Lucian F. Squires

A resident of La Plata County, Lucian F. Squires died Tuesday, March 29, 2005.

Mr. Squires was born August 9, 1911, in Ekron, Ky., the eldest son of Bertha Powell Squires and Ben Squires.

His father died at an early age and his mother moved the family to Colorado in 1916.

Before settling in La Plata County, Mr. Squires resided in Paonia and Aspen.

He married Mary Louise Schaaf in Durango on March 9, 1933. They were married for 71 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Squires moved to the Redmesa/Marvel area and later to Breen. He was involved in farming and ranching and in 1943, he moved to Bayfield. They resided in Bayfield until 1998 when he moved to Durango.

Mr. Squires was involved in Bayfield community activities. He was a charter member and past president of the Bayfield Lion's Club and served as director and president of the Basin Co-op. He attended the Bayfield Calvary Presbyterian Church.

He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fly fishing, boating, hunting, picnics and get-togethers with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Schaaf Squires.

Survivors include children, Jim Squires of Houston, Texas; Nina Davis of Carson City, Nevada; and Bill Squires of Desert Springs, Arizona; brothers, Jack Squires and Oran Mullenix, both of Ignacio; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Earl Caudill of the Hospice of Mercy will officiate. Those making memorial contributions are encouraged to support the Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Kay Springer

Kay Springer died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque. She was 68.

Ms. Springer was born March 3, 1937, in Ganado, Ariz. She was a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. She taught elementary school, and retired to the Durango area.

Survivors include her brother, Jay Springer of Gallup, N.M.; one nephew and one uncle.

Cremation has taken place, and private services were held.

Edith M. Fitts

Edith M. Fitts, 87, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.

Mrs. Fitts was born March 10, 1918, in Marion, Ill., the daughter of George and Ella Gresham.

In 1991, she moved to Durango, where she was active in the Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church. She was also an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary.

Mrs. Fitts was fond of animals, nature and her church. Her love of animals inspired the nickname her great-grandson gave her: "Grandma Kitty."

Survivors include her son Charles "Bud" Fitts of Durango; two granddaughters and two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; brother George Gresham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Fitts, and her son Joseph Fitts.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Florida Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dan Straw with Florida Presbyterian Church will officiate. Cremation has occurred.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Florida Presbyterian Church, 1024 County Road 230, Durango, CO 81301, or to the V.F.W. Women's Auxillary, 1550 Main Avenue, Durango, CO 81301.

Allison Kendall Cummins

Allison Kendall Cummins died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at her home in Farmington.

Mrs. Cummins was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Odell, Texas, to David M. Kendall and Lula Flowers Kendall. She was the sixth of seven children.

On May 6, 1936, she married William Vergil Cummins in Santa Rosa, N.M. Together they had three children.

After homesteading in central New Mexico, they moved to Durango in 1949. Mrs. Cummins then moved to Farmington in 1999, six years after her husband died.

Mrs. Cummins enjoyed discussing politics. Her family said she loved people and never saw a stranger.

Survivors include son Waylon Cummins of Glide, Ore; son Butch Cummins of Farmington; son Donna Kay Garrison of Bloomfield, N.M.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Vergil, and grandson, Gary J. Cummins.

Mildred Anita Gilmour

Mildred Anita Gilmour died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 91.

Mrs. Gilmour was born March 5, 1914, in St. Cloud, Minn., the daughter of Guy and Bertha Snyder Bright.

She had lived in the Animas Valley since the age of 7.

Her early years were spent working at the San Juan Creamery and Durango Ice & Produce. However, Mrs. Gilmour spent most of her years as a rancher's wife on the family ranch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward.

Mrs. Gilmour is survived by her daughter, Tanna A. Noble of Durango; two grandsons and three great-granddaughters.

A funeral service was held at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango.

The Rev. Charlie Elisor officiated.

Burial followed at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Teri A. Carlson

Teri A. Carlson of Riverton, Wyo., died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Riverton Memorial Hospital. She was 40 years old.

She was born Aug. 23, 1964, in Baton Rouge, La., the daughter of James R. and P. Jane (Waldren) Cress.

She grew up in Baton Rouge and later lived in Pagosa Springs. She attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, and received her Bachelor's Degree in physical education. She worked as a recreational program director for the cities of Denver and Durango.

Ms. Carlson was a Southern Baptist. Her family said she enjoyed playing basketball, volleyball, track, cheerleading, jet skiing, and was a fan of the Denver Broncos.

Survivors include a son, Cody Carlson of Riverton, Wyo.; special friend, Chuck Bird of Riverton; her parents, Jim and Jane Cress of Pavillion; grandmother, Helen Cress of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother, Mark Cress of Riverton, Wyo.; and several other family members.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton.

The Rev. Ken Ballard will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the MS Foundation, in care of the Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main, Riverton, WY 82501.

Gloria 'Jeanne' Jones

Gloria "Jeanne" Jones, 76, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Craig, after a short illness.

Mrs. Jones was born Jan. 14, 1929, in Durango, the daughter of Roy and Rose Roberts.

She was raised and attended school in Durango. After her high school graduation, Mrs. Jones attended a nursing school in Malibu, Calif., and earned a registered nursing degree.

She married Vernon Jones, and they had a daughter. The family lived in Durango, where she worked as a registered nurse.

In 1993, Mrs. Jones moved to Craig. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

Survivors include daughter Diana Meyer of Craig; step-daughter Jan Kenard, step-son Jeff Brandon; two nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Cremation and an earlier memorial service were held in Craig.

Alfred F. Taylor

Alfred F. Taylor, 85, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.

Mr. Taylor was born May 30, 1919, in Beloit, Kan., the son of Elsa and Mary Taylor.

He grew up in Watonga, Okla., working on different farms in the area.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he received numerous commendations including the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.

After World War II, he returned to Watonga, where he met and married Reavle Franks. Together they raised their family and worked in agriculture and trucking.

In 1981, they retired and moved to the Four Corners area.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Rebecca Taylor, and his son Dan Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Reavle; daughter Connie Holtzheimer of Custer, Wash.; daughter Helen Taylor of Farmington; five grandsons and one granddaughter; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Zion Baptist Church in Ignacio.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Robin Ann Demko

Robin Ann Demko, 36, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, from injuries sustained in a car accident near Del Norte.

A memorial service has been changed to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. Pastor Jeff Huber of the First United Methodist Church of Durango will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Margaret Ann Bianchi

Margaret Ann Bianchi, 63, died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at her home in Mancos after a five-year struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

Mrs. Bianchi was born July 14, 1941, in Rochester, N.Y., the daughter of Janina and Bernard Medynski.

She married Philip Andrew Bianchi on June 21, 1960, and was a mother of four.

She had lived in Fort Bragg, Calif., and Denver before retiring in Mancos at the foot of Mesa Verde with Mr. Bianchi.

She loved her family, and she was fond of plants, animals, chile peppers, sewing, cooking and afternoon drives. She was a caregiver and loved life and laughter. She was a grandmother of four. She enjoyed her time with Terry Delaney, her second husband.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Philip Bianchi.

Survivors include daughter Kristine Bianchi of Mancos; son Philip Alan Bianchi of Denver; son Jay Bianchi of Denver; son Aric/Dante Eric Bianchi of Aurora; sister Estelle Hitzfeild and brother Bernard Medynski, both of Rochester, N.Y.; second husband Terry Delaney; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Rita Catholic Church. The Rev. Derrek D. Scott will officiate. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Saint Rita Catholic Church. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
