Mark G. Wauchope
Mark G. Wauchope died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, while staying with his family in Seabrook, Texas. He was 37. The cause of death was not disclosed.
He was born on Dec. 14, 1967, in Boston to Kendrick L. Wauchope and Edith K. Chill.
Mr. Wauchope grew up in Texas and was a graduate of the University of Houston. He co-founded and was the director of Engineering at Apache Digital Corp. from 1994 to 2001. Then he co-founded KivaNet, a wireless Internet service provider in Southwest Colorado.
He lived in Durango for 10 years, until this past May, and planned to move back after Christmas.
His family said that Mr. Wauchope was bright, innovative and energetic, and his contributions to his companies and community were significant.
Mr. Wauchope enjoyed living in Durango, especially river rafting the upper Animas River and mountain biking. He was an accomplished musician and played with the New Hope praise and worship band.
He is survived by his mother, Edith K. Chill of Seabrook, Texas; his father, Kendrick L. Wauchope of Durango; a sister, Katherine Woodside of Tearland, Texas; two nieces, a nephew and many aunts and uncles.
A service to celebrate his life will be held today at Living Stones Church in Alvin, Texas.
Ercil Darvin 'Doc' Evans
Ercil Darvin Evans died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at the University of California, Los Angeles medical center after complications from heart surgery. He was 73.
Mr. Evans was born March 28, 1931, in El Paso, Texas, the son of Luther Rex and Mary Inez Evans.
On July 25, 1952, he married Frances "Fran" Nelson in El Paso.
Mr. Evans served as a U.S. Marine and worked on the Southern Pacific Railroad out of El Paso. He moved to Bayfield in 1967 and was an employee of La Plata Electric Association for 22 years. He also served on the Bayfield Town Board.
Mr. Evans was a Dallas Cowboy fan, an avid golfer and took great pleasure in flying his plane. He also enjoyed collecting and showing antique cars.
His family said he will be remembered as a loving husband and a nurturing father and grandfather.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Frances "Fran" Nelson Evans of Bayfield; his brother, Gerald Ray Evans of El Paso; his daughter, Rebecca Jenkins of Oceanside, Calif.; two sons, Mark Evans of Bayfield and Matt Evans of Yorba Linda, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Cremation has occurred, and a private memorial service will be held later in Bayfield.
Gregory 'Greg' Townsend
Gregory Townsend died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, in Canġn City. He was 51.
Mr. Townsend was born on Sept. 28, 1953, in Durango to Carvel Townsend and Jessie Knight.
He was born, raised and educated in Durango. As a young man, Mr. Townsend worked construction with his father. They later began a partnership and owned Four Corners Sewing, a business which sold and repaired commercial and residential sewing machines. Later, Mr. Townsend became the sole owner of the business.
While in Durango, Mr. Townsend was a member of the Jaycees.
In 2001, he moved to Canġn City and established the Frontier Sewing Machine Co.
He enjoyed his religion with his Christian family and held it utmost in his life. He relaxed by doing machinery embroidery, quilting and yard work.
His family said Mr. Townsend had an upbeat and cheery personality.
Mr. Townsend is survived by his mother, Jessie Townsend of Canġn City; his brother, Richard Townsend of Veguita, N.M.; his sister, Patricia Christiansen of Canġn City; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson Memorial Chapel in Canġn City.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
Bill L. Griffin
Bill L. Griffin, a World War II veteran, golfer and tenor, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, from numerous medical complications at Mercy Medical Center. He was 78.
"He had a beautiful singing voice," said his wife, Della Griffin of Durango. The Griffins were married in Grand Junction on Feb. 1, 1953.
Mr. Griffin was born in Grand Junction on Nov. 26, 1926; he was raised there by his father, Harry, and mother, Della.
During World War II, Mr. Griffin served in the South Pacific as a machinist for the U.S. Navy. After returning to the United States, he worked for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in Grand Junction, Denver and eventually Durango. Mr. Griffin retired in 1985 after 43 years as a mechanical supervisor.
