Margie L. Martinez
Margie L. Martinez died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 75.
Mrs. Martinez was born March 9, 1927, in La Boca, the daughter of Abran and Pablita Lucero. She married Pete E. Martinez on April 26, 1943, in Blanco, N.M. She enjoyed crafts, cooking, taking care of children – whether hers or not, camping and fishing. She was a tireless Christian, and she enjoyed helping others.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Jerry Martinez of Grand Junction; four brothers, Johnny Lucero of Bayfield, Max Lucero of Pagosa Springs, Celestino Lucero of Grand Junction and Pete Lucero of Allison; two sisters, Viola Montoya and Elba Garcia, both of Allison; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. A funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Pine River Valley Baptist Church, 11942 Colorado Highway 172, Bayfield. The Rev. Dick Carmack will officiate. Burial will occur at Allison-Tiffany Cemetery in Allison.

Annetta ‘Pauline’ Cobb
Annetta "Pauline" Cobb died of natural causes Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in Tucson, Ariz. She was 88.
She was born in Clinton County, Ohio, and moved to Durango in 1941 when she married Elvin T. Cobb. After working as a case-worker for seven years, Mrs. Cobb became the director of the La Plata County Welfare Department in 1957. She retired from the department in 1973.
Mrs. Cobb volunteered much of her time to the community and her church. She was a member of the Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, greeted and helped with social functions. She was also active in Eastern Star, American Association of Retired Persons, the La Plata Council Agency on the Aging and the 55 Plus Center. After becoming a snowbird to Phoenix in the late 1980s, Mrs. Cobb moved to Phoenix in 1993 and later to Tucson.
Mrs. Cobb was always eager to help family, friends and neighbors. She helped raise three generations of Cobb children.
She is survived by one son, John F. Cobb; three granddaughters, Lisa "Cobb" O’Donnell, Christine "Cobb" Bryant and Jana Cobb; and two great-grandchildren.
Florence Emma Davis
Florence Emma Davis died of natural causes Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 92.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Mrs. Davis was born Oct. 17, 1910, in Reinbeck, Iowa, to Theodore and Mary (Thiessen) Brandt. She married Robert Hill Davis on May 11, 1941, in Reinbeck, Iowa. She lived in Manchester, Iowa, and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Congregation Church and other organizations.
The family moved to Longmont, Colo., in 1954, where Mrs. Davis was active in the First Congregation Church, a secretary with Longmont School District and KLMO radio station. She helped her husband run the Davis Jewelry Store until his death on June 4, 1966. Mrs. Davis lived in Longmont until 2000 when she moved to Durango.
She is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline M. Van Lunsen of Durango; two grandchildren, Jonathan Van Lunsen of New York, N.Y., and Jennifer Van Lunsen of Denver; a brother, Robert Brandt of Reinbeck, Iowa; a sister, La Verna Murphy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vernon Vincent Leithauser
Vernon Vincent Leithauser died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, from a heart attack. He was 75.
Mr. Leithauser was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Durango. He attended school at St. Columba in Durango until the family moved to California.
Mr. Leithauser served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, and received the Purple Heart.
He received his master’s degree from Western State College in Gunnison. He taught school at Smiley Junior High in Durango and at Durango High School. He later became superintendent of schools in Bayfield.
Mr. Leithauser also worked as a contract painter and worked with several local friends.
He is survived by two sisters, Kathryn Mee of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Betty Seiple of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; six children, Greg Leithauser of Silverton, Connie Philpot of Clinton, Wyo., Verna Lee Warren of Afton, Wyo., Joe Leithauser of Strasburg, Colo., Karen Leithauser of Denver and Will Leithauser of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.
Mr. Leithauser was cremated, and a memorial service will be held in late spring for all who would like to attend.
Raymond A. ‘Jack’ Rodman
Raymond A. "Jack" Rodman, a Bayfield native, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango from natural causes. He was 87.
Mr. Rodman was born May 17, 1915, in the Bayfield area to Vernon and Emma Rodman. He joined the Civil Conservation Corps and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Eula Lois (Vanderlip) Rodman on Feb. 26, 1977, in Durango. He worked for 42 years for the Colorado Department of Transportation until he retired in 1981.
"He was pretty much everybody’s friend," Mrs. Rodman said. "I thought he was a very great guy."
Mr. Rodman enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, fixing things, attending church and being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
"We referred to him sometimes as Mr. Fix-it, because he could just about fix anything," Mrs. Rodman said.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Rodman, of Bayfield; two sons, Randy Rodman, of Memphis, Tenn., and Danny Rodman, of Durango; two stepdaughters, Judy Decker, of Durango, and Pat Russell, of Durango; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Rodman.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Florida Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Calvin Peter Csatlos
Calvin Peter Csatlos, a Durango resident from 1989 to 1992, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Hospice of St. John in Lakewood, Colo., from natural causes. He was 75.
He was born Jan. 23, 1927, in Charlotte, Mich. He married Dale Anne Piccoli on Aug. 8, 1978, in Littleton, Colo.
"He never gave up. He was a fighter," Mrs. Csatlos said. "He just lived life to the fullest, and he expected great things."
Mr. Csatlos graduated from Michigan State University, and he worked for the Van Schaack Company. He later started a commercial appraising business with Mrs. Csatlos in Lakewood.
Mr. Csatlos enjoyed music and he played the cornet, and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Arvada, Colo. He also served in the Air Force from 1944 to 1946.
He enjoyed spending time in Durango, exploring the backcountry with his golden retriever. He also liked spending time in the Colorado backcountry with his horse.
He is survived by his wife, Dale Anne Csatlos, of Arvada; two sons, Kevin Csatlos, of Phoenix, and Jeff Rodewald, of San Diego; and two daughters, Laurie Csatlos and Margo Price, both of Dallas.
A memorial service was Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church in Arvada.

