Isabelle H. Binger (2/9/2006)
Hesperus native Isabelle H. Binger died at Cedar Ridge Inn in Farmington on Monday, Feb. 6, 2006. She was 91.
She was born to Martin and Mary Hotter in Hesperus on Jan. 5, 1915. Mrs. Binger was raised in the Hay Gulch area and attended the Hesperus School through the ninth grade.
In 1935, she married Stanley Mason in Aztec. After his death, she married Bill Binger in Durango in 1974.
Mrs. Binger spent almost all of her life in La Plata County. While she was living on a ranch in the western part of the county, she was a member of the Breen Grange and several of its offshoots, including the Grannies.
When her son Jerry Mason contracted polio in the 1950s, Mrs. Binger made numerous trips to Denver with him for treatment.
Both of her parents had immigrated to the United States from Austria. In 1970, Mrs. Binger made a trip to Austria to see her relatives and visit their native land. In her later years, when she was living in Durango, Mrs. Binger attended many activities at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center.
Mrs. Binger is survived by her sons Roy Mason, Jerry Mason and John Mason, all of Farmington; daughter Betty McConnel of Clovis, N.M.; stepdaughter Donna Flora of Farmington; stepsons Dennis Binger of Aztec and William Binger of Durango; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Hood Mortuary. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at the Hood Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. James Koenigsfeld of St. Columba Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenmount, Cemetery.
Floyd L. Gibble (2/8/2006)
Durango resident Floyd Leroy Gibble died on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006. He was 91.
Mr. Gibble was born to Phares M. and Minnie Mae Gibble in Pratt County, Kan., on Sept. 5, 1914.
He graduated from Wichita Business College in 1935 and moved to Denver in 1939. He married Lucille V. Glaze there on Dec. 7, 1940.
After a short stint in the U.S. Army, Mr. Gibble received a medical discharge and went to work for a drapery company.
In 1952, the Gibbles moved to Durango, where they started Columbine Sales & Service, a drapery and home-decorating business. After selling the business in 1963, Mr. Gibble began working for the state of Colorado as the district court administrator of the 4th Judicial District. He retired in 1982.
Mr. Gibble was an avid golfer and a member of the Hillcrest Golf Club for 53 years. He kept the handicaps for the club and worked as a starter for the Navajo Trail Tournament for many years. In 2005, he was given an award of appreciation for his dedication to the Navajo Trail Open and the Hillcrest Junior Golf Foundation.
Mr. Gibble also was a bowler and won many tournaments and trophies.
He was preceded in death by his son Stanley Gibble in 1977.
Mr. Gibble is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille Gibble, of Durango; son Dennis Gibble of Durango; daughter, Linda Mrazek, of Yuma, Ariz.; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at a later date when his ashes will be buried in the family plot at Greenmount.

Ellen Day (2/8/2006)
Former Durango resident Ellen Day, 62, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, in Longmont. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Day was formerly married to Daniel Day of Durango and lived here from 1973 to 1989. While in Durango, she worked for the La Plata County Sheriff's Office and volunteered for Civitan both here and in her hometown of Tacoma, Wash.
She was born to Robert Henry and Anna Louise (Egyed) Eldred in Tacoma on March 3, 1943. After graduating from Puyallup High School in Puyallup, Wash., in 1961, Mrs. Day went on to earn degrees in English and theology from Ambassador College in Pasadena, Calif.
She had worked for the Washington State Patrol and was employed by Stoller Environmental in Lafayette at the time of her death. Mrs. Day volunteered with the Respite Care Program of Boulder County Aging Services in Longmont.
She enjoyed gardening and reading Louis L'Amour books. Her family said she would be remembered as a wonderful mom and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. Day was preceded in death by her daughter Karla Day in 1987.
She is survived by her daughters Marie Preitauer and Rachel Day, both of Longmont, and Kim Wiggins of Berthoud; mother Anna Louise Eldred of Tacoma, Wash.; sisters Veda Fisher of Severn, Md., and Jeanne White of Tacoma; and five grandchildren.
A memorial gathering and celebration of Mrs. Day's life will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com.

Vernon J. 'Curly' Whitver (2/6/2006)
Vernon J. "Curly" Whitver died of natural causes Feb. 1, 2006, in Loveland. He was 89.
Known to his friends and family as Curly, Mr. Whitver was born Dec. 17, 1916, in Amboy, Ill., to Joseph Edgar and Ida Mary Whitver.
The senior class president, Mr. Whitver graduated from Amboy Township High School in 1934. Two years later, he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to CV-1 USS Langley - a ship that searched for Amelia Earhart.
He served in the Navy during World War II and retired as a lieutenant commander.
After military retirement, Mr. Whitver settled in Durango where he worked for The Durango Herald and Vanadium Mining Corp., and tended bar at the Grand Palace.
Mr. Whitver served as commander of the American Legion post and member of the Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps.
