Harley E. Walton
Harley E. Walton died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Reno, Nev., after an extended illness. He was 79.
Mr. Walton was born July 20, 1925, in Hammond, Ind., and moved to Mancos in 1935 and lived there many years.
While serving with the Marine Corps 4th Division during World War II, he fought in the Pacific in the battles for Iwo Jima, Tinian and Saipan. He received a Purple Heart after he was wounded in Saipan.
Mr. Walton owned a cabinet shop in Telluride before he moved to Nevada.
Survivors include his wife Carol M. of Sparks, Nev.; daughters Eunice Halls of Mancos and Kim Lipe of Cortez; and son Scott Walton of Mancos; sister Virginia Crangle of Hesperus; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in July at Greenmount Cemetery.
Carol A. Wise
Carol A. Wise, 67, died Thursday, May 19, 2005.
She was born Dec. 1, 1937, in Rochester, N.Y., to Harold and Annette (Metzinger) Leary.
Before retiring from Ampex Corp., Mrs. Wise served in the Women's Army Corps and was a homemaker. After, she worked as a child-care provider and owned a restaurant in Bayfield until she closed it after becoming too ill from cancer.
Mrs. Wise enjoyed four-wheeling in the mountains near Silverton. She loved nothing more than to spend all her free time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, William Wise of Ignacio; Daniel Wise of Milwaukee, Wis.; Steven Wise of Durango; and Eleanor Hawkins of Colorado Springs; siblings Vivian Leary-Vanderzell and Harold Leary Jr.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in Colorado Springs, and inurnment will take place in New York at a later date. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation (www.pikespeakhos pice.org).
Robert H. Colley
Robert H Colley, 95, died Friday, June 3, 2005, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango.
Mr. Colley was born Oct. 18, 1909, in Oxnard, Calif., the son of William Albert and Marquerite H. Perkins Colley.
On June 24, 1941, he married Lucy McRae and later moved to Durango in 1948.
Mr. Colley served as the business manager for Fort Lewis College when it was founded in Hesperus.
He later was the owner-operator of Colley Real Estate. Mr. Colley enjoyed painting, hunting, fishing, playing his guitar and listening to music.
Survivors include his three daughters, Nancy Wyatt of Linden, Va.; Annie Morning Star of Albuquerque; and Susan Oleskevich of Durango; and his five grandsons.
A private family memorial service will be held following cremation by Hood Mortuary.
Elizabeth Ann (Betty) McLaughlin
Elizabeth Ann (Betty) McLaughlin died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 82. The cause of death was not given.
Mrs. McLaughlin was born March 2, 1923, in Spragueville, Iowa, to Daniel and Loretta Driscoll. She graduated from Preston High School in 1941 and attended Scoville Business Schools in Clinton, Iowa.
She worked for Schick Hospital in Clinton and for Dr. Minard Murray in Durango. She also was a telephone operator for Mountain Bell in Durango.
She married Fred McLaughlin on Nov. 20, 1946, in Durango. The couple owned and operated a feed mill for several years.
She loved gardening and growing flowers and being with grandsons Jeff and John Kyle of Grand Junction.
Mrs. McLaughlin is survived by daughters Maggie Kyle of Grand Junction and Mary Jo Wickman of Hollywood, Fla.; sister Phebe Neumann of Preston, Iowa; her two grandsons and a great-grandson. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, six brothers and five sisters.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Columba Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Koenigsfeld officiating. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary.

Sean Patrick Wetmore
Sean Patrick Wetmore died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at his home in Elko, Nev. He was 35. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Wetmore was born Aug. 6, 1969, in Fairplay to Dennis and Sharon (Ray) Wetmore.
Mr. Wetmore lived in several states during his youth and graduated from high school in Oklahoma. He worked for an oil company there and later moved to Alaska. Mr. Wetmore earned his private pilot's license and dreamed of flying tourists to remote areas in Alaska.
Mr. Wetmore was active in Alcoholics Anonymous until he moved to Nevada. He made many friends through the organization. He was an avid outdoorsman, fishing, hunting and four-wheeling.
Mr. Wetmore is survived by his father and mother of Durango; sons Sean Wetmore and Aaron Wetmore, both of Ponca City, Okla.; brothers Jim Brink of Aurora and Denny Wetmore of Durango; sister Shannon Nelson of Durango; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He also is survived by his grandmother Norma Ray of Golden.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist church, 332 E. 11th St. in Durango. The Rev. Jeff Dobesh with the First Baptist Church will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary.
Evelyn L. Quillen
A former longtime resident of Durango, Evelyn L. Quillen, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at the age of 90.
She was born in Kansas on Sept. 29, 1914, to Walter and Alma Sjorgen.
People at the Good Samaritan Village remember her for her love of singing.
Her family said she was a loving wife and mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Quillen.
Survivors include her son Dennis Quillen of Farmington; a grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Good Samaritan Village, 500 Care Lane in Aztec. Jack Wheat will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
John Eugene Black
An Aztec resident, John Eugene Black, 74, died Monday, May 20, 2005, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.
He was born June 24, 1930, in Perryton, Texas, to James and Minnie Black.
A retired school teacher, Mr. Black had taught at Aztec High School and San Juan College. His former students recall Mr. Black referred to them as "his kids."
He enjoyed many hobbies, and visiting with family and friends. He was a Lions Club member and had been involved with the Aztec Museum.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Eva Black.
Survivors include his son, Fred; two grandchildren; brothers William Black of Durango and Jerald Black of Higgins, Texas.
Viewing will be from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cope Memorial Chapel in Aztec. A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Aztec. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Blonski as celebrant. Mr. Black will be buried at the Aztec Community Cemetery.

