Phillip A. Cooper
Retired Truck Driver

DELTA - Phillip A. Cooper, age 75, a retired truck driver and a resident of Delta for seven years, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Willow Tree Care Center in Delta.
Phillip A. Cooper was born in Rifle, Colo., on July 28, 1925, the son of Paul Cooper and Mary (Maupin) Cooper.
After completing his high school education, Phillip proudly served his country by enlisting for four years in the United States Navy.
He married Margaret McDowell. Phillip was previously married to Bea Brown.
Prior to his retirement, Phillip was a truck driver for many years.
He lived in the Naturita area and then Arizona before moving to Delta seven years ago, where he made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Delta.
Phillip especially loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting in the Colorado mountains.
Survivors very grateful to share Phillip's life include his wife, Margaret Cooper, of the family home in Delta; one son, Freddie Cooper; one stepson, Sam White, both of California; one stepdaughter, Geri Hollingshead, of Montrose; and one sister, Pauline King, of Grants, N.M.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, several sisters, and one son, Randy Cooper.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance of Phillip's life will be officiated on Friday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Delta. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Randy Lee Weber
Montrose Farmer, Loved Life
Nov. 18, 1958 - Jan. 25, 2001
MONTROSE - Lifelong Montrose resident and farmer, Randy Lee Weber, age 42, died of complications from surgery Thursday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Randy Lee Weber, the son of Don A. and Beverly (Catlin) Weber, was born on Nov. 18, 1958, in Montrose, Colo., where he spent his childhood years, graduated from Montrose High School in 1977, grew to adulthood, and lived his entire lifetime.
Randy was a Montrose farmer.
He loved life, his family, farming, his friends, and Double Diamonds. He took a special interest in everyone he knew, no matter how small. Randy was always there and ready to help family or friends - he would find a way. He will be fondly remembered as "a very personable individual." Randy's family and friends know how very fortunate they were to have Randy touch their lives. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors very grateful to share Randy's life include his parents, Don and Beverly Weber, of Montrose; one brother, Mike Weber and wife Nancy, of Steamboat Springs; and one sister, Jana and husband David Millican, of Montrose.
Randy is also survived by five nieces: Jamie and Jennifer Weber (Mike's daughters); Dani Aragon, Dacia Pierson, Sherry Millican; and one nephew, Charles Millican (Jana's children).
Other family survivors include his grandfather, Verel Catlin and wife LaRue, of Montrose; and his grandmother, Bobbi Weber, of Garden City, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Blanch Catlin; and his grandfather, John Weber.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Randy's life will be officiated by Elder Greg Leverett on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Montrose Christian Church. The service will conclude at the church.
Cremation has taken place.

Harley Andrew Fay
Miner, Businessman
Sept. 6, 1931 - Jan. 24, 2001
CEDAREDGE - Harley Andrew Fay, age 69, of Cedaredge, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at his home in Cedaredge.
Born on Sept. 6, 1931, in Oriville, Wash., Harley Andrew Fay was the son of Harley and Anna (Trowbridge) Fay.
Harley married LaDona Pope on July 29, 1954, in Delta, Colo. Their lives were blessed with four children and they were privileged to share 46 years together last year in July.
Harley proudly served his country in the United States Army from April 6, 1954 to April 5, 1957, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
He was later employed as a miner for many years and was a store owner with his wife.
Harley was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Cedaredge.
During his lifetime he enjoyed a variety of special interests that brought him happiness including hunting, fishing, carpentry, remodeling and tinkering with cars.
Survivors very grateful to share Harley's life include his wife, LaDona Fay, of Cedaredge; one son, Earl Fay and wife Kay, of Grand Junction; and three daughters: Vickie and husband Richard Kolisch, of Creede; Tammy Fay, of Great Mill, Md.; and Shauna and husband Marty Duran, of Steamboat Springs.
Harley was the proud grandfather of 10 precious grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Wesley Fay and wife Lou, of Eckert; Harry Fay, of Arizona; and one sister, Penny Pratte, of Delta.
Both of Harley's parents preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place, with a Memorial Service to be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held in the Delta City Cemetery
at Delta.

