Ralph Stanley 'Stan' Gardner

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Former Montrose resident, Ralph Stanley "Stan" Gardner, age 69, died Wednesday afternoon, March 21, 2001, at his home in Claremore, Okla.
Ralph, or Stan as he preferred to be called, the son of Ernest James Gardner and Inger Marie (Jacoben) Gardner, was born on Aug. 22, 1931, in Montrose, Colo., where he spent his childhood years, attended elementary through high school, and grew to adulthood.
Stan proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from July 1950 until he was honorably discharged in July 1961.
On Sept. 28, 1951, he was joined in marriage with Joan Ione Simon in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. They would have celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary this year in September.
Prior to his retirement, Stan was employed with the Spartan School of Aeronautics. In September 1988, the Gardeners moved from Cincinnati, Ohio, to the Claremore, Okla., area where they made their home until the time of Stan's death.
Stan and Joan were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints.
He greatly enjoyed reading, computer games, and playing racquetball until he was stricken with cancer and Parkinson's disease. Stan's love for his family was strong and steadfast, as was his devotion and loyalty to his church. He was not ashamed to be numbered among those who loved and served Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father. He loved the prophet.
Surviving family members very grateful to share Stan's life include his wife, Joan Gardner, of the family home in Claremore, Okla.; two sons: Michael Stanley Gardner, of Claremore, Okla.; Mark Wayne Gardner, of Tulsa, Okla.; and two daughters: Cheryl Lynne Goodman, of Beavercreek, Ohio; and Cathy Gardner, of Sun Valley, Nev.
Stan was the proud and loving grandfather of eight precious granddaughters: Laura and Renee Goodman, of Florida; Kara Gardner Howard, of Provo, Utah; Andrea and Allison Gardner, of Claremore, Okla.; Diana and Jennifer Emnas, of Sparks, Nev.; Amber Gardner Muzzurco, of Thornton; three grandsons: Paul Emnas, of Sparks, Nev.; Grant Gardner, who is currently serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Bahia Blanca, Argentina; Jeffrey Goodman, of Orlando, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Ann Muzzurco, of Thornton.
Other family survivors include one sister, Ernestine Johnson, of Montrose.
Stan was preceded in death by one son, Todd James Gardner; both of his parents; and one sister, Marie Hatcher.
Funeral Services to honor and celebrate Stan's life will be officiated by Bishop Roddy Russo on Sunday, March 25, at 4 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Claremore, Okla. The service will conclude at the church.
Graveside Services will be officiated on Tuesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. in the Cedar Cemetery
at Montrose.

L.T. Mangum

Jan. 15, 1912 - March 24, 2001
DELTA - L.T. Mangum, age 89, of Delta died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Delta County Memorial Hospital, Delta, Colo.
He was born Jan. 15, 1912 in Chestnut, La. to Samuel and Minnie (Boyd) Mangum. He married Margaret L. Ellis on Aug. 31, 1934 in Edenburg, Texas. Margaret preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 2000 in Delta.
L.T. was a member of Delta United Methodist Church in Delta, Colo. He was a faithful member and had served his church in numerous capacities.
After graduating from Castor High School, Castor, La., L.T. moved to the lower Rio Grande Valley. In 1949 he moved to Fort Stockton, Texas where he lived until 1959 when he moved to Delta, Colo. He moved to Delta to purchase Delta Implement, a business that is still family owned and operated, a fact of which he was very proud.
L.T. was a very active member of the Delta community having served a term as Delta County Commissioner, a term on the Delta City Council; serving as mayor for one term, Delta planning commission, the Delta Library Board, and had served on the Colorado Governor's Hiway Safety Committee for four years. He was a past member of the Delta Rotary Club.
He is survived by two sons, Ralph and wife Pat Mangum and David Mangum both of Delta; a daughter, Betsy Stevens of Seattle, Wash.; two granddaughters, Gina Cassel of Delta and Vanir Stevens of Seattle, Wash.; three great-grandchildren; a brother, B.E. Mangum of Winnsboro, La.; and a sister, Lou Baxter of Natchitoches, La.
L.T. was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and seven brothers.
Visitation will be held at Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery on Monday, March 26, 2001 from 4-7 p.m.
Funeral services in loving remembrance of L.T. will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Delta United Methodist Church in Delta. Interment will follow at the Delta City Cemetery.

