James D. McBride
James D. McBride, a lifelong Cortez resident, died of cancer Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at his home in Cortez. He was 71.
Mr. McBride was born on Oct. 8, 1932, in Cortez to James Alexander and Maude Alice (Morelock) McBride. He graduated from Montezuma Cortez High School in 1950. He attended the University of Colorado School of Engineering, where he graduated first in his class. He excelled in his career as a chemical engineer with Shell Oil Company, until his retirement in 1991, his family said.
He was a member of the BPOE No. 1789 and the Montezuma County Historical Society. He served on the board of directors for the Cortez Fire District and was a member of the Planning and Zoning Committee for the city of Cortez. His dogs, golfing and fishing with friend Harold Lyon were his favorite pastimes.
"He was a great father and great friend to many people all over the United States," said his daughter Patricia Woods.
Mr. McBride is survived by his wife, Flora Deanne (Wagner) McBride of Cortez; three daughters, Colleen Pasley of Bloomberg, Texas, Patricia Woods of Caballo, N.M., and Kathy Diestelhorst of Bunker Hill, Ill.; a son, Michael McBride of Arrey, N.M.; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Kimberly and William Pasley; Shawn, Sabrina, and Tamra Woods; Randy and Jamie Diestelhorst; Michaela McBride and Scottlin and Victoria Luna; and a sister, Gwen Monarch of Broomfield.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. The Rev. Erika Meyer will officiate.

Warren W. Batie
Warren W. Batie, formerly of Bayfield, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, in Grants, N.M. at age 100.
Mr. Batie was born in Eastland County, Texas on July 18, 1903 to Claborne and Lou Batie.
He was a graduate of Drahagn's Business College in Abilene, Texas, and one of the founders of Artesia Peoples State Bank. He owned and operated supermarkets in Artesia, Roswell, N.M., Carlsbad, N.M., Albuquerque, Alamogordo, N.M., and Grants, N.M., and in Pagosa Springs and Rocky Ford, as well as convenience stores in Alamogordo and Albuquerque.
After a career in the grocery business, the Baties moved to Colorado. They later retired in Tucumcari, N.M., on a little livestock farm that he loved. Mr. Batie was a member of the Church of Christ. He moved to Grants in 1997.
Mr. Batie was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Ruby; three brothers, Luther, Dee and Toy; and three sisters, Madge, M.L. and Agnes.
He is survived by three sons, Eugene Batie of Odessa, Texas, Elvis Batie of Grants, N.M., and Don Batie of Chico, Calif.; one daughter, Laverne Jones of Grants, N.M; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Eva Billingsley of Paradise, Calif., and Wilma Reid of Roswell, N.M.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Terpening & Son Mortuary Chapel in Artesia, N.M., 611 West Grand Ave., with Roby Zumwalt and J.T. Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Lawrence C. Gass
Lawrence C. Gass, a longtime Colorado resident, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at his home in Durango from natural causes. He was 89.
Mr. Gass was born Jan. 11, 1914, in Mexico, Mo., to J.E. and Beulah Gass.
His family moved to Vandalia, Mo., where he attended school.
Mr. Gass married Eleanor Caldwell on June 16, 1935, in Vandalia.
Mr. Gass worked at Ely Walker Garment Factory before he moved to Colorado in 1943. He worked at Fort Lewis College in Hesperus, and later owned Square Deal Builders and a stove and spa business. He also served as a Marine in World War II.
He enjoyed gospel music, the waltz, sports and his friends. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Durango for 60 years, and he was a member of Gideons International since 1967.
"His greatest satisfaction came from raising his family, building a business and being an active part of his church and the Durango community," his children said.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Durango; two daughters, Sylvia Livingston of Claremore, Okla., and Joanne Armstrong of Durango; two sons, Larry Gass of Vallecito and Gary Gass of Farmington; eight grandchildren, Scott Boyer of Decatur, Ala., Michael Gass of Gypsum, Colo., Amy Gass of Silverton, Randy Armstrong of Durango, Rick Armstrong of Jackson Hole, Wyo., Robin Armstrong of Durango, Cody Gass of Farmington, and Cara Gass of Farmington; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Kay Gass.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Durango. The Rev. Jim Brown will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Thelma Rognelda Amble Williams
Thelma Rognelda Amble Williams, of Farmington, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Crane's Roost nursing home in Aztec. She was 91.
Mrs. Williams was born May 23, 1912, in Manzano, N.M., to Dr. C.J. and Lena Booth Amble.
She lived in Mountainair, N.M., and graduated from the University of New Mexico, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, in 1933.
Mrs. Williams married Gerald Ross Williams in 1934, and they lived in Moriarty, N.M., before they moved to Farmington in 1961. Mrs. Williams taught at Moriarty High School and at Farmington High School.
Mrs. Williams was a Methodist and a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Edmanson of Durango and Betty Jordan of Bloomfield; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, in 1997.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at LaQuey Funeral Home Chapel in Farmington. The Rev. Adrianne Coleman will officiate. After cremation, burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.
Frederick C. Feirn Sr.
