OLATHE - Nancy Margaret Flaiz, age 91, a homemaker and longtime Olathe resident, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 14, 2001, at the Colorow Care Center in Olathe.
Nancy Margaret Harris was born in Oswego, Kan. on Aug. 24, 1909, the daughter of David Harry Harris and Clara (Welty) Harris. When she was 10 years old, Nancy moved with her family by train from Kansas to Olathe, Colo. She attended the Olathe, Menoken, and surrounding area schools .
On April 10, 1929, Nancy was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Rollie Leon Flaiz at Olathe, Colo. Their lives were blessed when they became the parents of four children. Nancy and Rollie had the joy of sharing 40 wonderful years together before Rollie's death on Feb. 7, 1970, in Olathe.
Nancy was a wonderful homemaker and the pride and joy of her life was her family, children, and grandchildren. She took great delight in taking them to the movies or on outings while raising them and in assisting her daughters with their paper route in Olathe and while living in LaJunta for two years. Nancy's family was so special to her. She enjoyed taking scenic drives, visiting with her friends, and making candy or baking.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Nancy's life include one son, Bill Flaiz and wife, Ruby, of Fortuna, Calif.; and three daughters: Thelma Pettis and late husband, Eldon Pettis; Alma and husband Ron Hintz, all of Olathe; and Patsy and husband George Lange, of Riverton, Utah.
Nancy was the proud and loving grandmother of seven grandchildren: Byron Pettis, Laura and husband Jerry Smith, LeaAnn and husband Robert Dickerson, Karen and husband Ernie Pires, Bonnie and husband Dick Brekke, Terry and husband Tom Dowdy, Jamie Hoeppner; 10 great-grandchildren: Cole and Jessie Smith, Ryan Pettis, Heather Dickerson, Angel and husband Jack Sharpe, James Brekke and wife Martha, Barry Pires and wife Tammy, Lori and husband Travis Rock, and Tawnya and Tom Dowdy Jr.; three great-great-grandchildren: Cortney Brekke; and twins: Bryson and Samantha Pires; as well as four stepgrandsons: Clifton Lange and wife Debbie, and children: Samantha, Christina, and Heather, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Alan Lange and wife Susan, and children: Christopher, Anthony, and Candice, of Branson, Mo.; Paul Lange and wife Conchitta, and children: Eric, Nellie and Andrea, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Randy Lange, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two stepgranddaughters: Cheryl Lange and Sherry Lange, both of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Other family survivors include one sister, Dorothy Lee, of Grand Junction.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Rollie, Nancy was also preceded in death by one sister, Beaulah Sawtell; and two brothers: Elmer and Ralph Harris.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Nancy's life will be officiated by Minister Allen Miller on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery

Charlene M. Mangum
Loved Life
May 25, 1919 - Feb. 19, 2001
ECKERT - Charlene M. Mangum, age 81, of Eckert, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Charlene M. Mergleman was born in Gunnison, Colo., on May 25, 1919, the daughter of Charles and Tott (Riley) Mergleman.
On Christmas night in 1948, Charlene met William H. "Bill" Mangum in Greeley. Charlene and Bill were joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, on July 29, 1949, in Denver, Colo. They had the joy of celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary last year in July.
She lived in Broomfield, Colo.; on a ranch at Allison, where she held a Deputy Sheriff's Commission; and in Bloomfield, N.M., before she and Bill moved to Eckert where they made their home until the time of Charlene's death.
Charlene was a wonderful homemaker for almost 52 years.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Cedaredge.
Among Charlene's special interests that brought her joy and happiness were canning, reading, gardening, and a general love of life.
Survivors who were blessed to share Charlene's life include her husband, Bill Mangum, of Eckert; one son, David Hamblin Mangum and wife Joyce, of Denver; one daughter, Tenya and husband David Watt, of Castro Valley, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Alyce Benott; and five precious grandchildren.
Charlene was preceded in death by both of her parents; one brother, Buster Brown; one sister, Alicia Sullivan; and one son, Richard Mangum.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Charlene's life will be officiated on Friday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Cedaredge.
Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery

