Richard G. 'Dick' DaLee
World War II Veteran
Nov. 23, 1921 - May 6, 2001
SUN CITY, Ariz. - Former Montrose resident, Dick DaLee, age 79, died after a short illness Sunday morning, May 6, 2001, in Sun City, Ariz.
Richard G. DaLee, the son of George and Reba (Herman) DaLee, was born on Nov. 23, 1921. He spent his childhood in Clifton, Colo., and graduated from high school in Grand Junction, Colo. He spent six years in the Army Air Force before and during World War II, finishing his service to his country in 1945. Dick continued his education at Mesa College in Grand Junction and graduated from the University of Denver in 1951.
He entered the real estate profession in Grand Junction with Jones Realty, later moving to California. On Dec. 11, 1960, Dick married Betty (Scales) Lofgren in Concord, Calif., and two children were born to their union. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Dick joined the Boise Cascade Land Development Company as sales manager of the Pine Mountain Lake and Lake Don Pedro projects. He returned to Montrose in the late 1970s and opened his own office. He later moved to Denver for a few years and then moved back to California in the mid-1980s, where he was active with Vintage Realty and Bright Development. After nearly 50 years in the real estate business, Dick retired and in 1997 moved to Sun City, Ariz., where he remained until the time of his death.
He was a member of Diablo Valley Masonic Lodge No. 448, the Scottish Rite and Aahmes Shrine and Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053, B.P.O.E.
Surviving family members include one son, Michael DaLee and wife Stephanie, of Peoria, Ariz.; one daughter, Deborah and husband Eric St. Pierre, of Eagle, Idaho; four grandchildren: Courtney and Cory DaLee and Garrett and Ashley St. Pierre; two great-grandchildren; one stepson, Robert Lofgren and wife Heidi and children: Jamie and Kristie, of Modesto, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Janet and husband Rick Lewis and children: Ryan and Kimberly, of Battleground, Wash.
Other family survivors include one brother, Don DaLee, of Montrose; and two sisters: Erma Jean Allen, of Hotchkiss; and Barbara Bradford, of Modesto, Calif.
Dick was preceded in death by both of his parents and one brother, Allan DaLee.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Lamborn Masonic Lodge No. 102, 178 E. Hotchkiss Ave., in Hotchkiss, Colo. Private inurnment will follow at a later time.

Rosenaldo 'Ross' Gallegos
Loved the Mountains, Outdoors

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Former longtime Montrose resident, Rosenaldo "Ross" Gallegos died after a seven-year illness with cancer on Sunday, May 27, 2001, peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his loving wife and family members by his side.
Rosenaldo Gallegos, the son of Antonio Lino and Juana Gallegos, was born in Ceballa, N.M., on Jan. 21, 1913, and lived a full life of 88 years. He spent many years working in sheep camps where he welcomed family, friends and strangers with his warm hospitality. He was known for his sheep herder camp food and "big bread."
He also worked at the Camp Bird Mine in Ouray, Colo., and the Tintic Mines in Eureka, Utah.
Ross was married for 64 years to the love of his life, A. Bernice Trujillo. He will always be remembered to many family members as "the man who came a courting on a big white stallion."
He was an avid horseman, hunter, fisherman, gardener and family man. Ross loved the mountains and the outdoors and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Surviving family members who were proud and blessed to share Ross' life include his wife, Bernice Gallegos, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and six children: Juanita and husband Joe Sandoval, of Mesquite, Nev.; Jim Gallegos and wife Sandie; Jackie and husband John Jewett; Janell and husband Rick Tafoya; Jennifer and husband Mike Panas, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; and MaRia Moxley and Doug Mann, of Montrose.
Ross was the proud grandfather of 27 grandchildren including Meydo Moxley of Montrose, 45 great-grandchildren which includes Raevyn Moxley of Montrose, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Henry McCurie, of Kennwick, Wash.; and six sisters: Delia and husband Toby Crespin, of Delta; Agnes and husband Jerry Nuner, of Santa Paula, Calif.; Rebecca Valdez and Clorinda Medina, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; Shirley Martinez, of Chama, N.M.; and Fritz and husband Nelson Fresquez, of Albuquerque, N.M.
Ross was preceded in death by both of his parents and one brother, who died 36 hours before Ross, Jeronimo "Mac" McWilliams, of Bloomfield, N.M.
The family would like to thank the doctors and IHC Hospice for the care they provided and the generous time spent helping the family prepare for this day. Special thanks also go to those family members who lovingly gave their time to care for Ross at home.
Viewing followed by a Rosary and family gathering will be held on Sunday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. (Rosary beginning at 7 p.m.) at the Memorial Estates Mortuary, 5850 S. 900 East, and on Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral Mass in loving remembrance and to honor Ross' life will be officiated on Monday, June 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 3650 S. 3600 West, in West Valley City, Utah.
Interment will follow the Mass in the Murray City Cemetery
at 7th E. 5600 South (Vine St.).

