Maxine L. Norris

WARE, Mass. - Former Hotchkiss resident and businesswoman, Maxine L. Norris, age 86, a resident of Ware, Mass. since 1990, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in the Baystate Medical Center at Springfield, Mass.
Maxine L. Edwards, the daughter of Harry and Lena P. (Robertson) Edwards, was born on Dec. 24, 1914, in Hotchkiss, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1934, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at business college in Colorado Springs.
In September of 1939, Maxine was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Alvin L. Norris, in Hotchkiss, Colo. They owned the Gamble's Store in Hotchkiss, where Maxine, a homemaker, also worked.
The Norris family left Hotchkiss in the early 1950s and moved to Boulder where they lived for many years before relocating to Loveland in 1982. They remained in Loveland until 1990 when they established their home in Ware, Mass., where Alvin preceded Maxine in death two months ago on Nov. 5, 2000. Maxine continued to make her home in Ware, Mass., until the time of her own death.
Survivors very grateful to share Maxine's life include one son, Charles E. Norris and wife Joanie, of Monson, Mass.; one daughter, Phyllis and husband John Chabot, of Ware, Mass.; and four precious grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Evelyn and husband Dr. Woodrow Brown, of Hotchkiss; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Alvin, Maxine was also preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters including her twin sister, Lorraine Edwards, who died in 1977 at Hotchkiss.
Graveside Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Maxine's life will be officiated by Pastor Judi Taylor on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss.
Memorial contributions, in Maxine's memory, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Vicki Sue Hudson
'The Apple Lady'

RIDGWAY - Vicki Sue Hudson, a resident of Ridgway since 1990, died Friday evening, Jan. 5, 2001, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose at the age of 47.
Vicki Sue McBride was born in Seminole, Okla., on Feb. 26, 1953, the daughter of Hugh A. and LaJoyee Sue (Harber) McBride. She spent her childhood years, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Oklahoma.
She was joined in marriage with Louis Hudson on June 13, 1975, in Carson City, Nev. Vicki and Louis had the joy of sharing 25 years together before Vicki's death.
After leaving Oklahoma at the age of 22, she spent some time in El Paso, Texas, before moving to Ridgway in March of 1990, where she and Louis had since made their home.
Vicki, a homemaker, enjoyed being the Ouray County 4-H Cooking Coach, along with selling her apples, cider, and tomatoes to folks going through Ouray County. She also enjoyed making apple butter. Vicki loved her animals and her friends in the community.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Vicki's life include her husband, Louis Hudson, of the family home in Ridgway; her parents, Hugh and LaJoyee Sue McBride, of Enid, Okla.; one sister, Cynthia Bowden, of Hennessey, Okla.; one brother, James McBride, of Enid, Okla.; and three stepsons: Gary Hudson, of Smith River, Calif.; Steve Hudson, of Fort Worth, Texas; and Linzy Hudson, of Valley Springs, Calif.
Other family survivors include four sisters-in-law: Alice McClurg, of Modesto, Calif.; Ruth Crabtree, of Fresno, Calif.; Jean Sheldon, of Porterville, Calif.; Joyce and husband Bob Kurz, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Welch Hudson and wife Ann, of Fresno, Calif.; a special uncle, Jim Harber, of Tulsa, Okla.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Oklahoma.
Vicki was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance of Vicki's life will be officiated on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ouray. The service will conclude at the church.

Viva M. Benson

MONTROSE - Viva M. Benson, age 96, of Montrose, died Thursday morning, Jan. 11, 2001 at Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Viva M. Casey, the daughter of John and Etta (Jenkins) Casey, was born on Dec. 8, 1904 in Glen Elder, Kan. She spent her childhood in Kansas and graduated from high school there.
Viva married Richard Benson on Nov. 2, 1927 in Kansas. He preceded her in death in 1969.
The Bensons had moved to Boulder, Colo. in 1954 from Kansas.
Viva moved to Montrose in 1998.
Viva was a homemaker who dearly loved her family, children and grandchildren.
She was described as "Sharp as a tack until the day she died."
Survivors include: one granddaughter, Theresa Cartwright and husband Jack of Ponca City, Okla.; three grandsons, Butch Daniels and wife Debbie of Montrose; Dan Foreman of Boulder; and Mike Foreman of Ponca City, Okla.; eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Beth Benson from the front range of Colorado.
In addition to her husband, Richard, Viva was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Geraldine Ruff; one brother and one sister.
A memorial service in loving remembrance of Viva's life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at 3 p.m. at the Covenant Christian Fellowship Church (Jig Road behind the Crazy House) at Montrose.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.
Interment will follow at the Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.