Renee Jacqueline 'Jackie' Howsey
Renee Jacqueline "Jackie" Howsey died from a brain tumor on Monday, May 30, 2005, at age 52.
She was born on May 30, 1953, to Richard and Elsie Regnier.
Mrs. Howsey lived by the motto: "We are here to learn how to love and then teach what we've learned to others."
Survivors include her husband Robert Howsey, of Durango; daughter Chris Ross, sons Scott Ross and Ryan Valder, all of Durango; father Richard Regnier, of Gold Hill; brothers Rick Regnier, of Phoenix, Russell Regnier of Odessa, Texas, and Ronald Regnier of Oklahoma.
Memorial services will be held beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Lewis Chapel. A reception will follow at Mrs. Howsey's house. All friends are welcome. Please don't wear black. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Vitale Theraputics, 3205 Arizona NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
Deborah J. Cooney
Deborah J. Cooney (Wommack) died from complications from brain surgery Wednesday, June 1, 2005, in Farmington at the Cedar Ridge Inn. She was 54.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1950 to Betty Wommack.
On Dec. 24, 1970, she married Tim Cooney in Houston, Texas.
She was her husband's partner in their business, The Cooney Group. Mrs. Cooney was a board member of Sexual Assault Services Organization, formally known as the Rape Intervention Team and was a former director of the DAAR.
An accomplished pianist, she loved American Indian art, golf, and learning new things. She also enjoyed traveling especially to Las Vegas. She enjoyed spoiling her nieces and nephews.
Survivors include her husband; her mother Betty Wommack of Sun City, Ariz.; brothers Robert Wommack of Houston and Greg Wommack of St. Louis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
No services will be held.

Channing E. Wilson Sr.
Channing E. Wilson Sr., 80, died of cancer Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at his home in Durango.
Mr. Wilson was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Nucla, the son of Joe A. and Ila Mae (Patterson) Wilson.
After growing up in the Durango area, he married Maxine Giacomelli in 1949, also in Durango. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a courier and received a medal for action in the Battle of the Bulge.
For 32 years, he was a senior maintenance man for the Colorado Highway Department.
A charter member of the Durango Barbershoppers, Mr. Wilson was a skilled craftsman in woodworking and toll painting. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and the outdoors.
Survivors include his son Channing Wilson, Jr. of Durango; son Gerald Wilson of Pueblo; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Dick Wilson of Showlow, Ariz.; sister Muriel Godeau of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Greenmount Cemetery, at 2 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Buddy Tulk will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Jerry Don Stovall
Jerry Don Stovall, 68, of Sycamore, Ill., formerly of Castle Rock, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at his home.
Mr. Stovall was born on June 26, 1936, in Arbyrd, Mo., the son of Myrl A. and Ruby B. (Hurt) Stovall.
During his teenage and early adult years, he lived in Sydney, Neb. From 1956 until 1958, he served in the U.S. Navy. Later he worked for the Colorado Highway Department as a highway engineer.
Mr. Stovall was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He was a leather craftsman. His favorite author was Louis L'Amour.
In November 2000, he moved to Sycamore.
Private visitation will be held today at Anderson's Funeral Home in DeKalb, Ill. Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Castle Rock. Honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his daughters Marsha Stovall of Denver; Martha Davis of Bayfield; Mia Stovall of Durango; Michelle Koen of Colorado; four grandchildren; mother Ruby B. Stovall of Sycamore; sister Joy Bottger of Roach, Mo.; and brother Dan B. Stovall of Sycamore.
