Edna Shoshone Hood
Edna Shoshone Hood, 96, died Monday, May 9, 2005, at her home in Ignacio.
Mrs. Hood was born Feb. 22, 1909, in Ignacio, the daughter of Mae Shoshone Gunn.
On June 17, 1935, she married George Emerson Hood in Albuquerque.
Mrs. Hood graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing. She became a registered nurse and worked at the Albuquerque Indian Hospital, the Taylor Hospital in Ignacio and the Indian Health Center in Ignacio. She retired in 1955.
In 1972, she was awarded a certificate of merit by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. After her nursing career, she worked at the tribal jail, cooking meals for the inmates. She served on the Tribal Council in the early 1970s.
Survivors include her son Orville Hood of Durango; daughters Lorraine Duran of Ignacio and Joyce Duran of Ignacio; and eight grandchildren, including Tom Duran of Bayfield and Rudy Duran Jr. of Ignacio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1996.
A rosary will be said in conjunction with a visitation at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. The Monsignor Daniel Huber with St. Ignatius Catholic Church will officiate.
Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.
Christine Jean Gomez
After a long illness, Christine Jean Gomez died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at her home in Ignacio with her family present. She was 65.
Mrs. Gomez was born Aug. 25, 1939, in Ignacio, the daughter of Curtis and Belle Cuthair.
She attended school at the Ute Vocational School, and when it closed she transferred to Ignacio High School, where she graduated.
On Oct. 21, 1960, she married Joe Gomez.
She worked at the Southern Ute Headstart for several years, but was later forced to quit because of health problems.
Mrs. Gomez spent her time enjoying her husband, children and grandchildren. Mrs. Gomez was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; daughter Jo Ann Gomez, and son Anthony Gomez, both from Ignacio; four grandchildren, Julian Garcia, Jamie Garcia, Kiana Thompson and Leanne Weaver, all of Ignacio; sisters Mary Ann Scott of Durango, Garnet Olguin of Ignacio, Vera Sage of Ignacio and Darlene Garcia of Ignacio; and brothers Delbert Cuthair of Ignacio and Larry Cuthair of Glendale, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Gomez.
Visitation will be at from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. A rosary will be said at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church and burial will follow at Rosa Cemetery in Arboles.
Margarete Elaine Swilling
Margarete Elaine Swilling, a longtime resident of Durango, died Friday, May 6, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 84.
Mrs. Swilling was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Peyton to Mathew and Mabel Bigham. She was raised in Bayfield.
She attended old Fort Lewis College in Hesperus and received a nursing degree in Colorado Springs. She married George Milton "Jack" Swilling on Sept. 4, 1943, in Denver.
In 1961, after Mr. Swilling was discharged from the Navy, the Swillings moved to Durango.
Mrs. Swilling worked as a registered nurse most of her life, including 13 years at Mercy Medical Center.
Mrs. Swilling is survived by her husband, who lives in Durango; daughter Patricia Everett of Pagosa Springs and son Michael Swilling of Durango. She also is survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Durango Christian Church, with the Revs. Larry Osborne and Jonathan Alsdorf officiating. Burial was at Crestview Cemetery.

Dorothy A. Shore
Dorothy Annette Shore died on Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Comforts of Home Assisted Living Facility in Baldwin, Wis. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Shore was born on Nov. 23, 1914, in Beaver County, Okla., the daughter of John X. and Annetta (Yoder) Smith. She graduated from high school in Greeno, Okla. She married Vern Ellis Shore on Jan. 17, 1933, in Guyman, Okla. They lived for a brief time in Denver before beginning a dairy and wheat farm in Redmesa in the early 1940s. After selling the farm in 1961, they moved to Durango.
The Shores were religious, and they were active in the ministries of First Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, the Rev. Verle Shore of Ogden, Utah; Jaxine Blake of Albuquerque; the Rev. Mark Shore of Hudson, Wis., and Bonnie Blanka of North Richland Hills, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and sister Elsie Schmitt of Hesperus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern and infant daughter, Verna Rae.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Mountain View Baptist Church in Kline. A viewing will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. The burial will be at Marvel Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
Donna Maxine Becker
Donna Maxine Becker died at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos on Thursday, May 5, 2005. She was 64.
She was born to Emerald and Grace (Anderson) Patrick in Redlands, Calif., on Sept. 27, 1941.
She married Robert Becker in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 8, 1964. They were married for 41 years. Mr. and Mrs. Becker lived for 17 years in Tucson, where they owned a trenching business. They moved back home to Colorado in 1982, living in Ignacio and Vallecito Lake until they moved to Mancos in 1988.