Retirement didn't slow Mr. Griffin down, however. He was a member of the Masons, Elks Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Griffin also actively served for six years, including a term as president, for the Hillcrest Golf Club board. During his time leading the board, Mr. Griffin oversaw plans for the course's expansion. He was also the secretary-treasurer of the San Juan Men's Bowling Association for 12 years.
Mr. Griffin also loved music and wood-working.
He is survived by his wife, Della, of Durango; two children, Cindera Haas of Omaha, Neb., and Richard Griffin of Grand Junction; two granddaughters, Jimmi Shiers of Fort Collins and Lt. Cherie Griffin of Ramstein, Germany; one sister, Betty James of Grand Junction; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service for Mr. Griffin will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango.

Jack Burch Addington
The venue and time for Jack Burch Addington's service have been rescheduled. The service will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Victorious Life Fellowship, 25th Street and Junction Street in Durango.
Jack Burch Addington died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at his winter home in the mountains north of Phoenix. Mr. Addington was diagnosed with leukemia at the beginning of August and fought the disease for four months. He was 60.
Mr. Addington was born Nov. 16, 1944, in Pueblo to Burchard and Ortella Addington.
Mr. Addington was a fourth-generation Coloradoan and a cowboy. He spent summers riding in a cow camp above Carbondale on the slopes of Mount Sopris. The cow camp did not use pickup trucks or fifth-wheel stock trailers and had no electricity. A visit to town required a five-hour horseback ride, which was made once a month.
Mr. Addington lived in Durango for about 25 years. He and his brother, Jim, sold American Indian art for many years.
"Jack loved his family, loved his horses, and loved to ride the high mountains. He never said no to a friend, of which he had many," his family said.
Mr. Addington is survived by his wife, Nakita; daughters Jill Gruenewald of Palouse, Wash., and Feather Addington of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sons Luke Addington of Boulder and Brett Griffin of Bethel, Maine; his ex-wife, Susan Williams, of Phoenix, who is the mother of Jill, Luke and Brett; his brother, Jim Addington of Durango; and many grandchildren, including Robert Challanfant, R.J. Ferrell, Vernon Ferrell and Ashley Addington, all of Durango; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday and a Memorial of Life Service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, both at Hood Mortuary Chapel.
James Joseph 'Joe' Stonehocker
James Joseph Stonehocker died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004. He was 90.
Mr. Stonehocker was born in Denver on Sept. 8, 1914, to James and Mary Elizabeth Stonehocker.
In 1950, he married Flora Stonehocker.
Mr. Stonehocker lived in Durango from 1953 to 1989. He was an employee of La Plata Motors and a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge, both in Durango.
Mr. Stonehocker is survived by his brothers Walter Stonehocker and Earl Stonehocker, both of Denver; sons James Stonehocker of Denver, and Dennis Stonehocker of Longmont; daughters Elizabeth Prater of Littleton and Kathy Porter of Fort Collins; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora.
Visitation was held Saturday at Horan and McConaty Family Chapel, 9998 Grant St., Thornton. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 11385 Greant St., Northglenn. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Fort Morgan.
Sherry Diane Rhodes
Sherry Diane Rhodes died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 39.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pine River Valley Baptist Church in Bayfield. The Rev. Joe Sparks will officiate.
Lora Belle Peterson
Lora Belle Peterson died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004. She was 94.
Mrs. Peterson was born Jan. 24, 1910, in Willard, N.M., to James and Laura Lee.
She lived most of her life in the Bayfield area where she and her husband, Mark Peterson, were ranchers. They were married for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her husband Mark Peterson and two sons, Robert Rowles and Leonard Peterson.
She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Wade of Albuquerque, and Marka Neuenschwander of Farmington; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Private family services are pending.
James Lynn Mickey
James Lynn Mickey died of congestive heart failure in Lithonia, Ga., on Dec. 7, 2004. He was 59.