Patricia Ann Coker
Patricia Ann Coker, a former Durango resident, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Grand Junction after a heart attack. She was 62.
Mrs. Coker was born Feb. 17, 1940, in Montrose to Henry and Ada Wilkinson. She attended school in Durango, and received training as a nurse in Denver. She served in the Navy as a nurse for two years. She later married Ronald Coker in Durango, where she worked at both Community Hospital and Mercy Medical Center as a respiratory therapist.
She and her husband moved to Grand Junction in 1982, where she resided until her death.
"She was one of the best daughters one could ever have," said her mother, Ada Wilkinson, of Durango.
She is survived by her husband; her mother; her daughter, Cynthia McDermott of Grand Junction; eight grandchildren; four stepchildren; and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel in Grand Junction. A graveside service will occur at Greenmount Cemetery at a later date.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery.

Alice Marie Fisher
Alice Marie Fisher, of Midland, Texas, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 at the Hospice House in Odessa, Texas. She was 83.
Mrs. Fisher was born June 7, 1919, in Nazareth, Texas, to Joseph and Loretta Guggemos. She married John C. Fisher on Jan. 29, 1940, in Borger, Texas.
Eight of her 10 children were Texas Aggies, and in 1968 she was named Texas A&M mother of the year. She was a member of the Southside Lion’s Club and the Women’s Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. After raising her family, she was a caregiver for many years, providing many hours of volunteer work as well as practical nursing care for friends and others. She was a member of Our Lady of San Juan Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Franklin A. Fisher.
She is survived by eight sons, Eugene T. Fisher of Durango, John C. Fisher of Peoria, Ill., Joseph H. Fisher of Dimebox, Texas, Thomas E. Fisher of Manhattan Beach, Calif., James R. Fisher of Bellaire, Texas, Jerry L. Fisher of Midland, Texas, Michael J. Fisher of Austin, Texas, and Patrick K. Fisher of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Susanne M. Miller of Durango; four sisters, Rosmary Wilhelm of Nazareth, Texas, Rita Hoffman of El Paso, Texas, Stella Shirley of Friona, Texas, Betty Bartels of Hereford, Texas; 25 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and nine step-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of San Juan Catholic Church in Midland, Texas. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland.

Ellen Carbis McConnel
Ellen Carbis McConnel, former Durango resident, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Aztec. She was 73.
Ellen McConnel was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Durango. She grew up in the Durango area and graduated from Durango High School. She retired from Four Corners Health Care Center in 1997 and moved to Bloomfield, where she was active in the Aztec Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by a son, James McConnel.
She is survived by two sons, Doug and Bill McConnel, both of Bloomfield; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Bloomfield.
Edward J. Martinez Sr.
Edward J. Martinez Sr. died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, in Salt Lake City of a heart attack. He was 65.
Mr. Martinez was born August 16, 1937, in Durango to Josephine Pacheco.
He married Frances Medina on Feb. 24, 1959. He retired from Littons System (Northrop Grumman). His hobbies included playing the guitar and going to Wendover and winning. He loved his dogs, Pancheta and Spud. He loved spending time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Charlene Martinez, Marie Martinez-Slack and Margaret Montańo; a son, Eddie J. Martinez Jr; an adopted son and daughter, Robert and Bernadette; his brother, Tony Quintana; 14 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 715 W. 300 N., Salt Lake City. A viewing and rosary will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, and one hour before the funeral. Burial will occur at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S., after the service.
Jamie Cowan Crowley
Jamie Cowan Crowley, lifelong area resident, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at his home in Eastland, Utah, after a battle with cancer. He was 85.
Mr. Crowley was born Feb. 6, 1917 in Yellow Jacket, to Rufus and Buna (Cowan) Crowley. He married Ruth Moss, of Pleasant View, on July 2, 1938. He was a farmer, awarded Farmer of the Year twice by the San Juan Soil Conservation Service, and he raised cattle all his life. He also had a construction company with his son Gary.
He enjoyed hunting with his family and friends. He planned to hunt on Elk Mountain this year with his son and grandson. He enjoyed people, especially children. He and his wife had spent winters in Arizona for the past 20 years.
He served on the San Juan County School Board and the Soil Conservation Board. During the early 1950s he was president of the San Juan County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Followers of Christ Church in Pleasant View.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Janice Bobo and Marsha Ashburn, both of Durango, and Lavon Harkendorff of Cortez; two sons, Jim Crowley of Cortez and Gary Crowley of Eastland, Utah; eight grandchildren including Carli Harkendorff of Cortez, and Matthew and Daniel Ashburn, both of Durango; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, J.W. Crowley of Cortez.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Eastland Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Raymond Boyd will officiate. Interment will occur at the Eastland Cemetery.