Alice Elizabeth DeVinny Hardy
Beloved Mother
July 12, 1903 - May 17, 2001
MONTROSE - Alice DeVinny Hardy, age 97, the last surviving child of pioneer Montrose County resident George Parr DeVinny, died from pneumonia Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
George P. DeVinny, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Cozad, Neb., on the plains of Western Nebraska, and after his marriage to Alice's mother, Alice Marie Sauvageau, the couple moved to Western Colorado in 1899.
The couple established a homestead at the foot of Mt. Sneffles, on Beaver Creek near Ridgway, Colo., where Alice DeVinny, one of seven children, was born on July 12, 1903. Her father began publishing the Norwood Post. The DeVinnys later sold their homestead and moved to Montrose to be closer to schools for their children while George worked for the Daily Press and later established a printing business.
Alice spent her childhood years in Montrose where she attended Morgan Elementary School and was a proud graduate of Montrose County High School in 1922. She was awarded a Regent's scholarship to the University of Colorado at Boulder. Shortly before the end of her first year of college, her mother fell ill and Alice selflessly returned home to Montrose to care for the family.
She then attended Ross Business School in Grand Junction, and went to work as a secretary. On March 13, 1930, Alice married F. Waldo Hardy in Sacramento, Calif., and went to live in Martinez, Calif., where Waldo held a position as mechanical engineer for Shell Oil Company.
In 1936, the Hardy family moved back to Montrose, where they both had lived most of their lives. After two of her children were in college, Alice took the position of secretary to the Montrose County High School Superintendent, where she maintained the budgets and payroll for all of the high schools.
Alice and Waldo lived on their farm near the Oak Grove School until after they both retired. Their home was the site of many large family gatherings that are remembered fondly by Alice's children and many nieces and nephews.
Waldo preceded Alice in death in August of 1988 at Montrose.
She was a member of the Hillcrest Congregational United Church of Christ of Montrose, the Women's Union, PEO, Sunshine Circle (charter member), Eastern Star, Montrose County Retired School Employees Assn., and years ago belonged to a dinner/bridge club that met monthly with three or four tables of friends and relatives.
Alice's special interests included gardening, cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and "neighboring." When she lived on the farm she raised a huge vegetable garden, tended an impossibly large and beautiful yard full of flowers, trees, and bushes. She made many of the clothes her children wore, and knitted and crocheted acres of afghans and sweaters. Alice had a lot of spunk and a marvelous sense of humor. When she and her sisters visited together, they somehow managed to all talk at once nonstop, but hear everything everyone else said. (At least that is the way her children remember it.)
Alice loved to work in her flower gardens. When she and Waldo moved to town, she planted the first rose bush herself, and then decided that Chris, a nephew, could plant the remaining 24 roses. She tended the roses as long as she could, and since then wonderful neighbors at Phillips Court have lovingly filled in for her. The roses can be seen if you go east past Montrose Golf Course on Sunnyside and look to your left.
Surviving family members who were proud to share Alice's life include two daughters: Lynn H. Wallace, of Montrose; Carol L. and husband Elbert Walker, of Las Cruces, N.M.; and one son, Darel W. Hardy and wife Linda, of Fort Collins.
Alice was the loving grandmother of seven precious grandchildren: Lynette Wallace Austin, Diana Walker Landry, David Walker, Daniel Walker, Elaine Walker, Janet Hardy Garlock, Brian Hardy; and seven great-grandchildren. Among surviving nieces and nephews several reside in Montrose - Carla Logan, David DeVinny, Felecia Frazier and Marilyn DuPre.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Waldo, Alice was also preceded in death by two brothers: George and Theron DeVinny; and four sisters: Ethel Feighner, Edith Meyers, Dorothy Moorehead, and Evelyn Summers.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Alice's life will be officiated on Thursday, May 31, at 10 a.m. at the Hillcrest Congregational Church in Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in Cedar Cemetery.

