Margaret Helen Shows
Margaret Helen Shows, 49, who lived in Durango for 20 years as a teenager and a young mother, died on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, from cancer at home in Colorado Springs, said her sister, Karen Overington.
Ms. Shows was born on Jan. 17, 1954, in Lubbock, Texas, the daughter of Virginia (Boling) Rohr and Forrest Groves Jr. She graduated from Durango High School with the graduating class of 1973, then went on to study nursing at Fort Lewis College and in Amarillo, Texas.
She began volunteering as a candy striper at the age of 14 in Texas. After her family moved to Durango, she carried on volunteering at Mercy Hospital from the ages of 16 to 19. She became a registered nurse and was a caregiver for most of her life, working with cancer patients and the elderly.
Ms. Shows is survived by her mother, Virginia B. Rohr of Durango; her children: Yvonne Shows of Amarillo and Candice Shows of Colorado Springs; her grandchildren: Michael Shows of Colorado Springs, Mallory Shows and Sabelle McMillan, both of Amarillo; her sisters: Catherine Groves of Santa Rosa, Calif., Roberta Dehn of Bitburg, Germany, and Karen Overington of Durango; her four nieces; and her nephew.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.
Ralph Eric ‘Rick’ Pasquale
Ralph Eric "Rick" Pasquale, 46, died on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, from complications after surgery at Anderson Hospital in Marysville, Ill. He had been in the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Edwardsville, Ill., since suffering severe frostbite in January. He had undergone several operations, said his father, Ralph W. Pasquale, of Durango.
Mr. Pasquale was born in Boulder on May 3, 1957, the son of the Lee (Byrd) Pasquale, who preceded him in death, and Ralph W. Pasquale. He was a carpentry foreman and lived most of his life in Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his son, Eric Pasquale of Sorento, Ill.; his sisters, Dorothy Lee Byrd of Hotchkiss and Raye Colbert of Salida; and his father.
No memorial service is planned.
Alvina Box Spencer
Alvina Box Spencer, 62, of Boise, Idaho, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, in St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. The cause of death was meningitis and pneumonia with complications from diabetes and renal failure, said a representative of Summers Funeral Homes in Meridian, Idaho.
Mrs. Spencer, who was also known as "Butterfly" or "Nanasich," was born on February 13, 1941, in Towaoc, the daughter of Pearl Posey Box and Fritz Bent Box. She was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
She worked at the Idaho Hunger Action Council in Boise, where she helped to establish the Child Care Food Program. She was also a member of the Native American Indian Coalition and the Painted Horse War Dance Society, both in Boise.
In Ignacio, Mrs. Spencer helped develop the Shining Mountain Diabetes Program, which included broadcasting diabetes health-awareness issues in Ute on radio station KSUT, and working with former tribal chairman, John E. Baker Jr.
She enjoyed speaking the Ute language, bear dancing, attending powwows, playing pinochle, gambling, camping, reading, traveling, and family get-togethers, which were highlighted by the time she spent spoiling her grandchildren.
"My grandmother has taught me many lessons. I would never be the person I am today without her guidelines," said Mrs. Spencer’s granddaughter, Chelsey Shira.
Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Clayton Spencer.
She is survived by her children, Axle Joseph of Bayfield, Sue Joseph of Boise, Buff Joseph of Ignacio, and Winnie Spencer-Dealy of Boise; her sisters, Shirley Esparza of Ignacio, June Box-Tibbets of Portland, Ore., Ernie Watts, Joyce Frost, and Karen Box, all of Ignacio; her brother, Greg Box of Ignacio; her six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Spencer’s family would like to thank the staff of Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise; the staff of San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington; the staff of Mercy Medical Center in Durango; and the staff of the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque for the care they gave Mrs. Spencer.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Rolling Thunder Hall in Ignacio, and the burial will be at the Ouray Memorial Cemetery. The family welcomes everyone for lunch at Rolling Thunder Hall after the burial.
Jerrie Lynn Dolen
Jerrie Lynn Dolen, 49, who lived in Durango from 1964 to 1972, died unexpectedly at her home in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003. The cause of death was not disclosed
Ms. Dolen was born June 4, 1954, in Colorado City, Texas, the daughter of Marilyn Mace and Isaac Stuart Dolen, Jr. She grew up in Durango, graduating from Durango High School in 1972. Then she attended Texas Tech University and the University of Houston, graduating with a degree in art history in 1976.
Ms. Dolen was a goldsmith and jewelry designer. She owned two galleries, one in Santa Fe and one in Couer d’Alene, Idaho. She later earned her certification as a real-estate appraiser in West Palm Beach, Fla. Overseas travel was a passion. She was especially fond of the Caribbean island of Aruba and visiting the Taj Mahal.
"Jerrie enjoyed spoiling her niece, Shannon, to the extreme. Theirs was a very close relationship, and she will be greatly missed." said her sister Molly’o Dolen Hoover.
Karen Marcea, another sister, said, "One of Jerrie’s greatest joys was surprising her grandmother, Beatrice, with cookies and other treats. Ms. Dolen’s third sister, Anita Dolen, said their telephone conversations were so long that her ears would literally go to sleep.
Ms. Dolen is survived by her grandmother, Beatrice L. Gilmore of Mancos; her sisters: Karen J. Marcea of Mancos, Anita A. Dolen of Green Mountain Falls and Molly’o Dolen Hoover of Bayfield; her special friend, Renee Dolen; and her nieces and nephew.
Ms. Dolen will be cremated. Plans for a memorial service will be announced. Top of Page
Arloa L. Walker
Arloa L. Walker, 67, died at home in Bayfield on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003.