Richard K. Miura
'Golden Heart for Volunteering'
Sept. 16, 1940 - Feb. 14, 2001
MONTROSE - Richard K. Miura, age 60, a giving man of many talents and a resident of Montrose for 18 years, died on Valentine's Day, Wednesday morning, Feb. 14, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Richard K. Miura was born just before World War II in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sept. 16, 1940, the son of Japanese-Hawaiian parents, Bert Klatsumi Miura and Rita Chizuko Kujiyama Miura. His father served in the military during World War II, while Richard, his mother, and brothers spent the duration of the war in a War Relocation Camp at Manzanar in California.
The family was reunited after the war and Richard graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, Calif., and attended Los Angeles City College and the L.A. Technical Automotive Trade School.
While living in California, Richard was an artist at Cartoon Animation, worked for one of the first colored printing shops, and taught gymnastics and Martial Arts before relocating from California to Montrose 18 years ago, where he made his home until the time of his death.
Richard married and became the father of two children. After moving to Colorado in the late 1970s and establishing their home in Colorado Springs and then Montrose, Richard was severely injured in an automobile accident, and his marriage ended in divorce.
He started his own lawn and garden business in Montrose and he worked long, hard hours, and really liked helping the elderly.
Richard's family and friends said he had a "Golden Heart for Volunteering." He was past president of the Montrose Lions Club and volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Montrose Memorial Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Montrose Ute Museum, Montrose Historical Society, and the Montrose Recreational District as a soccer coach for 10 years, coaching his own children and their team two years out of the 10. He was also a substitute art teacher for the Montrose School District along with his volunteer work.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Montrose.
Richard was a Gourmet cook and loved and enjoyed meeting and helping people in need. He has left behind wonderful memories of his positive attitude, his ability to give so freely to others, and his unselfishness.
Survivors who were blessed to share Richard's life include one son, Richard Miura, a junior at Western State College in Gunnison; a daughter, Nichol Miura, a senior at Mesa State College in Grand Junction; his mother, Rita, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two brothers.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Richard's life will be officiated by Rev. Tom Belt and Pastor Mike Lundberg on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Sunnyside in Montrose. The service will conclude at the church.

Matilda Elizabeth Ortiz
April 7, 1948 - Feb. 19, 2001
DELTA - Matilda Elizabeth Ortiz, age 52, of Delta, won her seven-year battle with cancer on Monday, Feb. 19, 2001. She went home to the Lord.
Matilda Elizabeth Sanchez was born in Gunnison, Colo., on April 7, 1948, the daughter of Pete and Judy (Ramirez) Sanchez.
She was employed as a secretary with the Colorado Migrant Council for 11 years.
Matilda was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta.
Among the many loves in Matilda's life that brought her joy and happiness were the mountains, reading, being with her family, and music. All those who knew and loved her will cherish their memories of her as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend, aunt, and a fighter.
Survivors who were blessed to share Matilda's life include her loving soul mate, Roger Trujillo; two daughters: Ronie Riveria and Mindy Espinoza, all of Delta; and three precious grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Mary Jane and husband Dennis Howell, of Delta; one brother, Joseph Sanchez and wife Delores, of Denver; five nieces; and two nephews.
Matilda was preceded in death by both of her parents and one brother.
Memorial Mass and Rosary in loving remembrance of Matilda's life were officiated on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta. The service concluded at the chapel.
Cremation had taken place and inurnment will be held in the Delta City Cemetery
at a later date.

