Loretta Evans
A 28-year resident of Joshua Tree, Calif., Loretta Evans died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the age of 65.
Born in Iowa on Feb. 12, 1939, she was one of a set of identical twins born to Roy and Katherine Davis. She was the eighth of their nine children.
A 42-year resident of California, Mrs. Evans was a retail clerk at the local Vons and Kmart before she retired.
She was a certified massage therapist. She enjoyed sewing and crafts.
She is survived by daughter, Gretchen Womack, and son Craig Merriam, both of Joshua Tree; son Bruce Merriam of Thousand Palms, Calif.; identical twin Lanore Pemble of Durango; sisters Mary Curl of Lansing, Mich., Mildred Peterson of Phoenix, Ruth Shoulders of Westminster and Madonna Bates of Thorton; brother Joe Davis of Jefferson, Iowa; and four grandchildren.
Inurnment will be private.
Robert R. 'Bob' Mutchler
Robert R. "Bob" Mutchler, 57, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at his home in Loveland.
Mr. Mutchler was born June 24, 1947, in Rapid City, S.D., to Arnold "Red" and Mary (Slowey) Mutchler.
He grew up in Rapid City, graduating from Rapid City Central High School in 1965. He attended college at Black Hills State College and graduated from University of South Dakota Vermillion in 1969.
In the 1970s, he moved to and made his home in Colorado. He owned and operated his own business, Game Sales International Inc., in Loveland for more than 20 years with his wife, Brenda (Coots) Mutchler, whom he married in August 1984. Game Sales International Inc. sold game meat and specialty foods to many restaurants and shops in the Durango area for more than 25 years.
Mr. Mutchler enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and horseback riding. He loved to travel, and during the course of his business he was able to visit such places as the Fiji Islands, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
He also had a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs, and always had a canine friend by his side. He leaves behind two special canine companions, Shiloh and Tate. Memorials have been established to the Humane Society of the Black Hills in Rapid City, S.D., and the Larimer County Humane Society in Fort Collins.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda; two stepchildren, Lawrence Coot of Loveland and Lynne Patterson of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Jane Ryan of Helena, Mont., and Rita Hyk of Rapid City, S.D.; a brother, Thomas of Silesia, Mont.; one niece, six nephews and one great-nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A family funeral service was held Jan. 22 in Rapid City, S.D. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ptarmigan Country Club, 5416 Vardon Way, Fort Collins.
Jack Burch Addington
Jack Burch Addington died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at his winter home in the mountains north of Phoenix. Mr. Addington was diagnosed with leukemia at the beginning of August and fought the disease for four months. He was 60.
Mr. Addington was born Nov. 16, 1944, in Pueblo to Burchard and Ruth Addington.
Mr. Addington was a fourth-generation Coloradan and a cowboy. He spent summers riding in a cow camp above Carbondale on the slopes of Mount Sopris.
The camp did not use pickup trucks or fifth-wheel stock trailers and had no electricity. A visit to town required a five-hour horseback ride, which was made once a month.
Mr. Addington lived in Durango for about 25 years. He and his brother, Jim, sold American Indian art for many years.
"Jack loved his family, loved his horses, and loved to ride the high mountains. He never said no to a friend, of which he had many," his family said.
Mr. Addington is survived by his wife, Nakita; daughters Jill Gruenewald of Palouse, Wash., and Feather Addington of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sons Luke Addington of Boulder and Brett Griffin of Bethel, Maine; his ex-wife, Susan Williams, of Phoenix, who is the mother of Jill, Luke and Brett; his brother, Jim Addington of Durango; and seven grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation and a Memorial of Life Service were held on Dec. 13, both at Victorious Life Fellowship in Durango.
Loberta Elizabeth (Lane) Andersen
Loberta Elizabeth Andersen, 94, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at The Valley Inn nursing home in Mancos.
Mrs. Andersen was born Aug. 1, 1910, in Boulder, the daughter of Albert and Edith (Colcord) Lane.
