27-Yr.-Old Ridgway Woman
RIDGWAY - Melissa Gale Dickson, age 27, who had recently moved to Ridgway, died early Wednesday morning, March 28, 2001, from injuries she received in a car accident.
Melissa Gale Dickson, a twin, was born on July 23, 1973, in Bexar County, Texas, the daughter of Gary Dickson and Billie (Walter) Dickson. She spent her childhood years in Hutchinson, Hays, Atchison, and Wichita, Kan. Melissa attended school in Atchison, Kan., graduating from high school with the class of 1991. She received an ACT Scholarship to attend Cowley County Community College.
Melissa moved to Ridgway recently from Summit County and was employed as a waitress at the True Grit Restaurant at the time of her death.
Among the many loves in Melissa's life that brought her happiness and joy included going to Lake Powell with her family and friends, living in Colorado, the outdoors, snowboarding, and skateboarding. She especially loved her dog "Prince." Melissa was very active and she loved to run, winning many races over the years. She lettered in cross country for four years, and three years in track. One of her special interests was reading.
To lose Melissa at age 27 is to miss knowing a part of ourselves. Think of her as living in the hearts of all those she touched - for nothing loved is ever lost - and she was loved so much.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Melissa's life include her parents, Gary and Billie Dickson; two sisters: her twin sister, Melanie Dickson; Allison Dickson, all of Ridgway; her maternal grandmother, Hazel Walter; her paternal grandparents, Norman and LaVerne Dickson, all of Wichita, Kan.; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Melissa was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, John Walter.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, April 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose, with those attending to use the Nevada Ave. entrance to the funeral home.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and say farewell to Melissa will be officiated on Monday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Myrtle L. Cook
Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother
Nov. 1, 1905 - March 30, 2001
MONTROSE - Myrtle L. Cook, age 95, a homemaker and resident of Montrose since 1936, died early Friday morning, March 30, 2001, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
Myrtle L. Canfield was born in Woodard, Okla., on Nov. 1, 1905, the daughter of Lester Canfield and Amanda (Arnold) Canfield.
On April 17, 1927, Myrtle married the love of her life, Robert Cook, in Oklahoma. Their lives together were enriched when they became the parents of five children.
In 1936, the Cook family moved from Oklahoma to Montrose where they made their home until the time of Myrtle's death. Robert preceded Myrtle in death in February of 1993 at Montrose.
Not only was Myrtle a wonderful homemaker but she was also a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was a lifetime member of the O.D.T. of Shavano Valley in Montrose.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Myrtle's life include three sons: Les Cook and wife Marge; Richard Cook and wife Marilyn, all of Montrose; Edward Cook, of Grand Junction; and one daughter, Margie and husband Vic Ahlberg, of Delta.
Myrtle was the proud and loving grandmother of 17 precious grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Della Anthem, of Woodard, Okla.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Robert, Myrtle was also preceded in death by one son, Alfred Cook.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, April 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home in Montrose. Those attending visitation are to use the front entrance of the funeral home on Main Street.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Myrtle's life will be officiated by Pastor Jim Jesser on Monday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose.

Jessie Phylis Brito
Delta Conve - March 28, 2001
DELTA - Delta businesswoman, Jessie Phylis Brito, a lifelong Delta resident, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta, 22 days after celebrating her 81st birthday.
Jessie Phylis Ortiz was born in Tulsa, Okla., on March 6, 1920, the daughter of Joe Ortiz and Conchita (Herrera) Ortiz. She spent her childhood years in Delta, Colo., graduated from the Delta High School in 1935, and lived her entire lifetime in Delta until the time of her death.
In 1936, Jessie married the love of her life, Avenicio "Ben" Brito, in Delta. Jessie and Ben were the parents of four children. Ben preceded Jessie in death on Dec. 18, 1973.
Jessie owned a convenience store in Delta from 1945 until the mid-1980s.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta, a past member of St. Michael's Altar and Rosary Societies, and belonged to the Delta Cowbelles and the Montrose Grange.
In her younger years, Jessie loved to perform in Mexican dance. She loved and greatly enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and singing.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Jessie's life include one son, Silvestre Brito and wife Carol, of Laramie, Wyo.; and three daughters: Jessie Luna, of Delta; Betty and husband Roberto Cordova, of Greeley; and Gwen and husband Alejandro Sanchez, of Delta.
Jessie was the proud and loving grandmother of 10 precious grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Virginia Martinez, of Security Village, Colo.
In addition to her husband, Ben, Jessie was also preceded in death by both of her parents.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, March 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, with Rosary being recited by Alfredo Gallegos in the chapel following visitation.
Funeral Mass is loving remembrance and to honor Jessie's life will be officiated by Rev. Michael Anaya on Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Delta City Cemetery.