Frederick C. Feirn Sr., 72, died in his sleep Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at the home of his sister in Clinton, Wis. He had attended his mother's funeral in Clinton the day before.
Mr. Feirn was born Sept. 24, 1931, son of Fred G. and Margaret E. (Carlin) Feirn.
He grew up in the Clinton area and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1953 until he was honorably discharged in Charleston, S.C.
He married Rosemarie Eva Fligge on Feb. 24, 1978, in Boca Raton, Fla.
He was an electrical engineer and for 33 years he owned and operated Automation Products Manufacturing Inc., an electronics manufacturing company with national and international sales, in Boca Raton and Durango.
With his wife and son, Frederick Jr., he owned Bodo Quality Cleaners Inc., in Durango.
Mr. Feirn was also a Mason and he loved flying, hunting and deep-sea fishing. He taught many of his friends and family how to enjoy these sports. He also had a great love for music.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Eva Fligge Feirn of Durango; a son, Frederick Feirn Jr., of Durango; three daughters, Gail Judd of Irvine, Calif., Karen Hayes and Shari Nolen, both of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Joan Waite of Clinton, Wis.; a brother, Conrad Feirn of Bremen, Ga.; three grandchildren, Ryan and Stephanie Nolen and Alaina Judd; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Terry.
No services will be held, according to Mr. Feirn's wishes.
Vincent Howard Grove
Vincent Howard Grove died at his home in Bayfield on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003. He was 75.
Mr. Grove was born April 27, 1928, in Ignacio to Antonio and Bessie Tafoya. He married Bertha Burch on April 25, 1959.
Mr. Grove served in the U.S. Army in World War II and later joined the National Guard and the Southern Ute Veterans Committee.
"He was a kind and generous person and had great rapport with many people, including in Canada and Mexico," said Mr. Grove's stepson, Alden Naranjo. "He was respected by Native American communities throughout the country."
Mr. Grove was a police officer with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, a bus driver for Head Start and the Senior Center and an instructional aide for the Bureau of Indian Affairs school.
Mr. Grove was a roadman for the Native American Church, a sundancer, a sweat lodge leader and a member of the Southern Ute Elders Committee.
Surviving Mr. Grove are his wife, Bertha Grove, of Bayfield; four sons, Rodrick Grove of Bayfield, Rudley Weaver of Ignacio, Alden Naranjo of Ignacio and Terrence Naranjo of Kansas City, Kan. He also is survived by two daughters, Lynda D'Wolfe of Ignacio and Amber Baker of Pagosa Springs; and a brother, Lester Tafoya, of Rifle. He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Naranjo.
There will be a wake at the Grove family home today beginning at 6 p.m.
A graveside service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at the Ouray Memorial Cemetery.
Alden Naranjo and Everett Burch will officiate.

Helen Marie England
Helen Marie England died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at her home in Carlinville, Ill. She was 72.
Mrs. England was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Carlinville to Mark and Marie Breymann Meyer.
She married Dr. Robert G. England on June 2, 1963, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Carlinville.
Mrs. England was a 1948 graduate of Carlinville High School and graduated from Hickey Business School and Valparaiso University.
She worked as a bookkeeper at Carlinville Clinic and in medical records at Carlinville Area Hospital.
Mrs. England was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Surviving Mrs. England are her husband, Robert G. England, of Carlinville, and three stepsons, Andrew England of Durango, Edward England of Chicago and Fred England of Springfield, Ill. She also is survived by daughters, Gail England of Hinsdale, Ill., and Susan Cosenza of Carlinville.
Mrs. England also is survived by six grandchildren, Elvira, Irene, Owen and Robert England and Katherine and Annamarie Cosenza.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Carlinville. The Rev. Wayne Shipley will officiate.
The Heinz Funeral Home is in charge of services. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Carlinville.
Jamie Beth Wendt
Jamie Beth Wendt, 40, of Woodland Park, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Colorado Springs. The cause of death was cancer.
Ms. Wendt was born Feb. 12, 1963, in Beaver Dam, Wis. Her family moved to Woodland Park in 1965 where Ms. Wendt attended area schools and Pike Community College.
She was employed at Ben Franklin/Drakes Pharmacy until her illness last year.
Ms. Wendt enjoyed rugged outdoor adventures with her horses, her dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle. She loved working on her muscle car, a 1967 Camaro.
She also enjoyed hunting for crystals, working intricate puzzles, doing delicate beadwork and painting detailed crafts.
She loved animals, especially her pet African gray parrot, Giggle Bird.
Ms. Wendt is survived by her significant other, Ed Burris of Woodland Park; her parents, Jim and Cindy Wendt of Mancos and Sally Wendt and Frank Herrera of Parker; four sisters, Ardi Kalter of Austin, Texas, Mandi Burhans of Longmont, JaymiLou Bellotti of Rifle, and Roberta Emerick of Colorado Springs; five brothers, Sam Eggleston of Longmont, John Herrera of Greeley, Pete Herrera of Margate, Fla., Anthony Herrera of Castle Rock and David Herrera of Parker.
A memorial service was held in Woodland Park with burial at Crystal Valley Cemetery in Manitou Springs.