Mrs. Becker enjoyed occupying her time with arts and crafts, especially ceramics.
Mrs. Becker is survived by her husband, Robert Becker of Mancos; two sons, Kirk Becker of Allison and Bryan Becker of Covina, Calif.; three grandchildren, Brandyn Becker, Natacia Becker and Garret Becker; sister Patricia Trease of Durango; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Olympia Marie Sanchez
Olympia Marie Sanchez died Friday, May 6, 2005, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 96.
Mrs. Sanchez was born Nov. 20, 1908, in Durango, the daughter of Hipolito and Feliciana (Ortiz) Roybal.
She was the eldest of 14 siblings and graduated from Durango High School in 1926. She lived her entire life in Durango and married Joseph F. Sanchez at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 1928.
Mrs. Sanchez worked several different jobs including a 16-year career at Woolworth's department store. She was a parish member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and working in her rose garden.
Survivors include her daughter Vangie Sanchez of Durango; two grandsons, Joe Burrell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla, and Bill Burrell of Durango; sisters Celina Marquez of Durango, and Genevieve Quintana of Albuquerque; brothers Dale Roybal and Victor Roybal of Durango; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jose F. Sanchez and her grandson Rodney Burrell.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary. Recitation of the Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Joseph L. Gallegos of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Syble A. Cook
Syble A. Cook, a resident of Bayfield, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 81.
Mrs. Cook was born Jan. 4, 1924, in San Augustine, Texas, to Riley Macagie and Jennett (Sanders) O'Neil. She graduated from the Friendship High School in Wolfworth, Texas.
On Jan. 17, 1948, she married William Louis Cook in San Angelo, Texas. The family moved to Bayfield 15 years ago.
Mrs. Cook ranched with her family most of her married life. She was an excellent cook, preparing large meals for the cowboys and guests.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bill Cook of Bayfield; a son, Billy Cook of Ignacio; and two grandchildren.
Cremation will take place. No services are planned at this time.
Kendall 'Kenny' Ray Alexander
A longtime Durango resident who fought in World War II, Kendall "Kenny" Ray Alexander, 78, died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at his home.
Mr. Alexander was born May 24, 1927, in Mayfield, Okla., to William J. "Bill" Alexander and Effie Mae (Davis) Alexander. He was the eldest of six children.
He married Rosana Archuleta on April 25, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango. Mr. Alexander was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1945. He served in the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged in 1947.
He worked as a mechanic and welder for Burnett Construction Co. until his retirement in 1993.
Mr. Alexander loved to be outside and repair anything he found broken. "He could fix anything," said his daughter, Teresa Valdez.
Mr. Alexander enjoyed helping others and if anyone needed his help, he made sure to drop what he was doing to help them.
In his early years, Mr. Alexander enjoyed big-game hunting. Most importantly, he loved his family.
Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Rosana; his son, David Alexander of Durango; his daughter, Teresa Valdez of Ridgecrest, Calif.; his sister, Ruth Robbins of Bloomfield; two brothers, Ed Alexander of Bloomfield and Richard Alexander of Farmington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Raye Alexander, in 1984.
Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary. A rosary will be said at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate.
Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.
Scott David Hyslop
A memorial service will be held Tuesday for Durango Fire & Rescue Authority firefighter and paramedic Scott David Hyslop, 33, who died Thursday, June 30, 2005, near Mancos in a helicopter crash.
Mr. Hyslop was born Sept. 22, 1971, in Denver, the son of David and Mary Sue Hyslop. He married Elizabeth Ceilley on Dec. 28, 1996, in Des Moines, Iowa.
An avid climber, skier, mountain biker and hiker, Mr. Hyslop had a great love of the outdoors. He devoted his life to helping others in times of need and also was an inspiration to those living with cystic fibrosis.
"We're going to miss him, his personality, his smile, his jokes," said Dave Abercrombie, spokesman for Durango Fire & Rescue Authority. "It leaves a real void in the department."
Mr. Hyslop is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ceilley Hyslop of Durango and their son, 5-month-old Dylan Hyslop of Durango. Mr. Hyslop is also survived by his parents, Mary Sue and David Hyslop of Centennial, his brother and sister-in-law, Rob and Laurel Hyslop of Evergreen, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and an aunt.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the meadow north of Turtle Lake on County Road 205. Chaplains Diana McKenna and Ken Downey of Mercy Medical Center will officiate.
A community memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday at the Durango High School football field. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary in Durango.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Scott Hyslop Memorial Fund, care of Vectra Bank, 1101 East Second Ave., Durango. Funds will be distributed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and other causes important to Mr. Hyslop.