In 1967, Mr. Whitver married Karen J. Hays and became a father to her three young children. In 1970, the couple had a daughter of their own. Soon after, they moved to Fort Collins, where Mr. Whitver worked at the physical plant at Colorado State University.
He retired in 1984, but could not stay idle for long. He took a job with Heinrich's Door Company for a few years.
Mr. Whitver enjoyed hiking in Lory State Park, looking for arrowheads and other artifacts. He was fond of gardening, photography, brewing his own beer and wine and watching M*A*S*H reruns.
He was a 32nd degree Master Mason through the Illinois Central Lodge No. 178.
Mr. Whitver is survived by daughter Lara Sealander of Fort Collins and sister Norma Biedenharn of Fort Collins.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 6, at Bohlender Funeral Home in Fort Collins.
Susie Ann Mailheau (2/5/2006)
Durango resident Susie Ann Mailheau, 71, died in Denver on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006. The cause of death was complications from surgery.
Mrs. Mailheau was born in San Diego to Hobart and Gladys Butcher on Sept. 17, 1934.
She married Theodore Mailheau. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Mrs. Mailheau moved to Durango in 1977. She worked for Community Connections as a coordinator for about 12 years, helping developmentally disabled people interact in the community. She was also a long-term volunteer for Alternative Horizons.
Mrs. Mailheau, an avid reader, enjoyed arts and crafts. She was also an animal lover.
"She was an extremely generous, supportive woman, with a gifted sense of humor," her daughter Teran Schlittgen said.
Mrs. Mailheau is survived by her son, Michael Mailheau, of San Diego; daughters Teran Schlittgen of Durango and Tamara Bennett of Colorado Springs; and two grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at the Fort Lewis College Chapel. A reception will follow at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Wanda Jean Toole (2/5/2006)
Durango resident Wanda Jean Toole, 67, died at the home of her daughter, Sherry O'Toole, on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006. The cause of death was ovarian cancer.
She was born in Lapeer, Mich., in 1938.
On Nov. 30, 1957, she married Wesley Toole in Angola, Ind. In 1969, the Toole family moved to Kalkaska, Mich. After two decades in Michigan the Tooles moved to Phoenix, and in 2000 to Farmington to be closer to their daughter.
After retirement in 2001, Mr. and Mrs. Toole began touring the United States in their recreation vehicle. She enjoyed camping and crafts, but most of all spending time with her family and friends.
"Wanda has touched all she has met," her family said, "and we have gained strength from the footprints she has left on our hearts."
Mrs. Toole was preceded in death by her son, Randy Toole.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Wesley Toole, of Durango; daughter Sherry O'Toole of Durango; sisters Ivena Marsh and Onalee Starr, both of Lapeer, Mich.; brother Harold Conant of Pawpaw, Mich.; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
There will be a celebration of Mrs. Toole's life in June in Lapeer, Mich., where the majority of her family lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Dorothy E. Douglass (2/2/2006)
A recent resident of Durango, Dorothy E. Douglass, 95, died at Mercy Medical Center on Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.
Mrs. Douglass was born to Octavus and Allie Eaves in St. Louis, Mo., on May 27, 1910. She was raised in Dallas and spent most of her life in Shreveport, La.
She married Richard Ellis Douglass in 1932. She worked with Mr. Douglass in his insurance office. Mrs. Douglass moved to Durango in 2004 to be close to family.
She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Shreveport and an officer in Sunday school. Mrs. Douglass did a lot of volunteer work at The Glen Nursing Home in Shreveport.
Mrs. Douglass was an avid seamstress and made clothes for herself and her grandchildren. She traveled extensively, including all over the United States, Europe and China.
Mrs. Douglass was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Douglass.
She is survived by her sons Richard "Scott" Douglass of Durango and Don Douglass of Jamestown, N.C.; sister Merle Barnett of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Evelyn Lois Shubert (2/2/2006)
Durango resident Evelyn Lois Shubert, 88, died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Monday, Jan. 30, 2006. The cause of death was pneumonia.
She was born to Charles and Phoebe Perkins in Franklin, Ohio, on Aug. 25, 1917. Mrs. Shubert graduated from high school in 1934.
She married Edwin Clifford Meeker in Dayton, Ohio on Dec. 7, 1941 and was later widowed.
She moved to Durango in 1979 and married Orval Shubert here in June 1980. Mrs. Shubert worked as an accountant while living in Dayton, Ohio.
She was active in the Elks Lodge, the Jerry Lewis Telethon and Veterans of Foreign Wars, particularly with the Blue Star Moms. She served as the president of the women's side of several of these organizations.
She was an avid fisherwoman and loved the mountains. Her family said she will be remembered as a loving daughter, wife and mother.
Mrs. Shubert was preceded in death by her husbands Charles Meeker and Orval Shubert.
She is survived by her daughter Phoebe "Pam" Richardson of Durango; son Charles Meeker of Hamlet, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service with burial of the ashes will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at Greenmount Cemetery.
