Eugene "Gene" S. NeelJr.
Eugene "Gene" S. Neel Jr. of Holliston, Mass., formerly of Dolores, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at St. Vincent's Hospital, of heart problems. He was 58.
Mr. Neel was born November 14, 1944.
Mr. Neel, an active participant in the soccer community, is survived by his wife, Jackie; his sons, Travis and Justin of the family home and Chris Neel of Detroit, Mich.; his daughters, Shelly and Leslie; his granddaughter, Sophia Belcher of Towson, Md.; his granddaughter, Brooke, and grandson, Coby Little-Staples of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his father, Eugene S. Neel Sr. of Fayettville, Tenn.; his brother, Tom of Tennessee; his sister, Suzy Neil of Connecticut; and numerous other family members.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hanover, Pa.
Interment will be Monday at Salem United Church in Dover, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at Dolores State Bank.
Homer Howard Black
Homer Howard Black died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 50.
Mr. Black died of natural causes.
He was born May 9, 1953, in Clinton, Okla., to James and Gertrude Black. He moved from Oklahoma to Durango in 1967.
He was a lifelong member of the Native American Church.
He was active as a Sun Dancer and enjoyed fishing, hunting, basketball and bingo. He was an avid Giants football fan and a devoted father and family man.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Tsuchiya, of Ignacio; two sons, Jay Black and Jasper Cook, both of Ignacio; his granddaughter, Sabrina Black of Ignacio; his sister, Rose Mary Black of Taos, N.M.; his brother, Paul Elvis Black; two uncles, an aunt and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Homer Black.
A wake will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Naranjo family home at 3479 County Road 521 (Buck Highway).
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Ignacio Catholic Cemetery (south). A reception will follow the service at the Headstart gym in Ignacio.
Wallace RaymondLeeSr.
Wallace Raymond Lee Sr. died Saturday, June 14, 2003, in Redmesa.
He was 87.
"He was an honest, loving gentleman," said his wife, Ione Lee.
Mr. Lee was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Overton, Nev., to Wallace Lee and Jennie Mae Willden.
He married Ione Slade on Sept. 4, 1935, in Logan, Utah.
Mr. Lee served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Ione, of Redmesa; six daughters, Barbara Harris of Blanding, Utah, Diana Thimmes of Logan, Utah, Janette Harris of Page, Ariz., Shawna Azbill of Salt Lake City, Sheryl Willis of Fruit Heights, Utah, and Cindy Whittaker of Redmesa; two sons, Wallace Raymond Lee Jr. of Eagle Gate, Idaho, and Russel Lee of Bellevue, Wash.; 35 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and six brothers and sisters.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Lee, and one granddaughter, Jayme Lee.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Redmesa.
Hannah Kamp HaniChalmers
Hannah Kamp "Hani" Chalmers died of natural causes Sunday, June 1, 2003, at her home in Durango. She was 65.
Mrs. Chalmers was born March 13, 1938, in Dearborn, Mich., to James and Frances (Van Zanten) Kamp. She married Edwin Laurence Chalmers on June 21, 1973, in Chicago. They moved to the Durango area nine years ago.
Mrs. Chalmers was an associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of Florida, Gainesville. She enjoyed being in the company of her Bible study and luncheon friends.
"She thoroughly enjoyed loving her children, they were her absolute pride and joy," said her husband, Larry Chalmers, of Durango.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Jill Chalmers Barton of Round Rock, Texas; one son, Timothy Blair Chalmers of San Antonio, Texas; one grandson, Garrett Barton of Round Rock, Texas; two brothers, John Kamp and Tom Kamp; and one sister, Frances Terpstra.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Marks Episcopal Church. The Rev. Andrew Cooley will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Beulah MaudeSutton
Beulah Maude Sutton, 93, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.
Mrs. Sutton was born March 16, 1910, in Panhandle, Texas, the daughter of William and Edith (Ramsey) Richardson. She moved from Texas to Kansas in a wagon when she was 3 years old. She moved to Colorado in 1923. She married Leslie Sutton on Nov. 30, 1928, in Wiley, Colo. She and Mr. Sutton lived in eastern Colorado until July 1937 when they moved to Allison.
She worked on the farm in addition to raising five children until 1951. She was a cook at the Allison Community School for two years and at the Ute Indian Agency for 18 years. She retired in March 1972.
She is survived by her husband, of Allison; two sons, Daryl Sutton of Allison and James Sutton of Allison; two daughters, Delores Darrow of Florence, Ore., and Barbara Nelson of Allison; 10 grandchildren, Donna DeLaTorre of Sacramento, Calif., Terry Sutton of Johnstown, Colo., Jerry Sutton of Marysville, Calif., Donald Sutton of Durango, Pamela Baidwan of Sacramento, Calif., Vickie Sutton of Allison, Judith Becker of Allison, Roger Phelps of Allison, Cindy Greer of Marvel and Stephanie Tenarnio of Durango; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Betty Louise Phelps; a granddaughter, Leslie Baird; a grandson, Daryl David Sutton; and two great-grandsons, Zachary Baird and Douglas Phelps.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary in Durango. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Allison Grange Hall in Allison. Jeff Finch, of Aztec Presbyterian Church, will be officiating. Burial will occur at Allison-Tiffany Cemetery in Allison.

