Hattie Vera Harbstreet Byrd

Hattie Vera Harbstreet Byrd, of Kansas City, Mo., died, Friday, April 25, 2003. She was 104.

Mrs. Byrd was born Sept. 12, 1898, near Hartwell, Mo., to Mary and Otto Harbstreet. She married Clarence C. Byrd, a resident of the same area and a veteran of World War I.

A victim of mustard gas attacks, Mr. Byrd moved to Colorado for his health after the war. He homesteaded near Durango, and he brought Mrs. Byrd to the homestead as a bride. The couple had two children while living there. The Byrds moved back to Missouri in 1937. In 1971 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1973.

She is survived by a daughter, Norma Smith of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Richard Byrd of Durango; two granddaughters, Dr. Mana Hobson of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Marian Bock of New Madrid, Mo.; three grandsons, Mark Wille of Flagstaff, Ariz., David Byrd of Little Rock, Ark., and Chris Byrd of Fort Worth, Texas; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services have taken place.

Judy K. Owens

Judy K. Owens, formerly of Salida, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at her home in Durango. She was 61.

Mrs. Owens was born Oct. 13, 1941, in Lincoln, Neb., to Earl and Verla (Van Hook) Boline. She married Kenneth Owens on July 4, 1985, in Salida.

Her interests included quilting, traveling with her husband and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Antique Tractor Clubs in Delta and the Four Corners area.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jerald J. Simon.

She is survived by her current husband, Kenneth Owens, of Durango; a son, Jeffrey Simon of Cañon City; a daughter, Cheri New of Buena Vista; a stepson, Jeffrey Owens of Jackson, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Melanie Collins of Glenrock, Wyo.; a brother, Richard Boline of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Billie Leavitt of Lincoln, Neb.; nine grandchildren, Kameron and Kody Simon, both of Cañon City, Megan, Kaitlyn and Kyle New, all of Buena Vista, Devin and Sierra Collins, both of Glenrock, Wyo., and Stephanie and Sabrina Owens, both of Jackson, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, 203 E. Sackett St., Salida. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Easter Seal Foundation, through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Lee M. Ancell Sr.

Lee M. Ancell Sr., a longtime Cortez resident, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. He was 88.

Mr. Ancell was born on April 4, 1915, in Gaines County, Texas, the son of Burt and Olive Jewell (Stevenson) Ancell.

From 1941 to 1945, he served in the Army Air Corps. Several years after his discharge, Mr. Ancell wed Margaret Galloway in Seminole, Texas, on June 9, 1949.

Mr. Ancell was a life member of the National Rifle Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the National Water Well Drillers Association. He spent many years as a 4-H leader. He enjoyed welding and building things with metal. He was a hunter and fisherman. He also played guitar.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ancell, of Dolores; his sons, Lee M. Ancell Jr. of Melbourne, Australia, and twins Walter Harold Ancell of Dolores and William Carroll Ancell of Duncan, Okla.; a daughter, Margaret Jewell "Julie" Pickering of Durango; six grandchildren, Joe, Kara, Kelly, Katie Jo, Maria, and Garrett; two sisters, Pauline Ancell and Dorothy Hale, both of Seminole, Texas; a brother, John Ancell of Crosbyton, Texas; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Hunt Zumwalt, of the Cortez Church of Christ, will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Military services will be provided by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post No. 75.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Lee Ancell with the Vectra Bank to benefit the Cortez Alzheimer’s Group.

Jake Martinez

Jake Martinez, Durango resident, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at his home. He was 77.

Mr. Martinez was born June 19, 1925, in Nortonville. He married Lucy Valerio on Jan. 10, 1949, in Taos, N.M.

He was a businessman, employed by Keloff’s in the San Luis Valley for 30 years. He was the co-proprietor of Durango Bowl for 20 years.

"Grandpa Jake was our pillar of strength and voice of encouragement. He was a model for loving unconditionally, giving generously and accepting without judgment," the family said in an obituary notice.

He is survived by his wife of Durango; two daughters, Mary Ann Casaus of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Louella Stephens of Durango; a son, Randy Martinez of Santa Fe; eight grandchildren, Darla Holt of Stillwater, Okla., Douglas Clark of Broken Arrow, Okla., Chad Stephens and Cherée Stephens, both of Durango, Jacob Martinez of Santa Fe, Elisha Smith of Ponca City, Okla., Donna Andryshak of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kyle Schofield of Santa Fe; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hood Chapel. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in LaJara. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Interment will be at Alamosa Cemetery in Alamosa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Sarah ‘Marguerite’ Giles Albrecht

Sarah "Marguerite" Giles Albrecht died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 88.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Albrecht was born July 24, 1914, in Hawk Point, Mo. She had been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, and daughter, Karlene Noland.

She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Queen, of Durango; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Monte Gusewell will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Cynthia Ann Allred Harms

Cynthia Ann Allred Harms died Saturday, April 19, 2003, in an automobile accident. She was 51.