AUSTIN, Colo. - Shirley Dee Wardlow, age 58, a homemaker and a resident of Austin, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at her home in Austin.
Shirley Dee Carter, the daughter of Dee Carter and Thelma (Jobe) Carter, was born on Sept. 19, 1942, in Canon City, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
On April 1, 1962, Shirley married Darold Lee Wardlow in Canon City. They were the parents of two children and would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 1.
Darold and Shirley established their home in Canon City where they remained until 1987. They then moved to Delta County where they made their home until the time of Shirley's death.
She was a member of the Southern Baptist faith.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Shirley's life include her husband, Darold Lee Wardlow, of Austin; one son, David Wardlow and wife Jeri, of Colorado Springs; one daughter, Tammy Wardlow, of Austin; four precious grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents.

Fredrick G. 'Fred' von Seggern
Beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother
Dec. 2, 1916 - March 27, 2001
MONTROSE - Fredrick G. "Fred" von Seggern, age 84, a decorated World War II veteran and a resident of Montrose since 1980, died Tuesday evening, March 27, 2001, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital at Montrose.
Fredrick G. von Seggern, the son of John George and Helene (Meyer) von Seggern, was born on Dec. 2, 1916, in Wayne, Neb. He spent his childhood years on the family dairy farm in Wayne County, Neb., and received his education in Wayne, Neb., where he grew to adulthood. He continued to pursue his education at the Grand Island Business School in Grand Island, Neb.
During World War II, Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 636th Tank Destroyer Battalion, seeing action in Northern Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. Fred was a decorated World War II veteran and was discharged as a Sergeant.
On Feb. 15, 1948, he was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Irene H. Baker in Wakefield, Neb. Fred and Irene were the parents of two children.
Fred was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad, and the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.. After World War II, he worked at Larson's Department Store in Wayne, Neb., then became the manager of Baker Department Store in Chillicothe, Mo., in 1956. In 1960, PN Hirsch & Co. bought Baker's where Fred continued to work until 1964. He opened a new PN Hirsch & Co. Store in Lexington, Mo., in 1964 where he worked as manager until his retirement in 1980.
Following Fred's retirement, he and his wife, Irene, moved to Montrose where Irene preceded Fred in death on Oct. 29, 1998.
He was a lifelong Lutheran, serving on many church councils and committees and teaching Adult Bible Study. Fred was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Montrose. He was a volunteer for SCORE, CAP, the Montrose Visitor's Center, and Meals on Wheels.
The loves in Fred's life that brought him happiness during his lifetime included music, trains, and traveling.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Fred's life include one son, Paul von Seggern, of Montrose; one daughter, Jane von Seggern, of Atlanta, Ga.; and three precious grandchildren: Heather and husband Eric Backer, of Asheville, N.C.; Jim von Seggern, of Montrose; and Jason von Seggern, of Phoenix, Ariz.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Charlotte Wylie, of Wayne, Neb.; and Irma Martens, of Montrose.
Along with both of his parents and his wife, Irene, Fred was also preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Fred's life will be officiated by Rev. John Mocko on Sunday, April 1, at 3 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Montrose. The service will conclude at the church.