Ruby Maurer
Cimarron Rancher, Leader
March 7, 1904 - May 29, 2001
CIMARRON - Longtime Cimarron rancher, Ruby Maurer, age 97, died Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2001, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.
Known to everyone as "Ruby," she was born Ruby Katherine Bishop on March 7, 1904 in Spearville, Kan., and later moved with her family to the Wilson Peak area. After earning a teaching certificate at Western State College in Gunnison, Ruby taught for a short time.
She married Albert "Mike" Maurer on May 15, 1929, and they raised sheep, polled Herefords, and two sons on the ranch at Cimarron. Ruby took in boarders, including a highway crew, to help pay off the mortgage. In later years, hunters from as far away as North Carolina made an annual trek to hunt on the ranch and eat Ruby's pie and cinnamon rolls.
Ruby was instrumental in getting school bus service to the Cimarron community in 1946, making it possible for Cimarron children to have access to Montrose schools. She was also active in obtaining REA service for the area. Ruby was a longtime member of the Cimarron Community Club.
Surviving family members very grateful to share Ruby's life include her two sons: Charles "Lloyd" Maurer, of Grand Junction; Wayne Maurer, of Montrose; four precious grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Nellie Topliss, of Boulder.
Ruby was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband of 67 years, Mike Maurer, who died in April of 1996; one son; and two granddaughters.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, June 1, from noon until 2 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel, with Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Ruby's life to begin at 2 p.m. also at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Private interment will follow the service in Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.

Paul A. Sale
Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather
Sept. 17, 1919 - May 25, 2001
OLATHE - Paul A. Sale, age 81, a resident of Olathe since 1985, died Friday afternoon, May 25, 2001, at his home in Olathe.
Paul A. Sale was born in Stanberry, Mo., on Sept. 17, 1919, the son of Doyle N. Sale and Lucy Mae (Gish) Sale. He spent his childhood years in Redvale and attended the Norwood High School.
On April 26, 1941, Paul was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Dorthy M. Impson. Paul and Dorthy's lives were enriched when they became the parents of five children. They had the joy and privilege of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary last month.
Prior to his retirement, Paul was employed as a road maintenance foreman for San Miguel County for many years.
In 1985, Paul and Dorthy moved to Olathe where they made their home until the time of Paul's death.
Paul was instrumental in establishing the Olathe Senior Citizens Group and served as an Olathe Town Board Trustee.
His special interests that brought him happiness and enjoyment were woodworking and golfing. Paul will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Paul's life include his wife, Dorthy Sale, of Olathe; and five children: Tim Sale and wife Pam Case, of Golden; Paul E. Sale and wife Rachel, of Lake of The Ozarks, Mo.; Lucille G. Sutherland, of Denver; Bill D. Sale and wife Bobbi, of Olathe; and Lonnie R. Sale and wife Sharon, of Grand Junction.
Paul was the proud and loving grandfather of 20 precious grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Ruth McCormick, of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and five brothers.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Paul's life will be officiated by Pastors John Mocko and Gary Haddock on Thursday, May 31, at 7 p.m. in the Olathe Community Park. The service will conclude at the park.