Ann Virginia Cisne Fearn
An Independent Thinker

MONTROSE - Ann Virginia Cisne Fearn, age 87, of Montrose, died Saturday morning, Feb. 17, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Silverton, six days after her husband's death.
Ann Virginia Cisne was born on Aug. 15, 1913, at the family home in Bedford Township, Wayne County, near Cisne, Ill., the daughter of Allen Towns Cisne and Anna (Timmons) Cisne. She attended Harvard Elementary School, Cisne High School, graduated from Fairfield High School and then Lockyear's Business College in Evansville, Ind.
On Oct. 24, 1936, Virginia was joined in marriage with Dwight Paul Fearn at the Cisne family home. They farmed and raised livestock on a farm west of Geff until moving to Colorado in 1948.
Virginia and Dwight were partners in the farming and livestock industry throughout their married lives. Virginia worked in the Wayne County rationing office during World War II, was a bookkeeper during a period in the 1950s, and with the University of Colorado Admissions Office in Boulder in the 1960s and 1970s.
She was a member of the Geff Women's Club in Geff, Ill., and was active in church work in the First Christian Churches in Geff and Boulder, as well as in the Presbyterian Churches in Boulder.
An independent thinker, Virginia read widely on many topics and instilled a love of reading in her children. A longtime member and supporter of the Democratic Party, she relished political discussions and debates, especially with her grandson in recent years.
Gardening and landscaping were important interests in her life, particularly the growing of roses. Virginia enjoyed sewing and fabric arts and liked to travel and attend the theatre.
Survivors who were blessed to share Virginia's life include one daughter, Marianne; one son, Steve; and one grandson, Ben, all of Silverton; and one sister, Emily Allen, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; one brother, Hugh, of Geff, Ill.; and her husband, Dwight, who died Feb. 11, 2001.
Graveside Services and interment in loving remembrance of Virginia's life will be conducted in June, 2001, in the Hillside Cemetery
near Silverton.
Memorial contributions in Virginia's memory may be made to A Theatre Group or the San Juan County Historical Society, both of Silverton.

Dwight Paul Fearn
Farmer, Livestock Breeder

MONTROSE - Dwight Paul Fearn, age 85, of Montrose, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 11, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital, with his wife of 64 years, daughter, son, and grandson at his bedside. Dwight's wife died six days after his death.
Dwight Paul Fearn was born on Aug. 19, 1915, at the family home in Lamard Township, Wayne County, south of Cisne, Ill., the son of Schuyler Colfax Fearn and Luella (Smith) Fearn. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Geff, Ill.
Dwight married Virginia Cisne at the Cisne home on Oct. 24, 1936. They farmed and raised livestock on a farm west of Geff until moving to Colorado in 1948.
A lifelong livestock breeder, Dwight raised and showed Milking Shorthorn cattle in Illinois and Colorado. He served as president of the Colorado Milking Shorthorn Association and was the state sale manager for the breed for several years. In the 1970s he began breeding and raising Arabian horses and worked with Arabians until his death. He also held offices in several Arabian Horse breeding groups.
For a period of time in the 1950s and 1960s, Dwight was a dairy salesman for Watts Hardy Dairy in Boulder. He also worked with Phillips Construction as an on-call finish carpenter in Montrose.
During his life Dwight served in many community activities including the Geff Public School Board in Illinois, was a Deacon of the First Christian Churches in Geff, Ill. and Boulder. He also helped organize an electric distribution cooperative in 1936.
Dwight's special interests during his lifetime that brought him enjoyment and happiness included traveling, gardening, and books and films on the American West.
Survivors who were blessed to share Dwight's life include his wife, Virginia Fearn, of Montrose; one daughter, Marianne; one son, Steve; and one grandson, Ben, all of Silverton.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, one brother, Roy, of Cisne, Ill.; and an infant sister and brother.
Graveside Services and interment in loving remembrance of Dwight's life will be conducted in June 2001 in the Hillside Cemetery
near Silverton.
Memorial contributions, in Dwight's memory, may be made to A Theatre Group or the San Juan County Historical Society, both of Silverton.

Mary Tenney
Retired School Teacher
Nov. 12, 1951 - Feb. 25, 2001
PAONIA - Former Montrose resident and school teacher, Mary Tenney, age 49, a resident of Paonia for three years, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at her home in Paonia.
Mary Tenney, the daughter of Albert Tenney and Irene (Bakay) Tenney, was born on Nov. 12, 1951, in Denver, Colo. She spent her childhood years in Bailey, where she graduated from Bailey High School. She continued to pursue her education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, graduating with a degree in teaching.
Mary taught school in Montrose for many years before moving to Paonia three years ago where she remained until the time of her death.
The loves of Mary's life that brought her happiness included teaching, nature, and the outdoors.
Survivors left to cherish Mary's memory include two sisters: Beverly Lagarde, of Crofton, Md.; Carolyn Thompson, of Coeur D' Alene, Idaho; and her companion, Louie Novak, of Paonia.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
No services are planned at this time.

