Deanna Jean Miller
Longtime Durango resident Deanna Jean Miller died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at her home in Durango of heart failure. She was 66.
Mrs. Miller was born May 6, 1937, in Champaign, Ill., the daughter of Dean and Ruth Miller. She married Kenneth E. Miller on March 18, 1961, in Chicago, and moved to Durango in 1969. She had traveled to Durango frequently as a child.
"She was kind of adventurous," said her son, Kerry Miller, of Denver. Mrs. Miller and her husband would go boating and four-wheeling, and they enjoyed escaping to the country. "She was considerate, thoughtful and helpful."
Mrs. Miller was a longtime employee of Bank of Durango and Western Land Surveys.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by two sons, Kerry Miller of Denver, and Greg Miller of North Carolina; and three grandchildren, Kara Anne Miller, Paul Thomas Miller and Jan Elizabeth Miller, all of Denver.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate.
Henry Cloud Taylor Sr.
Henry Cloud Taylor Sr., 86, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango.
Mr. Taylor was born March 11, 1917, in Ignacio, the son of John and Kitty Taylor. In his younger years, Mr. Taylor was a sparring partner for Joe Lewis when he passed through. He also worked in the steel mills in Pueblo. Mr. Taylor was a range rider in East Cat Creek, Sandoval and Ignacio Canyon. He also raised sheep on the Piedra. His ranch has been passed down in the family and is now owned by his grandson, Lance Taylor.
Mr. Taylor lived in Los Angeles until he retired in the early 1980s and moved back to Ignacio. He enjoyed baseball, hunting, sports and music.
"My dad is well-liked by all parts and divisions of the community, and he had many friends. He asked me to say goodbye to his friends," his son, Erwin Taylor, said.
He is preceded in death by three sons, Frederick Taylor, Jason Taylor and Dean Taylor, and a daughter, Eva O’John.
Mr. Taylor is survived by four sons, Erwin Taylor of Bayfield, Buddy Taylor of Ignacio, Henry Taylor of Cortez and Laddie Taylor of Denver; and three daughters, Mary Frances Taylor of Ignacio, Sunny Dez Waratza of Denver and Henrietta Taylor of Denver. He was also survived by 17 grandchildren: Lance Taylor of Arboles; Trent Taylor, Andrea Taylor, LaTitia Taylor and Travis Taylor, all of Bayfield; Cecilia O’John, Cavanaugh O’John and Amos O’John, all of Denver; Stefanie Fasano, Michelle Olguin, Raquel Taylor, Rochell Aguilar and Buddy Ray Taylor, all of Ignacio; and Little Fawn McCook, Paco McCook, Isaiah McCook and Boylad McCook, all of Denver, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Bayfield. Gene Chapin will officiate. Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.
James L. Hunt
James L. Hunt died Monday, May 5, 2003, at his home in Cortez, of cancer. He was 83.
Mr. Hunt was born Jan. 22, 1920, in North Platte, Neb., the son of William and Marie (Buchtel) Hunt. He married Marjorie Laura Cowan on April 13, 1946, in Reno, Nev.
He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in 1943. Mr. Hunt served as a machinist’s mate and was stationed on Atu, in the Aleutian Islands.
He worked in construction across the world, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, Guam, Africa and Alaska. In 1953, the couple adopted their two daughters while in Casablanca, Morocco.
Mr. Hunt and his brother operated Basin Bowl in the early 1960s. Mr. Hunt was project manager on the Morrow Point Dam near Montrose. More construction work took him to California, Australia and Alaska to troubleshoot the Alaskan Pipeline.
In the 1970s he bought Basin Bowl from his brother and operated it until its closure in 1982. Thereafter he worked as a handyman on a local ranch.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997 and a granddaughter, Heather Elise Sanders in 1996.
He is survived by two daughters, Geri Sanders-Klein of Cortez and Linda Smithson of Filmore, Calif.; one granddaughter, Leigha Herrera of Filmore; two grandsons, Jacob Nugent and Brandon Nugent, both of Filmore; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Private family services will be held.
Kenneth H. Thulson
Kenneth H. Thulson died of cancer Friday, May 2, 2003, in Denver. He was 74.
He was born in Denver on Oct. 8, 1928. He married Joan Melbye in Denver in 1954.
Mr. Thulson served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. He worked for The Denver Post for many years. For the past 22 years, he owned and operated his own business in Denver, Hardwood Originals by Thulson, with his son Mike.
He was an avid golfer, woodworker and painter.
He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kirsten Thulson.
Mr. Thulson is survived by his wife; two brothers, Allen Thulson of Battlement Mesa, and Roy Thulson of Denver; three sons, Jeff Thulson of Durango, Mike Thulson and Brian Thulson, both of Denver; eight grandchildren, Cathy, Jennifer, Julie, Josh Thulson of Denver, Emily and Samuel Thulson of Denver, and Jessica and Jonathan Thulson of Durango.
