Donald Perry Timme (3/25/2006)
Forest Lakes resident Donald Perry Timme died at his home on Monday, March 20, 2006, after a battle with cancer. He was 69.
He was born to Leland and Madeline Timme on April 10, 1936, in Newport, Ken.
Mr. Timme served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He spent much of his military career as an aircraft-engine mechanic. During the last seven years of his service, Mr. Timme was in charge of the flight line at an Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas. He retired with the rank of technical sergeant.
On Sept. 21, 1963, he married Jeannie Ammerman in Kentucky.
Mr. Timme was a volunteer firefighter with the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District and was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He also served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Bayfield.
He enjoyed sailing, fishing and traveling.
Mr. Timme is survived by his wife, Jeannie Timme, of Bayfield; brother, Jack Timme, of Phoenix; son, Perry Timme, of Farmington; daughter, Julie Allison, of Fort Collins; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Timme's body has been donated to Science Care for research and education. His cremated remains will be returned to his wife.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the Bayfield High School Gymnasium.

Thomas O. Richmond (3/25/2006)
Former Ignacio resident Thomas O. Richmond, 63, died Monday, March 6, 2006, in Odessa, Texas. The cause of death was heart failure.
Mr. Richmond was born to Rex and Vivian (Stout) Richmond in Dexter, N.M., on Oct. 23, 1942. The Richmond family moved to Ignacio in 1945, and Mr. Richmond graduated from Ignacio High School in 1961.
He attended the Northwest School of Heavy Equipment in 1963 and completed the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Mont., in March 1988. Mr. Richmond was self-employed in the fields of heavy equipment operation, trucking and auctioneering.
He married Corrine "Pinky" Nelson in Janesville, Wis., on Aug. 31, 1980.
Mr. Richmond is survived by his wife, Corrine Richmond, of Mesa, Ariz.; children Ollene Nevels of Tennessee, Ty Richmond of Higby, Ariz., and Rexann Wesner of Colorado; brothers Jim Richmond of Ignacio and Jerry Richmond of Prescott, Ariz.; sister June Ingle of Universal City, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and one nephew.
Services were held on Monday, March 13, 2006, in Janesville, Wis. Burial took place in Milton Lawn Memorial Park in Janesville.
A gathering to celebrate Mr. Richmond's life will be held during the summer in Ignacio.
William Phillip Amon (3/24/2006)
Bayfield native William Phillip Amon died at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington on Monday, March 20, 2006. The cause of death was complications from renal failure.
Mr. Amon was born to Ora and Ona Amon in Bayfield on Jan. 13, 1926. He enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately after graduating from Bayfield High School in 1944 and served until 1946 during World War II. Mr. Amon fought in the Pacific theater.
He returned from the war and lived in Bayfield before settling in Flora Vista, N.M. He was a retired member of the Local Asbestos Workers No. 76.
Mr. Amon married Blanche Martha "Sally" McConnell in New Mexico during the early 1950s. The marriage later ended in divorce.
His family said that he will be missed as a beloved father and grandfather.
Mr. Amon is survived by his sons Owen Amon and Norman T. McConnell, both of Flora Vista, N.M.; daughter Linda Cassell of Washington; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 pm. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Earl Caudill of Hospice of Mercy will officiate. Burial will take place at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.
Eleanor Ann Carver (3/24/2006)
Durango resident Eleanor Ann Carver, 78, died at Mercy Medical Center on Monday, March 20, 2006. The cause of death was complications from Alzheimer's disease.
She and her husband had moved to Durango in 1996 to enjoy outdoor adventures with their sons, Bill Carver and Jim Carver of Carver Brewing Co. While here, Mrs. Carver was instrumental in the development of the TLC Department at Mercy Medical Center and volunteered there.
Mrs. Carver was born in Detroit to Walter and Nola Walsh Dunne on July 2, 1927. She was the second oldest of 10 children.
She attended Gesu Elementary School and Immaculate High School in Detroit before earning her nursing diploma from Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. Mrs. Carver later earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing education from Mercy College in Detroit.
On June 25, 1955, she married Gerford "Red" Carver at Gesu Church in Detroit. She was a city girl, and he was a farm boy, but their family said they had great respect and admiration for each other.
Together they raised six children. Their children said that each one of them was encouraged to express their own uniqueness and explore the beauty of the world. The Carvers raised their family primarily in Whitefish Bay, Wis., a suburb of Milwaukee.
Mrs. Carver worked at a variety of places during her nursing career. Her favorite job was teaching at the Columbia School of Nursing in Detroit. Her daughter Sara Carver followed in her footsteps and is a nurse manager in Durango.
Mrs. Carver's greatest sorrow was losing her eldest son, John, while he was doing what he loved - flying a Harrier jet in a pilot-exchange program between the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Air Force in 1987.
Mrs. Carver's father was in charge of the Wayne County, Mich., welfare department. Because of that, her family said, "A defining attribute of the Dunne family was that every person deserved a sense of dignity, no matter what race, religion or level of social status. Eleanor lived by her family's golden rule in everything that she did."
Her husband said that Mrs. Carver liked to take early morning walks along Lake Michigan when they lived in Wisconsin, and enjoyed reading.
Mrs. Carver is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Gerford Carver, of Durango; sons Jim Carver and Bill Carver, both of Durango; daughters Sara Carver of Durango, Meg Carver of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Beth Kramer of Littleton; and 14 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road. The Rev. Stephanie Spear will officiate. A reception at Bill Carver's home will immediately follow the service.