Charles H. Oliver
Retired Safeway Store Manager
June 20, 1910 - Feb. 24, 2001
DELTA - Charles H. Oliver, age 90, a retired Safeway manager and a resident of Delta since 1979, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at his home in Delta.
Charles H. Oliver was born in Grey Ridge, Mo., on June 20, 1910, the son of William and Mary (Lawson) Oliver. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Olathe.
On Sept. 2, 1928, Charles was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with LeVeta E. Jennings in Montrose, Colo. Their lives were blessed when they became the parents of five children. Charles and LeVeta had the joy and privilege of celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary last year in September.
After their marriage, Charles managed the Safeway Store in Delta prior to moving to Paonia to manage the store there in 1935. In 1937, the Olivers moved to Montrose where Charles managed the Montrose Safeway Store.
While living in Montrose, he served as president of the Lions Club, as Exalted Ruler of Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053, as well as serving on the school board and the Montrose City Council. He received the Good Citizen Award from the National Association of Food Chains and Safeway Stores also in Montrose.
In 1955, the Olivers transferred to Denver where Charles remained until his retirement in 1968 after being employed as a store manager with Safeway for 39 years in many towns in Colorado. While in Denver, he was a member of the steering committee and became a life member of the Aurora Elks Lodge No. 1922.
After his retirement, Charles ran a grocery and general merchandise store in Fairplay, Colo., from 1968 until 1979 when the Olivers moved to Delta, where they made their home until the time of his death.
Charles was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Delta.
He enjoyed playing softball and was a coach and manager of a Delta softball team in the early 1930s and as well as for teams in Montrose.
Survivors very grateful to share Charles' life include his wife, LeVeta Oliver, of Delta; four daughters: Regina M. Barr and Wilma Harris, both of Delta; Kennadine Duncan, of Cedaredge; Mary Jo and husband Bill Chaffee, of Eckert; and one son, Charles H. Oliver Jr. and wife Sharon, of Elizabeth, Colo.
Charles was the proud grandfather of 18 precious grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, one sister, two brothers, and one grandchild.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Charles' life will be officiated on Thursday, March 1, at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Delta in Delta.
Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery

Boyce Elwood Southall
WW II Vet, Restored Tractors

CORY - Cory resident Boyce Elwood Southall, age 82, a resident of Delta County for 52 years, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in the Community Hospital at Grand Junction.
Boyce Elwood Southall was born in Jonesboro, Ark., on Oct. 16, 1918, the son of William Talmadge Southall and Virtie Ray (Brown) Southall. He spent his childhood years in Jonesboro, Ark., until his eighth grade year and then moved with his family to Pea Green, Colo. Boyce graduated from Montrose County High School and in 1944 graduated from the State Teachers College in Tempe, Ariz.
During World War II, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.
Boyce married Betty Taylor on Oct. 27, 1947, in Raton, N.M. They were the parents of two daughters and had the joy of celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary last year in October.
In the mid 1960s, Boyce retired from Hellman Motors in Delta as the general manager. He then did tractor restoration at this home for 12 years.
He was a member of the Austin Baptist Church in Austin, Colo.
The love and delight of Boyce's life was restoring automobiles and tractors.
Survivors who were blessed to share Boyce's life include his wife, Betty Southall, of Cory; two daughters: Beth and husband Kirk Martelon, of Arvada; Barbara and husband Jim Maddock, of Freemont, Calif.; two precious grandsons: Kyle Martelon, of Arvada; Zachary Simon and wife Rika, of Okinawa, Japan; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents; and one sister, Dovie Knobb.
Graveside Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Boyce's life will be officiated by Rev. Bob Watts on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Cory Cemetery
at Cory, Colo.

Robert Earl Ruble
Korean Conflict Veteran

CEDAREDGE - Robert Earl Ruble, age 70, of Cedaredge, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in rural Montrose County.
Born on Sept. 22, 1930, in Hiawatha, Utah, Robert Earl Ruble was the son of William and Sara Ruble. He spent his childhood years and attended school in Hotchkiss, graduating from the Hotchkiss High School.
Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
On May 14, 1970, Robert was joined in marriage with Inez Beiler in Grand Junction. She shared his life for 30 years until the time of his death.
Prior to his retirement he was employed with the Delta Potato Growers Co-op.
Survivors who were blessed to share Robert's life include his wife, Inez Ruble, of Cedaredge; two daughters: Kimberly Bankster, of Olathe; Tracy Orton, of Anchorage, Alaska; two sons: Randy Ruble, of Missouri; Robbie Ruble, of Illinois; 17 grandchildren;
one stepdaughter, Susan Reger, of Cory; five stepsons: Ron Whiteshield, of South Dakota; Don White, of Oregon; Dale White, of Idaho; Dennis White, of Delta; and Gary White, of Grand Junction.
Other family survivors include one brother, Bill Ruble, of Homeland, Calif.; and one sister, Gwen, of Canada.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta. No additional services are planned.