In her early years, she moved to Southern California with her family. While living there, Mrs. Anderson completed her nurse's training and practiced nursing. She also met and married Lawrence Andersen, and they began a family.
In 1946, she and her family returned to Colorado to live in the mountains west of Denver. She worked as a part-time nurse, and was a full-time mom.
Mrs. Andersen moved to Durango in 1982 and was a member of the local Seventh Day Adventist church.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Andersen of Taos, N.M., Steve Andersen of Minden, Nev., and Gary Andersen of Durango; brother F.E. Lane of Reno, Nev.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Cremation occurred at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango. Interment of her ashes was at Greenmount Cemetery, next to her husband. The family plans a memorial service at a later date.
John Earl Rieck
John Earl Rieck, 62, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.
Mr. Rieck was born March 12, 1942, in Plainfield, N.J., the son of Arnette and Jean Rieck.
He was a professional firefighter and chief of the Plainfield Fire Department. When he retired to Chimney Rock, he continued his career by serving in the Pagosa Springs Fire Protection District.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Diane of Chimney Rock; his mother, Jean Clark Dow of Venice, Fla.; a stepmother, Marie Rieck, Bridgewater, N.J.; a brother, Tom Rieck of Boulder; two daughters, Judi Ann Cooke of Bloomsbury, N.J., and Debi Ader of Summerville, N.J.; a son, John Earl Rieck II of Bedminster, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Stacie O'Brien of Bridgewater, N.J., and Jennifer Fitzgerald of Brick, N.J.; a stepson, Jeff Blazier of Fords, N.J.; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Mr. Rieck's brother, Thomas A. Rieck, will officiate, and additional services will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031 in Durango.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pagosa Springs Fire Protection District, 191 N. Pagosa Blvd., Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.
Dick Seward 'Red' Greer
Dick Seward "Red" Greer, 68, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at his home in Marvel of natural causes.
Mr. Greer was born Feb. 22, 1936 in Redmesa, the son of Frank and Harriet Greer.
While in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958, he served on the USS Philippine and received a Presidential Commendation for the work he did keeping the ship from going to dry dock after a collision with another ship.
On March 20, 1960, Mr. Greer married Donna Harris, and although they later divorced, they had three sons together.
He then married Dora Martinez on June 28, 1973, and adopted her two children.
Mr. Greer lived in the Marvel area all his life. He worked as a fabricator and welder throughout the Four Corners, and was known for his welding skills. He also worked in Alaska during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline.
He was a handyman and always willing to help someone fix anything. His family noted he knew most of the plumbing problems of all the houses in Marvel.
Included among Mr. Greer's hobbies are music and tinkering with antique tractors and engines. He also enjoyed visiting and spending time with family.
Over last several years, he spent numerous hours restoring a 1948 Dodge pickup. It was almost completed before his death.
Mr. Greer was devout Christian, and he gave his time, his talents and mostly his heart and soul when anyone was in need, said his family.
He is survived by his wife, Dora, of Marvel; son Rodger Greer of Larkspur; sons Marlon Greer, Mike Greer and Paul Greer, all of Marvel; daughter Michelle Kirk of Marvel; 12 grandchildren; his first wife, Donna Rea, of Marvel; sister Annabelle Isaacs of Buhl, Ida.; brother Pat Greer of Marvel; and foster daughter Jessie Slowheart of Durango.
Visitation will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School on Colorado Highway 140 in Kline. The Rev. Bud Rousset with Marvel United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will occur at Marvel Cemetery.

Irene E. Ferdinando
Irene E. Ferdinando, 82, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at her home in Durango. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Pastor Jeff Huber will officiate.
Robert A. 'Bob' Atencio
Robert "Bob" Atencio died Jan. 15, 2005, at the Four Corners Health Center. He was 85.
Visitation will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary. A rosary will be said at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Marvel Methodist Church with the Rev. Bud Rousset officiating. Interment will be at the Marvel Cemetery.
Along with his father and brothers, Mr. Atencio farmed and raised livestock on the Dryside, west of the La Plata River. For 25 years, he was a member of the Marvel Grange and also served as its gatekeeper.
