Jon Charles Wirick
Jon Charles Wirick died Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte. He was 69.
Mr. Wirick was born Aug. 21, 1936, in San Mateo, Calif., the son of Harry and Lucille Christina Rosedale Wirick.
He served in the Army in Germany after World War II. Mr. Wirick began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad when he was 18, and retired from being a locomotive engineer after 43 years.
On July 4, 1993, Mr. Wirick married Dallas Bunting Wirick.
Following his retirement in 1995, they moved to Durango.
His passions included watching old movies and trains, including the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
"He was a wonderful person," said his daughter, Brita, "and a great father."
Mr. Wirick is survived by his wife Dallas Bunting Wirick; two daughters, Brita Bleuel of California and Beate Couturier of Alaska; son Richard Wirick of California; two step-sons Thad Shelby and Ray Shelby, both of California; four granddaughters, one grandson and one great-grandson.

Helen J. Madden
Helen J. Madden died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, Colorado. She was 95.
Mrs. Madden was born June 18, 1909, in Hammond, Ind., the daughter of Tony and Johanna D'Errico.
She grew up in the Hammond area and attended St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Ind. She obtained her nursing degree from St. Margaret's Hospital in Indiana and worked as campus nurse at St. Mary's while obtaining her bachelor's in science. For several years, she was a nursing instructor.
She married John Madden on July 9, 1942, in Indiana and they moved to California in 1947. For many years, she was a homemaker but returned to the nursing field as an instructor in 1964, and taught at California Hospital Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles until her retirement in 1974.
Mrs. Madden moved to Durango in 1996 and lived with her daughter and her family until her death.
Mrs. Madden was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and spent many hours in daily prayer and praying the rosary.
"She was a caregiver, and her life was spent caring for her family for her patients and her students," said her daughter, Kathy. "She had a very strong sense of family."
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Schneyer of Durango; a son, Bob Madden of Temple City, Calif.; four grandchildren, including Raymond Schneyer of Durango; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Madden.
A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday and a Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Her burial will occur at Resurrection Cemetery in San Gabriel, Calif.

Cynthia Iacono
Cynthia Iacono died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004. She was 51.
Ms. Iacono was born on Jan. 27, 1952, in Buffalo, N.Y.
She is survived by her mother, Geraldine Iacono of Grand Island, N.Y.; brother John Iacono of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; sister Karen Iacono of Pacific Pallisades, Calif.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Iacono.
Memorial services will be held at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Fort Lewis College Chapel. Opal Ruth Brown
Opal Ruth Brown died from brain cancer on Nov. 11, 2004, in the presence of her family. She was 82.
Ms. Brown was born in Durango on Aug. 30, 1923, one of five children born to Sam and Beatrice Trujillo of Sunnyside. She moved to the Whittier/La Habra, Calif., area in 1961 and worked for many years for the B.F. Goodrich Co.
She was a devoted member of the First Family Church in Whittier and most recently, the North Hills Church in Brea.
Ms. Brown was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon.
She is survived by her daughter Roxieann Danner of San Diego; three grandchildren; her brother, Charles Trujillo of Apple Valley; six great-grandchildren; a nephew and several nieces.
Her family will hold a private ceremony and sprinkling of ashes, and her friends will hold a memorial service in honor of Ms. Brown at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Friendly Village Mobile Home Park in La Habra, Calif. For more information regarding the memorial service, call (562) 698-4163.

Lilian Balius
Lilian Balius, born in 1906 in what is believed to be the oldest intact structure in Durango, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004. She was 98.
Mrs. Balius was born Aug. 29, 1906, in the Joy Cabin, built in the 1870s in Animas City. The cabin is now located on the grounds of the Animas Museum.
Mrs. Balius was known to mix independent mindedness with motherly love for her nephews and niece. She worked prior to marriage as a La Plata County court reporter during the Great Depression before taking a job with an insurance company.
"She was a very grand and independent woman," said Linda Luther, wife of Mrs. Balius' nephew Jerry.
Mrs. Balius was very active in the Catholic church, and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of Durango. She lived in Durango until 1944, when she got married and moved to Pueblo. She was an active member of the Pueblo Veterans Service Club and the Pueblo Bishop's Guild.
Mrs. Bailus was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Balius. She is survived by her nephews Jerry Luther of Durango and Eugene Luther of Silverton, as well as their half-sister, Margaret Standridge of Norman, Okla.
Viewing of Mrs. Balius will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the George McCarthy Funeral Home, 401 Broadway, Pueblo. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church, 226 Michigan Ave., in Pueblo.

