PASADENA, Texas - Richard "Rich" Charles Manning, 81, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2001 in Pasadena, Texas.
Rich was born on Dec. 25, 1919 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.
Rich was a resident of Sequim, Wash. for 18 years and was also a resident of Montrose, Colo. He was employed by Shell in 1950 in Gardena, Calif. In 1954, he was transferred to Shell Chemical Company in Pasadena, Texas. He retired in 1978 from Shell's Houston office.
Rich served in World War II as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Joyce Manning; sisters, Shirley Goudrey and Moyra Kirkland of Canada; daughter Melanie Zoch; sons, Richard Manning and wife Susan, David Manning and wife Katrina, Scott Manning and wife Lana, and Paul Manning.
He is also survived by grandchildren Michelle Manning Lorino, Kristi Davis, Robert Castleman, Spencer Manning, Richard A. Manning, Maritza Manning, Jennifer Manning and Tiffany Manning.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Rich's name to the American Heart Association.

Naomi 'Jean' Stine

Aug. 2, 1924 - March 7, 2001
MONTROSE - Naomi "Jean" Stine, age 76, of Montrose, died Wednesday evening, March 7, 2001 at the Colorow Care Center in Olathe following an extended illness.
Naomi "Jean" was born on Aug. 2, 1924 in a sod house at Broken Bow, Neb. to Floyd and Viva A. (Hogue) Furrow. She moved with her family to Idaho in the 1930s. She spent her childhood at Wilder, Idaho, graduating from high school at Wilder in 1942.
After graduation, she moved to Santa Cruz and went to school at Western Union. She worked for Western Union during the war (WWII) after which she met and married Carl Stein on June 9, 1945 in Seattle, Wash.
During her lifetime, she was employed as a bookkeeper and in sales.
Jean and Carl moved to Montrose in 1971 and owned and operated the Black Canyon Corner Gift Shop from 1971 to 1977.
Jean continued to work at Domes Hallmark in Montrose from 1977 to 1991 when she retired to play pinochle.
In addition to being a member of the Jolly Hour Pinochle Club, Jean also enjoyed her family and participating in family activities.
Jean is survived by her husband, Carl W. Stine, of Montrose; one son, Ronald Stine and wife Vicky of Montrose; one daughter, Pam and husband Bob Henson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
Other survivors include a brother, James Furrow and wife Mary of Visalia, Calif.; and a sister, Doris Krostag of Boise, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Graveside services in loving remembrance of Jean Stine will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 10 a.m. at Valley Lawn Cemetery.

Nives Thayer
Family, Church Her Life
July 27, 1932 - March 2, 2001
GRAND JUNCTION - Former Montrose resident, Nives Thayer, age 68, a residence of Grand Junction since 1988, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction from complications of vascular disease. Nives was a home health professional until she was forced to quit working in 1999 due to poor health following open-heart surgery.
Nives Tont was born on July 27, 1932, the daughter of Alberto and Maria (Sansone) Tont.
In 1952, she married Allan Guy Thayer in Trieste, Italy. They lived in Trieste and then Germany prior to moving to the United States in 1956.
After Allan retired from the United States Air Force, they moved to Montrose in 1970. The Thayers marriage ended in divorce in 1986, and Nives moved to Grand Junction in 1988 where she remained until the time of her death. Allan survives.
She was a member of the Westgate Freewill Baptist Church.
Her family and her church were Nives' life. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Nives' life include two sons: Allan Thayer and wife Sharon, of Dolores; Jonny Thayer and wife Tonya, of Delta; three daughters: Maria Decker, of Delta; Jo-Anna Dalton and Rory Lopez; Theresia and husband Tom Holman, all of Grand Junction; and one daughter-in-law, Patti Thayer, of Alaska.
Nives was the proud and loving grandmother of 13 grandchildren: Shawn and Kristen Thayer; Charlie, Tonya, and Crystal Decker; John Coats and wife Teresa; Gara and husband Steve Black, of Crawford; Jeannie and fiance Nathan Cutler; Wendy, Jonny, and Dustin Thayer; and Lindsay and Casey Holman; and seven great-grandchildren: Michael Decker, Cameron Sill, Zoe Thayer, Dakota and Ty Coats, and Makayla and Christopher Black.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Guerrino and Mario, who reside in Trieste, Italy.
Cremation has taken place, with Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Nives' life to be officiated by Pastor Bob Lewis on Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel, 2515 Patterson Rd., in Grand Junction. The service will conclude at the chapel.