Richard H. "Dick' Rupp

MONTROSE -- Richard H. "Dick" Rupp, age 90, of Montrose, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, 2001, at his home in Montrose.
Born in Baldwin, N.D., on Sept. 28, 1911, Richard H. Rupp was the son of Theodore Rupp and Anna (Herdebu) Rupp. He spent his childhood years in the Baldwin and Bismarck, N.D. areas, graduated from high school in Bismarck, and continued to pursue his education by attending college in North Dakota.
On Jan. 14, 1995, Dick was joined in married with Tina (Cotton) Terrell-Rupp in Longmont, Colo. Following their marriage, Dick moved to Montrose where he and Tina made their home until the time of his death. He was previously married to Dorothy who preceded him in death in 1991.
During his working years, Dick was employed as a pharmacist, both in retail and with hospitals.
He was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club, Methodist Men, and the Elks Lodge.
One of Dick's favorite pastimes was repairing various things and working with cars. He volunteered at the Montrose Memorial Hospital up to the date of his death. The gift of Dick's presence and his life will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Surviving family members who had the privilege of sharing Dick's life include his wife, Tina Rupp, of Montrose; two children: Judith Ann Quam, of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; Gerald R. Rupp and wife Kathy, of Longmont; two stepchildren: Carol and husband John Overholser, of Montrose; and Buddy Lee "Bud" Terrell and wife Sirpa, of Dallas, Texas.
Dick was the proud grandfather of seven precious grandchildren: Paul Rupp, Chris Rupp, Rebecca Rupp, Jennifer Rupp, Jeff Quam, Jay Quam, Steve Quam; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
At Dick's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service in loving remembrance and to honor his life will be officiated by Rev. Stephen Warren on Saturday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Montrose. The service will conclude at the church.

Naomi Hazel Merryman

DELTA -- Naomi Hazel Merryman, age 91, of Delta, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta of natural causes.
Naomi was born on March 23, 1910 in Ulysses, Neb. to William W. Jones and Lula A. (Eaton) Jones. She spent her childhood and received her education at Litchfield, Neb.
On Dec. 12, 1933, she was joined in marriage with Morris R. Merryman at Loup City, Neb. He preceded her in death on July 13, 2001 in Delta.
Naomi, a homemaker, had lived in Delta since 1988, moving from Shickley, Neb.
She was a member of the World Harvest Church of Grand Junction, Colo. and was also a member of the Community Women's Club & Methodist Women in Shickley, Neb.
Naomi served as librarian in Shickley, Neb. from 1962-1968 and substituted in that position for several years prior; she also did upholstery work out of her home.
Her special interests included: sewing, gardening, traveling, reading, library work and going for rides.
She is survived by a son, Glen Merryman and wife Virginia of Delta; daughters, Jean and husband Randy Culp of Montrose, and Elaine Davenport of Hebron, Neb.; six grandchildren, Marla and husband John Moralez of Delta; Carla and husband John Cappetto of Grand Junction; Donna and husband Dale Harper of Studley, Kan.; Nathan Culp of Montrose; Angela Culp of Mesa, Ariz.; Jena Davenport of Hebron, Neb.; 11 great-grandchildren, Nicki, Izaac, Toney, Stephanie, Rachel, KaCee, Chase, Kaitlyn, Amethyst, Teagan and Manney; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Naomi is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Leone Spielman of Fairbury, Neb. and Caroline Merryman of Cook Station, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Troy.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at Taylor Funeral Service-Delta.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at the Delta City Cemetery
with Pastor John Cappetto and Pastor Dale Harper officiating.

