Anthony J. 'Tony' Piccoli
Anthony J. "Tony" Piccoli died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Corpus Christi, Texas, after a short illness.
He was born March 30, 1934, in Albany, N.Y., to James "Jim" and Henrietta Piccoli.
The family moved to Durango in 1945 and later started the Eagle Block Company. In 1981, after selling his part of the business to his nephew Jerry, Mr. Piccoli moved to Phoenix, where he lived for several years before moving to Corpus Christi.
Mr. Piccoli was a fan of old movies and classical music, and he kept an extensive collection of both. As a hobby, he enjoyed making movies.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gino.
Mr. Piccoli is survived by two sisters, Lida Piccoli Bowen and Gloria Wolfe, both of Las Cruces, N.M.; sister-in-law Wilma Piccoli of Durango; and 10 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be scheduled in late spring in Durango.
LeRoy W. Goodwin
Avid outdoorsman, active Republican and former college professor LeRoy W. Goodwin died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Hospice of Mercy at Four Corners Health Care Center after battling Parkinson's disease. He was 84.
Perhaps best known for his work as a professor of political science at Fort Lewis College, Mr. Goodwin left his mark on many students and established the legislative intern program during his tenure from 1964 until his retirement in 1988.
Mr. Goodwin was born in Cunningham, Kan., on Nov. 26, 1920. He was the oldest son of Zola Wilson and Ernest Goodwin. At a young age Mr. Goodwin moved with his family to Ellicott, Colo., where he graduated from high school as valedictorian.
World War II interrupted his college studies. During the war, Mr. Goodwin served as a staff sergeant and a sharpshooter attached to the Seventh Corps in Europe.
In 1947, Mr. Goodwin earned a degree in journalism from the University of Colorado. He married Devona Marie Lundquist in 1952. In 1957 Mr. Goodwin received a doctorate in political science at Columbia University in New York. He then moved to Durango, where he took a job as information director at Fort Lewis A&M. Seven years after joining the staff at Fort Lewis, he took up a teaching position in the political science department.
Mr. Goodwin was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and in the community. He was an avid skier and outdoorsman and a passionate Republican.
"LeRoy achieved so many things in his life, but he will always be remembered for his ability to bring out the best in people," said his wife, Devona Goodwin. "He expected a lot from his students and everyone around him, and inspired them to meet those expectations."
Mr. Goodwin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Devona; three sons, LeRoy of Espaņola, N.M., Kevin of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Erik of Cairo, Egypt; and four grandchildren, Matthew and Michelle of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Joe and Kelly of Cairo, Egypt. He is also survived by one brother, Bill Goodwin of Colorado Springs; and three sisters, Zelma Gardner of Pratt, Kan., Virgie Shockley of Tyler, Texas, and Norma Pisel of Hickory, N.C.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Goodwin, in 1979.
A memorial service and requiem mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave., in Durango. Interment will follow in the St. Mark's columbarium, with a reception to follow in St. Mark's parish hall.

Rodney Carmean
Rodney Carmean of Midland, Texas, died on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.
Mr. Carmean was born Sept. 19, 1929, to Norman Jerry Carmean and Ella Marie Kunkel Carmean in Bartlesville, Okla. He was raised in Durango.
Shortly after World War II, Mr. Carmean served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1951.
He married Margie Carmean on Dec. 31, 1949. They were married for 55 years.
Mr. Carmean was a longtime employee of Midland National Bank as publications manager and corporate pilot for the bank and Murray Fasken for 20 years.
He is preceded in death by his son, Floyd Carmean.
Mr. Carmean is survived by his wife, Margie Carmean of Midland; daughters Marta Beard of Midland and Marilyn Messinger of Denton, Texas; sisters Norma Kinney of Melrose, N.M., Audry Clifford of Tucson, Ariz., and Linda Horton of Loveland; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel in Midland. The Rev. Bob Porterfield will officiate.
Katherine J. Gardner
Katherine J. Gardner died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at her home in Durango. She was 49. The cause of death was cancer.
Mrs. Gardner was born July 2, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Maurice and Judith (Imset) Moeser.
She moved to Arizona at age 8, and at 17, she met Stephen D. Gardner. They were married two years later in Mesa, Ariz.
Mrs. Gardner graduated from nursing school and moved to Colorado in 1988. She began her nursing career at Mercy Medical Center, eventually serving in the hospital's nursery department, providing care for the newborn infants.
She enjoyed watching her own children play sports and was a member of the Women's Guild at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband Stephen D. Gardner of Durango; son S. Kristoffer Gardner of Denver; son Daniel Gardner of Durango; daughter Sarah Gardner of Durango; father Maurice Moeser of Mesa, Ariz.; mother Judith Moeser of Mesa, Ariz.; brother Bruce Moeser of Mesa, Ariz.; and brother Brian Moeser of Mesa, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2611 Junction Street. Pastor Monte Guswell of St. Paul's Lutheran Church will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