Mrs. Harms was born Oct. 26, 1951, in Lawton, Okla. She graduated from Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City in 1969, and from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in 1973, with a degree in dental hygiene.

She worked 17 years as a dental hygienist in Oklahoma City.

She married Jerry Harms on March 22, 1986, in Oklahoma City.

In May 1990, Mrs. Harms graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in physical therapy. After graduation, the couple moved to Durango. Mrs. Harms began and ended her physical therapy career at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. She practiced there for 13 years.

Mrs. Harms enjoyed the outdoors – especially skiing, hiking and bird-watching. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and home decorating, and was known for giving gardening tips to her patients and recipes to her co-workers.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Harms, of Durango; her parents, Jim and Gwen Allred, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and her sister, Kathy Freeman, of Tampa, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Community Recreation Center.

Weather permitting, the service will be held outdoors along the Animas River at the amphitheater.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302.

Judith Ann Esgate

Judith Ann Esgate died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Durango. She was 60.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Ms. Esgate was born Aug. 29, 1942, in Helper, Utah, to Joseph and Emma (Millarich) Rebol.

She lived in Utah and Southern California before moving to Durango seven years ago. Before moving from California, she was a research chemist in the bio-medical industry.

She enjoyed cooking, hiking, skiing, spending time with her family and being with her dog, Lucian.

She is survived by her brother, Martin Kosec, of Fort Collins, Colo.; one niece; one nephew; four cousins and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery. Deacon Gary Newport will be officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southwest Colorado Mental Health, 281 Sawyer Drive, Durango, CO 81301.

Margaret B. ‘Bee’ Livermore

Margaret B. "Bee" Livermore died Saturday, April 19, 2003, in Durango, of natural causes. She was 58.

Mrs. Livermore was born Feb. 8, 1945, in Boston to Edward and Margaret Motley. She grew up in Concord, Mass. Mrs. Livermore attended Concord Academy in Concord and college at Colby Junior College. After college she married Robert Livermore.

Mrs. Livermore was well-traveled. She once visited Greece for an archaeological dig and has lived in Hawaii, Montana, Santa Fe and, most recently, Pagosa Springs. Throughout her life she was a medical technologist, and most notably a painter and songwriter. While in Pagosa Springs, she taught art and gave voice lessons. She helped start a breast cancer support group while living in Boston.

She is survived by her father, Edward Motley; a son, Ben Livermore of Belmont, Mass.; a daughter, Lindsey Livermore of Belmont; a brother, Ned Motley, of Philadelphia; and two sisters, Hattie Cleveland of Carbondale and Susan Hansen of Carlisle, Mass.

No local services are planned at this time, and cremation will be performed by Hood Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Patrick W. Luter Cancer Center, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Margaret M. Paxton

Margaret M. Paxton died Friday, April 11, 2003, in McPherson, Kan. She was 86.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Paxton was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Beaumont, Texas to Ethel Chandler and Delbert Moore. She married Fay M. Paxton on Jan. 1, 1938, in Guymon, Okla. Mrs. Paxton was a teacher and a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Durango and the League of Women Voters. She moved from Durango to McPherson in 2002.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, John W. Paxton.

She is survived by two sons, Paul M. Paxton of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Joseph A. Paxton of Pueblo; one daughter, Alice P. Young, of Great Bend, Kan.; one brother, Delbert Moore of Archer City, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Durango.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Durango.

Victoria R. Householder

Durango resident Victoria R. Householder died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 79.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Householder was born March 6, 1924, in La Posta, to Antonio Pablin Barry and Palmina Albo Barry. She married Wilbur Fern Householder. She spent her adult years as a waitress and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Celestino Garcia.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbur Householder of Durango; her brother, Jimmy Barry of Park Hills, Mo.; her sister, Precilliana Wilson of Durango; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Victorious Life Fellowship in Durango. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery. The Rev. W. Stan Formby and Chaplain Mike Darmour will officiate.

Lucinda Rael

Lucinda Rael, of Ignacio, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, in Ignacio. She was 38.

The cause of death was cancer.

Ms. Rael was born April 7, 1965, in Durango. She lived in Ignacio most of her life, and was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. She worked for several tribal departments and organizations.

Ms. Rael enjoyed cooking, canning, fishing, camping, gardening, spending time with her family and riding her motorcycle.

She is survived by her children, Jontique Velasco, Jacob Velasco, Roger Brassard and Hunter Brassard, all of Ignacio; her mother, Phyllis Escalanti of Bayfield; her grandmother, Mary B. Chavez of Bayfield; her brothers, David Rael of Phoenix, Alfred Rael of Phoenix and Irvin Casias of Bayfield; her sisters, Yvonne Phillips of Ignacio, Becky Rael-Thompson of Ignacio, Corleen Rael of Ignacio and Toni Rael of Albuquerque; her former husband, Roger Brassard Sr., of Ignacio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ignacio Baptist Church Maranatha in Ignacio. Burial will be at the Bayfield Cemetery.