Forest Henry Stewart
Loved God, Family, His Country

MONTROSE -- Forest Henry Stewart, age 93, of Montrose, died of natural causes Friday, June 7, 2002, at the family home in Shavano Valley, near Montrose.
Forest Henry Stewart was born to Samuel Henry Stewart and Abbie Melissa (Huey) Stewart on June 22, 1908 at Cameron, Mo. The Stewart family moved to Adair, Okla., in 1909, when Forest was 6 months old, where his father was owner of a livery barn. Due to the ill health of his father, the family moved to Norwood, Colo. in 1919, where they resided until 1922 when they moved to Grand Junction, Colo., living there for several years.
Forest was in the United States National Guard from 1926 to 1932. He then went to Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked for a short time, returning to Montrose, Colo., where he courted Mary E. Rogers. Forest and Mary were united in marriage on Nov. 21, 1932, at the Congregational Church in Montrose.
To their marriage eight children were born: Twin daughters: Margaruite May and Marjorie Fay (deceased); twin sons: Samuel Henry Stewart and wife JoMarie; William Forest Stewart and wife Marlene, both sons are residents of Montrose; Bettie Joanne and husband Kenneth, of Loma; Wilna Edra Stewart, of Montrose; Janet Marie Moreland (William, deceased), of Belem, Para, Brazil; and Robert Lee Stewart (deceased).
Forest is also survived by one brother, Everett F. Stewart, of Grand Junction, Colo.; and two sisters: Bettie L. Gregg and Helen F. Leonardeili, both of Durango. One brother, Harvey David Stewart; and one sister, Amanda F. Lechleiter, are deceased.
Forest was a resident of the Stewart farm for 68 years where he was active in farming and ranching. During the years after World War II, when prices had dropped for farm products, he went to work in the mines from 1950 to 1956 at Ouray, Telluride and eventually Uravan. Forest's sons, Bill and Sam, helped him on the farm until Bill was drafted into the United States Army. After mining for a period of time, Forest returned to the farm where he and son Sam operated the farming and ranching business. Following his retirement, Forest traveled off and on visiting family and friends.
His wife, Mary, preceded him in death in 1985 at Montrose, Colo.
He was a former member of the Uncompahgre Valley Cattlemen's Association.
Forest was a Godly man who loved the Lord God and his church, being a member of the Christian Church since the age of 10. He loved his country, and he loved his family. He was proud of his children and their spouses and was totally delighted with his grandchildren. He was equally pleased with his great-grandchildren. He was happy to have lived to see his first great-great-grandchild. He had 19 living grandchildren, 30 living great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Forest was a great story teller and he held us all enthralled. His grandchildren thought him to be a loving, patient man and fun to be with.
We, his children, feel we were equally loved and cherished. He will be missed by us all. We hope we can live up to the legacy he left -- to be Godly people, who love God and His church and our families and serve our country to the best of our abilities.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
A funeral service in celebration of Forest's life will be officiated by Minister Ronnie Hanna Thursday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at the Montrose Christian Church, with interment following in the Valley Lawns Cemetery, south of Montrose.

Thomas Cleveland Alley

MONTROSE -- Thomas Cleveland "Tom" Alley, age 71, a resident of Montrose for 49 years, died of a long term illness Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at the Montrose Memorial Hospital in Montrose.
Thomas Cleveland Alley, the son of Howard and Marjorie (Skates) Alley, was born on Oct. 27, 1931, at Del Norte, Colo. He spent his childhood years in the San Luis Valley and graduated from high school at Center, Colo. He continued to pursue his education at Mesa College in Grand Junction for two years.
He moved from the San Luis Valley to Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.
On Aug. 26, 1958, Tom was united in marriage with Patsy Martin at Montrose, Colo. Tom and Patsy shared 23 wonderful years together prior to Patsy's death on Aug. 7, 1982, in Grand Junction, Colo., 19 days before they would have celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary at Montrose.
Tom was a retired groceryman. He owned South Side Grocery in Montrose 23 years before his retirement.
He was a 47-year member of Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053, a Tiler for 45 years, and belonged to the Associated Grocers for 23 years.
He attended Montrose Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation weekly and meetings for the blind on a monthly basis. After his wife's death, Tom attended the Colorado School of the Blind in Denver. This important training allowed him to continue to live independently.
Tom's most favorite event was the annual "Alley Family Expedition" to Saguache Park for camping and fishing.
Surviving family members who were proud to share Tom's life include two sons: Tim Alley, of Arvada, Colo.; Brian Alley, of Greeley, Colo.; two grandchildren; three brothers: Russell Alley, of Grand Junction, Colo.; A. Blaine Alley, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; David Alley, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sisters: Charlotte Winner, of Broomfield, Colo.; and Clara Jo Zarret, of Louisville, Colo.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Patsy, Tom was also preceded in death by one daughter, Heidi Alley.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 30, from noon until 2 p.m.(service time) at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
A funeral service in celebration of Tom's life will be officiated by Montrose Elks Lodge Saturday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Grand View Cemetery
and a potluck reception at the Montrose Elks.

OLATHE -- Jessie Thomas McCleary Jr., 39, Olathe, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Montrose, Colo.
Survivors include his fiancˇe, Juanita Veith and her children: Jessica and Jeremy, all of Olathe, Colo.; his biological daughter, Jessica Helen McCleary, of Gypsum, Colo.; his mother, Viola Fry; grandmother, Ruby Morlang; and a brother, John McCleary, all of Montrose, Colo.; three sisters: Laurie Ann Phillips, of Cedaredge, Colo.; Laurie Etta Malone and Ruby Fry, both of Montrose, Colo.; and three nephews: Randy McCleary, Anthony Dalpaz and John E. McCleary.
At Jessie's request, cremation has taken place. A casual memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. Following the service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the residence of Juanita Veith, 2075 Corey Ave., in Olathe.

