marta Delgado died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 78.
Mrs. Delgado is survived by her daughter, Linda Paris, of Durango; brother, Tim Correa; sister, Tillie Kaplan; and numerous other family members.
A family gathering will be held in her honor in Denver.
Mark William Bailey (6/14/2006)
Former Ignacio teacher Mark William Bailey, 66, died in Longmont on June 9, 2006. The cause of death was not disclosed.
He was born in Denver to William and Jeanne (Reynolds) Bailey on Oct. 4, 1939, and grew up there.
Mr. Bailey earned a bachelor's and two master's degrees at Adams State College in Alamosa. He then went on to earn a third master's degree in history at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind.
Mr. Bailey married Phyllis Brown in La Jara on Sept. 3, 1960. The marriage later ended in divorce. He then married Connie Willard in August 1997.
Mr. Bailey taught for 30 years, beginning in Delta but spending most of his career at Ignacio High School. His family said he was a mentor to many students.
His family said that Mr. Bailey enjoyed poetry, classical music, literature of all kinds, history, pets and sports. They said he was an advocate for children and the disadvantaged.
After his retirement, Mr. Bailey enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Bailey.
He is survived by his former wife, Phyllis Hoyt, of Hermosa; children Amanda Dolan of Longmont, Vincent Bailey of Montrose, Carol Johnson of Mooresville, Ind., and Susan Katzer of Colorado Springs; sisters Janet Hunt of Lincoln, Neb., Sally Davidson of Muskogee, Okla., and Deanna Guglielmo of Hudson, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.
Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2006, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Longmont.
