Ralph Stanley 'Stan' Gardner

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Former Montrose resident, Ralph Stanley "Stan" Gardner, age 69, died Wednesday afternoon, March 21, 2001, at his home in Claremore, Okla.
Ralph, or Stan as he preferred to be called, the son of Ernest James Gardner and Inger Marie (Jacoben) Gardner, was born on Aug. 22, 1931, in Montrose, Colo., where he spent his childhood years, attended elementary through high school, and grew to adulthood.
Stan proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from July 1950 until he was honorably discharged in July 1961.
On Sept. 28, 1951, he was joined in marriage with Joan Ione Simon in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. They would have celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary this year in September.
Prior to his retirement, Stan was employed with the Spartan School of Aeronautics. In September 1988, the Gardeners moved from Cincinnati, Ohio, to the Claremore, Okla., area where they made their home until the time of Stan's death.
Stan and Joan were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints.
He greatly enjoyed reading, computer games, and playing racquetball until he was stricken with cancer and Parkinson's disease. Stan's love for his family was strong and steadfast, as was his devotion and loyalty to his church. He was not ashamed to be numbered among those who loved and served Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father. He loved the prophet.
Surviving family members very grateful to share Stan's life include his wife, Joan Gardner, of the family home in Claremore, Okla.; two sons: Michael Stanley Gardner, of Claremore, Okla.; Mark Wayne Gardner, of Tulsa, Okla.; and two daughters: Cheryl Lynne Goodman, of Beavercreek, Ohio; and Cathy Gardner, of Sun Valley, Nev.
Stan was the proud and loving grandfather of eight precious granddaughters: Laura and Renee Goodman, of Florida; Kara Gardner Howard, of Provo, Utah; Andrea and Allison Gardner, of Claremore, Okla.; Diana and Jennifer Emnas, of Sparks, Nev.; Amber Gardner Muzzurco, of Thornton; three grandsons: Paul Emnas, of Sparks, Nev.; Grant Gardner, who is currently serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Bahia Blanca, Argentina; Jeffrey Goodman, of Orlando, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Ann Muzzurco, of Thornton.
Other family survivors include one sister, Ernestine Johnson, of Montrose.
Stan was preceded in death by one son, Todd James Gardner; both of his parents; and one sister, Marie Hatcher.
Funeral Services to honor and celebrate Stan's life will be officiated by Bishop Roddy Russo on Sunday, March 25, at 4 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Claremore, Okla. The service will conclude at the church.
Graveside Services will be officiated on Tuesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. in the Cedar Cemetery
at Montrose.

L.T. Mangum
Businessman/Civic Leader
Jan. 15, 1912 - March 24, 2001
DELTA - L.T. Mangum, age 89, of Delta died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Delta County Memorial Hospital, Delta, Colo.
He was born Jan. 15, 1912 in Chestnut, La. to Samuel and Minnie (Boyd) Mangum. He married Margaret L. Ellis on Aug. 31, 1934 in Edenburg, Texas. Margaret preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 2000 in Delta.
L.T. was a member of Delta United Methodist Church in Delta, Colo. He was a faithful member and had served his church in numerous capacities.
After graduating from Castor High School, Castor, La., L.T. moved to the lower Rio Grande Valley. In 1949 he moved to Fort Stockton, Texas where he lived until 1959 when he moved to Delta, Colo. He moved to Delta to purchase Delta Implement, a business that is still family owned and operated, a fact of which he was very proud.
L.T. was a very active member of the Delta community having served a term as Delta County Commissioner, a term on the Delta City Council; serving as mayor for one term, Delta planning commission, the Delta Library Board, and had served on the Colorado Governor's Hiway Safety Committee for four years. He was a past member of the Delta Rotary Club.
He is survived by two sons, Ralph and wife Pat Mangum and David Mangum both of Delta; a daughter, Betsy Stevens of Seattle, Wash.; two granddaughters, Gina Cassel of Delta and Vanir Stevens of Seattle, Wash.; three great-grandchildren; a brother, B.E. Mangum of Winnsboro, La.; and a sister, Lou Baxter of Natchitoches, La.
L.T. was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and seven brothers.
Visitation will be held at Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery on Monday, March 26, 2001 from 4-7 p.m.
Funeral services in loving remembrance of L.T. will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Delta United Methodist Church in Delta. Interment will follow at the Delta City Cemetery.