Ms. Walker was born Nov. 19, 1935, in Chino, Calif. She worked as a nurse in Laguna Beach, Calif., and ranched in Bayfield, where she lived for 27 years.
"Thank you who have remembered Arloa and comforted me in my sorrow," said Ms. Walker’s lifelong friend, Gloria M. Dee. "You will not be forgotten, Arloa,"
She died by suicide.
Victoria ‘Vicki’ Leah Garcia
Victoria "Vicki" Leah Garcia, 78, died on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Arriola on May 16, 1925, the daughter of Ferminia and Miguel Valdez.
She married George G. Garcia in Durango and spent many years as a homemaker. Later in her life, she worked for Redfield Optic.
Mrs. Garcia enjoyed reading – especially the Bible – exercise and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by her children: Rita Garcia, George L. Garcia, and Lisa Whetten, all of Durango, and Michael M. Garcia of Auburn, Calif.; her sister, Rose Trujillo of Farmington; her brother, Mike Valdez of Torrence, Calif.; her seven grandchildren, her great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
The rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, also at Sacred Heart. The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenmont Cemetery after the Mass.

Alice M. Morrison
A graveside service for Alice M. Morrison, of Firestone, who died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Florida Cemetery in Durango.
Mrs. Morrison is a former Durango resident. With her husband, Mrs. Morrison farmed in the Florida River valley until the early '60s.
Eugene Mario 'Gene' Mapelli
Eugene Mario "Gene" Mapelli, 77, who once lived in Durango, died in Palm Springs, Fla., on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003. He died after an extended illness, his family said.
He was born on Nov. 6, 1925, in Denver, the son of Della (Borrelli) Mapelli and Herman Mapelli, who had immigrated from Italy.
Cindy Mapelli, a daughter-in-law of Mr. Mapelli, characterized his family as "devout Catholics and hard workers."
Mr. Mapelli and his brothers started Mapelli Brothers in Denver during the 1920s.
He opened his own company in Denver in 1951, then merged with Monfort of Colorado in 1968.
He left Monfort in 1977 and opened Mapelli Meat Company in Las Vegas with his wife, Velda King Mapelli, and in Palm Springs in 1983 with his son, Geno Mapelli, and his daughter, Stephanie Dee Mapelli.
The Mapellis retired to Durango in 1994, but left to re-enter the meat business with Mapelli Meat Company in Pueblo in 1997. Mr. Mapelli's passion for golf persuaded him to retire a second time, this time to Palm Springs, Calif.
"Gene loved playing golf, especially with his grandson, P.J.," Cindy Mapelli said. "He was passionate about business and always said that, in business, timing was everything. So we have to believe that even in death his timing was perfect no matter how much we will miss him."
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Velda King Mapelli of Palm Springs; his children: Eugene Mario "Geno" Mapelli II of Durango, and his daughter, Stephanie Dee Mapelli of Seattle; his grandchildren: P.J. Mapelli of Durango, and Melissa Lynn Beuchat of Las Vegas.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Denver at Crown Hill Tower of Memories Chapel, followed by a gathering of friends at the restaurant, Kate's at 35th Avenue, 3435 Albion, in Denver
Virginia K. Young
Virginia K. Young, 94 a Durango native and the third generation of her family to own Schluter Floral Company died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at her home in Durango. She died of natural causes, her family said.
Mrs. Young was born November 15, 1908, in Durango, the daughter of Marie (Burch) Klahn and August Klahn. She married W. Herbert Young on May 2, 1926, in Durango.
Mrs. Young was the former owner and partner of Schluter Greenhouses, north of Durango, Schluter Floral Company on East Second Avenue and Young Company, a rental-property company.
In 1939, Mrs. Young and her husband took over the companies, which had been owned by her parents and grandparents. They led them until 1978. Her granddaughter, Mary Jeanne Brittain, now manages the companies.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Herbert Young in 1985, and her daughters, Marilyn Krul and Shirley Jean Butler.
Mrs. Young is survived by her son, William H. Young Jr. of Durango; her sister, Jeri Frandsen of Grand Junction; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Sawyer of Glendale, Ariz., Mary Jeanne Brittain of Durango, Robert Butler of Phoenix, Bill Butler of Gallup, N.M., Carol Frazer of Salt Lake City; her six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery, where cremains will be buried.
The Rev. James Koenigsfeld, with St. Columba Catholic Church, will officiate. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Ronald R. Goodman
Ronald R. Goodman, 63, a native of Durango and a onetime gallery owner here, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at home in Palm Harbor, Fla. Mr. Goodman died of cancer and was under the care of the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, his family said.
Mr. Goodman was born on June 12, 1940, the son of Marguerite and William Goodman. He graduated from Durango High School and attended Fort Lewis College.
The Goodman family have long had businesses in Durango: two generations of morticians, a sign painter and a dealer in art supplies and frames. In the late 1970s, Mr. Goodman returned to Durango from Scottsdale, Ariz., to join his family’s business tradition and open Gallerie Marguerite, named after his mother, at 144 E. Eighth St.
He was a 32nd-degree member of the Durango Masonic Lodge, as well as a member of the Shrine and Elks Lodge of Durango.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn Goodman, of Palm Harbor; his son, Ronald Goodman of Doylestown, Pa.; his brother, William E. Goodman of Durango; his stepson, Russell C. Jordan, of Henderson, Nev.; his stepdaughter, Deborah A. Eubanks of Berthoud; and six stepgrandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at Greenmount Cemetery.
