Cecil 'Lou' Phillips (3/22/2006)
Durango resident Cecil "Lou" Phillips died from injuries received in a car accident in Waxahachie, Texas, on Friday, March 17, 2006. He was 58.
Mr. Phillips was born to Cecil Adres and Wilma (McCollum) Phillips in Waco, Texas, on June 20, 1947. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart.
Mr. Phillips graduated from Baylor University in Waco. He was a certified public accountant and was a partner in firms in Albuquerque and California.
Mr. Phillips belonged to the American Legion Post in Silverton, where he served as treasurer. He also was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Shelly.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Connie Melton Phillips, of Durango; son Robert Scott Phillips of San Diego; daughter Gretchyn Jane Phillips Barbee of San Diego; stepdaughters Laura Davis of Durango and Stefanie Wofford of Allen, Texas; sisters Brenda Pophin of Round Rock, Texas, and Alice Wagner of Lakeland, Fla.; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday, March 23, 2006, at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Waxahachie, Texas. Interment of the urn will follow at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Patricia Ann Sullivan Moralez (3/21/2006)
Former Ignacio resident Patricia Ann Sullivan Moralez, 52, died on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Craig Memorial Hospital. The cause of death was cancer.
She was born to David and Alicia Sullivan in Farmington on Sept. 1, 1953. When she was 1 year old, the Sullivan family moved to Ignacio.
Mrs. Moralez grew up on a ranch east of Ignacio and was active in 4-H and the community. She attended school in Ignacio, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Outstanding Masonic Award. She graduated from Ignacio High School in 1972. After graduation, Mrs. Moralez attended Fort Lewis College and graduated from Colorado State University.
She worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in Houston as a grain inspector before moving to Craig in 1982. There she became the county executive director of the ASCS, which was later known as the Farm Service Agency.
She married Dan Moralez in Las Vegas on June 1, 1988.
Mrs. Moralez was involved with the Moffat County Fair for many years in Craig and served on the county fair board until her illness no longer allowed her to do so. She also belonged to the Boom Town Players for many years.
Mrs. Moralez received several awards, including the Distinguished Service Award to the National and Colorado Association of County Office Employees of the Farm Service Agency, super superintendent for the Moffat County Fair and several certificates of merit. She was most proud of being named the first Moffat County Care Volunteer of the month in June 2004.
Mrs. Moralez is survived by her husband, Dan Moralez, of Craig; children Chris Moralez of Midland, Texas, and Melissa Moralez and Wes Moralez, both of Denver; father David Sullivan of Ignacio; sisters Peggy Rieke of Laramie, Wyo., Roxanne Gillenwater of Bayfield and Sherry Fruellal of Elizabeth; brother Chuck Sullivan of Ignacio; one granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held on Monday, March 20, 2006, at the First Christian Church in Craig. The Rev. Mervin Johnson officiated.

Alice Ferebee Shelley (3/19/2006)
Former Durango resident Alice Ferebee Shelley, 90, died on Sunday, March 5, 2006, at her home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
She was born on May 23, 1915, in Cypress, Ill.
Mrs. Ferebee Shelley was a career woman for the majority of her life, with experiences ranging from managing a naval-supply depot in the Virgin Islands during World War II to managing property in the Denver area before her retirement.
In addition to raising three children, she helped her husband, D.M. "Tex" Ferebee, in his oil and gas business in Durango. All three children graduated from Durango High School. Mr. Ferebee preceded her in death in 1964.
Mrs. Ferebee Shelley was widowed again in 1991, when her second husband, Ran C. Shelley, died.
She is survived by her sons, David M. Ferebee III of Northglenn and John E. Ferebee of Bedford, Texas; daughter Le Quinne Ferebee of Coconut Grove, Fla.; and two grandsons.
A private memorial service and celebration of her life was held in Broomfield on Saturday, March 18, 2006.

Haricleah 'Cleah' Greaves Chipman (3/18/2006)
Former Durango resident Haricleah "Cleah" Greaves Chipman, 85, died on Monday, March 13, 2006, in Salt Lake City. The cause of death was cancer.
The Chipman family lived in Durango from 1954 to 1963, which Mrs. Chipman called her "golden years." The family lived on Folsom Place and later in the only house at the time on the west side of Rio Vista Circle. At one point, the Chipmans had three children in Durango High School, one in Smiley Junior High and several in Riverview Elementary.
Mrs. Chipman was born to Harry G. and Sarah (Smith) Greaves in Snowflake, Ariz., on Nov. 4, 1920. Her name reflects her Greek heritage and means "strong and beautiful."
Mrs. Chipman was raised in Salt Lake City. She graduated from Granite High School in 1937 and from Brigham Young University in 1943.
She married E. Parker Chipman at the Salt Lake Temple in 1943. They lived in Marysville, Calif., where he was stationed during World War II, and then moved to American Fork, Utah, while Mr. Chipman finished college at BYU.
He got a job as a geologist with an oil company and was sent to the Hopi Indian Reservation in Oraibi, Ariz. The growing family later moved to the Navajo Indian Reservation in Kayenta, Ariz., and to Sidney, Neb., and Salt Lake City and Durango.