Charles Teissier Frey, M.D.
Longtime Surface Creek Valley Doctor
May 23, 1917 - March 27, 2001
CEDAREDGE - Charles Teissier Frey, M.D., age 83, a resident of Cedaredge since 1947, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert, the very nursing home he was instrumental in financing and building.
Charles Teissier Frey was born in New Orleans, La., on May 23, 1917, the son of Charles Victor Frey and Noemie (Teissier) Frey. He spent his childhood in New Orleans, attended Tulane University, and Louisiana State University Medical School, going on to become a medical doctor.
Dr. Frey married Louise Ireland, M.D., on June 10, 1939, in New Orleans, La. They raised four sons and the marriage ended in divorce in 1971.
He later began a family practice in Wichita, Kan., and entered the military during World War II as a United States Army physician from 1942 until 1946.
Dr. Frey spent one year in Hartford, Conn., before moving to Cedaredge where he spent his life working as a medical doctor.
He was a member of the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church and also attended the Cedaredge Assembly of God. His religious faith was reflected in his medical practice. In 1950, following a week at Camp Farthest Out, a speaker named Glenn Harding emphasized the forgiveness aspect of The Lord's Prayer. Thereafter, all existing medical bills were returned and no debits were recorded. Mary Adele Smith, Donna Weibel, Jo McCoy and Helen Barton worked as office assistants in various capacities and administered the plan. Dr. Howard Finke, during a couple years of partnership, also participated. Following the closure of the office in 1988, Helen Barton continued acting as personal secretary and bookkeeper with special responsibility and authority.
During the next few years attendance at the inter-denominational Camp Farthest Out programs and the predominantly Methodist Christian Ashram movement provided occasions for special spiritual renewal. In later years, attendance at the Episcopal Cursillo Camp was also constructive, until physical impediments prevented attendance at prolonged group activities. During these years three volunteer service periods of about one month each with the sons and one European touring trip also occurred.
In the late 1960s, Dr. Frey gathered a group of acquaintances and friends for the purpose of arranging financing for a nursing home which would be dedicated to maximum service and minimum profit. Horizons Nursing Home opened in 1972 and for the next 15 years paid no dividends and no fees to the board of directors, president, or the medical director. Personnel salaries including the administrator, were the lowest in the industry. Patient fees were correspondingly low. June Schwantes was administrator and director of nursing for many years. Horizons continues to provide quality care under the Volunteers of America.
He married Ada Lou Lewis in Cedaredge in December of 1979. Ada died in Cedaredge on June 16, 1980.
Dr. Frey was a member of the American Board of Family Practice, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and was awarded the National Rural Health Practitioner of the Year for 1987, among numerous other honors, awards and distinctions.
He served on the Cedaredge Town Council for eight years, and was a volunteer for Project HOPE, working on a Navajo reservation in Belize, British Honduras, and Taiwan.
The loves in Dr. Frey's life that brought him joy and happiness included keeping up with the medical field, his own practice, and overseas travel for volunteer service with his sons.
Dr. Frey will be lovingly remembered as a Godly, kind, gentle, intelligent, so giving, and deeply caring human being. Those who knew and loved him knew how very fortunate they were to have this man touch their lives. He was a doctor like no other. If you were too ill to come to him, he would come to you. He'd pray with you and doctor your body and soul. We will all cherish our memories of this truly loving man and the difference he made in our lives.
Surviving family members who were deeply blessed to share Dr. Frey's life include four sons: Larry Frey, of Boulder; Robert Frey, M.D. and wife Freda, of Harwood, Md.; William Frey and wife Myong Suk, of Aurora; and Stephen Frey, M.D. and wife Patricia, of Ruidoso, N.M.
Dr. Frey was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Lief, Erin, Aven, Elsa, and Nathan.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife, Ada Lewis Frey; and one sister, Evelyn Kuntz.
Visitation for Dr. Frey's family and friends is scheduled for Friday, March 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance to honor, celebrate, and say farewell to Dr. Frey will be officiated by Pastor Joan Uda on Saturday, March 31, at 10 a.m. at the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery.