Bertha Lee Hammett (3/23/2006)
Durango resident Bertha Lee Hammett, 82, died at her home on Wednesday, March 22, 2006. The cause of death was throat cancer.
She had moved to the area about six years ago because of health reasons.
Mrs. Hammett was born to Walter and Nettie Green in Roswell, N.M., on March 27, 1923. When she was 3-months-old, she and her mother were kidnapped by another family and taken to Kerr County near Kerrville, Texas. Her mother died when Mrs. Hammett was nine. It wasn't until she was 17 that Mrs. Hammett finally reconnected with her father when she escaped her captors.
Mrs. Hammett married and ranched in Kerr County for 15 years. After moving to El Paso, Texas, during the late 1950s, she worked as a seamstress. In 1966, she moved to Carlsbad, N.M., where she was a cook in the local hospital.
After she married Morris Hammett in Carlsbad during the late 1960s, the couple moved back to El Paso in the 1970s. Mr. Hammett preceded her in death in 1975.
Mrs. Hammett enjoyed animals and gardening. Her family said she had a green thumb. She also loved to spend time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her second husband, Morris Hammett, Mrs. Hammett was preceded in death by her sons James Lueders and Billy Earl Lueders.
She is survived by her son Walter Lueders of Bayfield; daughters Sharon Kaber of Durango and Melba Hughes of Livingston, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild who was born the day after her death.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield. The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate.
James William Cole (3/23/2006)
Longtime area rancher James William Cole died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Saturday, March 18, 2006. He was 87.
He was born in Oak Creek in Routt County to Alfred and Katherine (Stocker) Cole on June 27, 1918. Mr. Cole graduated from Steamboat Springs High School and attended Colorado State University.
He joined the Air Force during World War II and was a staff sergeant in charge of radar repairs with the 97th Bomb Group 340 Bomb Squadron. Mr. Cole was stationed in Italy during the war.
He married Ruth Ellen Neel in Durango on Dec. 20, 1947. The Cole family moved to La Plata County around 1950.
Mr. Cole served on the Florida Mesa School Board, was a member of the Florida Farmers Ditch Co. for 48 years and a charter member of the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's Association for 55 years. He was nominated to be La Plata Cattleman of the Year in 1976.
He had been a state rodeo champion in bronco riding in college, and his family said there wasn't a horse he couldn't ride.
Mr. Cole lived on the Cole Ranch for 56 years and died after a short illness. His family said he was thinking about his cattle and calves to the end.
"He loved cows," his wife, Ruth Cole, said, "and in the winter, the Denver Broncos."
Mr. Cole was preceded in death by his granddaughter Cristin Cole.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Cole, of Durango; sisters Katherine Cole and Ruth Hunt, both of California; children James G. Cole of Lakin, Kan., Raymond E. Cole of Fort Collins, and Barbara Morgan and J. Roger Cole, both of Durango; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Randy Clark will officiate. Burial will take place at the Florida Cemetery in Durango.
Gilbert Daniel Benavidez (3/23/2006)
Former Durango resident Gilbert Daniel Benavidez, 69, died on Friday, March 17, 2006, at Roseville Kaiser Hospital in Roseville, Calif. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Benavidez was born to Terasina and Alfredo Benavidez in Lumberton, N.M., on April 19, 1936. He grew up in Durango.
As a young man, he served for 14 years in the Army. At the time of his discharge, he held the rank of staff sergeant.
Mr. Benavidez lived in North Highlands, Calif., for 39 years. He worked as a mechanic at Sears for 25 years. He attended St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where he was active with the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Benavidez was a past president of North Highlands Little League and coached for many years. He led teams to the District 6 Championships and to many more titles.
His family said he was known as "Mr. B" and the guy who waived to everyone. They said he was a supportive husband and father and a good friend.
Mr. Benavidez is survived by his wife of 45 years, Tommie Benavidez, of Roseville, Calif.; children Mark Benavidez and Gilly Benavidez, both of Roseville, and Kim Benavidez-Judge of Antelope, Calif.; sister Cecelia Benavidez of Aztec; brothers Louie Benavidez of Sacramento, Calif., and Jimmie Benavidez, Rudy Benavidez and Aaron Benavidez, all of Ignacio; eight grandchildren; and many more family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. today, March 23, 2006, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in North Highlands, Calif. A reception hosted by the Knights of Columbus will follow the graveside service.

Marieta May Milligan (3/23/2006)
Lifelong Cortez resident Marieta May Milligan, 76, died at her home on Tuesday, March 21, 2006. The cause of death was not disclosed.
She was born to Hubert William and Jennie Elizabeth (Highland) Samson in Cortez on April 24, 1929. She graduated from Cortez High School in 1947, and on June 7 of that same year, she married Frank Milford Milligan.
Mrs. Milligan was an employee of Cortez Laundry and Cleaners for 27 years before she retired in 1992.
She was a member of the 40's Bunch and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When she wasn't at work or attending church and social gatherings, Mrs. Milligan enjoyed crocheting, bowling, listening to music, going for rides in the mountains, playing cards and, most of all, time spent with her family.
Mrs. Milligan was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Milligan.
She is survived by her children Mildred Dunlap of Benson, Ariz., Marsha Buck and Daniel Milligan, both of Bloomfield, N.M., Debbie Exon of Amarillo, Texas, and Sandra LeBlanc and Marilyn Lee, both of Cortez; siblings Eurma Batchelor of Durango, Huberta Parsons and Verna Louderback, both of Aztec; Laura McCall of Gallup, N.M.; and Charles Samson of Farmington; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Empire Chapel. Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Bishop David Mortenson will officiate.
