Deven Douglas Shaline
Deven Douglas Shaline, a mechanic, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at his home in Sacramento, Calif. He was 35.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Shaline was born March 31, 1968, in Oakland, Calif., and moved with his family to Durango in 1977.
He enjoyed music of all kinds, and he taught himself to play both classical and electric guitar. He worked as a mechanic, primarily on large hydraulic lifts.
He is survived by his son, Jacob Nathaniel Rossbo, of Sacramento, Calif.; his mother and stepfather, Karen Young and Dennis Young, both of Durango; his brother, Deck W. Shaline, of Durango; his half-sister, Meghan Shaline, of Sacramento, Calif.; his grandparents, Millie and W.T. Scott, both of Durango, and Bettie and Willis Young, both of Rangely; and a nephew and a niece.
A service will be held in Sacramento.
A service also will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 332 E. 11th St. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Clara Espinosa Gomez
Clara Espinosa Gomez, of Aztec, died Saturday, April 19, 2003. The cause of death was not disclosed. She was 67.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Gomez, of Aztec; four sons, Rick Gomez, Charles Gomez, Greg Gomez and Gerald Gomez; four daughters, Jolyn Owens, Clarice Gomez, Krista Kelley and Michal Erwin; her mother, Verna Espinosa; and 11 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara.
A rosary will be at 7 tonight at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Aztec. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the same location. Burial will be at the Aztec Community Cemetery.
Carl Lloyd William Sr.
Carl Lloyd William Sr. died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Hesperus. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 54.
Mr. William was born Aug. 14, 1948, in Durango to Arabella William. He attended high school in Ignacio and at the Tribal School. He worked all his life as a silversmith.
"My father was a real lively person with a real sense of humor who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping," said son, Carl S. William.
Mr. William is survived by his mother, Arabella William of Durango; a son Carl S. William of Ignacio; two brothers, Delbert Cuthair and Danny Bean, both of Ignacio; an aunt, Annie Bettini of Durango; and four grandchildren, Iesha, Stephanie, Carol and Carl III William of Ignacio.
A rosary is scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary in Durango. A graveside service is set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Ouray Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Deacon Toby Romero officiating.
Robin Coleen Abernathy Sharp
Robin Coleen Abernathy Sharp, of Highlands Ranch, died Friday, April 18, 2003, of cancer. She was 37.
Mrs. Sharp was born to Bill and Betty Abernathy in Bayfield on Sept. 25, 1965. She graduated from Bayfield High School in 1984 and from Fort Lewis College in 1988 with a degree in history. She met Lyle Sharp while in college and the two married in 1992.
Mrs. Sharp worked for many years as an independent distributor for Dallas-based Premier Design, a manufacturer of costume jewelry. She worked out of her home.
"Robin had charisma. She was a people person. She could walk into a room and when she left she would know everyone and everyone would know her and never forget her," Mr. Sharp said.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle; a son, Ryan, 6; a daughter, Engle, 3; her mother, Betty Abernathy of Bayfield; two brothers, Jerry Abernathy of Bayfield and Dan Abernathy of Pine Dale, Wyo.; and two sisters, Miriam Wilson of La Jara and Linda Abernathy of Brighton.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield, with the Rev. Dan Straw officiating. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View Community Church in Highlands Ranch. The church is at the corner of Broadway and Highlands Ranch Parkway.
Michael Neal Fleming
Michael Neal Fleming, of Mancos, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at his home in Mancos. He was 59.
Mr. Fleming was born at Wausau, Wis., on Oct. 19, 1943, t.he son of Dr. Neal Eugene and Caryl Seville (Crawford) Fleming.
After moving to the Mancos Valley in 1990, Mr. Fleming became an integral part of the community. He was president of the board of directors of the Mancos Valley Bank, treasurer for the board of directors of the Valley Inn Nursing Home and Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, of Farmington, N.M., a board member of the Mancos Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Jackson Lake Water Board.
He was a 10-year member of the Vern Koppenhafer Cattle Drive and, in 2000, was named Mancos Citizen of the Year. He also held the title of captain of the Mancos Colorado Golf Team in Tomahawk, Wis.
"He gave his all to really help, he was a phenomenal person," said Stephen Fleming, his brother.
He is survived by his wife, Carole Louise (Newill) Fleming, of Mancos; his son, Dr. Neal Jeffery Fleming, of St. Paul, Minn.; his daughter, Theresa Caryl, of Dixon, Ill.; two brothers, Joseph Eugene Fleming, of Dixon, Ill., and Stephen Jeffrey Fleming, of Amboy, Ill.; and a sister, Patricia Caryl Lillyman, of Dixon, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Mancos Valley Bank to benefit the Mancos Volunteer Fire Department.
A celebration of life will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at his home, the Cassiday Canyon Ranch, 38975 Colorado Highway 184, Mancos. It is open to the public.