William S. 'Bill' Yockey
WW II, Korean Veteran
April 26, 1922 - Feb. 18, 2001
MONTROSE - William S. "Bill" Yockey, age 78, a resident of Montrose since 1965, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 18, 2001, at his home in Montrose.
William S. Yockey, the son of Allen L. Yockey and Icimindea B. (Bomard) Yockey, was born on April 26, 1922, in Boulder, Colo., where he spent his childhood years, received his education, and grew to adulthood.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He married Dorothy Deale, who preceded him in death.
On Aug. 19, 1967, Bill was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Betty M. Blair at Montrose, Colo. Bill and Betty had the joy of sharing 33 wonderful years together last year in August.
Bill lived in Boulder and the Denver area before moving to Montrose in 1965 where he made his home until the time of his death.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a truck driver for a construction company in Norwood.
During his lifetime, Bill loved to collect pens.
Survivors who were blessed to share Bill's life include his wife, Betty Yockey, of Montrose; three stepsons: Gene Cox, of Montrose; Joe Cox, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Ed Cox, of Montrose; three daughters: Icimindea, Jackie, Esther, all of Springfield, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Grace Lopez, of San Diego, Calif.
Along with both of his parents and first wife, Bill was also preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. (service time) at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Mary 'Beth' Ahlstedt
Great Love: Family, Friends
May 15, 1923 - Feb. 17, 2001
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Mary Ahlstedt, age 77, of Las Vegas, Nev., died of congestive heart failure on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in the Good Samaritan Hospital at Portland, Ore. Mary, know as "Beth" to her family and friends, was staying with her daughter, Judy and husband Mike Crafton in St. Helens, Ore., at the time of her death.
Mary Elizabeth Duncan was born in Lazear, Colo., on May 15, 1923, the daughter of Steve Duncan and Mary (Burnett) Duncan.
In 1942, Beth was joined in marriage with Martin Arthur "Art" Bates. Their lives together were blessed when they became the parents of seven children. Three children died in infancy: a daughter, Shirley Anne; and two sons: Gene Arthur and Teddy Lee.
In 1958, the Bates family moved to Wisconsin where they resided until 1967 when they moved to Arizona. In 1975, the Bates moved from Arizona back to Delta. Art preceded Beth in death in 1977.
In 1983, Beth married Harold Ahlstedt, the widower of Art's sister, Leona. She moved to Harold's home in Mena, Ark. Harold died in 1992 and Beth moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in 1994 where she lived with her daughter, Sylvia and husband Fred Castle.
Beth's life centered around her family and friends who will miss her bright smile and warm touch. She especially enjoyed reading, playing cards, and watching sports on television.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Beth's life include one son, David Bates, of Mena, Ark.; three daughters: Judy Crafton, of St. Helens, Ore.; Sylvia Castle, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Cheryl Smith, of Ignacio; 10 precious grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Steve Duncan, of Cornell, Wis.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Along with both of her parents, two husbands, and three infant children; Beth was also preceded in death by two sisters: Stella Collins and Margaret Helm; and two brothers: Bill and George Duncan.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to celebrate Beth's life will be officiated on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Norwood Baptist Church in Norwood.
Cremation has taken place and inurnment will follow the service in the family plot in the Ouray Cemetery
at Ouray.
For Beth's family and friends in the Northwest, a second Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at St. Helen's Community Bible Church in Warren, Ore., where she attended.

Pearl McNeil Pickens
Contagious Laugh, Positive Attitude
March 14, 1906 - Feb. 13, 2001
GRAND JUNCTION - Longtime Bostwick Park resident, near Montrose, Pearl McNeil Pickens, age 94, of Grand Junction, died quietly Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Pearl Strand, the daughter of Emil and Sophia (Poirson) Strand, was born on March 14, 1906, in Idaho Springs, Colo., where she lived until moving with her family to Montrose in 1912.
They made their home on Bostwick Park until Pearl married former U.S. State Representative Hiram A. McNeil. Pearl and "Hi's" lives were blessed when they became the parents of three children. Pearl worked by his side on the farm and actively supported "Hi" while he was in the state legislature until his death in 1975.
In 1981, Pearl left Colorado to marry David Kennedy of York, Pa. She lived with him until his death in 1993 and then moved to Grand Junction where she made her home until the time of her death when she went to be with her Lord and Savior.
Pearl was active in the Montrose Emblem Club, the Jane Jeffersons, and various card groups. She also enjoyed all craft activities, especially knitting and crocheting. In the past few years, Pearl furnished knitted caps for churches and the Salvation Army, as well as baby caps for St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction.
All who knew and loved Pearl will always cherish the memory of her contagious laugh and her positive attitude.
Survivors who were honored to share Pearl's life include her husband of four years, Clarence Pickens, of Grand Junction; two daughters: Harriet Nowotny, of Cortez; Marguerite Collard, of Grand Junction; 10 precious grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Along with both of her parents and her two husbands, Pearl was also preceded in death by one son, Bill McNeil, who died in 1990.
Private Memorial Services in loving remembrance of Pearl's life will be held at a later date.

