Rose Cic
Rose Cic, of Durango, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 80.
Mrs. Cic was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Wheeling, W. Va., the daughter of Stephen and Rozalia Orban. She was the wife of the late Jack Cic, a World War II Army veteran.
While residing in Cleveland, Ohio, she volunteered at the United Services Organization during World War II. She and her family moved to Hollywood, Calif., in 1957. She retired from the hardware department of Sears Roebuck after 22 years of service. In her retirement, she worked alongside her daughter, Janice, and son-in-law, Larry, at Alchemy II in Los Angeles.
She visited Las Vegas often, and enjoyed baking for her family and friends. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, making crafts, working puzzles, playing bingo and cards, and listening to country and western music. She was a long-time, loyal fan of Jimmy Stewart, whom she had the pleasure of meeting.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice Larsen, of Durango; two grandsons, Joshua Larsen, of San Francisco and Matthew Larsen, of Durango; a sister, Elizabeth Trabert, of Cleveland, Ohio; many nieces and nephews; and surviving relatives.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday.
James W. Salassi
James W. Salassi died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 82.
Mr. Salassi was born Nov. 2, 1920, in Covington, La. He grew up in St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. He went to college and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. He received a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific. He entered private business in California after being discharged. He moved to Arizona in 1989 and to Bayfield in 1999. He maintained strong ties with his class of ‘42 Academy classmates.
"In the blowing of the wind, and the chill of the winter, we remember him," said his daughter, Ellen Salassi, on behalf of the Salassi family.
He is survived by three daughters, Ellen Clark Salassi, of Martinez, Calif., Carol Elizabeth Salassi, of Pomona, Calif. and Mamie Salassi Limonchi, of Wildomar, Calif.; two sons, James W. Salassi Jr., of Hesperia, Calif. and Pete Salassi, of Wrightwood, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will he held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center Chapel, 375 East Park Ave.
Ellamay Cason-Keeter
Ellamay Cason-Keeter, a former Durango resident, died January 30, 2003, in Payson Ariz., after an extended illness.
Mrs. Cason-Keeter was born February 4, 1917, in Durango to James and Ida Henderson. She married Vernon Cason on April 18, 1934. They lived in the family home in Durango for more than 50 years. Mr. Cason died August 2, 1987. In 1990, she married Arthur Keeter. They moved to Tonto Basin, Ariz., and have lived there for four years.
She worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Durango. She and Mr. Cason were active members of the First Baptist Church.
"The one thing she enjoyed was singing in the church choir, because she loved music from the time she was a child. When she was young, she would go anywhere there was a piano so she could learn to play. She taught herself and was quite a pianist," said her daughter, Ellavern Adcock, of Dolores.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon Cason; and a son, Kenneth Cason.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Keeter; three sons, the Rev. Dennis Cason, of Delta, Utah, Richard "Mac" Cason, of Durango, and Jim Prentice, of Springfield Mo; one daughter, Ellavern Adcock, of Dolores; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. The Rev. Dennis Cason, her son, will officiate.
Ben Edmond Lopez
Ben Edmond Lopez died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in Salt Lake City, after a brief illness. He was 68.
Mr. Lopez was born May 17, 1934, in Durango to Benito and Aurianita Vigil Lopez.
He was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Salt Lake City. He enjoyed fishing, walking and spending time with his family.
"He was a hard worker," said his brother, Sam Lopez, of Durango.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter, Gail; one grandson and two step-grandsons.
He is survived by a son, Stephen Lopez, of Boise, Idaho; a brother, Sam Lopez, of Durango; six grandchildren, Angela Lopez, Michele Lopez and Carmelita Lopez, all of Kingman, Ariz., and Teresa Abernathy, Felicia Abernathy and Monica Abernathy, all of Salt Lake City; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass and interment have occurred in Utah.
Larry L. Logan
Larry L. Logan, of Montrose, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in the Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose of natural causes. He was 70.
Mr. Logan was born July 17, 1932, in Durango, the son of Kennith Tobin and Zelma Elizabeth (Zink) Logan. He grew up in Durango and graduated from Durango High School. He attended the old Fort Lewis College in Hesperus. He married Nelda "Jean" Nelson on Nov. 21, 1951 in Durango.
He worked as a maintenance superintendent with the Colorado Department of Highways, and was with the department for almost 32 years. He and his wife moved from Ridgway to Montrose in 1990.
He was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks in Ouray.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a handyman, and also enjoyed reading.
"He loved the outdoors. He loved Durango. He loved to be around his kids and his grandkids, and they loved to be around him," said his son, Robert B. Logan, of Durango. His family has been in the area since 1885, first in Silverton, then in Durango, Logan said.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years; two sons, Richard M. Logan, of Wenatchee, Wash., and Robert B. Logan, of Durango; a daughter, Elizabeth Kay, of Greeley; five grandchildren, Lacie Eyl, of Greeley, Aaron Eyl, of Grand Junction, Joshua, James and Joseph Logan, all of Durango; and one brother, Dave Logan, of Montrose.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The Rev. John Mocko will officiate.

Dorothy V. Canterbury
Dorothy V. Canterbury, a former Durango resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center from emphysema. She was 60.
Mrs. Canterbury was born June 5, 1942, in Durango to Chester and Mildred Jackson. She married Kenneth Canterbury at the Pine River Valley Church in Bayfield on June 7, 1958.
Mrs. Canterbury was raised in the Durango area and attended school at Long Lane School on the Florida Mesa and Durango High School. She sold Avon products for 25 years and was an avid Denver Broncos fan.
"She was a wonderful woman," her husband, Kenneth, said. "She would do anything for anyone in sickness or health."
She loved the outdoors including hunting, camping and picnicking.
"She was a good neighbor and friend," Kenneth said. "She never met someone she couldn’t be friends with."
Mrs. Canterbury is survived by her husband, of Ignacio; three sons, Mike Canterbury, Kenny Canterbury and Kevin Canterbury, all of Ignacio; three brothers Leon Jackson and Jerry Jackson, both of Durango, and Chester Jackson, of Ignacio; six grandchildren, Chandra Canterbury, Kendra Canterbury, Tasha Canterbury, Kenny Canterbury, Krysta Canterbury and Kelton Canterbury, all of Ignacio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Foursquare Gospel Church. Pastor Bob Kujath, of Pine Valley Church of the Foursquare Gospel, will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.