Shelley Vanderford Burgett
Shelly Vanderford Burgett, of Durango, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, of advanced emphysema. She was 58.
Mrs. Burgett was born Jan. 3, 1945. She grew up in Las Animas, where she was active in Rainbows. She married Carroll Burgett in 1962 and lived in Wichita, Kan., Chicago, and New Jersey. She was active in judo, and earned a first-degree black belt.
In 1981 she moved to Durango with her family, where she was active with the Eastern Star. She participated in amateur radio as NØWFZ. She also helped with her husband’s business.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Carroll Burgett, of Durango; two daughters, Ricki Burns of Durango, and Samantha Hamilton of San Jose, Calif.; and a son, Antony Burgett of Denver. No services have been planned. The family will spread her ashes at a later date.
Evelyn Don
Evelyn Don, 89, died April 15, 2003, in Plano, Texas, of natural causes.
She was born on May 26, 1913, in Crawford to Ed and Jennie TeGrotenhuis of Hotchkiss.
She married Leslie J. Don on April 15, 1940, in Durango.
Mrs. Don was a beautician at Elite Beauty Salon on Main Street in Durango in the late 1930s.
She worked at Graden’s Department Store on Main St. in various capacities for 18 years, from the late 1960s to the late ’80s.
"She will be remembered by her large extended family and group of friends as a person who could always be counted on for support and guidance with a loving heart and unique sense of humor and wisdom," said her son, Ed Don, of Durango.
Mrs. Don is preceded in death by her husband and a son, Leslie Alan Don.
She is survived by her twin sister, Medline Ashby of Amarillo, Texas, siblings Mabel Barton of Grand Junction, Marie Wetterich of Cedaredge, Bob TeGrotenhuis of Huntington Beach, Calif., Kenneth TeGrotenhuis of Hotchkiss, and Alice Holt of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Dorothy Sparry of Plano, Texas; a son, Ed Don, of Durango; grandchildren CaraLee Sparry of Brooklyn, NY, Jennifer Bixby of Little Elm, Texas, and Steven Sparry of Portland, Ore.; great-grandchildren Taylor Tune and Jacob Bixby of Little Elm, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Crawford at a later date. Contributions to a charity of your choice are encouraged.
Olive Edna Blain Dillon
Olive Edna Blain Dillon, a former Ignacio resident, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 91.
Mrs. Dillon was born Feb. 27, 1912, in Esbon, Kan., to Milton and Irene Blain. She married Lester Vernon Dillon on April 1, 1931, in Burr Oak, Kan.
They moved to Colorado in 1936.
She enjoyed gardening, needlework, reading and traveling. She visited 47 states.
She had been active in the Happy Homemakers Extension Club, the Friendship Circle of the Presbyterian Church and the Council of Aging.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Clinton Vernon Dillon.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Rinker of Kentucky, and Donna Egger of Ignacio; 23 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ignacio Community Church, 405 Browning Ave., Ignacio. Deacon Mike Darmour will officiate. Cremation will occur at Cortez Four Corners Crematory. Interment will be in Page, Ariz., at a later date.

Wilfred Leigh Harris
Wilfred Leigh Harris, of Durango, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center of lung cancer. He was 72.
Mr. Harris was born Jan. 27, 1931, in Boston, the son of Wilfred Harris Sr. and Helen S. Williams Harris. He worked as a chef during his lifetime.
He is survived by his children, Warren Harris, Wesley Harris and Jacqueline Harris.
Michelle Morey
Michelle Morey, of Durango, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, of cancer. She was 41.
Ms. Morey was born Aug. 9, 1961, in Santa Monica, Calif. She grew up in Hawaii on the island of Kauai, where she was a gymnast and a dancer. After moving to Durango about 10 years ago, she became active in the community. She worked at Carver Brewing Co., KDUR-FM, Fort Lewis College and the Durango Film Society.
She is survived by her son, Max Dolso-Morey of Durango; her partner, Danielle Booth of Durango; mother and stepfather Jolly and Donald Bodine; father and stepmother Tom and Marcia Morey; sister Melinda Morey; and many friends.
The public memorial gathering for Michelle Morey has been moved to the Strater Hotel Diamond Circle Theater. It will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following organizations:

Jane C. (Garcia) Tuck
Jane C. (Garcia) Tuck died Saturday, April 12, 2003, in San Juan County, N.M. She was 56. The cause of death was a car accident.
Mrs. Tuck was born June 26, 1946, in Arboles. She married Joe E. Tuck Sr. on April 9, 1964, in Durango.
She was an unbaptized publisher in the Bloomfield congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She is survived by her husband of San Juan County, N.M.; a son, Darrel Ray Tuck of Arboles; a daughter, Sandra of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Darrel Ray Jr. and April Dawn Trayler; and a half-sister, Ester Pena.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4 Road 2595, Aztec. Richard Parry, of the Ignacio Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, will officiate.
Lillie Belle Dean
Lillie Belle Dean, a longtime Durango resident, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She died from natural causes, according to her family. She was 90.
Miss Dean was born Oct. 4, 1912, in Fannin County, Texas, to William and Lenora Edna Clouse. She moved to Durango, where she attended Durango schools and lived for most of her life.
"Everyone that knew her loved her," said her daughter, Colleen Smith.
She is survived by four daughters, Lou Wendel of Naples, Fla., Gladys Preston of Great Falls, Mont., Eve Wick of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Colleen Smith of Clovis, N.M.; one son, Arthur Jefcoat of Bovine, Texas; two stepdaughters, Doris Guymon of Durango, and Anne Sayne of Whitefish, Mont.; two sisters, Edna Schaaf of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Nadine Martinsen of Marrieta, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Jim Jefcoat, Tom Brodrick and Richard Claude Brodrick; and three spouses, Walter Jefcoat, Claude Brodrick and Adrian Dean.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Durango Ward. Bishop James Cooper will officiate. Interment of ashes will be at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield after the services. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