Helen Iona Miller
Retired Registered Nurse
July 6, 1918 - Jan. 19, 2001
MONTROSE - Helen Iona Miller, age 82, a longtime Montrose resident and a retired registered nurse, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 19, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Johneen Thomas, in Montrose.
Helen Iona Jenson, one of 14 children, was born in Friend, Neb., on July 6, 1918, the daughter of William Fredrick Jenson and Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) Jenson. She moved with her family to Loveland, Colo., when she was a small child, where she spent the remainder of her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
After graduating from high school and college, Helen then graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Denver.
On May 14, 1942, Helen was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with John Wallace Miller in Loveland, Colo. After their marriage, the couple established their home in Denver where John was a barber and Helen headed a community clinic and was a Red Cross volunteer during World War II.
Helen then spent 18 years employed as a registered nurse at Presbyterian and Swedish Hospitals in Denver. In 1960, the Miller family moved to Routt County and Helen became the nursing supervisor at the Routt County Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1970.
In 1986, John and Helen moved to Montrose to be near their daughter and family. John preceded Helen in death on Aug. 10, 1987, at Montrose. Helen continued to make her home in Montrose until the time of her own death.
She was a member of the Tabernacle of Life United Pentecostal Church on N. Park in Montrose. She also belonged to the Steamboat Springs Lions Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a member of the Foreign Service Club of the American Red Cross.
Helen could be seen walking all over Montrose and even in her later years she used a three-wheeled walker to assist her on long walks each day throughout the community. Helen enjoyed talking with people and working for and in her church. She liked music, growing flowers, and was an avid reader of mystery stories. She also enjoyed reading her Bible. Her last big hobby and undertaking was her work in genealogy. Helen transferred her materials and interest to a grandniece who carries the tradition forward.
Survivors very grateful to share Helen's life include one son, Robert C. Miller and wife Donna, of Ovid, Colo.; and two daughters: Tamara A. and husband Robert Westwood, of Delta; and Johneen I. and husband James E. Thomas, of Montrose.
Helen was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include three brothers: Harold Jenson, of Ft. Collins; Bob Jenson, of Alamogordo, N.M.; Bill Jenson, of Bandera, Texas; and three sisters: Ruth Henderson, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Shirley Bliss, of Dallas, Texas; and Dorothy Cary, of Juneau, Alaska.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, John, Helen was also preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Helen's life were officiated by her son-in-law, Pastor James E. Thomas, on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.

Joseph Frank Walisky
Nucla Businessman
May 11, 1915 - Dec. 16, 2000
NUCLA - Former Nucla Mayor, councilman, and businessman, Joseph Frank Walisky, age 85, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 16, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
Joseph Frank Walisky, the son of Frank Anthony Walisky and Ruby Ruth (Blum) Walisky, was born on May 11, 1915, in Clifton, Colo. He spent his childhood in Telluride until his early teens and then moved to Salida, Colo., where he graduated from high school and grew to adulthood.
On Oct. 31, 1936, Frank was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Hazel Katherine Dixson, in Houston, Texas. Frank and Hazel had the joy of sharing 64 rich, wonderful years together this year in October.
In 1944, Frank and Hazel moved from Houston to Nucla where they owned and operated Walisky Department Store for many, many years. Frank served as a Nucla councilman for many years as well as Nucla's Mayor for a term.
He was a member of the Union Congregational Church for over 42 years, and attended the First Assembly of God Church in Nucla. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Moose Lodge and a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.
Frank had a passion for community service, loved his Arabian horse Ehnou, was an avid fisherman and hunter, and at the age of 80 he killed his last six-point bull elk.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Frank's life include his wife, Hazel K. Walisky, of the family home in Nucla; two sons: Tony Walisky and wife Anna, of Swink, Colo.; Eric Walisky, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and one daughter, Barbara and husband Earl Bushey, of Las Vegas, Nev.
Frank was the proud grandfather of 13 precious grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one nephew, Marvin Walisky, of Nucla; and one niece, Rita Freeman, of Clayton, Calif.
Frank was preceded in death by both of his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance of Frank's life will be officiated by Pastor Tom Ross on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Nucla. The service will conclude at the church.
Private family inurnment will follow the service.

Marshall E. Olson
Loved Carpentry

MONTROSE - Marshall E. Olson, age 81, a resident of Montrose since 1965, died late Monday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home in Montrose.
Marshall E. Olson was born in Detroit, Mich., on April 5, 1919, the son of Oscar and Margaret (Foss) Olson. He moved with his family to Monterey Park, Calif., when he was 2 years old. In 1936, Marshall graduated from the Alhambra High School in Alhambra, Calif.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
On May 17, 1952, he was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Hazel Lydolph at Las Vegas, Nev. Marshall and Hazel had the privilege of sharing 48 wonderful years before Marshall's death.
In 1965, the Olsons moved from Monterey Park, Calif., where Marshall was employed as a carpenter, to Montrose where they had since made their home.
While living in Montrose, Marshall was employed in maintenance for the Bureau of Land Management until his retirement.
The love of Marshall's life was carpentry.
Survivors left to cherish Marshall's memory include his wife, Hazel R. Olson, of Montrose; and two daughters: Margaret and husband Rick Grossaint; and Karen Olson, all of Henderson, Nev.
Other family survivors include two brothers: John Olson, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Oscar Olson and wife Gayle, of Toway, Calif.; and one sister, Evelyn Canon, of Huntington Beach, Calif.
Marshall was preceded in death by both of his parents; and two sisters: Pauline Stelma and Elizabeth Davis.
At Marshall's request, cremation has taken place and no service is planned.