Services will be held May 14 in Denver. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Program of your choice.
Alfonso J. Atencio
Alfonso J. Atencio, 92, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at his home in Ignacio.
Mr. Atencio was born Oct. 7, 1910, in La Garita, the son of Patricio and Emilia (Marquez) Atencio. He married Maria G. Aguilar on Feb. 14, 1933, in La Garita. He was a lifelong rancher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He liked to watch boxing. He was an associate of the Good Shepard’s and the Nuestro Padre Jesus groups.
He is preceded in death by his wife and a son, Orlando Atencio.
He is survived by his brother Toby Atencio of Colorado Springs; three sisters, Delia Aguilar of Center, Margie Sanchez of Center, and Ophelia Vigil of Milford, Utah; two daughters, Beatrice Pacheco of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Cora Velasquez of Farmington; five sons Victor Atencio of Ignacio, Fred Atencio of Ignacio, Luis Atencio of Fruita, Fermin Atencio of Salt Lake City, and Alex Atencio of Farmington; 32 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great grandchildren, and numerous other family members.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 14826 Colorado Highway 172 in Ignacio. The Rev. Eddy Andary of St. Ignatius will officiate. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Ignatius. Burial will occur at Ignacio Catholic Cemetery in Ignacio. Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Margaret ‘Margie’ Forde
Margaret “Margie” Forde, a former resident of Ignacio, died Friday, May 2, 2003, in Pampa, Texas. She was 89.
Margaret Agnes Davison Forde, the youngest of seven children, was born Feb. 28, 1914, in Missouri to Oliver Columbus Davison and Elsa Henrietta Smith Davison. She came to Dove Creek at an early age, traveling over Wolf Creek Pass in a buggy and covered wagon. She lived in Ignacio from 1965 to 1969.
“My mother was a housewife,’’ said daughter, Doreen Bruce. “She pretty much stayed between her four walls.”
Mrs. Forde married T.H. (Tommy) Forde on Dec. 30, 1930. She lived in Pampa, Farmington and Shiprock, N.M., and Ignacio before returning to Pampa in 1969.
Mrs. Forde is survived by two daughters, Doreen Bruce of Pampa, and Nita Anderson of Ignacio; a son, James Edward Forde of Childress, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Sharon Dibble, Wayne Bruce, Tommy Bruce and Donald Dee Anderson Jr., all of Pampa, Doretta Anderson of Lone Grove, Okla., Margie Winklebauer of Durango, Donna Gomez of Ignacio, Carolyn Thompson of Arboles and Mark Forde and Lisa Campbell, both of Childress.
Mrs. Forde was preceded in death by her brothers, sister and husband.
Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Green Mount Cemetery in Durango, with the Rev. Lakan Mariano officiating. Arrangements were made by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors in Pampa.

Fred E. Driever
Fred E. Driever died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in Ignacio. He was 90.
Mr. Driever was born April 22, 1913, in Pittsburgh, the son of Henry and Margarett Driever.
He married Violet A. (Beyvl) Driever on Sept. 17, 1938, in Pittsburgh. He moved from Pittsburgh to La Plata County in 1975.
He was a member of the Orient Lodge No. 683 F&AM (Masons), the Gateway Royal Arch Chapter No. 285 in Pennsylvania, the Durango Elks Lodge No. 507.
He also was involved in the Florida Grange, the La Plata County Grange and the Colorado State Grange. He was also a member of the Durango Amateur Radio Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, in 1989.
He is survived by two daughters, Christine Seibert of Cleveland, and Patrice A. Driever of New Orleans; a granddaughter, Alexandra Siebert of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Crestview Cemetery. Curt Christiansen will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hood Mortuary.
Lula Belle Uptain
Lula Belle Uptain, a longtime Lewis resident, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. She was 88.
Mrs. Uptain was born March 28, 1915, in Eldorado Springs, Mo., the seventh child of George Elijah and Rose Maude (Duncan) Maslen.
She worked until she met Clarence Uptain, whom she married on June 14, 1937.
They homesteaded north of Lewis, where their first son was born.
Mr. and Mrs. Uptain farmed together and later bought the home where Mrs. Uptain has lived for the past 58 years. Mrs. Uptain joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1959. She was very involved with the church and with Christ.
She is survived by her son, Cordell Uptain of Lewis; her daughter, Carol Uptain Beals Wilson of Lewis; seven grandchildren, Lynn Rougeau of Louisiana, Scott Uptain of Nebraska, Ron Uptain of Cortez, Gina Marriott of Mesa, Ariz., Teresa Clark of Spring, Texas, Stacey Corbin of Chandler, Ariz., and Dusty Beals of Hesperus; 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Claude Maslen and Homer Maslen, both of Cortez; a sister, Grace Randol of Cortez; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Echols will officiate. Interment will follow at the SunnySide Cemetery at Lewis. Visitation has been set for 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Lula Belle Uptain with the Vectra Bank of Cortez.