James Leonard 'Jim' Gwin
Former Montrose Resident
March 13, 1936 - March 6, 2001
CASPER, Wyo. - Former Montrose resident, James Leonard "Jim" Gwin, age 64, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Casper, Wyo., seven days before he would have celebrated his 65th birthday.
James Leonard Gwin was born in Montrose, Colo., on March 13, 1936, the son of Eugene and Carrie (Nielson) Gwin. He graduated from CSU with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1959 until 1961.
On April 2, 1966, he was joined in marriage with Eunice M. Tipton in Cheyenne, Wyo. They were the parents of two children and were privileged to share 34 years of marriage.
He worked as an insurance salesman, and was a certified insurance counselor.
Jim was a member of the Elks Lodge, Casper Amateur Hockey Club, and Risk Manager for Wyoming Amateur Hockey Assn.
His family said Jim greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and all hockey games. Jim also enjoyed traveling, woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Jim's life include his wife, Eunice Gwin, of Casper, Wyo.; one daughter, Sharon and husband Steve Immerman, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one son, Jason Gwin, of Casper, Wyo.
Other family survivors include one brother, Chuck Gwin and family; one sister, Kay Collins and family, all of Montrose; several nieces, nephews, and two aunts.
Jim was preceded in death by both of his parents.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Jim's life will be officiated by The Rev. Tom Johnson, of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, on Monday, March 12, at 10 a.m. at the Bustard's Funeral Home Chapel at Casper, Wyo. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper, Wyo.

Donald Leon Scott
Loved the Children in His Life

HAMPSHIRE, Tenn. - Donald Leon "Don" Scott, of Hampshire Tenn., passed from this world Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, eight days after celebrating his 70th birthday.
Donald Leon Scott was born in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 16, 1931, the son of Leon Nichols and Annie Pearl Scott. He was educated in Gulf Port, Miss., and worked there as a route salesman for several years. His parents were members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Don was an Atheist and a member of The Sons of Confederate Veterans.
For the last 24 years he made his home in Hampshire, Tenn., where he owned Cathey's Creek Country Store and Diamond 'S' Enterprises.
Don loved the children in his life, as well as enjoying birds, horses, and politics. A staunch Republican, Don was great friends with Gov. George Wallace and enjoyed many hours of political conversation with him throughout his life.
Don will be deeply missed by his family and friends who look forward to seeing him on the other side when they make their own journeys.
Those grateful to have shared his life include his wife, Bessie Himes Scott, of Hampshire, Tenn.; three daughters: Valerie Scott Curtis and husband David, of Pueblo; Margaret Scott, of Clinton, Ark.; Patricia Scott, of Damascus, Ark.; three sons: Fred Leon Scott and wife Terri, of Montrose; David Scott, of Mt. Pleasant, Tenn.; James Scott, stationed in Hawaii with the United States Navy; 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and five stepchildren: Paula Bumgardner, of Colorado Springs; Eddie Scott, of Arkansas; David Harville; Christopher Harville and wife Vanessa, all of Hampshire, Tenn.; and Brenda LeMay and husband Terry, of Culleoka, Tenn.
Don was preceded in death by both of his parents; one sister, Margaret Scott Greene, of Columbia, Tenn.; one stepchild, Mary Elaine Scott, of Pueblo; and one infant grandchild.
Services were officiated by State Rep. Bobby Sands and Sheriff Enoch George on Monday, Feb. 26, at Oakes & Nichols, with interment following the service in the Ebeneezer Cemetery.
Howard Lee 'Peck' Sizemore Sr.