Harold BurtnerWilmerSr.
Harold Burtner Wilmer died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at his home in Bayfield. He was 84.
Mr. Wilmer was born in Durango on Sept. 16, 1918, to Joseph Newton Wilmer and Grace Burtner Wilmer. He was raised on the family farm in Bayfield. He was a veteran of World War II, and after being honorably discharged from the Army, he married Anna Lois (Nan) Tubbs Wilmer on March 16,1946, in Gallup, N.M. On June 30, 1962, he was sealed to his wife and family in the Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Wilmer was a self-made civil engineer with several projects and accomplishments. These include the building of Lemon Dam, the Chama-Dulce water project in Dulce, N.M., and the Strawberry Reservoir water project in Heber City, Utah. He was the assistant project engineer on the Westside tunnel of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel on Interstate 70, the Gallup-Tucson microwave project in Tucson, Ariz., the Hunter Power Plant in Castle Dale, Utah, and the La Plata County Road Department.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a baseball coach for the Castle Dale Junior Baseball League. In his youth, he loved to fish and hunt and was the official camp cook for his brother-in-laws outfitter business. He will always be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and as a special friend to those who knew him.
Mr. Wilmer is preceded in death by four of his children, Jo Ann, Harold Burtner Jr., Gary and Jolene.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Stanley Eugene Wilmer of Westminster and Jay Newton Wilmer of Bayfield; four daughters, Susan Gay Wilmer Billiard of Huntington, Utah, Barbara Lois Wilmer Thatcher of Pima, Ariz., Rebecca Nell Wilmer Potter, and Cheryl Ann Wilmer Jorgensen of Castle Dale, Utah; 32 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bayfield at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Bayfield-Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.
Elsie WilliamsHolt
Elsie Williams Holt, a longtime Durango resident, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at her home in Sunnyside, Utah, of natural causes. She was 94.
Mrs. Holt was born March 10, 1909, in Chicago, the daughter of George and Wilhelmina Schumacher. The family moved to the Durango area when she was 2 years old. The family owned a farm where Fort Lewis College is located.
married to James J. Holt on March 10, 1937, in Bayfield, Mrs. Holt and her husband ranched around Durango and later moved to Fruita. After her husband died, Mrs. Holt married Roy Williams on April 4, 1974.
Mrs. Holt was a member of the quilting club and was active in the Retired Service Volunteer Program.
Mrs. Holt is survived by three daughters, Sharon Davis, of Rockport, Texas, Eilene Cooper of Sunnyside, Utah, and Juanita Thate of East Carbon, Utah; a son, James J. Holt of Ignacio; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Holt was preceded in death by both husbands and a daughter, Helen Davis.
A graveside service is at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenmount Cemetery, with the Rev. Frank Kihn officiating. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Mary WalquistMuirhead
Mary Walquist Muirhead died Sunday, May 25, 2003. She was 80. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Muirhead was born May 16, 1923, in Burlingame, Kan., to Sara and Theodore Walquist.
After high school graduation, she moved to Illinois, where she married Bruce Muirhead, who was serving in World War II when they married.
They loved to travel, and she helped her husband build an airplane. Mrs. Muirhead was an active Methodist, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She enjoyed quilting.
The Muirheads lived in Boulder for 28 years. They retired in 1980 to Pagosa Springs. They were married almost 60 years.
The couple had three children, Barry of Salt Lake City and Crested Butte, Joanne of Crested Butte, and George of Pagosa Springs. She is also survived by her husband, three sisters, nine grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Community United Methodist Church in Pagosa Springs. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

Sylvia Louise Parks died Friday, June 6, 2003, of natural causes at her home in Durango. She was 78.
Mrs. Parks was born Dec. 2, 1924, in Grand Junction, the daughter of John and Helen (Crawley) Garnand. She married N.P. Parks II on May 31, 1941, in Aztec.
Mrs. Parks served in the Womens Army Corps during World War II. She owned three restaurants Irenes, Quick Lunch and Plaza Luncheonette.
Mrs. Parks is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Parks-Farmer and Cheryl Mellott, both of Durango; two sons, John Parks of Aztec and David Parks of Durango; two sisters, Agnes Dunn of Grand Junction, and Babe Gensheer of Durango; sister-in-law, Willie Garnand of Durango; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Nick Parks; and a daughter, Jeri Parks-Baker.
A memorial service is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary chapel, with the Rev. Myron Darmour of Mercy Medical Center officiating. Cremation will follow.

Regina StewartPoer
Regina Stewart Poer, 64, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at home in Portland, Ore. She died peacefully of a weakened heart, her husband, John R. Poer, said.
Mrs. Poer was born on August 26,1938, to Ralph and Olive Stewart, in Elko, Nev. She graduated from Elko County High School and earned her bachelors in education from Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
She taught fourth and fifth grades in Sparks, Nev..
She married John R. Poer, formerly of Durango, in 1963, and is survived by him. A former resident of Los Gatos, Calif., Mrs. Poer moved to Portland in 1970.
She was active in American Kennel Club retriever field trials and was the long-serving club secretary and field trial secretary of the Oregon Retriever Trial Club.
She was responsible for support work in three National Amateur Retriever Trials, held at Sauvie Island, Ore.
She loved Labrador Retrievers and owned four who became Field Champions and another who was an Amateur Field Champion. She played the French horn in Salt Lake City summer symphonies. She was self-taught on computers, learning many programs on her own.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Birgittas Catholic Church, on Highway 30, at 11820 St. Helens Road, in Portland, Ore. A reception will follow at the church hall.