Agnes Whatley
Former Delta/Montrose Resident
Dec. 2, 1934 - May 29, 2001
DENVER - Former Delta and longtime Montrose resident, Agnes Whatley, age 66, a resident of Denver since 1998, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in the Rose Medical Center at Denver.
Agnes Beals, the daughter of George W. Beals and Mary E. (Burnett) Beals, was born on Dec. 2, 1934, in Delta, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from Delta High School, and grew to adulthood.
Agnes lived in Montrose for many years and worked as a nurse's aide.
On Sept. 12, 1975, she was married in Montrose, Colo., to Keith Whatley, who preceded her in death.
In 1998, Agnes moved to Denver where she remained until the time of her death.
During her lifetime, she found happiness and enjoyment in sewing, knitting, crafts, and gardening. Agnes especially treasured her beloved cat "Cotton."
Surviving family members very grateful to share Agnes' life include one son, Jerry J. Wright Jr., of Denver; two daughters: Caroline E. and husband Henry Jackson; Linda F. and husband Russell Jackson, all of Montrose; seven precious grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Eleanor Valdez, of Delta.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Keith, Agnes was also preceded in death by two sisters: Leta and Phyllis.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.

Althea F. Seagler
Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother

MONTROSE - Althea F. Seagler, age 81, a resident of Montrose since 1949, died Sunday morning, May 20, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital at Montrose.
Althea F. Johnson was born in Childress, Texas, on Nov. 20, 1919, the daughter of George Johnson and Hattie Lee (Jones) Johnson. She spent her childhood years in Childress, Texas.
On Dec. 14, 1936, Althea was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Richard Alton Seagler in Olton, Texas. After their marriage, the Seaglers moved to Montrose in 1949 to raise their family, where they made their home until the time of Althea's death. They were the parents of two daughters and had the joy and privilege of celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary last year in December.
Along with being a homemaker, Althea was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was a member of the Church of Christ of Montrose.
The main focus and interest of Althea's life was her church, family, and friends.
Surviving family members very grateful to share Althea's life include her husband, Richard Alton Seagler, of Montrose; and two daughters: Kay and husband Don Phillips, also of Montrose; and Paula and husband Preston Dixon, of Grand Junction.
Althea was the proud and loving grandmother of her precious grandchildren: Jeff Phillips and wife Ruthanne, of Broomfield; Doug Phillips and wife Janey, of Montrose; Kim and Scott Warman, of Fort Collins; Darren Dixon and wife Marcie, of Medford, Ore.; Mark Dixon and wife Monica, of Montrose; Scott Dixon and wife Renee, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Althea's life were officiated by Pastor Tim Smith on Tuesday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Montrose.
Interment followed the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery, south of Montrose.