Jack R. Starner
Beloved Husband, Father
July 29, 1930 - Feb. 13, 2001
DELTA - Jack R. Starner, age 70, of Delta, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at his home in Delta.
Jack R. Starner was born in Monterey Park, Calif., on July 29, 1930, the son of John and Helen (Stauffer) Starner.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1956, attaining the rank of Corporal.
On Aug. 27, 1955, Jack was joined in married, for a lifetime partnership, with Thelma Beeson. Their lives together were blessed when they became the parents of two daughters. Jack and Thelma had the joy of celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary last year in August.
Jack graduated in 1957 from the University of Wyoming at Laramie, Wyo., in General Engineering (Petroleum Option). He started his career with Fred Goodstein's Trigood Oil Company in Casper, Wyo., as a drilling and completion engineer. He then joined his father in the Oil Well Fishing Tool business in Casper, Wyo. After the sale of their company, Jack worked for the Fluor Corporation through the United States, Carribean, and South America in construction management of refinery and petro chemical projects. He held a Professional Engineering license in both Wyoming and Texas.
In 1972, the Starner family returned to the United States and entered a new career in the ready mix concrete and aggregate production businesses in Western Colorado as owner and operator of Delta Sand and Grave in Delta, Colo. Jack sold his business in 1997 and retired spending his time raising registered Black Angus cattle and participating in various local and state activities.
Jack was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Delta. He was also a member of the Mine Land Reclamation Board of Colorado, the Colorado Ready Mix Concrete Association - serving as its president twice, once in 1982 and again in 1988; The National Ready Mix Concrete Association, Western Colorado and the American Angus Associations, Delta Elks Lodge No. 1235, and the Masonic Lodge in Casper, Wyo.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Jack's life include his wife, Thelma Starner; and two daughters: Vicki and husband Mike Ripp; and Shari and husband Richard Barker, all of Delta.
Jack was preceded in death by both of his parents.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Jack's life will be officiated on Monday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Delta in Delta. The service will conclude at the church.
Cremation preceded the service.

PAONIA - Rosie Katherine Bear, age 86, of Paonia, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Rosie Katherine Ellena, the daughter of Frank and Eugenia (Aime) Ellena, was born on Dec. 6, 1914, in Bowie, Colo.
Rosie was married on July 21, 1938, in Paonia, Colo., to Mike Bear, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Paonia.
Rosie enjoyed being a homemaker, crocheting, being a member of the Hotchkiss Elks Auxiliary, and especially helping others.
Survivors very grateful to share Rosie's life include one nephew, Harold Ellena and wife Mary, of Paonia; and four nieces: Mildred Branscum, of Okmulgee, Okla.; Sandy and husband Wes Messinger, of Tucson, Ariz.; Jean and husband Steve Shahan, of San Jose, Calif.; and Alice and husband Willie Blass, of Springville, Utah.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Mike, Rosie was also preceded in death by two brothers: Julie and Frank Ellena.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.
Rosary will be recited on Monday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia.
Mass of Christian Burial, in loving remembrance of Rosie's life, will be celebrated by The Rev. Mark Bettinger on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Mesa View Cemetery
at Delta.