Ethel M. Andrews
MONTROSE - Ethel M. Andrews, of Montrose, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2003, at the Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose at the age of 94.
Ethel M. Scott, the first of 11 children, was born in Manchester, Ky., on March 8, 1909, the daughter of Walter and Pearlina (Marcum) Scott. In 1912, when she was 3 years old, she moved with her family from Kentucky to Olathe. She spent her childhood and attended school in Olathe, graduating from Montrose County High School in 1930.
On Dec. 28, 1932, Ethel entered into marriage and a lifetime partnership with the love of her life, Lloyd Andrews, in Montrose, Colo. Ethel and Lloyd were privileged to share 69 wonderful years of marriage prior to Lloyd's death on June 13, 2002, in Montrose.
Along with being a homemaker, Ethel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
In 1956 the family moved to San Diego, Calif., where they resided until 1973. They then returned to Montrose where they made their home until the time of their deaths.
Ethel was a faithful member of the Montrose Christian Church.
She had a great love for music, sewing, her family and her church. Ethel enjoyed canning. She was a mother figure to her brothers and sisters.
Surviving family members who were honored to share Ethel's life include her two children: Jean Risenhoover, of Eldon, Mo.; Loydel Epstein, of Alpine, Calif.; two grandchildren: Debbie Thelen, of Moore, S.C.; Ken Risenhoover, of Olympia, Wash.; great-grandchildren: Beth and husband Jason Gross; Sarah and husband Shannon Mahone; Matthew Thelen, all of Moore, S.C.; Tera, Kelly and Jennifer Risenhoover, all of Olympia, Wash.; and great-great-grandchildren: Hannah Gross, Rebecca Gross and Grace Mahone, all of Moore, S.C.
Other family survivors include Ethel's brothers and sisters: Ray Roberts, of Delta; Russ Roberts, Conn Roberts, May Nora Smidt, Margaret Cook and Verlee Wilkes, all of Montrose.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Lloyd, Ethel was also preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Elaine; three brothers and one sister: Henry Roberts, Ernest Roberts, Walter S. "Huck" Roberts Jr. and Edith M. Russell.
A funeral service in celebration of Ethel's life will be officiated by Minister Ronnie Hanna on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.

DELTA -- Lela Retha Wilcox, 85, Delta, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at her home in Delta.
Survivors include one son, Leroy Wilcox, of Delta; one daughter, Lena Ziegler, of Golden; one stepdaughter, Jean Hehn, of Delta; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. in the Mesa View Cemetery
at Delta.

MONTROSE -- Nancy Florence Hill, 92, Montrose, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 18, 2002, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
A funeral service and interment will take place in San Diego, Calif.

GRAND JUNCTION -- Lucy Cosslett, 82, Grand Junction, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert.
Survivors include one brother, Keith Reich and wife Mary, of Indiana; one sister, Beulah Edwards, of Paonia, Colo.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
At Lucy's request, there will be no service held at this time.

MONTROSE -- Philip S. "Phil" James, 63, Montrose, died Thursday night, June 5, 2003, at the Montrose Memorial Hospital in Montrose.
Survivors include his wife, Leona James, of the family home at Montrose, Colo.; and three sons: Phil James, of Erie, Colo.; Todd James, of Loveland, Colo., and Kirk James, also of Erie, Colo.

DELTA -- Ruby Mae MacKendrick, 77, Delta, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Survivors include her husband, Fred A. MacKendrick, of Delta; two sons: Ron MacKendrick and wife Judi, of Cedaredge; Bill MacKendrick and wife Ann, of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Barbara Barber, of Delta; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Irvin Frazier and wife Evelyn, of Delta; Lester Frazier and wife Lynda, of Port Lavoca, Texas; and three sisters: Faye Gray, of Hotchkiss; Ethel Hall, of Vernal, Utah; and Frances and husband Joe English, of Montrose.

MONTROSE -- Dorothy E. Henrie, of Montrose, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 14, 2002, at her home in Montrose at age 63.
Dorothy Henrie was born on March 17, 1939, in Rifle, Colo., the daughter of Catherine (Pearson) Henrie and stepdaughter of Leo Henrie. She spent her childhood years and graduated from high school at Price, Utah.
She worked as a telemarketing salesperson.
Approximately six years ago after living in Limon, Colo., for many years, Dorothy moved to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.
Dorothy always loved and enjoyed family time, especially camping. She loved the outdoors, a good book and reading. Dorothy was a Christian. She knew the Lord and spent time in her later years praying for loved ones. Comfort will be taken in knowing Dorothy is safe in the arms of God's love forever. She held a place in this world that no one else could fill. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving family members include her stepfather, Leo Henrie, of Montrose, Colo.; a daughter, Laura (Selle) Archer; three brothers: Terry Henrie, of Blanca, Colo.; Ed Henrie and Frank Henrie, both of Montrose, Colo.; and a half sister, Verna Lee Austen.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine Henrie, and a brother, Dean Henrie.
Cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