Samuel Cosby Colbaugh
Longtime Delta Resident

DELTA - Longtime Delta, Colo. resident, Samuel Cosby Colbaugh, age 73, died on Friday, March 23, 2001 at his residence in Delta.
He was born on March 17, 1928 at Corona, N.M. to Thomas and Mary (Cosby) Colbaugh. He spent his childhood at Corona and graduated from Delta High School in 1945. He attended Western State College in Gunnison from 1947-48.
He served in the Army as a Private First Class.
Samuel married Marilyn Butler on May 1, 1953 in Eckert, Colo.
A 57 year resident of Delta, Colo., he worked for Meadow Gold for 25 years and then worked in maintenance for Delta County. He retired in 1998.
He was a member of the American Legion in Delta and the Cottonwood Golf Club. He enjoyed golf, fishing and spending time with family.
In addition to his wife, Marilyn Colbaugh of Delta, he is survived by a son, Mike Colbaugh and wife Mandy of Delta; two daughters, Patty and husband Frank Antal and Kathy and husband Max Myers, all of Delta; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his mother, Mary Colbaugh of Delta; a brother, Thomas Colbaugh and wife Rebecca of Delta; and two sisters, Margie and husband Dick Wood of Grand Junction and Leola Richardson of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service in loving remembrance of Samuel Colbaugh will be held on Monday, March 26, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta with Pastor Grady Allison officiating.

Alvis Applebury
World War II Veteran

AVALON, Mo. - Alvis Applebury, age 80, a resident of Avalon, Mo., died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in the Research Hospital at Kansas City, Mo.
Alvis Applebury was born on April 21, 1920, in Carroll County, Mo., the son of Gifford and Edna (Daugherty) Applebury. He was a 1939 graduate of the Avalon High School in Avalon, Mo.
During World War II, Alvis proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1942 until 1945 where he was a Master Sergeant.
On March 27, 1945, he was joined in marriage with Susan Zeisler in Chillicothe, Mo. Alvis died two days before he and his wife would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.
Although Alvis began farming in 1946 and was named the "Outstanding Farmer" in 1955, most will remember him doing what he loved best, selling cars.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Chillicothe, Mo., and belonged to the Chillicothe Optimist Club for 35 years. He was a YMCA Y Pal Volunteer for five years.
Surviving family members include his wife, Susan Applebury, of Avalon, Mo.; one son, Buell Applebury and wife Judy, of Chillicothe, Mo.; one daughter, Kay and husband Richard Lett, of Montrose; five precious grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Henry Applebury and wife Freda, of Chillicothe, Mo.; two sisters: Jane and husband Hurless King, of Chillicothe, Mo.; Jean and husband Tommy Plummer, of Fort Worth, Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews.
There is no scheduled family visitation. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, and from 8 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at the Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe, Mo.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Alvis' life will be officiated on Wednesday, March 28, at 11 a.m. at the Lindley Funeral Home Chapel in Chillicothe, Mo.
Interment will follow the service in the Braden Cemetery
at Bogard, Mo.