John Henry Cashion
A resident of Rollinsville, John Henry Cashion died at the Boulder Community Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004. He was 87.
Mr. Cashion was born in Brownsville, Texas, on April 22, 1917.
He was a member of the U.S. Army for 27 years, and retired as a Signal Corps Officer with the rank of colonel. During his service, Mr. Cashion served as director of the European Signal School and director of manpower and personnel. In addition, he once served as the comptroller of the Signal Corps Complex covering five laboratories and a training center. He had 56 months of overseas combat experience, including 11 campaigns. He served our country during both World War II and the Korean conflict.
Mr. Cashion was interested in community organizations. He spent many years actively involved in the Durango Masonic Lodge No. 46. Most recently, he volunteered at the High Country Fire Department Auxiliary.
Mr. Cashion married Bonnie Lee Merchant on Nov. 22, 1991. Together, they lived in Gilpin County, after having remained in Durango for one year to complete business interests. They shared a family of three sons, two granddaughters, one grandson and seven great-grandchildren.
Cremation will be conducted by the Howe Mortuary. Memorial services will be held in the summer of 2005. Contributions may be sent to the High Country Fire Department Auxiliary.
Marie Robbins
A resident of Salida, Vinnie Marie Robbins, who suffered from congestive heart failure, died in Colorado Springs on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. She was 80.
Mrs. Robbins was born on May 16, 1924, in Durango to Jesse Clarence and Emily Harriette Miller.
On Nov. 28, 1946, she married Richard (Dick) Leroy Robbins Sr. in her parent's home in Durango. They were married for 58 years.
Mrs. Robbins was a faithful member of the Upper Room Church of God in Salida where she played piano and sang for the worship team and was a member of the prayer chain. She was a leader for local Girl Scout troops and a service unit manager. She was a school teacher and woman's Bible study leader, and she was involved in "Women's Aglow."
Mrs. Robbins enjoyed spending time with her family. She looked forward to family gatherings. She also enjoyed music, singing in the church choir, playing the piano, camping and exploring unknown roads on Sunday drives with her husband.
Mrs. Robbins is survived by her husband, Dick Robbins of Salida; her son, Rick Robbins of Deer Trail; her daughter, Robin Sheets of Salida; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A private cremation was held. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Salida Vineyard Christian Fellowship, in Salida.

Pauline Varnado Goza
Pauline Varnado Goza died at Four Corners Health Care Center on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004. She was 83.
Mrs. Goza was born on May 31, 1921, in Jefferson County, Miss., to Sammie and Ellen Varnado.
On July 14, 1961, she married Bernie S. Goza in Vicksburg, Miss.
Mrs. Goza worked as a seamstress and homemaker. She had been a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Mississippi. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and knitting.
Mrs. Goza is survived by her daughter, Christie Ivey, her grandson, George A. Ivey, and her granddaughter, Sarah Ivey, all of Durango.
A memorial service will be held in May 2005, at which time her ashes will be buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, Miss.
Irene E. Ferdinando
Irene E. Ferdinando died from cancer on Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at her home in Durango. She was 82.
Mrs. Ferdinando was born in New York City on July 28, 1922, to Everett Waddell and Lillian Morris Waddell. She was baptized in the Methodist Church. Her family moved to Kansas when she was a small child. The dust years were rough in Kansas so the family moved to Durango in 1936. She married Anthony "Tony" Ferdinando on Jan. 15, 1944, in Denver; they celebrated their 60th anniversary last year.
Mrs. Ferdinando went to work for Durango School District 9-R after the children were of school age. She was a cook and manager at the Miller Junior High School cafeteria for 27 years. After retiring, she decided to help at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center only to be hired on as site coordinator of the dining hall for 12 years. She was a member of the Rebekah's, Animas Valley Grange, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Christopher Colombo Lodge.
She is survived by her husband, Anthony "Tony" Ferdinando of Durango; two children, Ann Tonia Hankins of Sequim, Wash., and Gary Ferdinando of Cortez; a stepdaughter, Shirley Ann Moates of Terre Haute, Ind.; a granddaughter, Kimberlee Thorlton of North Bend, Wash.; a grandson, Chad Hankins of Sammamish, Wash.; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Florence Baker of Durango, Dorothy Payson of Midwest City, Okla., and Ruth Cammos of Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a wonderful wife and mother, said her husband, Anthony Ferdinando.
A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church.

Marguerite Dean
Marguerite Dean died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, in Helena, Mont., after a four-month battle with cancer.
Mrs. Dean was born June 20, 1927, in rural Decatur, Neb., to Ira and Ethel (Connealy) Austin. She attended elementary school through 10th grade in Decatur. Her parents moved to Summersville, Mo., where she finished high school as valedictorian in 1944. After graduation, she attended Drury Business College and later worked in the banking business. She married Roy V. Dean in Durango in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mrs. Dean worked for Mountain Bell in Durango for more than 30 years, retiring in 1981. She devoted much of her time after retirement and Mr. Dean's death to St. Columba Catholic Church. She volunteered at the Mercy Medical Center gift shop, delivered Meals on Wheels and visited the Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango in support of their patients. Puddin, her miniature poodle, often accompanied her in the volunteer work. She was also an amateur poet.
She moved to Helena, Mont., in 1998.
She is survived by her older sister, Alameda Hurlocker; two daughters, Terri Watson of Helena, Mont., and Marganna Bottoms of Fairbanks, Alaska; three grandchildren, Leslie (Watson) Marohn of East Helena, Mont., Jennifer (Watson) Leuck of Boise, Idaho, and Matt Watson of Denver; and four great-grandchildren.
A rosary service was held Dec. 28 at the Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Montana. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of Saint Helena.
A gathering of friends will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary in Durango. Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Karen May Wuest
Karen May Wuest died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, in Durango. She was 43. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Ms. Wuest was born May 31, 1961, in Richmond, Va., the daughter of Robert and Judith Wuest. She was a 1980 graduate of Ignacio High School. She worked at Kroeger's for many years and more recently in the corporate offices of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
Ms. Wuest loved animals, especially her dog, Kiera. She enjoyed traveling and her family.
"She's known for her great sense of humor and the joy she brought others," said her sister, April Curtis.
She is survived by her mother, Judith Wuest of Ignacio; a sister, April Curtis of Ignacio; two brothers, Robert Wuest of Ignacio and Wayne Morris of Pensacola, Fla.; a grandmother, Kathleen Bergeron of Richmond, Va.; five aunts; several nephews, including Benjamin Curtis of Ignacio; and a niece.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church, and the Rev. James Koenigsfeld will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