Nora Mae Collins
Beloved Mother and Grandmother
Oct. 17, 1939 - May 18, 2001
MONTROSE - Nora Mae Collins, age 61, a longtime Montrose resident, died Friday morning, May 18, 2001, at her home in Montrose.
Nora Mae Forsyth was born at Olathe, Colo., on Oct. 17, 1939, the daughter of Chester E. Forsyth and Tressie Thelma (Tunget) Forsyth. She spent her childhood years in Delta, where she was a proud graduate of Delta High School in 1958, and grew to adulthood.
On Aug. 4, 1965, Nora was joined in marriage to Calvin R. Collins. After their marriage, the Collins' made their home in various locations in Western Colorado including Edwards, Gunnison, and Ridgway, while Calvin followed the construction profession. Nora and Calvin's marriage later ended in divorce.
In 1973, Nora and her family moved to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death. In addition to being a homemaker, Nora was employed with Russell Stover Candies in Montrose for a number of years.
She attended the Montrose Church of Christ and in her young years was a member of the Order of Rainbow Girls.
Nora cherished many loves during her lifetime including being outdoors in her yard, raising a flower and vegetable garden, reading, and looking forward to visits with her family and especially her grandchildren. Her 8-year-old grandson from Cortez was a frequent visitor and Nora was eagerly awaiting his annual trip to spend the summer with her.
All those who knew and loved Nora knew just how fortunate they were to have this very special, unique, and irreplaceable woman touch their lives. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving family members very grateful to share Nora's life include two sons: Steve Collins, of Montrose; Chester Collins and wife Linda, of Columbus, Neb.; and three precious grandchildren: Jacob Collins, of Cortez; Joseph Collins and Rebecca Collins, both of Columbus, Neb.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Lorna Stonehocker, of Montrose; and Fay Bachen, of New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; an infant son; and her son, Calvin R. Collins, who died on Nov. 25, 1967.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, May 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Dr. Thomas Clyde Armstrong
Montrose Veterinarian
March 14, 1935 - May 15, 2001
MONTROSE - Longtime Montrose veterinarian, Dr. Tom Armstrong, age 66, died after a short illness Tuesday evening, May 15, 2001, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.
Thomas Clyde Armstrong was born in Salida, Colo., on March 14, 1935, the son of Thomas "George" Armstrong and Gladys Maxine (Morrison) Armstrong. He was raised in Salida until after his graduation in 1953. Tom lettered in football and basketball and spent his summers racing horses and working on his uncle's ranch in Buena Vista.
Following in his uncle Clyde Morrison's footsteps, Tom went to Fort Collins to attend Colorado State University, where he graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. While attending college, he married his high school sweetheart, Louise Casse, and four sons were born to their union. During his college years, he was active on CSU's gymnastics team and worked on the railroad during summers to pay his way through college.
Tom practiced as a veterinarian in Thayne, Wyo., then Llamo, Texas, where he was employed with the Texas Department of Agriculture. He joined his uncle Clyde Morrison and John MacKinnon as a partner in the Montrose Veterinary Clinic in May of 1963. They were later joined by Dr. David Tumlinson and the late Dr. Ed Krantz. Tom practiced 40 years and was still practicing at the time of his death.
In 1976, he married Lisa Gage and they had three children. The marriage later ended in divorce. On July 8, 1996, Tom married Judie Stoll, his veterinary assistant who continued to work as his surgical assistant until his death. Tom was especially gifted as a surgeon, often performing innovative and difficult procedures. One time after a long and difficult surgery, a comment was made, "I don't see how you do it." Tom answered, "I don't, God works through my hands."
He was baptized into the Christian Church and was a lifetime member of Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053.
During his life, Tom became a pilot, enjoyed bowling, waterskiing, country dancing, fishing, and working and living on his farm in Olathe. He loved all sports, and was an avid Denver Bronco fan. His idea of a good day was to barbecue and watch TV sports with his family and friends.
Tom was a master story teller and especially enjoyed having an appreciative audience with whom to share his library of stories and jokes. There was nothing Tom loved better than the sound of laughter. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched with his special love and compassion.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Tom's life include his loving wife, Judie; his seven children: Timothy George, Kenneth Clyde, Arthur Lee, and Steven Preston Armstrong; Christa Noel Hoover, Shannone Loretta Cryer, Thomas David Armstrong; 14 special grandchildren; and two stepsons: William and Jerimy Stoll.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Don and David Larson; a special cousin, Jimmy Close; one sister, Carol Downing; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Tom was preceded in death by both of his parents, one brother, and numerous uncles and aunts.
Public visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Tom's life will be officiated by Minister Ronnie Hanna on Monday, May 21, at 10 a.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery
at Olathe.