MONTROSE - Howard Lee "Peck" Sizemore Sr., age 57, of Montrose, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, March 8, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital at Montrose.
Peck Sizemore was born on Sept. 20, 1943, in Montrose, Colo. After living around the United States, he returned to his home and worked for the City of Montrose for 22 years.
His loves in life included playing and coaching softball; his dogs: Rooster, Tater, Shotze, Taz, Spud; his granddogs: Bubba and Dayze; and helping his many friends in their times of need.
Peck was privileged to be surrounded by his family and many friends up to his last days. All who knew and loved Peck, whose lives were deeply touched by him, feel great sorrow and a huge unwanted emptiness and loss at his death, but know Peck is in a better place.
Peck Sizemore was the loving husband of Esther Scanlon Sizemore; the loving father of Howard Lee Sizemore Jr. and wife Danene; Karen Sizemore and Mike Lewter; brother of Grant Sizemore and Terri; Sarah and Mary Sizemore, of Denver; the loving grandfather to Jesyka and Jenese Sizemore; the loving brother-in-law of Sal and Linda Messina; Bobby and Sandy Scanlon, all of Baltimore, Md.; Barbara Prevento, of Salsbury, Md.; Charles and Celia Scanlon, of North Port, Fla.; and Darlene and Dave Dohler, of Baltimore, Md.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, March 12, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to say farewell to Peck will be officiated on Tuesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at the Montrose Pavilion.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.

Alexandra T. 'Alex' Haynes
Beloved Mother, Grandmother

MONTROSE - Alexandra T. "Alex" Haynes, age 88, of Montrose, died Thursday evening, March 8, 2001, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Alexandra T. Turner, the daughter of Kenneth V. Turner and Helen (Stewart) Turner, was born on May 18, 1912, in Seattle, Wash., where she spent her childhood years, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Alex moved to Spokane, Wash., with her husband, Bill Haynes, where they raised three children and then moved to California.
In 1993, Alex was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Haynes.
She loved the Lord, her children, and grandchildren. Alex grew beautiful flowers, enjoyed bird watching, and was never against having an adventure if it came her way.
Alex had a wonderful, dry sense of humor, was a support to her family, and always looked on the bright side of a situation. She will be deeply missed.
Survivors grateful to share Alex's life include one son, William A. Haynes; two daughters: Susan A. Schnetz and Sandra M. Underwood; five precious grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services to honor and celebrate Alex's life were officiated on Saturday, March 10, at 4:30 p.m. at the Delta Church of God. The service will conclude at the church.

Iris Lillian King
A Joy To Be With
July 20, 1910 - March 4, 2001
MONTROSE - Iris L. King, age 90, died Sunday afternoon, March 4, 2001, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Iris L. Impson was born on July 20, 1910, at Sams, Colo. She was the first of 12 children born to Don E. Impson and Lilly Grace (Sparks) Impson. Iris went to school and grew to adulthood in the Placerville canyon.
She worked hard all her life and was working at the hotel in Placerville when she met and then married Earl Carter in 1934. The marriage ended in divorce 17 years later.
Iris worked as a caretaker and cook at the Green Mountain Ranch six miles west of Placerville and later in Montrose for the same family.
In August of 1952, Iris met and married Jude King of Springfield, Ill. They traveled all over the western states and Jude ran a crew for the fruit orchards during harvest time from California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Iris and Jude both retired in 1990.
Upon Jude's death in 1994, Iris came to live with her brother, Clinton Impson and wife Barbara, to be close to her brothers and sisters. Ill health forced Iris to the nursing home for the constant care she needed.
She was a very caring person and always found a way to help others. She was a joy to be with and everyone she met loved her. Iris had no living children but she was always there to love her nieces and nephews.
Her greatest loved pastimes were fishing, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and bingo.
Surviving family who were blessed to share Iris's life include four sisters: Jeanie Daugherty and Madge Wolff, of Montrose; Dorothy Sale, of Olathe; Nelly Proper, of Clifton; one sister-in-law, Barbara Impson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Iris was preceded in death by both of her parents, five brothers, two sisters, and her husband, Jude.
Cremation has taken place, with Private Memorial Services to be held at a later date.
Lucaria 'Carrie' Trujillo
A Wonderful Homemaker
March 20, 1912 - March 5, 2001
GRAND JUNCTION - Lucaria "Carrie" Trujillo, age 88, of Grand Junction, died Monday, March 5, 2001, in her home at Grand Junction 15 days before she would have celebrated her 89th birthday.
Lucaria Carrie Trujillo was born in Raton, N.M., on March 20, 1912, the daughter of Simon and Barbarita (Candelaria) Trujillo.
On Feb. 9, 1932, Carrie was joined in marriage in Montrose, Colo., to Felix Trujillo, who preceded her in death. Carrie and Felix had the joy of being the parents of seven children.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta.
Carrie was a wonderful homemaker and she loved and enjoyed her family, gardening, baking cookies and bread.
Survivors very grateful to share Carrie's life include one son, Felix Trujillo, of Delta; and six daughters: Margaret Olvera, of Delta; Catherine Salazar, of Naturita; Senovia "Sunny" Lopez, of Grand Junction; Pat Abeyta, of Glendale, Ariz.; Lucia Trujillo, of Santa Fe, N.M.; and Susanna Trujillo, of San Francisco, Calif.
Carrie was the proud and loving grandmother of 18 precious grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Felix, Carrie was also preceded in death by five sisters, two brothers, and one son-in-law.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary, with Rosary being recited beginning at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church at Delta, with Rite of Committal following the Mass in the Mesa View Cemetery
at Delta.

