Joe Sylvian F. Martinez

Joe Sylvian F. Martinez, a former Durango resident, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Manor Health Care Center in Albuquerque, of natural causes. He was 83.

Mr. Martinez was born April 29, 1919, to Sylviano and Manualita Martinez. He moved to Albuquerque in 1996, a year after the death of his wife.

He enjoyed fishing, playing guitar and spending time with his family. He was a Catholic. He was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Estefanita Martinez; and a son, Matthew Martinez.

He is survived by his sons Joe (Orlando) Martinez of Durango, Augustine Martinez of Albuquerque, Mario Martinez of Ohio and Rick Martinez of Albuquerque; five daughters, Betty Patno, of New Hampshire, MaryLee Maestas, of New Hampshire, Sylvia Martinez, of Massachusetts, Darlene Tura, of Okinawa, Japan, Caroline Martinez, of Albuquerque, and Mary Lou Eden, of Utah; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, 254 East Fifth Ave. His ashes will be buried at Greenmount Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Gallegos will officiate.

Marguerite Augusta Rowe

Marguerite Augusta Rowe, a lifelong Durango resident, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center of natural causes. She was 90.

Mrs. Rowe was born May 24, 1912, in the Florida Mesa area, the daughter of Fred and Estella (Arndt) Griffith. She married Edgar A. Rowe in 1933 in Durango. She was a granddaughter to one of Durango’s first physicians, Dr. D.W. Griffith, who was hired by the railroad in Durango.

As a young woman, she enjoyed horseback riding and skiing. She enjoyed dancing and traveling, crocheting, knitting, sewing, gardening and canning.

"She was a loving mother and grandmother, and wife," said her daughter, Audrey Sue Newberry, of Westminster.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on Aug. 27, 1969.

She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Sue Newberry, of Westminster; two sons, Gordon Rowe, of Vail, and Kenneth Rowe, of Durango; eight grandchildren, Richard Biggs, of New Waverly, Texas, Vicki Ferrin, of Grand Junction, Julie Ince, of Hotchkiss, Jeannie Rutherford, of Mantika, Calif., Corbin Rowe, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Tiffin Rowe, of Vail, Dustin Rowe, of Westminster and Wendy Rowe, of Arvada; 15 great-grandchildren; and a cousin.

Memorial services are pending. A cremation is planned.

Gary L. Hammons

Gary L. Hammons, a longtime Durango resident, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Indio, Calif. He was 72.

Memorial services are pending.

No further information was available.

Berkeley Carlton Bryant

Berkeley Carlton Bryant died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in Durango from cancer. He was 67.

Mr. Bryant was born Nov. 19, 1935, in Los Angeles to Gordon and Dorathee Bryant.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, and he worked as an artist, an architect and a carpenter. His true passion was working as a guide in the canyons in Utah. Mr. Bryant used his carpentry skills to stabilize Indian ruins. He was an avid golfer, and he also enjoyed caring for animals and spending time outdoors.

"He had a wonderful sense of humor, and everyone enjoyed that," said his wife, Alta Marie Bryant.

He is survived by his wife, Alta Marie Bryant, of Hesperus; a son, Jeff Perry, of Cortez; two daughters, Ellen Stuart Bryant and Caroline Elizabeth Bryant, both of Fort Collins; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held at a future time, and cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Contributions may be sent to the Durango Cancer Center, 3801 Main. Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Shirley Ann Norton

Shirley Ann Norton died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at her home in Durango of natural causes. She was 89.

Mrs. Norton was born June 11, 1913, in Chillicothe, Mo., the daughter of John and Cora Mae Mumpower. She married Mark Norton July 3, 1938, in Pagosa Springs.

A homemaker who lived in Durango most of her life, she enjoyed shopping, cooking, reading, Dr. Pepper and cheese enchiladas.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Norton, of Bayfield, and John Norton, of Phoenix; two daughters, Cookie Hoselton, of Durango, and Rebecca Tooley, of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Kim Willis, of Denver, Jackie Jacobsen, of Phoenix, Traci McKnight, Rick Hoselton and Ron Hoselton, all of Bayfield, Jeff Norton, of Humble, Texas, Amy Cyr, of Byers, and Mark Tooley and Cynthia Tooley, both of Kansas City, Mo.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Pine River Valley Cemetery in Bayfield. The Rev. Scott Kujath will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Gretchen Osterhoudt

Gretchen Osterhoudt died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, in Durango. She was 91.

Mrs. Osterhoudt was born Gretchen Marie Zierath on Dec. 13, 1911, in Sheboygan, Wis. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1933. She worked for Bucyrus-Erie in Milwaukee. She married Walter Osterhoudt on May 14, 1935, in Pittsburgh.

The Osterhoudt family lived in Houston for 16 years. The family moved to Durango in 1951. Mrs. Osterhoudt was active in the American Association of University Women, the Animas Valley Grange, the Durango Petroleum Club, the Republican Party and P.E.O.

"She was an enthusiastic advocate of high-quality education for everyone," said son Hans Osterhoudt. "She was a loving and very intelligent woman."

She is survived by her sons, Hans Osterhoudt of Spenceport, N.Y., and Pete Osterhoudt of Walsenburg, three grandsons, David Osterhoudt of Rochester, N.Y.; Thomas Osterhoudt of Stafford, Va.; Curtis Osterhoudt of Pullman, Wash.; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marian Zierath of Tiburon, Calif., and Charlotte Sirks of Riverside, Calif.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence, 201 E. 12th St., Durango, CO 81301, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Elaine Carol Rhodes

Elaine Carol Rhodes died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, in Durango, of natural causes. She was 75.