David A. Fansler

OLATHE - David A. Fansler, age 89, a resident of Olathe since 1988, died Wednesday afternoon, March 21, 2001, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.
David A. Fansler was born in Vera, Okla., on April 25, 1911, the son of Harmon Fansler and Mary (Shockley) Fansler. He spent his childhood years in Eastern Colorado.
David proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He served a total of six and a half years in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
On Feb. 8, 1942, David was joined in marriage with Wilma B. Grant. They were the parents of four children and had the privilege of sharing 59 wonderful years together last month on Feb. 8.
Prior to his retirement, David was employed as an evaporator/dryer operator for a creamery in Idaho. In 1988, the Fanslers moved from Idaho to Olathe where they made their home until the time of David's death.
He was a member of the American Legion.
David was a people person and just loved talking to people. Other loves in his life that brought him so much happiness during his lifetime include fishing, whittling, leatherwork, treasure hunting, and reading.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share David's life include his wife, Wilma A. Fansler, of Olathe; one son, Daniel Fansler and wife Zora, of Jerome, Idaho; three daughters: Connie and husband Curtis Hendrix, of Breckenridge, Texas; Grace Becker, of Casper, Wyo.; Willa Cobb, of Lebanon, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three brothers: Robert Fansler and wife Ruby, of California; Harold Fansler and wife Fran, of Colorado; Harmon Fansler and wife June, of Missouri; and three sisters: LeVina and husband Glenn Hitchcock, of Colorado; Doris and husband Warren Maxwell; and Marie and husband Dement Brown, all of Oregon.
David was preceded in death by both of his parents and three brothers.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor David's life were officiated on Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m. in the Olathe Cemetery
at Olathe, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the American Legion.

Joe Fuentes

MONTROSE - Joe Fuentes, age 76, a resident of Montrose since 1989, died Friday evening, March 23, 2001, at his home in Montrose.
Joe Fuentes was born in Azusa, Calif., on July 30, 1924, the son of Cesario Fuentes and Jovita (Barba) Fuentes. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood, in California.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
On July 7, 1949, Joe was joined in marriage with Nancy Dotherrow in Ventura, Calif. Nancy preceded Joe in death in 1977 in Ventura, Calif.
Prior to his retirement, Joe was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the County of Ventura, Calif.
He moved from California to Montrose in 1989 where he made his home until the time of his death. While living in Montrose, he worked as a court interpreter for the Montrose area for many years.
Joe loved his family and his grandchildren were very special to him.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Joe's life include one son, Scott Fuentes, of Darby, Mont.; one daughter, Mary and husband Larry Thomas, of Montrose; three precious grandchildren: Leigha and husband Cooper Bowden, of Ogden, Utah; Wade and Brett Thomas, of Montrose; and two great-grandchildren: Bryce and Ariel Bowden.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Jesse Orozco, of Ventura, Calif.; and Trini Chavez, of Oxnard, Calif.
In addition to both of his parents and his wife, Nancy, Joe was also preceded in death by one sister.
At Joe's request cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Tammy Lynn Strecker Hopkins

April 29, 1960 - March 25, 2001
NUCLA - Tammy Lynn Strecker Hopkins, age 40, of Nucla, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 25, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital & Medical Center at Grand Junction.
Tammy Lynn Powers, the daughter of Alvin Powers and Betty Mae (Bleeker) Powers, was born on April 29, 1960, in Denver, Colo. She went to school at Lyons, Colo. She attended nursing school at the Veterans Hospital in Rifle.
Tammy made her home in Nucla/Naturita with her children, living there over 20 years. She was a homemaker and also a truck driver for Gould Construction out of Glenwood Springs.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Tammy loved traveling, working in the yard, reading, and working on her home. She enjoyed yard sales, flea markets, and country music with her friends.
Tammy loved her three sons as well as all her family and was always there for them. Tammy was very happy in life being mom, dad, sister and grandma.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Tammy's life include three sons: David Strecker and wife Lisa, of Rifle; Michael Randolph, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Justin Randolph, of Nucla; and two precious grandchildren: Tiffany and Dalton.
Other family survivors include one brother, Randy Powers, of Michigan; two sisters: Alvina and husband Rick Taber, of Nucla; Linda Mackey, of Yuma, Ariz.; four nieces: Heather, April, Molly, and Tonya; and two nephews: Dustin and Michael.
Tammy was preceded in death by her mother and father and one sister.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to say farewell to Tammy will be officiated on Thursday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in the Nucla Cemetery.