MONTROSE - Jacqueline J. "Jackie" Parker, age 67, a homemaker and a resident of Montrose since August 1984, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 24, 2001, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Jacqueline J. Conn was born in Roosevelt, Okla., on Sept. 5, 1933, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Conn.
She was married on April 19, 1960, in Leadville, Colo., to Hubert M. Parker, who preceded her in death on March 30, 1998 in Montrose. They had shared 37 years together at the time of Hubert's death.
Jackie and Hubert lived in Leadville for 34 years before coming to Montrose in August of 1984, where they both made their home until the time of their deaths.
She was a former member of the Montrose Rosemont Baptist Church.
Jackie loved the Lord and enjoyed reading her Bible. She will be fondly remembered for being a kind and generous person. Her personal belongings, which she gave to Hospice and the San Juan Living Center, will be greatly appreciated. All of Jackie's family and friends who were fortunate to share her life will greatly miss her.
Survivors include one son, Richard Cromwell and wife Sharon, of El Reno, Okla.; and one stepson, Mark W. Parker, of Norwood.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hubert and one sister, Inez.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Leona N. 'Onie' Ferganchick
Beloved Mother, Grandmother
March 28, 1930 - Jan. 25, 2001
ECKERT - Leona N. "Onie" Ferganchick, age 70, a resident of Eckert for 54 years, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home in Eckert.
Leona N. Bounds, the daughter of Emmett "Willis" and Grace Marie (Denison) Bounds, was born on March 28, 1930, in McPhee, Colo. She spent her childhood years in Southwestern Colorado at Mancos/Dove Creek and received her education at Cortez.
At the age of 16, after moving around Southwestern Colorado and Utah, Onie moved to Eckert where she made her home for 54 years until the time of her death.
On Sept. 21, 1946, Onie was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Tony James Ferganchick in Aztec, N.M. Their lives together were blessed with three sons and they had the joy of sharing 54 years of marriage.
Onie was a homemaker, rancher, mother, and grandmother.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Delta.
The loves in Onie's life that brought her so much happiness were her children, grandchildren, being an amateur archeologist, fishing, hunting, and collecting arrowheads. Onie will be fondly remembered as being a "mother" to many.
Survivors very grateful to share Onie's life include her husband, Tony James Ferganchick; three sons: James Ferganchick and Elmer Ferganchick and wife Brandy, all of Eckert; and Fred Ferganchick and wife Terry, of Cedaredge.
She was the proud and loving grandmother of eight precious grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Roger Rohwer and wife Donna, of Washington; Ed Rohwer and wife Linda, of Colorado; and one sister, Euella and husband Leonard Lampton, of Cedaredge.
Onie was preceded in death by both of her parents; one brother, Eugene; and two sisters: Ardella and Nellie.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Onie's life will be officiated by Rev. Phil Neely on Monday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at the Cedaredge Assembly of God Church.
Interment will be held at the family ranch, Hecoma Ranch, at Eckert.

Ella Mary Gleason
Beloved Mother of Eight Children

CEDAREDGE - Former Naturita resident, Ella Mary Gleason, age 78, of Cedaredge, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Ella Mary Norlund was born on Sept. 24, 1922, in Nucla, Colo., the daughter of John and Katie (Crabtree) Norlund.
Ella worked as a restaurant cook and skidding logs. She confessed that the best years were when she was employed at Binders Texaco in Naturita.
Survivors very grateful to share Ella's life include one son, Paul Gleason and wife Pat, of Barton, Ala.; one stepson, Ray Gleason and wife Barbara, of Grand Junction; and six daughters: Dixie Coggins, of Humbolt, Neb.; Marjorie Jo and husband Ralph Bohl, of Walsh; Katerine Mardell and Robert Rogne, of Brillon, Wis.; Loretta Irene Gedeon, of Hiram, Ohio; Sheryl Rae and husband Dirk Hatter, of Cedaredge; and Debra Dee and husband Vincent Svec Jr., of Snook, Texas.
Ella was the proud grandmother of 26 precious grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: John Norlund and wife Gene, of Kune, Idaho; George Horlund; and one sister, Elva Palmer, both of Nucla.
Ella was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Jon and Helena Norlund; her maternal grandparents, William and Katie Crabtree; her parents, John and Katie Norlund; one son, Omar Eugene Gleason; and three sisters: Doris Binder, Ida Miller, and Katerine Gleason.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Ella's life will be officiated on Monday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Hale & Gerken Funeral Home Chapel in Naturita.
Inurnment will follow the service in the Nucla Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Nucla Moose Lodge.