Gardening was one of Mr. Atencio's hobbies. He also dabbled in music with his harmonica.
He was known for his sense of humor and willingness to help his neighbors, the family said.
Survivors include his sisters, Frances Maag of Kalida, Ohio, Stella Brinkman of Ottawa, Ohio, Susan Eisenberger of Defiance, Ohio, Ruth Lynch of Northglenn and LaVerne Pulliam of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Marvel; brothers Fred Atencio of Boulder, Leonard Atencio of Durango and Alfonso Atencio of Coolidge, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A rosary will be said at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Marvel Methodist Church with the Rev. Bud Rousset officiating. Interment will be at the Marvel Cemetery.
Pauline Oliger
Pauline Oliger, who moved to Durango in 1951, died Thursday Jan. 13, 2005, in Caņon City. She was 90.
Mrs. Oliger was born Pauline Heinz on Feb. 20, 1914, in Phoenix to Mark Heinz and Viola Mehan. She married Louis J. Oliger in 1932. The couple started Oliger Sheet Metal in Phoenix in 1935, moving the business to Durango in 1951. Mrs. Oliger worked full time in the family business, raised seven children and was an active community volunteer.
The Oligers helped found the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Phoenix. Mrs. Oliger was active in Catholic Daughters in Durango and Phoenix. In Durango, she was active in the St. Columba Alter Society and the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary. She coordinated Mercy's Meals on Wheels program for more than 15 years until macular degeneration idled her.
In 1995, Mrs. Oliger was honored by the Four Corners Conference for Women for outstanding contributions to the community.
Mrs. Oliger is survived by daughters Dorothy Ganem of Phoenix, Janet Louise Yeager of Bayfield, Sally Padilla of Redlands, Calif., Mary Fenwick of Loveland, Shari Chrane-Jones of Durango and Beverly Lemons of Caņon City. She also is survived by 18 grandchildren and more than 50 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986 and a son, Jim Oliger, in 1989.
A rosary is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Columba Catholic Church. A mass of Christian burial is scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday, also at St. Columba, with the Rev. James Koenigsfeld officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Mary E. Clark
Mary E. Clark, a resident of Durango since 1967, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, of cancer in Aztec. She was 76.
Mrs. Clark was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Frankfort, Kan., to George and Suzie Jones. She married Alexis Clark in 1951 in Delta and the couple lived in Uravan for 17 years. In Durango, Mrs. Clark worked in public laundries for more than 30 years, becoming known as "The Little Laundry Lady."
Mrs. Clark, a red-head who spoke her mind, enjoyed her work because she loved meeting people from around the world. She also enjoyed television, particularly "All in the Family," "Bonanza" and "The Waltons."
Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband, for whom she was the caregiver for 12 years; son Alexis Raymond Clark Jr. of Round Mountain, Nev.; daughter Clare McNeal of Aztec; and grandchildren Ryan, Landon and Mitchell Gilkey, all of Aztec, Justin Clark of Florida and April, Joshua and Chris Clark of Round Mountain. She was preceded in death by daughter Selma Elizabeth Clark, brother Glen Jones and sister Donna Atchley.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 East Ute St., Farmington. A funeral is scheduled at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Aaron Parker officiating. Interment will be in Olathe Cemetery at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Olathe.
Ava Mural Meador
Ava Mural Meador died on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 83.
Mrs. Meador was born on Jan. 24, 1921, in Randolph County, Ark., the daughter of Henry N. and Cora Belle (Askew) Stull.
On Feb. 10, 1963, Mrs. Meador married William Daniel Meador in Richmond, Calif.
She was a hard-working rancher who enjoyed the rural life. One of her favorite pastimes was gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Dan Meador of Mancos; children Ron Mullen of Farmington, Dennis Mullen of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Halla Belle Bogart of San Pablo, Calif.; step-daughters Sheral May Linne of Rodeo, Calif., and Mary Louise McCanna of Tillamook, Ore.; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and brother Bert Stull of Nara Vista, N.M.
Memorial services will be held later this summer.