Carmen B. Hume
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Friend

DELTA - Carmen B. Hume, of Delta, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe seven days after celebrating her 82nd birthday.
Carmen B. Pantano was born in Edwardsville, Ill., on Jan. 1, 1919, the daughter of Louis and Jessie (Smith) Pantano. She graduated from Arvada High School in Arvada, Colo.
On March 1, 1941, she was married in Golden, Colo., to Paul Hume, who preceded her in death in 1989.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Carmen's life include one son, Howard Hume; one grandson, Mathew Lawrence Hume; and longtime friend, George Randall, all of Delta.
In addition to her husband, Paul, Carmen was also preceded in death by both of her parents.
Cremation has taken place and so services are planned at this time.

Dorothy F. Staton
Dedicated, Loved Caring for Others
March 11, 1929 - Jan. 18, 2001
OLATHE - Dorothy F. Staton, age 71, a resident of Olathe since 1999, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 18, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital at Montrose.
Dorothy F. Hill was born in Neoshow, Mo., on March 11, 1929, the daughter of Jesse and Peggy M. (Meadows) Hill. When she was a young girl, Dorothy and her family relocated to the Denver area, then to Burlington.
Dorothy met her first husband, Verne Ellsworth, in Burlington. They were married on July 31, 1949, in Burlington, Colo. The Ellsworths moved from Burlington to Canon City and from Canon City they established their home in Las Vegas, Nev. Verne preceded Dorothy in death on Jan. 19, 1991, in Las Vegas.
Besides being a homemaker, Dorothy was a very dedicated and loving caretaker at St. Thomas Moore Care Center for a number of years while living in Canon City.
Dorothy moved from Las Vegas to Price, Utah, where she met Martin Staton. They were married on Jan. 7, 1993, in Price, Utah. In July 1999, the Statons moved to Olathe where they made their home until the time of Dorothy's death.
Dorothy was a very creative lady. She enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitch, and needlework. She made exquisite quilts and was a wonderful cook. Dorothy loved roses, butterflies, and seashells, along with the color pink.
Survivors very grateful to share Dorothy's life include her husband, Martin Staton, of Olathe; two daughters: Anna and husband Harold Valdez, of Price, Utah; Peggy and husband Don Szabo, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and eight precious grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; and two grandsons: James Heath Conover and J.D. Conover.
At Dorothy's request, creation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at a private family Memorial Service.

Joann LeValley
Retired School Teacher
Sept. 29, 1928 - Jan. 10, 2001
HOTCHKISS - Retired school teacher Joann LeValley, age 72, a longtime North Fork area resident, of Hotchkiss, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in the Desert Springs Hospital at Las Vegas, Nev.
Joann Deter, the daughter of Henry Deter and Helen (Compton) Deter, was born on Sept. 29, 1928, in Deer Trail, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from high school in 1946, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at Colorado Women's College in Denver and earned her Master's degree from Western State College in Gunnison.
Joann moved to the North Fork area in 1948 where she made her home until the time of her death.
Joann was married on Oct. 26, 1949, in Delta, Colo., to Charles B. LeValley. They were the parents of three sons and had shared 42 years together at the time of Charles' death on May 11, 1992, at Hotchkiss.
She taught school in Joint District 50 in the elementary and middle schools at Crawford and Hotchkiss until her retirement in 1988. Joann taught in the Crawford schools from 1948 to 1951 and resumed teaching in Hotchkiss in 1965.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church of Paonia and a charter member of Black Mesa Cowbelles.
Joann devoted her life to her ranch, flower gardening, reading, her grandchildren, and crossword puzzles.
Survivors very grateful to share Joann's life include three sons: Hank LeValley, of Hotchkiss; Stephen LeValley and wife Tracy, of Ft. Collins; Mark LeValley and wife Robbie, of Hotchkiss; and eight precious grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Brian Deter and wife Debbie, of Greeley; one sister, Andree Van Matre, of Deer Trail; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Charles, Joann was also preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Maggie LeValley.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Joann's life will be officiated by Pastor Judi Taylor and Art Wolverton on Monday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Hotchkiss United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Garden of Memories Cemetery
at Crawford.

Simon Pacillas Diaz

DELTA - Simon Pacillas Diaz, a retired farm worker and a resident of Delta County for 30 years, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at his home 15 days after celebrating his 76th birthday.
Simon Pacillas Diaz, the son of Isidro Diaz and Augustina (Pacillas) Diaz, was born on Jan. 5, 1925, in Zacatecas, Mexico, where he spent his childhood years.
Simon was married in Colorado to Josefina Abeyta who preceded him in death.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta.
The love of Simon's life was gardening.
Survivors very grateful to share Simon's life include one son, Ponciano Diaz, of California; and three daughters: Ignacia Diaz; Carmen Diaz, and Isabel Diaz, all of Mexico.
Simon was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three brothers: Jesus Diaz, Juan Diaz, Andres Diaz; and one sister, Francisca Diaz, all of Mexico.
Along with both of his parents and his wife, Josefina, Simon was also preceded in death by three brothers.
A Rosary Service will be recited on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.