Mr. Mickey was born April 24, 1945, in Salinas, Calif., to Jimmy and Bobbie Davis.
When he was almost 13, he was placed in the Mickey home by child welfare in Galveston, Texas. Mr. Mickey was adopted on Aug. 8, 1968, by Trueman and Wilma Mickey, of Durango.
Mr. Mickey is survived by his parents Trueman and Wilma Mickey of Durango; daughters Regina Mickey of Texas and Marie Mitchell of Georgia.; sisters Trula Smith and Roxanne Gentry, both of Durango, Alla Shiplett of Goodwill, Okla., Amy Coffey of San Lorenzo, N.M., Paula Yarbrough of Albuquerque and Trina Dukes of Aztec; brothers Walen Mickey of Albuquerque and Scott Mickey of Johnstown; two granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial will be today in Decater, Ga.
James Richard 'Jim' Graham
James Richard "Jim" Graham died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his home in Hesperus. He was 61.
Mr. Graham was born Aug. 31, 1943, in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of James R. and Ruth C. Graham.
He married Diana L. Ferris on April 29, 1967, in Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Graham earned a bachelor's of arts degree from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.; a master's of arts from Wayne State University in Detroit; and a master's of science from Southern Mississippi State University in Hattiesburg, Miss.
He retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force and then worked 10 years as the director of symposia in the National Defense University in Fort Lesley McNair in Washington. In 2001, he retired to live with his wife, Lani, in Durango.
Mr. Graham was active at Centreville United Methodist Church in Centreville, Va., and the Washington, D.C., Wabash College alumni group. He raised three puppies through their training as guide dogs with Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Mr. Graham enjoyed fishing, skiing, cooking, traveling and photography. He also enjoyed dancing, especially English country and contra folk dance.
He is survived by his wife, Lani Graham of Hesperus; his mother, Ruth Graham of Indianapolis; his daughters, Jennie Graham of Durango and Wendy Graham of Durango; and his brothers, Tom Graham of Racine, Wis., and Ray Graham of Fishers, Ind.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Indianapolis and Centreville.

Mabel C. Armstrong
Mabel C. Armstrong died Dec. 4, 2004, in Canġn City. She was 94.
Mrs. Armstrong was born Sept. 5, 1910, in Harlan, Iowa, to Fredrick and Goldie (Sweinhart) Stevens.
In 1929, she married Charles E. Armstrong. Mrs. and Mr. Armstrong were longtime residents of Durango before retirement. After retirement, they summered in the Vallecito area. After her husband's death, Mrs. Armstrong moved to Canġn City in 1998 with her son Charles E. Armstrong Jr., who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Armstrong is survived by her son, Robert Armstrong of Colorado Springs; three sisters, Marilyn Stone of Northern California, Mildred Adams of Northern California and Muriel Stevens of Denver; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
At the family's request, no services will be held. Cremation will occur through Holt Family Funeral Home.
Mary T. Gallegos
Mary T. Gallegos died at her home in Cortez on Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at the age of 78.
Mrs. Gallegos was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Alamosa, to Ralph and Onofre (Duran) Martinez.
In October 1946, she married Adonais "Ed" Gallegos in Aztec. They shared 58 years of marriage and had 12 children together.
Mrs. Gallegos enjoyed camping, cooking and chasing after the kids. She was active in the Catholic church until her health made it impossible.
Her family remembers her as a great mother and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by three of her children, Stella Lopez, Steven Gallegos and Stella Gallegos.
Mrs. Gallegos is survived by her husband, Ed Gallegos of Cortez; children Jo Mott of Cortez, Alex Gallegos of Cortez, Phillip Martinez of Durango, Toby Gallegos of Durango, Leonard Gallegos of Denver, Maryann Miera of Cortez, Larry Gallegos of Farmington, Carmen Gallegos of Cortez and Ernestine Olivas of Cortez; and numerous grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Afterwards, a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Funeral services for Mrs. Gallegos will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Derrek D. Scott will officiate. Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