Mr. Chipman was killed in an automobile accident in 1975 while doing one of the things he most loved - rock hunting.
Mrs. Chipman worked at the University of Utah Medical Center emergency room until she retired in 1990.
She was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in the Primary, Relief Society, Young Women and Sunday School organizations.
Mrs. Chipman was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter Emma Snyder.
Mrs. Chipman is survived by her 10 children: Lynette Snyder of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Christine Chipman of Venice, Calif.; Stephen Chipman and Larry Chipman, both of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; Julynn Larson of Ogden, Utah; Kathleen Gerke of Orem, Utah; George Chipman of Farmington, Utah; Lee Chipman of West Valley, Utah; and William P. Chipman and Carol Thain, both of Sandy, Utah. She also is survived by sister Anne Snow of Provo, Utah; brothers Eldon Greaves of Salem, Ore., and Theodore Greaves of Salt Lake City; 26 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 18, 2006, at the Willow Creek First Ward, 2115 E. Sublette Place in Salt Lake City. The family will receive friends from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the church before the service.
Evlyn 'Evie' Atwater Bardeen (3/18/2006)
Dolores resident Evlyn "Evie" Atwater Bardeen died in a Denver hospital on Wednesday, March 8, 2006.
She was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., and lived in the Boston area for many years. Mrs. Bardeen graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts.
She was involved in secondary education and was the director of admissions at the Windsor School in Boston.
The Bardeen family spent many summers on the West Fork of the Dolores River. In the mid-1990s, Mrs. Bardeen moved to Colorado. She operated the Flying Pig Emporium in Dolores, and she was well known for the Persian rugs she carried.
Mrs. Bardeen continued her passion for education by serving on the boards of directors of the Telluride Mountain School and Southwest Open School in Cortez.
She is survived by a sister and three brothers as well as by her four children and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Southwest Open School, P.O. Drawer DD, Cortez, CO 81321.
Laura Dworkin (3/17/2006)
The mother of Durango residents Sophie Brill and Marvin Dworkin, Laura Dworkin, died in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday, March 7, 2006. She was 96.
Mrs. Dworkin was born in Pittsburgh to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hillelson on Aug. 25, 1909.
In 1937, she married Max Dworkin at Rockdale Temple in Cincinnati. Mrs. Dworkin worked in the family's business, Dworkin's Department Store, in London, Ohio.
Mrs. Dworkin was preceded in death by her husband, Max "Pops" Dworkin; and son Leon Dworkin.
She is survived by her daughters Sophie Brill of Durango, Barbara Scolnick of Los Angeles and Marlene Schwartz of Montgomery, Ohio; son Marvin Dworkin of Durango; sister Lil Block; brother Jim Hillelson; nine grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held on March 9, 2006, at The Wexner Heritage House in Columbus. Burial took place at the New Tifereth Israel Cemetery.
Eleanor 'Charline' Giacomelli (3/17/2006)
Former Durango resident Eleanor "Charline" Giacomelli, 84, died in Cottonwood, Ariz., on Sunday, March 12, 2006. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Many Durangoans may remember her from A & H Bootery, where she sold shoes for 27 years.
Mrs. Giacomelli was born to Charles Naples and Bernadine Monica Paul in Worcester, Mass., on July 27, 1921. As a child, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Myrtle and Will Spears, in Farmington. She also attended schools there.
Her family said that she would be remembered for "her constant, contagious smile; her unpredictable sense of humor; and her willingness to feed anyone who was hungry for food, "polenta" or for love."
No services are scheduled.
Mrs. Giacomelli was preceded in death by her son Michael Popovich.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Louis Giacomelli, of Cottonwood, Ariz.; son Jim Shock of Mendocino, Calif.; daughter Monica Giacomelli-Oldham of Silver City, N.M.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James Charles Townsend Jr. (3/17/2006)
Aztec native James Charles Townsend Jr., 75, died at Four Corners Good Samaritan Village on Wednesday, March 15, 2006. The cause of death was a stroke.
He was born to Ruth and James "Chic" Townsend Sr., on May 29, 1930. Mr. Townsend graduated from Aztec High School in 1948.
During his early years, he spent many summers helping his parents with their sheep ranching in the mountains near Silverton. In later years, it was a tradition to return there for family excursions.
Mr. Townsend served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was also stationed in England before being honorably discharged as a corporal in 1959.
In 1965, he married Victoria Milton in Aztec.
During the early 1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Townsend began ranching in Thompson Park and continued to develop their farming business in New Mexico. Mr. Townsend built several projects on the Colorado ranch that included recreational and fishing areas.
The family spent most summers in the La Plata Mountains.
Mr. Townsend made several summer trips to Anchorage, Alaska, and fulfilled a life dream of fishing for sockeye salmon there.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Victoria Townsend, of Aztec; daughters Cheryl Miller of Farmington and Charline Townsend of Houston; one granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 17, 2006, at Cope Memorial Chapel, 405 S. Main Ave. in Aztec.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2006, at the Aztec Cemetery.
