Donnie Louise Dalton Miller
Donnie Louise Dalton Miller, who was reared in the Animas Valley and was a graduate of Durango High School, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was 75. No cause of death was given.
Mrs. Miller was born in a Forest Service ranger station north of Pagosa Springs on Feb. 3, 1929, the daughter of Glen Dalton and Pearl Chism Baker. She married Don L. Miller in Farmington on Jan. 1, 1949.
Mrs. Miller was stricken by polio on Dec. 13, 1949. She was an outstanding seamstress.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Miller is survived by a son, Alan D. Miller of Farmington. She also is survived by a brother, John Dalton of Lakeside, Ariz.; a niece, Beata Codding of Glendale, Ariz.; and a nephew, Carl Dalton of Sierra Vista, Ariz. She leaves four grandchildren, Jamie Goodwin of Bloomfield, Travis Miller of Farmington, Justin Miller of Albuquerque and Alana Miller of Seminole, Okla. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Tanner and Rebecca Goodwin, Amanda Montoya, Adriana Miller, Justin Alan Miller, Madilyn Miller and Landon Miller.
A funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington in Farmington. Burial will be in Hermosa Park Cemetery.
Dona Harris Conley
Dona Harris Conley, 45, of Bayfield, died on Wednesday Jan. 7, 2004. She died in Bayfield of a blood clot, said her friend, Susie Jones.
Mrs. Conley was born March 14, 1958, in Paw Paw, Mich., the daughter of Virginia and Jack Harris. She grew up in Prescott, Ariz., and graduated from high school there. Then she began work as a checker at Safeway.
She moved with her son Johnathan to Pagosa Springs about 12 years ago. During her time there she attended a guide-dog school which enabled her to work with her dog, Ike. Mrs. Conley suffered from diabetes, which left her legally blind.
She moved to Durango where she married Lane Conley in 1994. The family lived in Durango, then outside Bayfield.
Mrs. Conley enjoyed the pine forests of Arizona and Colorado, four-wheeling, boating, and being with people and animals.
"Dona always had love for God, life and the people around her. The many health problems she endured just made her stronger," said her husband, Lane Conley. "She was a wonderful wife and mother and will be greatly missed by everyone she touched."
Jones said her friend was concerned with helping other people despite her own health problems. "She had many friends who will miss her dearly but who know she is totally healed in heaven," Jones said.
Mrs. Conley is survived by her husband of Bayfield; her son, Johnathan Conley of Bayfield; her parents of Meadview, Ariz.; and her brother and sister.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. March 13 at Community Bible Church in Pagosa Springs. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. For directions, call 731-2233.
Dorothy Jean Holt
Dorothy Jean Holt, 75, who lived in Durango for nearly 40 years, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at her home in Durango with her family. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Holt was born on April 23, 1928, in New Plymouth, Idaho.
She married Bill Holt in Twin Falls, Idaho, where they started their family. The Holts moved to Monte Vista in 1955 and they started their business, Holt Sheet Metal. As the family and business grew, they moved to Durango in 1965. The Holts put a great deal of energy into their family, business and close-knit community, said their daughter, Paula Mallett.
Mrs. Holt gave generously of her time in many ways, including volunteering with Sacred Heart Parish, Eventide Nursing Home and the Hospice Organization.
Her interests included gardening, knitting, baking bread, painting watercolors, calligraphy and spending time with her family near a bay in Washington state.
She was a grandmother of 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren to whom she demonstrated how to walk on stilts and play Ping-Pong.
"Her caring participation and zest for life will be missed by many," Mallett said.
She is survived by her husband William D. Holt; her children: Dennis Holt of New Hampshire, Leslie Schwartz of Washington, Ralph Holt of Durango and Paula Mallett of Durango.
A private memorial service will be held.

Janet Wood
A burial for Janet Wood, 49, who was found face down in the snow on the Animas River Trail and died on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center, will be at 10 a.m. today at Greenmount Cemetery.
The Rev. Ernest Finklea will officiate.
Ms. Wood was born Aug. 20, 1954. She had lived in Durango since 1993.
"She was a very loving person who always had a smile and was asking for our prayers," said Jim Sanderson, who maintains a ministry to the poor and homeless in Durango.
Sean M. Richardson
Sean M. Richardson, a Fort Lewis College sophomore, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, from injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 19.
Mr. Richardson was born July 6, 1984, in Denver to Michael Richardson and Beth D'Angelo.
In 2001, Mr. Richardson graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver. He moved to Durango in the fall of 2001 to study forestry at Fort Lewis College.
He played for the Fort Lewis College club rugby team. He also enjoyed fishing, hiking and spending time in the mountains, said his father, Michael Richardson.
"At times one considers to be alone in the wilderness," Michael Richardson said. "Sean considered it all the time."
Mr. Richardson is survived by his father, Michael Richardson of Denver; his mother, Beth D'Angelo of Hawaii; his grandparents, Donna Boykin of Aurora, Ben Boykin of Las Cruces, N.M., Betty Richardson of Denver and George Richardson of Drummond, Mont.; and two brothers, Christopher Richardson of Gunnison and Giavaoni D'Angelo of Hawaii.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday for Sean M. Richardson, a Fort Lewis College sophomore, who died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004. Mr. Richardson, 19, died from injuries suffered in a car accident on Mancos Hill.
The mass will be at St. Columba Church, 1830 East Second Ave.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Risen Christ, 3060 S. Monaco Parkway in Denver.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation in Denver.
Alberta Lee Stallings
Alberta Lee Stallings, who recently moved to Durango, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004. Mrs. Stallings was 85.