Beryl M. Andre Moffit
Beryl M. Andre Moffit, the mother of former Durango High School teacher Mary Jeanette Andre and a resident of Durango herself for a short time, died Nov. 10, 2004, at the Mechanicsville Care Center in Mechanicsville, Iowa. She celebrated her 100th birthday on Aug. 24.
Mrs. Moffit is survived by son Paul Andre of Shakopee, Minn., and daughter Mary Jeanette Andre, who moved to Mechanicsville after retiring from Durango High School after 22 years as an art teacher and head of the physical education department. Mrs. Moffit lived in Durango from 2000 to 2002.
Services are at 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville.

Floyd O. Wine
Floyd O. Wine, a longtime Durango gunsmith, died on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at his home in Rocheport, Mo.
Mr. Wine was born Feb. 16, 1948, in Stow, Ohio, to Ottmer Floyd and Margerette Zacharuski. He graduated from Stow High School and attended Ohio Northern University. He graduated from gunsmithing school in Trinidad.
On July 5, 1986, Mr. Wine married Carol Dale at the Fort Lewis College Chapel. They competed in shooting competitions and raised wirehair pointers.
He owned and operated the Gunsmith Shoppe in Durango for 25 years, and he had recently moved to Columbia, Mo., where he was the gunsmithing/riflesmithing product line manager for Midway USA.
Mr. Wine was an avid hunter and sportsman. He was considered one of the top all-around shooters in the country. He taught hunter education in the Durango area for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Rocheport, Mo.; his mother, Marge; and sister, Debbie, of Stow, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his son Brian O. Wine.

A celebration of Mr. Floyd's life will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031.
Victor Delano Lidgren
Victor Delano Lidgren died on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at his home in Dolores. He was 61.
Mr. Lidgren was born on Aug. 27, 1943, in Bismarck, N.D., to Alfred and Ella (Beska) Lidgren.
On Dec. 20, 1969, Mr. Lidgren married Pauline Rivera in Loveland.
He owned and operated a drywall business. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially the mountains. His favorite pastimes were fishing and camping.
Mr. Lidgren is survived by his daughters, Yvonne Weinman of Saratoga, Wyo., Kelly Fawn of Portland, Ore., Veronica Nufer of Yamhill, Ore., Ella Folsom of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Sarita Lemons of San Diego; and his sons, Victor Joe Lidgren of Sterling and Jerome Lidgren of Ca�on City. He also leaves nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Marylin Kauffman of Clackamas, Ore., and brother, Zane Lidgren of Oregon.
Memorial services for Mr. Lidgren will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Baptist Chapel in Cortez. Pastor Ed Hicks will officiate.

David L. Corlett
A longtime Dove Creek resident, David L. Corlett died on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 87.
Mr. Corlett was born on June 22, 1917, in Salida, the son of Thomas William and Ora Ann (Latimer) Corlett.
He served in the Army Air Corp and defended the country.
On Sept. 24, 1941, in Lamar, he married Jean Romer. In 1945, they moved to the Dove Creek area.
Mr. Corlett was an active member of his community, maintaining memberships in the American Legion, Dove Creek Fire Department, Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Club and the National Rifle Association. He was an active member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. In 1982, Mr. Corlett held the position as the Colorado Masonic Grand Master. He was a member of the La Sal, Utah, and Telluride Masonic Lodges. He also belonged to the Escalante Shriners Club and the Alkalia Shriners of Pueblo.
He was a pilot who enjoyed flying. He was also a flight instructor.
Mr. Corlett is survived by his wife, Jean Corlett, of Dove Creek; his children, James W. Corlett of Denver, Ann DeLancey of Colorado Springs, Charles D. Corlett of Littleton and Kathryn J. Corlett of Durango. He leaves four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dove Creek United Methodist Church. The Rev. Suzanne Listemann will officiate.

Paul G. Eaton
Paul G. Eaton, 90, died on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004.
He lived on the Uintah-Ouray Indian Reservation all his adult life, and chose to live the past 10 years at the Uintah Care Center in Vernal, Utah.
Mr. Eaton served in the front lines of World War II from 1943-1945. He served his tour of duty in Germany, loading torpedoes into the large artillery guns. He always said that the only way he and his buddies stayed alive was by jumping into nearby foxholes when they heard the whistling of enemy gunfire overhead. Mr. Eaton did not want to talk about his war days much, but he appreciated the magnitude of his experiences.
After he came back from the war, he worked for the U.S. government at the dairy farm for the Ute Vocational Indian School in Ignacio.
He was a fireman for the old power plant, stoking the fire to heat all the old government buildings at the Southern Ute Agency.
In 1960, Mr. Eaton married Effe Wash, from Fort Duchesne, Utah. After she passed away, he did not want to return home to Ignacio. He always said: "Everyone that I knew are all gone. My aunt Nana is gone. I want to stay here."
Mr. Eaton is survived by his sisters, Shirley Frost and Effie Monte of Ignacio, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary. The rosary will be said at 6 p.m. today at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, in Ignacio. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with the Monsignor Daniel Huber officiating.
Burial will follow at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.