Mrs. Rhodes was born March 21, 1927, in Chappel, Neb., the daughter of Herman and Angie Rundquist. She was the eighth child of nine.

"Elaine Rhodes was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by all," said her oldest son, Dell Rhodes, of Boulder.

She was preceded in death in 1992 by her husband, Robert W. Rhodes.

She is survived by four sons, Dell Rhodes and wife, Susan, of Boulder, Parnell Rhodes and wife, Cathy, of Bayfield, Cordell Rhodes, of Houston, Texas, and Carl Rhodes and wife, Sherry, of Oxford; and six grandchildren, April and Derek Rhodes of Boulder, Carl and Chris Rhodes of Bayfield, and Drake and Suzann Rhodes of Oxford.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Fort Logan Cemetery in Denver.

Marshall Allen ‘Mac’ Caudill

Marshall Allen "Mac" Caudill, a longtime Durango resident, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at his home in Durango from injuries suffered in an accident. He was 55.

Mr. Caudill was born April 26, 1947, in Tazwell, Va., the son of Frazier and Evelyn Caudill. He married Jackie Caudill on Aug. 18, 1990, at Eden, Utah. Mr. Caudill moved to Durango in 1980, and he has worked for La Plata Electric Association since 1981.

Mr. Caudill was devoted to his children and family, and volunteered whenever he was needed in any role.

"He was just really great about helping others," said his wife, Jackie Caudill, of Durango.

Mr. Caudill enjoyed hiking, and participated in equestrian activities including competitive trail rides with his horse. He also enjoyed and animal husbandry. He enjoyed restoring and repairing both vintage and general use vehicles.

He was a member of the National Audubon Society. He helped with installing wildlife snag trees, building birdhouses and installing benches along the River Trail at the Durango Fish Hatchery.

He had the ability to find good deals on anything. "He was a bargain hunter extraordinaire," said Jackie Caudill.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Jackie Caudill, of Durango; two sons, Eric Caudill, of Elko, Nev., and Ben Caudill, of Wilmington, Del.; three daughters, Melisa Domino, of Wilmington, Del., Briana Caudill and Emma Caudill, both of Durango; four brothers, Douglas Caudill, of Hockessin, Del., Garry Caudill, of Newark, Del., Roger Caudill, of St. Paulos Island, N.C., and Kenny Caudill, of Middletown, Del.; a sister, Pam Barr, of Bear, Del.; two grandsons, Avery Domino, of Wilmington, Del., and Ethan Lewis; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ned Amstutz will officiate.

Arthur D. ‘Art’ Robbins

Arthur D. "Art" Robbins, an artist, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at his home in Scottsbluff, Neb., of cancer. He was 78.

Mr. Robbins was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Hamden, Ohio, the son of Roy E. and Buelah (Huffman) Robbins. He was a 1943 graduate of North High School in Columbus, Ohio. He attended the V12 Officer’s Training school at Kansas University at Lawrence, Kan. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the USS Chara, during World War II.

He married Marjorie Wright, of Atwood, Kan., in November 1944. The couple had three sons while living in California. The family moved from California to Durango, where he was a wrangler at the Golden Horseshoe Dude Ranch. Later, he had an art studio and gallery.

Later, the family moved to Greeley. After a year, the family moved to Scottsbluff, Neb., in 1968. There he owned and operated Contemporary Litho, a printing shop.

Mr. Robbins painted his entire adult life, and he painted much of the time upon his retirement.

Mr. Robbins is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Wright, of Scottsbluff, Neb.; three sons, Joe P. Robbins, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Tom E. Robbins, of Oakland, Calif., and Dan P. Robbins, of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Phyllis Lee, of Arlington, Va.; two grandchildren, Anne B. Robbins and Benjamin W. Robbins, both of Steamboat Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff, Neb. Robert G. Wright will officiate. Cremation has taken place. His cremains will be placed at the Atwood, Kan. cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice or CASA of Scotts Bluff County. Condolences may be sent to jfh@actcom.net.

Lester J. Tinker

Lester J. Tinker, a Durango native, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in Durango of natural causes. He was 69.

Mr. Tinker was born July 17, 1933, in Durango to John and Helen Tinker.

Mr. Tinker attended college at Denver University, CU, Colorado A & M, and Fort Lewis College.

Mr. Tinker was a photographer by trade.

He is survived by his brother Donald I. Tinker, of Longmont, Colo., numerous cousins and three nephews.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Florida Cemetery. The Rev. Myron Darmour will be officiating.

Louie Mendoza

Louie Mendoza died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Pagosa Springs. He was 63. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Mendoza was born Oct. 2, 1939, in San Diego, Calif. He was a contractor.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Dos Santos of Hawaii; two sons, Danny Mendoza of Durango, and David Mendoza of Pagosa Springs; two brothers, Al Mendoza of San Diego, Calif., and Danny Mendoza of Denver; one sister, Tina Mendoza of San Diego, Calif.; four grandsons, Nathan Mendoza of Pagosa Springs, Robert Mendoza, Joshua Mendoza and Daniel Mendoza Jr., all of Durango; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 451 Lewis, Pagosa Springs.