Born Alberta Lee Stewart on Oct. 22, 1918, near Sweetwater, Okla., to Eulalia (Cupp) Stewart and Calvin Stewart, Mrs. Stallings was raised in the Sweetwater area.
She married Thomas Willard Stallings on June 14, 1940, in Bulo, Okla. The couple lived near the Mayfield community. Later they lived in Layton, Utah; Tulsa, Okla; Ulysses, Kan.; Spearman, Texas; and Elk City, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by her children, Essica Williams of Durango, Tom Stallings of Branson, Mo., and Randy Stallings of Chicago; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Reed of Sweetwater; and a brother, Orville Stewart of Sweetwater.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Eastside Baptist Church in Elk City, Okla. The Rev. Henry Fletcher will officiate. Burial will follow in Mayfield Cemetery in Elk City.
Nina L. Bishop
Longtime Cortez resident, Nina L. Bishop, 74, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. She died of complications following lung cancer, said daughter Ronda Lancaster.
Mrs. Bishop was born on Feb. 9, 1930, in Pueblo, the daughter of Opal (Holybee) Cook and Jess B. Cook.
On April 2, 1947, she married Willard Bishop.
Mrs. Bishop was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, canning vegetables, crocheting and embroidering.
She was a skilled cook and gardener.
"All her grandkids and a lot of other people knew her as Grandma Nina," said Lancaster.
Mrs. Bishop was preceded in death by her grandson, Derek Lancaster, and her sister and brother, Vera Shaw and Jess Cook Jr.
She is survived by her husband of Cortez; her children, Linda Burns of Durango, Bruce Bishop of Etna, Calif., Barbara Mellott of Kenai, Alaska, Ronda Lancaster of Pleasant View and Kelly Candelaria of Cortez.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters, Bill Cook of Craig, Iona Stanley of Colorado Springs and Mabel Jeanne Hall of Pueblo.
Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Relief Society Room at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1700 Empire St., in Cortez.
A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church, then burial at the Cortez Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Derek Lancaster memorial fund at Citizens State Bank in Cortez or at First National Bank in Durango.
Harold C. "Harry" Nelson
Harold C. "Harry" Nelson, a resident of Durango and Bayfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver. He was 38. The cause of death was not given.
Mr. Nelson was born Aug. 13, 1965, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Roy and Joyce Nelson. The family moved to the Durango area when Mr. Nelson was 5 years old. He married Michelle Sower on Sept. 17, 1994, in Bayfield.
Mr. Nelson was an auto body technician at Pat Murphy Motors and owned his own body shop.
He was the owner of Mini-Merc and A&W/Long John Silvers in Bayfield.
Fishing, hunting, collecting cars and racing were hobbies enjoyed by Mr. Nelson.
"He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved children," Mr. Nelson's sister-in-law Brenda Yockstick said. "All the children called him Uncle Harry' and he was so proud of his daughter, Emily."
In addition to his wife, Mr. Nelson is survived by his mother, Joyce Mae Marhefki Kendrick of North Granby, Conn.; his father, Roy Nelson; and a daughter, Emily Nelson of Bayfield. He also is survived by sisters, Lisa Stanchfield of Canton, Conn., Jennifer Ryan of West Suffield, Conn., and Allison Kendrick of Unionville, Conn.; a brother Bill Kendrick of Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. A funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pine Valley Church of the Foursquare Gospel in Bayfield, with the Rev. Dan Straw officiating. Burial will be in Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Eugene M. Schick
Eugene M. Schick, a longtime resident of Pagosa Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, of natural causes at his home. He was 78.
Mr. Schick was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Denver to Joseph Schick and Dorothy Miller Schick.
He entered the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduating from Keenesburg High School in 1943.
He served in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Schick married Jacquelyn M. Kern in Keenesburg after his discharge. Before the couple moved to Pagosa Springs in 1955, Mr. Schick was a dairy farmer in Keenesburg.
In Pagosa Springs, the couple owned and managed Sunset Ranch, and he worked for the Colorado State Highway Department.
Mr. Schick also worked as a surveyor and did other jobs in construction.
In 1997, Mr. Schick received his 50-year pin from Brighton Masonic Lodge.
He was a member of the Keenesburg Methodist Church.
Mr. Schick loved to spend time with family and friends, and he traveled extensively with his wife. The couple visited all 50 states.
Mr. Schick also hunted and golfed. He was an avid sports fan. He followed the participation of his son and grandsons in high school and college football, basketball and baseball.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Schick is survived by his son, Greg Schick of Pagosa Springs, and his daughter, Kathy O'Donnell of Southport, N.C. He also leaves a brother, Joseph Schick of Denver.
Mr. Schick also is survived by grandsons Brad Schick of Durango and Matt Schick of Grand Rapids, Mich.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Duane Schick.
Mr. Schick also left seven step-grandchildren, Amy Potts, Britney Best, Brian and Lindsay Pergande, all of Colorado, Pete Pergande of Cincinnati, Tommy O'Donnell of Pittsburgh and Matt O'Donnell of Memphis, Tenn.
Seven step-great-grandchildren also survive Mr. Schick. They are Elias and Corey Pergande, Ashley and Ella Potts, and Jocelyn, Kayleigh and Colin O'Donnell.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday at the Community United Methodist Church in Pagosa Springs, with the Rev. Donald A. Ford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Schick Family Scholarship Fund established in Mr. Schick's name at Citizen's Bank or to the Upper San Juan Health Service District, 189 N. Pagosa St., Pagosa Springs 81147.