Fred E. Zanett

OURAY - Fred E. Zanett, 85, an Ouray "old timer," passed away at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail, and son-in-law Joe Saunders of Montrose; his grandsons, Andrew of Albuquerque, N.M. and Denny, a student at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. His stepson Michael Sterling and daughter Tina live in Cedaredge.
A memorial service in honor of his life will be held at St. Daniels Catholic Church in Ouray on Monday, March 12 at 11 a.m.

Zelma Holcomb Kenimer
A Lifelong Learner
May 20, 1919 - March 9, 2001
GREENSBORO, Ga. - Zelma Holcomb Kenimer, age 81, a retired school teacher and a resident of Greensboro, Ga., since 1940, died Friday, March 9, 2001, in the Green Point Health Care Center at Greensboro, Ga.
Zelma Holcomb, the daughter of George Burton Holcomb and Cora Lee (Trotter) Holcomb, was born on May 20, 1919, at Habersham, Ga. Zelma was a 1936 Demorest High School graduate and received her teaching certificate at Piedmont College in Demorest. She continued to further her education at the University of Georgia, the University of Florida, and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Zelma taught third grade at Greensboro Primary School, taught kindergarten at the First United Methodist Church in Greensboro, Ga., and was one of the first Head Start teachers in Greene County prior to her retirement in 1980.
She married Lafayette Y. Kenimer in Greensboro, Ga., and they were privileged to be the parents of three children and shared 61 rich, wonderful years of marriage.
Zelma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, Ga., where she was a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. She was also a member and Past President of the 10th District Woman's Club and belonged to the Greensboro Garden Club.
Zelma was a lifelong learner and developed an avid interest in Biblical Archaeology, making eight trips to Israel.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Zelma's life include two daughters: Josephine Kenimer Nixon and husband Dr. W. Harold Nixon, of Spartanburg, S.C.; Dr. Elizabeth A. Kenimer, of Greensboro, Ga.; and one son, Dr. B. Keith Kenimer and wife Donna, of Montrose.
Zelma was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren: Sally Nixon, Amy Nixon Oakes, William Harold Nixon Jr., Courtney Kenimer Keene, Barry Keith Kenimer Jr., Hansen Kenimer Suermann, John Lafayette Draper; and seven great-grandchildren: Ashley Oakes, Elizabeth Oakes, Lauren Oakes, Jacob Keene, Joshua Keene, Grace Keene, and Chloe Suermann.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Winona Amos and Alvanelle Moon, of Cornelis, Ga.; and two brothers: Walter Holcomb, of Clarksville, Ga.; and Corbett Holcomb, of Waycross, Ga.
Zelma was preceded in death by both of her parents and one grandson, Karl Needham Kenimer.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Zelma's life were officiated by Revs. Jimmy A. Long, Bron Holcomb, and Dave Sandridge on Monday, March 12, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, Ga.
Interment followed the service in the Greensboro City Cemetery
at Greensboro, Ga.
The family suggests that memorial contributions, in memory of Zelma, be made to the First Baptist Church of Greensboro Building Fund.
